Legacy Hymns & Faith (Bonus DVD) [Limited Edition]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With a career retrospective boxed set and a new CD reportedly full of new material scheduled for release later this year, Amy Grant certainly appears ready for new horizons. But first she pays tribute in fitting form to her earliest influences with Legacy... Hymns & Faith, whose limited-edition version contains a DVD with videos and interviews. There's a sprightly effervescence in tracks like "This Is My Father's World" and "My Jesus, I Love Thee," mostly due to the strong country-folk influence of new hubby Vince Gill. "Softly and Tenderly" is rendered nearly perfect by Grant as the age-old classic of redemption is laid down in a moody atmosphere. Transition seems like the motif of this release, as Grant deftly merges one classic into another, as with "It Is Well with My Soul / The River's Gonna Keep on Rolling" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus / That Old Rugged Cross / How Great Thou Art." All in all, Grant pays homage to the hymns that have carried many a church service for decades and the music that has carried her through some tough moments in life. --Michael Lyttle

Legacy hyms and faith.......2007-01-17
great old hyms sung like an angel. amy grant at her best.
Okay....but good old hymns can stand on there own........2006-02-21
I have been a fan of Amy's for quite some time now. i was very pleased to see that she made the leap back to here roots in this CD, however, i was disappointed when Amy decided to break songs up. "It is Well" would have been more beautiful on it's own. Amy also did this with some other selections which didn't seem to do justice to some of these very old hymns.
Amy in my opinion did it right on the second CD of old and favorite hymns letting each song stand on its own. It was far more pleasing to listen to the second CD.
Hymns with style.......2006-02-14
As Amy Grant fan, I pretty much love everything she does. However, this album did a good job of bringing new life to some old favorite hymns. While I enjoy listening to this at home, I find that I will often use it for background music at church (gathering, communion or after the service). It is a great album for pastors to have in their collections as well as Amy Grant fans.
Old Country Churches.......2006-01-22
This is a wonderful collection of old time Christian songs of faith from Amy Grant. Magnificently produced by husband Vince Gill, it is at once artistically beautiful yet simply presented so that the words of faith are not overpowered by the productions. Grant made this album to commemorate her roots in Christian music and has lovingly rendered all those songs she sang as a child in church with her grandmother in a manner that would make her proud. It is gentle and soulful and the selections are perfect.
1) "This is My Father's World"-This song has a ferris wheel kind of rhythm that ponders on the happiness of living in God's world in all its beauty.
2) "My Jesus, I Love Thee"-There is a Scottish Highland kind of feeling to this selection as Amy sings of love for Jesus.
3) "Softly and Tenderly"-Amy perfectly captures this haunting call for the weary to "come home" to God.
4) "I Need Thee Every Hour/Nothing But the Blood"-The heartfelt "I Need Thee Every Hour" blends effortlessly into the rollicking tent revival duet of Amy and Vince on "Nothing but the Blood" that will have you feeling as though you should be up on your feet and clapping your hands together.
5) "What You Already Own"-I am not sure if it was intentional or coincidence, but I could not help thinking of how Amy was abandoned by some in the Christian community for not being perfect. This gentle lament of sometimes being unfaithful and doing wrong and looking to God for strength shows his spirit remains with those with faith, which is played out by our lives.
6) "It is Well With My Soul/The River's Gonna Keep on Rolling"-This beautful blending of songs has a flow like a river itself as Amy sings of God's love being like a river that keeps forgiving and makes us realize it is not possesions that are our legacy, but ourselves.
7) "Do You Remember the Time"-This song is a longing for the innocence we all once had and an encouragement to hold on to how we once felt, when we were kids, and heaven seemed real.
8) "Fields of Plenty/Be Still My Soul"-A melancholy guitar solo turns into a haunting admonition to leave things in God's hands, culminating with a voice over by Amy that is heartrending.
9) "Imagine/Sing the Wondrous Love of Jesus"-Amy's imagining what it will be like to see and be in His Glory ends in the brief ode to her love of Jesus.
10) "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing"-This great church hymn with it's terrific background vocals and country flavor makes you feel like you driving by an old country church during a different era.
11) "Fairest Lord Jesus"-This is a guitar driven song of uplifting praise, and once again, makes you think of being in church.
12) "Holy, Holy, Holy"-This is a beautiful song of love for God that is like looking out over a glorious vista of His creation.
13) "What a Friend We Have in Jesus/Old Rugged Cross/How Great Thou Art"-Traditional church songs are beautifully melded together and offer a nostalgic longing for the faith of simpler times.
14) "Marching to Zion"-The ending of a church service and that Scottish Highland feel return as Amy ends this wonderful album with an uplifting church hymn, choir and all.
This is a truly wonderful collection of songs born of faith that has a special feeling of old churches in the country and gatherings in small towns to sing praises. It is a very special CD that crosses boundaries and can be enjoyed by anyone who loves music.
It is a reminder to those of us who are jaded and world weary, who have stood next to the darkness and in it, who have seen a little too much, that good still does exist, as does hope.

Legacy...Hymns & Faith and Rock of Ages...Hymns.......2006-07-19
I love how Ms. Grant has interpreted these songs and has made them her own. They are heartfelt, sincere, and personal. Her music is made for the average person, not the pious. She has had the courage to experiment with different styles and has not been afraid of the criticism that is always sure to follow. She has also included her personal experiences and shared them for us to relate. Her "Baby" songs were written for her (and all) children. I wish more mothers would care as much for their young. She has the capability of singing country, r&b, and pop - now that she is not managed by her controlling monger ex-husband. Her music is more mature. Her most meaningful music in the past, in my opinion, has been overlooked. Her success has made her a "free" artist to sing whatever she desires.
A Good Collection.......2006-04-10
Amy Grant has put together a group of hymns that are done in a modern way with a good sound.
Two of the songs that I think that she did very well are 'My Jesus, I Love Thee' and 'Softly and Tenderly'. One song that I don't think that she should have attempted here is 'I Can Only Imagine'. Perhaps it is just that MercyMe has done such a phenomenol job on that one, but Amy's version is not a great one.
Overall, I enjoy this album. For those who enjoy a modern sound, I would strongly recommend 'Redemption Songs' by Jars of Clay. It is really incredible.
important effort.......2005-10-19
Tis cd is important for Amy Grant in a couple of ways. First, it attempts to reconect with her base of fans, some of whom never quite understood the pop diva persona. More importantly it is an effort to connect with her roots, the songs that nurtured her faith and the faith of those close to her. Unlike many others who have done recasting of hymns (2nd Chapter of Acts comes to mind), for the biggest part this succeeds, in part by staying connected to the real core of the song.
The recasting of This Is My Father's World lets us in that for the biggest part we aren't talking radical restructuring of the hymns but an evolutionary process. Other highlights are Imagine, What You Already Own, It Is Well With My Soul, Fields of Plenty. There are no real clunkers
I higly recomend this cd
Did NOTHING for my spiritual side.......2005-07-19
Not only was this album way below expectation - I felt as though this now old lady was trying to recapture her former glory. it was just .... bad. Very diappointing. I was expecting the old Grant. No real voice behind the music, which by the way is not quite sure just what it wants to be...am I a pop song? a gospel song? a country western song? El Shaddei was my most awaited. It was also my most disappointed listen.
Don't waste your money buy it on the clearnace rack in a month or two.
The whole CD just struggles!

A tapestry of timeless hymns
Customer Reviews:
Godly!.......2006-03-24
In "Legacy of Hope", Deborah Klassen's quality of voice, her professional delivery, the instrumentation behind the lyrics, the recording mix . . . ALL bring many great hymns of the Church into the 21st century. Expect the same quality of delivery, instrumentation and recording on all of her CD's. Anointed by God is a good description of her music.
This is my favorite disk ever!.......2005-03-13
I have been an audiophile since 1967, and have nearly a thousand vinyl records in storage and hundreds of CD's currently loaded on my IPOD. This is my favorite CD of all time, and, I believe, Deborah Klassen is my favorite artist of all time.
I am a Bible teacher, and doctrine is very important to me. Deborah sings Scripture, and the lyrics resonate in my soul. Additionally, I am a techoloogy freak, and I find the quality of this recording impeccable. Not only is her voice extremely well disciplined, and not only does she have an incredible range, but the recording itself is technically excellent.
I heard Deborah last year at a Bible conference in Chattanooga, and was humbled by her witness and faith in Jesus Christ. I have since spoken with her husband, and understand a little better the furnace in which she has been refined. I commend her to you as an annointed messenger of God's grace.
Much, much better than I expected.......2004-10-23
Klassen has an amazing set of pipes, but I didn't expect to like this CD very much because I'm not much a fan of all those old hymns and their pompous 'thees' and 'thous'. But as the title of this review indicates, I was taken by surprise. This is an amazingly *restful* recording, in part because Klassen is teamed up with rich, superb production (by Canadian Bruce Stacey, himself a Christian recording artist dating back to the late 1980s) and arrangements by Howard Baer, Pat Caya and Tim Schwindt. They've surrounded Klassen with classical guitar, flute, organ, choirs and very little pounding percussion. The result is so gentle, peaceful, worshipful and downright elegant that I really like to play it while working on computer.
Here's the songlist:
The Lord Is My Shepherd
Unto The Hills
Praise My Soul The King Of Heaven
Doxology
Immortal, Invisible
I know That My Redeemer Lives
My Hope Is In The Lord
Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness
When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
Take My Life & Let It Be
Be Still My Soul
My Saviour First Of All
Jesus, The Very Thought Of Thee
Here's what Klassen says in her liner notes:
"During the recent past, a concern has been growing within me regarding the move away from the hymns of the church, both past and present. This, I believe, would be a mistake. To lay aside the hymnbook, the reading of music and text is, in my opinion, to weaken the fibre of our heritage -- the rich foundation that has been given to us. I want my children to know the words to the great hymns of the past. I want them to share in the legacy that we have been given."
Before hearing Legacy of Hope, I might not have agreed with her. But now I do. And since Amazon says this CD is unavailable, you might try ordering it through her website, www.deborahklassen.com

A Collection of Familiar Inspirational Favorites!!! .......2006-07-28
"Faith" is a collection of familiar inspirational favorites that will captivate, refresh, and lift your spirits. Mary Beth's impassioned piano performance has become a signature sound throughout the country and she is accompanied on this CD by world class orchestration, blended together to truly inspire. A legacy of faith lives on in worship through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs and Mary Beth brings the beauty of the message and music to life in this CD.
The collection consists of several of the most requested and most beautiful inspirational songs by Mary Beth from her previous CD's. These are combined with many brand new arrangements of songs of faith. And topping off the collection is a beautiful original composition by Mary Beth.
One of the things I enjoy most whenever Mary Beth releases a new CD collection is to listen to her original compositions. And "Faith" offers another new beautiful composition by Mary Beth. The introduction is the melody of the familiar hymn "The Lord's My Shepherd". This leads into "I Live to Follow You" composed by Mary Beth. The words and inspiration are Mary Beth's personal response to the 23rd Psalm. While the CD includes only the beautiful music of the composition, the liner notes include the lyrics. The lyrics are a beautiful testament to the faith we have in our Savior and as Mary Beth states in the liners notes:
"With a new song in my heart, I give thanks to my Lord and Savior, the author and perfecter of our faith."
It's always most difficult to single out favorites from all of the beautiful songs on a CD by Mary Beth but my favorites of the new arrangements on "Faith" are "My Jesus I Love Thee" / "Amazing Grace" and "For the Beauty of the Earth" / "To a Wild Rose". The combinations of the pieces and the interpretation which Mary Beth brings to the numbers are unique and very beautiful.
Among my favorites of the numbers from previous CD's by Mary Beth are "In the Garden" / "I Need Thee Every Hour", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "How Great Thou Art", and "Beautiful Savior". While each of these pieces has been recorded many times by others, Mary Beth brings a fresh and welcome approach to the music through her own arrangements and interpretation.
"Faith" is another beautiful and inspirational collection of music by Mary Beth. We all need to continually renew our faith and this collection will help do that through the inspiration it gives.
