... this is the CD for you! Beautiful, beautiful material, with some of the most influential performances in the Gospel music canon selected. The liner notes alone are like a crash course in Gospel music history. You don't have to be a Christian to be moved by these songs of hope, struggle, and redemption. Though the second CD in this series (TGGW, Vol. II) edges out Vol. I as my favorite, Vol I has gotten me through some tough life-passages *and* enhanced my appreciation of a great American art form! The CD has been a mainstay in my stereo since I received it as a gift from a close friend of mine four years ago.... Whether you're a longtime Gospel fan or someone who has always wanted to explore the history of the musical form that gave birth to everything from Blues to Folk to Rock-n-Roll, you owe it to yourself to buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Essential listening for 'Roots Music' fans & spiritual..........2000-02-19

... pilgrims alike. As was true of TGGW Vol I (see my customer review for that CD), Vol II provides the listener with an excellent array of the most influential recordings in the history of the Gospel genre, with key parts of the canon represented & liner notes that read like a crash course in Gospel music history. But Vol II is also an even more musically expert & spiritually stirring outing than Vol I (although such a thing hardly seems possible given the quality of the first CD!). Vol II's performances are, quite simply, incredible, with Mahalia Jackson's "Salvation is Free" & Gladys Beamon Gregory's "Ain't that Good News," to name just two tracks, grabbing your soul so hard that they bring gooseflesh to your arms and tears to your eyes. These songs aren't flashy, & they don't need to be: they grip you because the performances are so expert -- & so heartfelt. I bought the CD a few years back, after a good friend introduced me to Vol I, & it has been a mainstay in my life ever since -- one that I've shared with my musician/singer pals *&* with friends whom I thought might benefit from the CD's messages of struggle, redemption, & hope. Whether you're a longtime Gospel fan or just someone who wants an introduction to the history of the genre that gave birth to Blues, Folk, Rock-n-Roll, and R&B, you owe it to yourself to buy this CD.

    i thought that the cd was really good. i especially like the songs by the winans. i actually bought the cd for my grand mother but i listen to it probably more than she does. if you like gospel music this is the cd to get.

    A fabulous kaleidoscope of African-American women in gospel. However, I would have liked to have heard some Helen Baylor tunes as well, like the classic "Can You Reach My Friend". Otherwise, a superb compilation!

    If you love the Lord, if you love ANY type of Christian music, you will love this. It touches you very deep and lifts you up. You just naturally want to worship the Lord while listening to it. There's not a bad cut or a ho-hum cut on it. It's all good!

          I love all the ladies up here because they are all letting God use them. It's just something about the Clark Sisters, these girls are bad. I recommand anyone out there that do not know God as there personal savior, you need a little boost listen to this CD trust me you will be bless.
