Nothing but the Truth

So how do you follow up a release that features the song of the year? Very soulfully, if you're Bob Carlisle, the man who made "Butterfly Kisses" the 1997 Christian song of the year. Much in the vein of Michael Bolton, Carlisle's strength lies in his brand of gritty blue-eyed soul. And it's never moved stronger than in his new release, Nothing but the Truth. In powerhouse R&B numbers such as "Lay Your Hands on Me" and "Forgiveness," Carlisle pays homage to the music of his youth and a strong exposure to Motown. There's a wonderful duet with Carlisle and Bryan Duncan, himself no vocal slouch, on the cover of "Love Is the Answer." While Carlisle's reworking of Amy Grant's "Baby Baby" seems flat, he ends the release on a rich note with the moving, deeply reflective ballad "After All" (cowritten with Randy Stonehill). --Michael Lyttle

Bob Carlisle's last project was bitten by "how-do-I-follow-'Butterfly Kisses'" expectations and, with the exceptions of "We Fall Down" and "Father's Love," didn't stand up to the challenge. His latest betters his last several efforts, thanks in part to producer Regie Hamm, who rejuvenated Clay Crosse'sA Different Man, as well.

Hamm surrounds Carlisle's familiar gravelly voice with big drums and soul-both old school (on the Al Green-style "I Still Believe") and modern ("Watched by an Angel"),... read more

5 out of 5 stars If you don't like this cd, you're an idiot!!!.......2006-06-06

First of all, this cd was released in 1997. Therefore, don't be looking for the days of "Suburban Rebels" or the newer "No Mercy" stuff...This album was produced by Lars Frederiksen and Lars definitely put his stamp on it...Imagine lyrics from the "Surburan Rebels" era, with the sound of "Keep the Faith" and throw in some heavy power chords and double-stops you'd find on a Rancid album. Other than that, buy it. Its fun to listen to and every Oi fan should have it.

1 out of 5 stars Go home and break up!.......2002-04-07

This record is not good. Don't even think about buying it. Not only are the lyrics completely silly, but these guys are just trying to cash in the "American" Hardcore scene. I also met these guys on tour on various occasions, and hung out with them in pubs. They are not honorable or respectful on any measure of the Oi! scene. Bands like this make people hang up their boots, and call it a day.

    4 out of 5 stars not a '5'star.......2001-08-12

if all these songs were live this would be a '5'star release. the truth is that the intensity isn't here.

5 out of 5 stars Bring the Hammer Down, Mr. Fitz!.......2001-03-21

No anthology of great punk bands is complete without the ones who bring the hammer down the hardest- the Business. Hailing from the badlands of South East London (SE 12), the kings of English Oi return once again with "The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth", the biggest, baddest and fattest new oi release out there. Once you see this band live, the experience shall never to be forgotten...

Mr. Fitz, real-life entertainer extraordinaire, saunters about the stage like a panther in a cage. And when it comes time for him to sing, he brings the hammer down with the force of Zeus, shattering the air with thundering manifestos. Backed by the heavy-handed Bones (from Discharge and Broken Bones)on the guitar, punk is given back to the hands of its first and rightful Captains, the OG power players from SE London. Accept nothing less! Accept no substitutes! I RatMouse am here to tell you that the Business don't mince meat with punk rock. When I want to put holes in my cheese, I just hold the block of it up to the speaker and let these songs eat away at it! I sit below in the sewers and listen when they play in Birmingham (where I live- I used to live in the sewers of Paris, but got kicked out by Victor Hugo's cronies). Bring down the hammer Mr. Fitz, for as you do so, you are builing the edifice of Oi!

4 out of 5 stars In your face!.......2000-01-14

20 some years after the first wave of Oi! and the Buisness still puts out one classic after another. "Spirit of the Streets" and "Blood Ties" are powerehouse songs in the tradition of the bands earlier releases. Too bad Sham 69 couldn't have stuck to the good stuff like these guys did!

The dramatic authority of Son Seals's guitar runs and gloriously gruff singing voice are well-displayed on his seventh recording for Alligator, issued in 1994. But this time around, the gritty musical excitement generated so naturally by the former drummer is undermined by the crisp soul-blues inflections of his accompanists, including two horn players from his band then, and by '90s production touches. After honing his fluent style in two decades as a leading exponent of Chicago blues, the transition to a contemporary blues sound isn't all that smooth. The heart-wrenching tone of his guitar and the plaintive edge to his voice make "I'm Gonna Take It All Back" stand as one of his deepest, ah, most truthful originals ever, canceling any need for Tony Z's thick organ chords and John Randolph's rhythm guitar filigrees. Still, a flawed Son Seals album is better than the best from most modern blues artists. --Frank-John Hadley

3 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "SON, I HAVE TO TELL THE TRUTH! THE STARS DON'T LIE!".......2007-01-27

Son Seals, is what Shaq, "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer", would affectionately, dub, "A Good Road House or Juke Joint" blues player. No disgrace in that. He's just not a star. This CD fits that moniker. There are some good, cooking, songs, that make you tap your feet, and sway in your chair. Some don't. The best and longest cut on this CD, happens to be dedicated by Son to HIS IDOL, & SHAQ'S ORIGINAL ALL-TIME FAVORITE ELECTRIC BLUES GUITARIST: MR. ALBERT KING!! Son, even refers to Albert as his mentor.

4 out of 5 stars Very good disc but not Son's best.......2006-07-22

I have this disc, and I've been listening to it for many years now. As always, Son plays fiery, energetic, burning, emotional blues. His styles here range from fast giddy numbers to hard-driving woman blues to slower, more subtle tracks, like his tribute to his parents "I can't hear nothing but the blues."

Most tracks on this record are strong and engaging, and I am big fan of Son's school of blues. But this isn't Son's best recording effort. A couple tracks sound a bit mundane and unoriginal. If you want a stellar Son Seals disc, get his last disc "Lettin' Go" or his raw live disc "Live and Burning".

Son's fans like myself will still want to get this disc and give it a good listen, but there are better places to start with Son's music.

4 out of 5 stars Hideous cover art, very good album.......2006-02-27

One of the ugliest covers on any blues record for sure, but "Nothing But The Truth" is one of Frank "Son" Seals' best records.
He sings with tremendous power and conviction on up-tempo songs like "Adding Up", "Little Sally Walker" and the swaggering, throat-shredding R&B-number "Life Is Hard", and croons soulfully on the slowies "Good Woman Bad" and "I Can't Hear Nothing But The Blues". I can't help but wish that the Toys r' Us-like organ on "Good Woman Bad" in particular had been thrown out the window and replaced by a meaty horn riff like the one on "Adding Up", but hey - you can't have it all.

Son Seals plays gritty, muscular lead guitar on almost every song, and he pays tribute to influences Albert King and Hound Dog Taylor on "I Can't Hear Nothing But The Blues" and "Sadie" respectively, and tosses off the boogiest self-penned song of his career with the rollicking "Frank and Johnny".
If you like Son Seals, this one is a must-have. It ranks among his three best records (along with "Midnight Son" and his debut album, "The Son Seals Blues Band").

4 out of 5 stars Son Seals best.......2001-03-13

This is my personal favourite Sons Seals album. He displays the raw feel he is known for as well as some subtlety that you may not expect from him. The best track is 'Can't hear nothing but the blues' a tribute to his parents which shows that subtlety I mentioned. Check out 'I'm gonna take it all back' for the raw excitement Son can generate, augmented by the drumming of David Russell. Finish off with the 'Tricks of the trade' and you have memorable album rather that a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Blues, great CD!.......2000-05-01

Let's see, blues is my favorite music and son seals is my favorite blues artist? It always bothers me a little seeing some of the professional reviews of son's work. They always emphasize the energy and power of his music but never seem to appreciate the subtlety and artistry of his music. Son's music has a nice melodic feel to it. Nothing cliche about it and it nevers gets old or stale. Listen to "good woman bad" or "Can't hear nothing but the blues". In the later cut son sings "what a beautiful memory of them" refering to his parents. The former song includes some great supportive horn work and a nice sax solo. I also think this man has a under appreciated voice. It's not just the "blood curdling intensity" that is stated on back of this CD. Son's voice evokes emotion and complexity. The best cut on the CD is #4, "I'm gonna take it all back". That's one of the best songs you will ever hear! The guitar notes seem to fly off in to space only to be reeled back in only to be let loose again. What i love about son's solos is that he never loses touch with the song melody. Everything fits. I love "life is hard" and "tough as nails". Both are spirited songs with a similar theme. "The wind might try and knock me down but i'm as tough as nails". #7 "your friends is one of my least favorite songs on the cd(i still love it) but i do love the guitar at the beginning and the solo.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that some reviewers considered this to not be son's best work. That means there are plenty more great CDs from him out there. I own each of the live CDs from him, "live and burning" and "spontaneous conbustion". Only the late luther allison plays with as much power and intensity. I love those CDs to death but i seem to listen to this even more.

This is great music! The muscianship is solid all the way through.(Particularly david russell's drums) They call it the blues but it sure makes me happy.

Although I must admit I didn't like every single song on this album, I had to give it 5 stars because the second song, which I believe is "Lay your hands on me" made me laugh out loud. The words, "I don't need no psychoanalsyt to get to You," were really funny to me because I'm a psychologist-but as always, Carlisle is right- we certainly don't need a specialist to get to God, just Jesus. Shalom! dm.

4 out of 5 stars Bob Carlisle On Steroids.......2000-10-03

I've been a Bob Carlisle fan since I heard the first few bars of "Long Way From Paradise" back in his Allies days. He is certainly one of the most versatile vocalists in popular music (Christian OR mainstream) as he always powerfully delivers in any music style from Motown Soul/Nashville Rock numbers to tender ballads. This album, riding the wave of "Butterfly Kisses'" popularity, takes it up a notch. The arranging, engineering, and mixing is the best I've heard on any Carlisle-related album. The title track, "Nothing But The Truth," a driving and fun mixture of Latino and Blues rock, rocketed to the top of my "Wail-Along-In-The-Car" list (it's worth the price of admission all by itself), and guest vocalist Bryan Duncan's lovely tenor is always welcome. The album's remaining tracks are juiced up, but still classic Bob.

The ONLY reason I didn't rate this project 5-stars is because of the retooling of Amy Grant's lolly-pop song, "Baby-baby." (I was actually embarrassed listening to it the first time with my friends who kept saying, "You've got to be kidding". After a number of listens, I was able to catch a bit of his funky vision.) Thankfully, the rest of the album's strengths more than compensate for its one misstep.

    Album Description

When Procol Harum's Gary Brooker wanted to organize a concert to help raise money for the beautiful 13th Century church of St. Mary & All Saints in rural Surrey, England, he not only chose some of his finest musician friends to help out with the cause, but he also went on to record the event and release it on a fan club cd in a very limited run of 1000 units. This rare release Within Our House went on to become a highly collectable recording when the obvious happened as it sold out in a matter of days. However, with Gary Brooker's blessings, Friday Music is now releasing this fine live recording for the first time in North America, to go along with the extensive Procol Harum Remasters series.

Procol Harum classics like "A Salty Dog" and "Holding On" get the five star treatment from this eclectic group of musicians. Brooker's vocals and piano work are stellar throughout the recording and his emotional readings of the gospel and religious material is second to none, as his interpretation of the classic Elvis Presley hit "Peace in the Valley" really conveys the true meaning of this charitable event.

Other Procol Harum favorites like "The Long Goodbye" and the classic "Nothing but the Truth" are truly inspiring in the church environment, as the album closes with a heart rendering version of their number one classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale."

The applause you will hear from this lucky audience will attest that this was a successful night for everyone involved with this wonderful event. This newly remastered Friday Music disc bring this fine concert to light for the first time in North America. Procol Harum fans rejoice!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Odd But Compelling.......2005-04-25

This benefit concert, recorded September 28, 1996 in a big old stone church, features an odd combination of spirituals, madrigals, old Procol tunes and one Elvis impersonation. Backing Gary Brooker are a gospel choir, string quartet, and the Gary Brooker Ensemble, four musicians who are NOT introduced as the New Procol Harum.

Procol fans will surely enjoy the Procol tunes, but the unabashed religious nature of many of the other tunes may throw them off. The acoustics are grand and Gary sounds great, but one wonders exactly which market this release is aimed for. Hopefully the concert raised all the funds needed, because the program here -- part classical, part Christian, part rock & roll -- seems destined to find few devotees of all three.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD! His play on words is amazing!.......1999-06-01

You must always listen to Bruton's music several times before you truly appreciate what he is saying and playing. In my opinion, he's one of the best writers around. His play on words will cause you to relate and think about certain situations. The different type sounds on several of the songs are completely different when compared to the first two CD's, and it's somewhat distracting at first. Overall, the more you play the CD, the more addicting it becomes. Great music/words!

I wouldn't lie. I tell NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH. Stephen Bruton's new CD is addicting!I recommend that you run, don't TRIP, STUMBLE OR FALL to your nearest record store and buy it. You'll love it! And that's NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH!

    4 out of 5 stars Great Songwriter!!!.......1999-02-07

Wonderful road music! Take this for a spin on a sunny day, top down, in your '56 Pontiac Fire Chief. Bruton is undoubtedly one of the clever songwriters of his time. He is rapidly moving the Austin Sound from Folk/Country to "Austin Rock". His tunes continue on a path blazed by the likes of Tom Petty. Unlike Petty, Bruton plays his own guitar leads and they are built out of guitarist fantasies. This is a different album for Bruton and breaks some from the style of his first two albums. Bonnie Raitt sang on his two previous albums: "Right on Time" and "What It Is". On this album Jennifer Warnes sings background vocals, Mickey Raphael (usually with Willie Nelson) is on Harmonica, Sean Hopper (usually with Huey Lewis) is on Hammond B-3 Organ. The first two albums seem to only be available at his concerts or on the stephenbruton.com web site. It would be great if Amazon.com had them for sale. The stephenbruton.com web site had some interesting pictures of his days as Bonnie Raitt's guitarist. I hope you enjoy this Bruton experience as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing But The Truth is the best CD Stephen Bruton has done.......1999-01-28

The funky groove that pervades this entire compilation is beyond cool. It is one of the singularly sexiest CD's I've ever heard.

Title cut, Nothing But The Truth, haunts me. Nobody Gets Hurt, co-written with Al Anderson & Sharon Vaughn makes me want to dance to that great synthesizer beat. Listening to Bruton's incredibly sexy voice speak the words to When Love Finds You, gives me chills. The lyrics to That's Love are typically Bruton. I love the way he puts things in perspective. "Every single soul has but a handful of days, in this dream that we call life, a pair of eyes so you can see both sides, a twisted sense of humor and a tongue like a knife." The opening twang of Stephen's guitar on Everything Happens for a Reason, continues the very funky groove theme. Dogs May Bark is yet another song with great lyrics, great insight. Trip, Stumble and Fall is the only song on the CD that does not absolutely hold my interest. Nothing wrong with it, just not my favorite. Against My Will is this CD's most beautiful love ballad. Stephen makes you think he's singing about you when he talks of love. Trip Around the Sun is now my favorite birthday song. She's The Reason, co-written with one of my favorites, Gary Nicholson, is a very bluesy love song, no ballad here. Under The Horizon is a great example of Bruton's exquisite phrasing. Incredible visual description of the night sky. As far as I'm concerned, Stephen Bruton is The King of Everything. The man knows how to write a great song, plays a fabulous guitar and can arrange and produce music that will stay with you for a lifetime. Spirit Lake is a beautifully played guitar piece that puts you at peace.

I love this CD! Buy several.

        Album Description

Co-produced with Francis Buckley and Steve Shepherd, this release contains a number of beautifully crafted adult contemporary pop songs such as "Nothing But The Truth" and "Isabella". "Me And My Banana" indicates that Paul still maintains his unique sense of humor. Personal and vulnerable, this album is softer, with more of a jazz influence than "It Takes Two".
