Yet another compilation of Al Green's classic Hi Records work from the '70s, the double-CD autobiography tie-in Take Me to the River serves more as a substitute for than a supplement to his Greatest Hits and More Greatest Hits. However you get these tracks, though, get 'em: Green, producer Willie Mitchell, and the celebrated Hi rhythm section practically redefined the sensuous and the sinuous in soul music. In addition to timeless singles such as "Let's Stay Together," "Tired of Being Alone," and "Look What You Done for Me," River also collects lesser-known but equally magical slices of sexy romance such as the title track and "I'm Glad You're Mine." While not as full a portrait of this one-of-a-kind artist (and man) as the three-CD Anthology, it's a worthy introduction. --Rickey Wright

The Kronos Quartet have been luminaries of modern Western classical music for more than thirty years. So despite their previous forays into world music, a headlong dive into the alternative universe of Bollywood (Bombay-plus-Hollywood) soundtracks may seem somewhat incongruous. But Kronos leader David Harrington is a longtime fan of composer R.D. Burman¹s florid pop extravaganzas, which propelled an already saturated palette into day-glo and beyond. To get the project off the ground, he had to convince one of India¹s prolific and versatile "playback" singers to come on board. The legendary Asha Bhosle is a renowned Burman interpreter so securing her services was a major coup. To replicate the reverb-laden "wall of sound" typical of Burman arrangements, Kronos and Ashaji, accompanied by Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain and Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man, overdubbed themselves into a teeming multitude. However, there is nothing soulless or "canned" about the results; indeed, composer and singer emerge refreshed and more vivid than ever before, shaking their stuff amid swirling Technicolor veils of tongue-in-cheek mystery and sensuality. --Christina Roden

Sumptuous and surreal, the Kronos Quartet and Asha Bhosle's You've Stolen My Heart is not unlike the colorful, melodramatic Indian film musicals to which it pays tribute. Eight of its twelve tracks feature superstar Bollywood film playback singer Asha Bhosle, widely considered the world's most recorded vocalist. The songs were chosen from the repertoire of her husband, the late composer R.D. Burman, who revolutionized the sound of the movies produced at Mumbai's (formerly Bombay) fabled studios, a.k.a. Bollywood.

Now in her early 60s, Asha Bhosle's voice has matured since the heyday of her Bollywood career in the 60s-70s and in these reworkings of some of her greatest hits (written by her late husband R.K.Burman) it's positively honey-like. The collaboration with Kronos Quartet is inspired: substitute electronically enhanced violins for Duane Eddy guitars and you have an inkling of the ideas flying around the disc. The liner notes are informative and there's plenty of information for the Bollywood novice. However, whether you understand Hindi or not, this is a collection of songs - humorous, romantic, tacky, and at times so hilariously naff in the way of Indian homages to western pop it's actually cool! I would be amazed if you don't want to keep going back to it, once heard.

Chronos has always emphasized being clever over being musical- although they are splendid musicians- and this album is perhaps the ultimate exegesis of that. The actual music is perhaps exotic, to western ears, but it is also uninteresting. Indian film music combines the sound of the East with the banality of pop, and the result isn't anything that bears more than one listening; personally, I was continually reminded of the incidental Indian-themed music that kept popping up in the Beatles' movie "Help", although that soundtrack was a bit more clever. Another volume for the library of the die-hard Chronos fan, perhaps, but not necessarily anyone alse.

Some vocalists are one-of-a-kind, brilliant and beautiful, setting the standard for their particular music. Asha Bhosle is one of them. I heard her with the Kronos in performance in San Francisco, and they took my breath away. This album isn't quite the same as being there but it's very, very close. Asha, Kronos - please do it again!

I dont know how the kronos quartet to come down so low. The music is cheap. I couldn't hear any of the tracks completely. They were so insipid.Complete waste of money. I have heard much better from Asha.

I love Asha Bhosle and one only has to listen to her Live at the Albert Hall album. Problem is, she has aged, and her voice shows it. Regrettably, her vocals on this album constantly remind me of this and I can't listen to the album with pleasure. I would say the same of such wonderful singers as June Carter and Amalia Mendoza. This was a wonderful opportunity to introduce much of the world to the zaniness of Bollywood movie music, with its fabulous arrangements and wacky use of all imaginable instruments from all over the world. Instead it makes me sad to hear Asha not at her peak.

I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

A local New York professional opera enthusiast has concluded that Corelli is the most popular operatic tenor, followed by Jussi Bjoerling. But if the question is, who had the most beautiful tenor voice ever impressed upon wax, we must lift up John McCormack. Here is true bel canto which no one else has ever equalled. These two CD's contain some of the most exquisite sounds ever issued by a human throat. Let the galleries declare their enthusiasm for stentorian high C's, the real lover of great singing will find much more to their like her than in all the verisssimo arias. Listen to the two "Mefistofele" Arias (Boito) and ask yourself if they have ever since been so beautifully sung. This recording belongs in the collection of every aspiring tenor, just to remind what can be accomplished by art and perfect singing.

If you remember hearing transfers of acoustic recordings to LP, you remember how hard it was to really connect with the music and performer through all the rumble, noise and resonance. This audio restoration is the most astonishing technical feat I have ever heard. The noise is now only a gentle background presence, not the roar of yesteryear. And even more important, it is constant in volume- in other words not a distraction. The fidelity really lets us hear what the early recording engineers really achieved. That said, what this brings to us are the performances of one of the world's greatest singers in richly emotional popular songs (and a few opera arias). There are so many of those old sentimental pieces no one could get away with recording anymore, but hold such a splendid reward for those of us who love them. John McCormack's recordings receive with this reissue the wonderful presentation they so richly deserve. Many many thanks to the label and Mr. Marston who made it possible.

This along with Vol. 1 is simply the best McCormack transfers available from this period. The master of the trade, Ward Marston has outdone himself this time. Waiting for Vols. 3,4,5!

As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)

Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.

But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

However you get these tracks, though, get 'em: Green, producer Willie Mitchell, and the celebrated Hi rhythm section practically redefined the sensuous and the sinuous in soul music. In addition to timeless singles such as "Let's Stay Together," "Tired of Being Alone," and "Look What You Done for Me," River also collects lesser-known but equally magical slices of sexy romance such as the title track and "I'm Glad You're Mine." ...there are some shortcomings in the sound quality on a couple of songs and if you are a serious Al Green fan then you probably already own most of the material on this release, especially on disc 1, but come on now...THIS IS THE BEST COLLECTION OF HIS MATERIAL TO DATE!...you have the meat of most of his classics and the gravy of some of his lesser-knowns. HERE I AM (COME AND TAKE ME) is an ultimate slow-burner for me, PLUS: HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART? RIGHT NOW, RIGHT NOW? this album is butter!

The Reverend Al Green's talents are on full display in 2-disc collection that is a must for any fan of R&B. Talk about a great walk down memory lane--Al can take me to the river anytime. I recently toured the Smithsonian "Rock & Soul" exhibit in Memphis and it reinforced what a significant position Al holds in modern music.

I haven't bought a CD as worthwhile as this SENSATIONAL Al Green album in a long time. In fact I can't remember the last cd i played as much as this day in and day out! I had never listened to Al Green before and heard some good songs on one of my father's al green albums so I bought this one for myself. I have listened to it to and from work, in my apartment, at work, in my car, in the shower! This cd is simply one of the greatest albums I have ever listened to. For $20 this cd is the most well spent money I have ever spent on an album. This album is worth it even if it cost $100!. Another reviewer gave it a terrible rating and that person doesn't know what they are talking about. Take my word for it: you will not be disappointed. The songs: Love and Happiness, Here I am Baby, Look What you Done for Me, Call Me, God Blessed our Love, Lean on Me, and You ought to be with me are all the greatest! I wake up each day and go to work and this gives me incentive to get out of bed so I can put on this CD!

I LOVE Al Green, but this cd does NOT do him justice, and also it is a badly recorded cd, sounds vary from cut to cut, I returned it and said "They should really take that out of production. Al Green is really good and this cd is terrible."
