5 out of 5 stars An eclectic collection of top 10 tunes from the Sixties.......2003-11-05

"Top Hits Of The Sixties: Coolest Hits" is not, despite the above claim, a collection of #1 songs from that particular decade, although all twenty of these tracks made it to the top region of the Billboard tracks. The only serious complaint with this collection is that it ignores the British invasion, which keeps it from being a truly representative sampling of Sixties music. What this CD collection has in its favor is that it has some of the more eclectic hits from that period: Lorne Greene's "Ringo," the theme from "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly," "The Ballad Of The Green Berets" by Ssgt. Barry Sadler, and "In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)" by the paradigmatic one hit wonders Zager & Evans. I think this more than counterbalances the bubblegum ("Yummy Yummy Yummy," "Simon Says") and other perky songs by lightweight artists ("We'll Sing In The Sunshine," "The Worst That Can Happen"). There are only two mega-hits in the mix, The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City" and The 5th Dimensions' "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In," but the value of these collections is not to have another CD with hit songs you already own on hit collections by the actual groups. The value is always going to be if you can add five or more songs to your music collection that you do not already have. With songs like "Oh Happy Day" there is an above average chance that "Top Hits of the Sixties: Coolest Hits" will meet that challenge, especially by offering a more than respectable 20 tracks on a single disc.
