Southern gospel legends Bill and Gloria Gaither have added yet another epic disc to their already impressively large collection. This most recent offering is a presentation of beloved hymns with true Southern trappings. The Gaithers have captured the regal and majestic qualities with which these hymns of old have grown to be associated. In this live recording, each hymn features a different soloist who stands out in front of the choir with a charismatic and assured presence. From powerful moments of choir-filled praise to intimate moments of a single voice, the sincerity of the vocalists stands out as the most striking characteristic of this disc. Through their passion, the listener is brought into a personal connection with the hymn. These songs travel the full spectrum of instrumentation. "Bless His Holy Name" is clothed in a full string and brass section, while "Hold to God's Unchanging Hand" is stripped down to just guitar and harmonica. Hymns ware very wll presented and sung. I have a few of the Gaither CD's and would not part with them. I have quite a few of CD's christian and gospel music and have to say that the majority of the Gaither CD's are the best.

and this CD was no exception. There are some exceptional cuts, some beloved older hymns and, my personal favorite, Selah's Take My Hand Precious Lord, which has tight vocal harmony and a beat that will set your feet to tapping. If you like the Gaithers you will love this one.

I thought I'd write a review to correct the one star review previously given. Hymns is not as strong as its counterpart, Church in the Wildwood, but it certainly is worth having. The unique atmosphere of this recording (taking place at the chapel in "The Cove" - Billy Graham's retreat in North Carolina) is perfect for the type of project Bill Gaither has put together in Hymns. It is all old-timey gospel, the sort of bread and butter, feel-good, Sunday go to meetin' music that is the staple of popular gospel. Beyond that, Gaither combines a number of unique quartets with singers like George Younce, Larry Ford, Mike Allen, and Allison Durham Speer, all of whom deliver as usual. In short, if you're already a Gaither fan, it's a must have. If you are a casual fan looking for a recording to lift your spirits after a long day of work, this one is for you too. If nothing else, the recording is loaded with 19 tracks, and compared to most Southern Gospel CDs, that's a steal.

Of the two CD's I ordered, this one, by Bill and Gloria Gaither, has not arrived. The other CD, the Blind Boys of Alabama, arrived and is good shape and I am enjoying it.

This is an average recording all around, but it is worth it to hear Guy Penrod on "I will sing of My Redeemer."

You won't find a bigger fan of Gaither music than I am. I love the new songs of today, but there is something special about the old hymns. The highlight of this album is Glen Payne and Guy Penrod singing "The Haven of Rest". This is probably a 6 star album in my opinion!!!

This CD is a compliation of most of the hymns found on the Homecoming CD's and videos. There's a sweet spirit moving when Larry Ford and Guy Penrod sing "I Will Sing of My Redeemer", and the entire group singing "Majesty" and "Sitting at the Feet of Jesus". Well worth the investment!

    Bill Gaither, Vestal Goodman, Ben Speer..we all know these names and talents. We often forget ,though, who gave them their talents. God. This cd reminds us of that. It's amazing to know that He smiles down on each of us, especially these veterans of the Southern Gospel world as they raise their voices high toward Him. Bless His Holy Name, I Will Glory in the Cross, Holy Ground. We all know these songs. They go back a long way, but their meaning never changes. This cd is SO amazing; no one could ever give it only one star. I don't know how people can listen to hard rock, pop, and other music, when this one cd can satisfy their very need. It is THAT amazing. I reccommend this to everyone.
