    5 out of 5 stars pure gold.......2001-01-31

    First the bad news, there are a couple tracks here that are just plain wretched. Whoever thought to put the Olivia Newton-John track on this must have been smoking bananas or was knee-slapping themselves silly in the studio. Same goes for the Phil Keaggy track (The original one-CD tribute "Strong Hand of Love" had a terrible track by Phil [different song- same result] and Bruce Carroll, which have mercifully been left off here). The remainder of the bad news are tracks by artists who's minds either temporally left them (Marvin Etzioni, Ramona Silver) choose bad arrangements (John Austin, Bob) are just wrong for Mark's material (Iain, Carolyn Arends, Glen Kaiser) or (since I'm writing the review) songs I don't like (Kate Taylor, Tom Prasada-Rao). Which leaves us with the good news, and mighty good news it is, for there are 20 or so tracks here that are a perfect marriage of artist and material, transforming Mark's already world class songs to even higher heights: Vigilantes Of Love's "Freight Train To Nowhere," Harrod and Funck's "Worry Too Much," Pat Terry's "Mercy of the Flame," Pierce Pettis' "Nod Over Coffee," Randy Stonehill and Kate Miner's "Look Over Your Shoulder," Big Faith's "All She Wanted Was Love," Daniel Amos' "Strong Hand Of Love," Chagall Guevara's "Treasure Of A Broken Land," Ashley Cleveland's "It's Not Your Fault," Dan Russell "I Just Wanna Get Warm," Brooks Williams' "Rise From the Ruins," Bruce Cockburn's "Strong Hand of Love," The Williams Brothers' "House of Broken Dreams," Kevin Smith's "Lonely Moon," Tonio K's "Another Day in Limbo," Swinging Steaks' "Long Way Down," Colin Linden's "Dry Bones Dance" and especially Michael Been's "We Know Too Much," and Buddy & Julie Miller's "Orphans of God." I've listened to these songs hundreds of times... its shameful hyperbole, but I think they are comparable to anything, anytime, anywhere, Beatles, Beach Boys, Beethoven, you name it, pure unadulterated gold. {note to the reviewer below, Mark Heard was 41 years old when he died in 1992}

    5 out of 5 stars Honest music from an honest heart.......2000-12-31

    I discovered Mark Heard after learning of his premature death from a heart attack in is early 30's. Like many geniuses before him, the true appreciation for his work goes unheralded until after the passing of his life.

    It takes a special kind of person to fully appreciate Mark Heard's music. It is classified as "Contemporary Christian" but reaches way beyond any category or easilly classified section of a musical libary. While mostly folk-rock in the vein of Bruce Cockburn, Mark Heard also can appeal to the hearts of people who can appreciate a wide variety of music. And on Orphans Of God, the assembly of the various artists who recorded the songs in memory of this great artist explore a variety of musical territories. It never exceeds into anything unlistenable; each contributor brings to the canvas an unique color that, when blended together, leave an amazing painting.

    Mark Heard once wrote a song called "Stuck in the Middle" (not on this CD, unfortunately. For those interested, I strongly suggest seeking out Mark's music IN ADDITION TO buying this double disc set. I don't know if I am allowed to put any addresses in this review for other sites, but seek out his music on any search engine. Well worth the extra effort!). Truly, his music is stuck in the middle as he felt his life was. It's not quite the normal Christian fodder that passes for CCM these days (thus his obscurity in Christian circles) nor is his religious tones and honest, probing lyrics quite the normal top fourty fodder for main stream radio (thus his obscurity in secular music circles.) But if you enjoy digging diamonds out of coal, if you enjoy seeking out treasures and finding great and exciting music unlike you ever heard before, I suggest picking up this CD set. Well worth the time, the effort, and the price.
