These Days

Produced by Greg Nelson, Brent Bourgeois and Hal S. Batt, Sandi Patty's These Days seems to be, at first, an interesting diversion from the lush, orchestrated sounds and lyrical depth of 1998's Artist of My Soul. From the surprisingly fast-paced pop opener, "Wouldn't Trade It for the World," to the strobe-lighted dance mix of "Shine," to the slight Spanish strings heard in "These Are the Days," there are signs that these fine producers have been working overtime to surprise the listener. And progress and variety are fine and well. The problem is, whether the listener has been a fan since before the Larnelle Harris duet days or an excited newcomer who hadn't heard her sing until a trip to hear the Dallas Symphony this year, people expect more of Sandi Patty than musical variety and pop invention. People listen to Sandi Patty to hear her deliver lyrics so compelling the hair on the back of their necks stands up. They listen to hear her grab those high notes and wring the life out of them without even making half an effort.
And while These Days offers a few powerful moments, including the beautiful bi-lingual duet "Solo El Amor (Only Love)" with Miguel Guerra and the poignant, Celtic-tinged "Go Without Knowing," the songs here are largely forgettable. In These Days, the Sandi Patty thrill is waning, if not momentarily gone. -- Melissa Riddle (c) 2000 CCM Communications, Inc.

These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic.
The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You."
The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood. The stunning "Faint of Heart," a remarkably sultry jazz duet with Diana Krall, could become a standard.
Some Things Never Get Old revisits classic fiddle-steel honky-tonk, music Gill has long reverenced and referenced. "This New Heartache" is straight out of Ray Price. Gill and Patty Loveless tear up "Out of My Mind" and Allison Krauss and Dan Tyminski join in for the waltz "I Can't Let Go." "Don't Pretend with Me" honors Ernest Tubb's honky-tonk primitivism.
Little Brother, all-acoustic and often bluegrass-flavored, shines from beginning to end. Along with "Molly Brown," a stark cautionary about racial violence, Gill sings both "Cold Gray Light of Dawn" and "Give Me the Highway" with the Del McCoury Band. He and Guy Clark close it out with "Almost Home." Despite outstanding past efforts, Gill--one of the top hitmakers of the '90s--hasn't had a Top Ten single since 2000. No matter. His talents and the heart he puts into his writing, singing, and picking remain at their peak. This stellar collection proves it--four times over. --Rich Kienzle
Album Description
In an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock.
"I started looking at all these songs I had," the amiable superstar explains, "and going, `Shoot, I want to record that song, and I want to record that song.' I just kept checking with the other musicians to see if they were available. I had no deadlines, no rules or anything like that. So I just kept trying songs."
To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.
Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he'd recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.
Gill took the idea to Luke Lewis, Universal Music Group Nashville Co-Chairman, who totally supported his notion of multiple releases. In fact, Lewis came up with an even more radical strategy: he told Vince to go and record more songs that explore his passion for acoustic sounds and release a 4-CD set. And that's exactly what happened.
Gill co-produced These Days with famed keyboardist John Hobbs and sound engineering whiz Justin Niebank.
Customer Reviews:
These Days ~ Vince Gill.......2007-07-07
A lot of the songs are vintage Vince Gill. His guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The duets are wonderful. His guest singers blend well with Vince's, oh so sweet, tenor. I love the album, but give it only four stars because so many of the songs are featured on albums I already own.
Inspired by negative reviews.......2007-05-21
Before ordering this CD set, I read most of the reviews on Amazon. A couple of them were very negative. However, I just couldn't believe in a "bad" recording session from Vince Gill. Especially with the great stars who collaborated as guests on many of the cuts.
Well, the good news is the negative reports were just wrong. I like these CD's, there are four in the box set, more every time I listen to them. An excellent product and a great addition to any music collection that loves ballads, country, bluegrass, and yes: Vince!!
These Days by Vince Gill.......2007-05-13
This item is a must buy for all Vince Gill fans. We purchased it after seeing in Vince in concert. The concert was great, but you can't have that all the time. His range as a musician is evident throughout this 4 CD set. Plus, the musicians he surrounds himself with make this a must buy.
Vince Gill - These Days.......2007-05-13
I'm a long time fan of Vince Gill but this album is his best. A must have for any Vince Gill fan!!
Simply awesome !!!.......2007-05-12
This CD set is well worth the money. Actually, it's priced very reasonable. There are alot of new songs. All 4 CD's are excellant.
Again, Vince Gill delivers !!

Quintessential Bom Jovi Album.......2007-04-13
I had been a fan of Bon Jovi in my early adolescence before they had even released this album. I had never been a "one-album-person" as I always mixed my own tapes for my perfect custom taste! Yet this album came along and it had what it takes for the whole album to keep running.
A great buy, in my opinion. And if anything were to happen to my copy, I would not hesitate to purchase another one. And (what the heck!) from Amazon.com too!
MY SECOND PERSONAL FAV!!!.......2007-02-17
Words cannot describe how awesome BON JOVI is!!! I am their #1 fan and no other group in this world produces such quality / entertaining / heartfelt music. I RECOMMEND YOU BUY THESE DAYS and ALL OF THEIR CDs!!!
best ever.......2007-01-13
This is the third time I have bought this. First time was a cassette, then a cd. When my cd got bad I purchased another. Being a Bon Jovi Fan for the last twenty some years, I will tell you that this is my absolute favorite. I listen to it all the time and never get tired of it. Different than their early stuff, you might have to give it a couple a listens before deciding. Love it, love it, love it!
Bon Jovi's Best Album, Even Better.......2006-09-06
THESE DAYS, which is already Bon Jovi's best album, is even better remastered. The band sounds here like East Jersey's answer to all the great Southern rock bands of the 70s, which is not surprising when you consider Jon Bon Jovi's belief, shared with those bands, that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted, which, along with his advocacy of increased funding for law enforcement, makes this album an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
deeper side of bon jovi.......2006-08-01
This album is a deeper side of Bon Jovi and it's also one of the best on my opinion.
Songs like Hey God, My Guitars Lies Bleeding In My Arms, It's Hard Letting You Go, Something To Believe In, and Diamond Ring has very deep lyrics. And This Aint A Lovesong is a very sad lovesong as it says on the title.
The only songs that really has a typical Bon Jovi sound is Something For The Pain, This Aint a Lovesong is a typical Bon Jovi ballad, and Heart's Breaking Even and Lie To Me as well.
But I like this album even though if it has a deeper sound.

The magical triad behind Rushmore's spunky, starry-eyed soundtrack--music supervisor Randall Poster, composer Mark Mothersbaugh, and director Wes Anderson--leaps forward a decade from that beloved soundtrack's '60s gems, in the process adopting a more pensive feel for The Royal Tenenbaums' musical backdrop. It may lack the euphoric sing-along feel of, say, Creation's "Makin' Time," but the rock and folk tracks here perfectly match the film's crumbling characters and their dilapidated relationships. The Ramones' "Judy Is a Punk" is a burst of nostalgic rebellion but surely causes a sad twinge in light of Joey Ramone's untimely death in 2001; gloom-folker Nick Drake's "Fly" and Elliott Smith's excellently depressing "Needle in the Hay"--which is used to chilling effect during a wrist-slashing scene--further deepen the dark thread running through Tenenbaums. But those who prefer the sunny disposition of Rushmore will be thrilled by the calming concoctions of Mothersbaugh, who heralds the coming of a new scene with graceful woodwind/string parts ("Scrapping and Yelling") and playful sitar pieces ("Pagoda's Theme"). Throw in the Clash's squalling "Police & Thieves" and the Velvet Underground's petal-soft "Stephanie Says" and you've got another winning soundtrack from the film biz's most in-tune music lovers. Tenenbaum or not, you can go home again. --Kristy Martin
Customer Reviews:
Great easy listenening .......2007-02-02
I like this soundtrack because its very laid back. Enjoyable songs that help you relax.
Help trying to figure out the title of a song.......2006-04-17
Hey, maybe you guys can help me, does anyone know the title of the song playing on a radio while owen wilson is getting high (or preparing to do so) with his friends and his dad and brother step in and tell him they want to help him. I really love that song and i have no idea what the title is
omitted song.......2006-02-01
For anyone interested, one song which was omitted from the soundtract which has not been mentioned is:
Emitt Rhodes - Lullabye
A beautiful track played in the scence where Royal is lying in his bed sucking down a shake and reading a book when Chas say "lights out old man" and switchs off the light. One of my fav songs in the movie along side the rolling stones - she smiled sweetly. sadly both songs were omitted but still a beautiful soundtrack.
Where's Van Morrison?!.......2005-03-16
This is a near-perfect collection of 60's and 70's pop and folk. The sad but hopeful vibe of the songs fits the movie's tone perfectly and you can't really agrue with songs like "Stephanie Says." it's also nice to hear the two Nico cuts since Nico's solo work really doesn't get the acclaim it deserves these days. My problem with this album is that it favors symphonic songs from the film instead of pop songs also used in it such as "Ruby Tuesday" and Van Morrison's "Everyone." I'm really bummed about the exclusion of "Everyone" because i thought it closed the movie so well. They should have released the score and the soundtrack separately so all these great songs could be included.
The Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack.......2005-03-14
The Collector's Edition Soundtrack leaves out two great Rolling Stones' tunes She Smiled Sweetly & Ruby Tuesday. Also left to the winds is John Lennon's Look at Me, the Clash's Rock the Kazbah. The First Edition leaves a few tunes off too but it is a far better Soundtrack. Puckstar

Gino Vannelli - These Are The Days.......2007-05-30
The man still has it! This CD is a perfect demonstration of his growth and flexibility. Although his old music is classic, he has also dispensed new material in the opera and jazz genres as well. My favorites on this CD are "Venus Envy", "Right Where I Am", and "It's Only Love". These should receive much more airplay than they do. Its too bad Mr. Vannelli's music is still as underrated as it is!
Gino's latest...... " These Are The Day's ".......2007-03-20
This album was released in fall of 2006 and for me I have been playing it every day. The first half of the CD - 7 tracks - is new material and show Gino's range of writing skills, just like his last album Canto from 2003. The reason that I gave it 4 stars out of 5 is I was disapointed in the second half of the album. They are older songs from past albums which would have been OK had he put a new spin too them. I know from watching a DVD about the last album Canto and his mind set about what all the album was too be about, that he had a slower version of "I Just Wanna Stop". It was live on stage with the full orchastria and showed his openness to rethink a song in his past and make it sound new. So I was hoping this would be on the CD but sadly it was not to be, but still a good listen of your time. I have been a dedicated fan of his work since 1976 when I saw him live and I have every album and half of his concert tour DVD's, so I know a little about his unique sound.
Mellow fun tunes.......2007-01-08
Finally something new from one of my favorite artists. The new stuff is quite good, kind of jazzy and fun, but still not as great as some of my earlier favorites. Generallly upbeat, great vocals. Should be liked by most Gino fans.
He's Back!!!.......2006-07-27
Yes, we all know half the CD is "old stuff." Whatever- I'm paying for the new stuff. "It's Only Love" is probably the hippest thing he's ever done. A guy trying to be cool about getting dumped, "excuse me while I go off and die." You have to listen to it over and over to catch everything. "Venus Envy" would be my second favorite. Its message is great- why do women feel they need all that plastic surgery?
"Great Divide" is so sad, so full of that realization that, "Oh, boy, I have really screwed up my life."
It's also great to hear his voice sounding as good as twenty years ago. So many singers really lose range and force as they age. No, he's not going to hit those "Fly into this Night" high notes. He's 54, okay? But, with this release, I think Gino can really get the spotlight back on himself, gain better backing, and really come out with some terrific stuff in the future.
new good, and old still good.......2006-07-13
the only thing about this cd that is bad is all the songs were not new, but Im glad for the new 6 and they are really good.
they are not the old sound from the 70's but they are good .
he has gone a new way on some of the new songs and they are very
good with a little twist here and there with a sound he has never done before which is good seeing this is 2006, I hope tho that he goes on tour to sapport this cd cos he would sell a lot more if he did.Is this something your need to have ? Yes!

On Sea Music, former Del Fuegos frontman turned kid's music songster Dan Zanes performs a set of old sea shanties in a rough-hewn but charming manner. He takes songs that have been worn smooth from constant use, artfully scuffs them up, and restores them to their former "ragged but right" glory. His performance of "Shenandoah," for example, features some fine Leadbelly-style 12-string guitar picking and an anguished vocal that almost erases the memory of the polite, formal choral arrangements that usually smother the song. And his "Sloop John B" sails along on jaunty banjos and mandolins rather than the slick harmonies of the Beach Boys' version. These shanties were originally created by sailors as work songs, and consequently they have choruses that are perfect for singing along. Zanes is joined on many tracks by an enthusiastic chorus of kids who are obviously having a wonderful time belting out the sometimes salty lyrics. As with all of Zanes's recordings for children, adults are likely to find themselves listening to this wonderful music even when the kids aren't underfoot. --Michael John Simmons
Customer Reviews:
On any list of great "kids" CDs you will love too........2007-03-28
My personal favorite of DZ's "kids" records.
This one *is* great for sing-alongs with the kids, but is a fine old timey record of sea songs that can be enjoyed by anyone. Loose-limbed versions of "Shenendoah", "Sloop John B" and "Cape Cod Girls" are fine and fun.
"Strike The Bell", "Blow Ye Winds", "Leaving of Liverpool" and others are fun sing-alongs as well as good history lessons. My 3.5 year-old and I enjoy this record equally.
It's particularly nice that Zanes' website has the lyrics AND chords -- really helps extend the listening and playing pleasure. I also appreciate that DZ doesn't dumb down the music for kids at all -- you get a real feel of the folk tradition of handmade music here.
great for kids, great for adults!.......2007-02-27
for a fun cd of classic sea shanties, and a kids' cd that you won't get sick of, this is the one. we've given this to many kids (2 and up) and all parents have been very thankful! we've had it for 2 yrs. and we listen to it all the time.
favorite.......2007-01-10
This cd stays in our car stereo for weeks and weeks. We sing a long and our 3 yr old likes it too.
Disappointing.......2006-06-01
I like anything to do with the sea and I bought this CD on the strength of the glowing reviews. Having lived in a port city in England that hosts an annual Sea Shanty festival, I was fortunate to hear some of the best shanty singers around. I had high expectations for Dan Zales and was sorely let down. The music is basic and unpolished, which should be a good thing. Shanties are supposed to be raw, gutsy. But the quality of the music here is downright amateurish -- merely a sing-a-long with the children in the kitchen. I wanted more for my money.
Great CD for kids and adults.......2006-03-29
I played this CD in the car while taking my great granddaughter (8 mos) to work yesterday. The songs were so irresitable I found myself singing along, even with chanties I'd not heard before. Then, from the back seat, I heard loud cooing and chortling noises in a little voice. Morgan was singing along too. Guess this CD is a hit with everyone.

Life and Death On The Great White Way.......2007-06-24
Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.
Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.
What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.
As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.
The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.
There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

Fantastic!.......2007-06-18
A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!
Well executed, entertaining, musical.......2007-03-25
The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'
Eclectic Mix.......2007-02-24
Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.
"Bye, bye love"...........2007-02-09
Loved the DVD and this CD is just as entertaining. George Benson oozes showmanship so much so that it comes across just listening. "On Broadway and Bye bye love" are the stand out's.

Their best probably........2006-07-11
1995 was one of the best years musically and this record is realeased in that year. I don't care what anywone says These Days might be their best effort mainly because it's so consistent. There's more good songs then on 'Keep the Faith' although the singles on that album were sronger. This album contains just good songwriting, honest lyrics and great melodies. Even I thought I wouldn't get to like these ballad rockers but I like good music and that's what this is. Get this and Keep the Faith because after These days they started making cheesy music.
I Understand Disappointment, But It Is Still Good. .......2006-07-10
For those of you who gave this record low ratings, I understand your disappointment. I myself missed the tremendous energy of "7800," "Slippery When Wet," and "New Jersey." Even my mother (who leans toward "New Jersey," "Blaze of Glory," and "Keep the Faith") said that this 7th record lacked something. But even though this record lacks the energy of "7800," "Slippery When Wet," "New Jersey," and even "Keep the Faith," it is good in its own way. Generally speaking, this is a softer and more somber record by Bon Jovi. (And we can probably argue more depressing as well.) The record starts with a driving edge. 'Hey God' is of a strength somewhere between "New Jersey" and "Slippery When Wet." From here, the different tone of the record is obvious. 'Something For the Pain' has somewhat of a grunge sound; 'This Aint A Love Song' lacks the edge of former days, but it is still good; 'These Days' is a moving track that reflects that all things end; 'Lie To Me' is a little trite; 'Damned' is an attempt to put a heavier song on the record, but it succeeds moderately at best; 'My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms' is another depressing, but well written song; 'It's Hard Letting You Go' may sound a little clicheish, but Bon Jovi has a way of compensating for trite by adding some of his own touches; 'Heart's Breaking Even' is yet another sad song, but interestingly it has an almost upbeat tone; 'Something To Believe In' is a good song with somewhat of an edge; 'If That's What It Takes' is a decent song with a moderate edge; finally, 'Diamond Ring' is yet another slow but good song. Overall, this record has a good sound and consistency, but you have to be willing to accept that it is an articulate, but slower, sadder, and more depressing side of Bon Jovi. If you're only looking for Bon Jovi's old school stuff, then you do best to avoid this 7th record. You will only be disappointed. However, if you are willing to accept that this is a good record, but different, then by all means, buy this and enjoy.
Just as good as, if not better than, Keep The Faith.......2006-01-19
I know that some BJ fans are not into this album. What I don't understand is how many of those fans who love Keep The Faith don't like These Days. The albums are very similar: You got your arena rock songs in I Believe and If That's What It Takes. It's Hard Letting You Go, This Aint a Love Song and Lie To Me are gorgeous ballads no less beautiful and melodic than I Want You and Bed Of Roses. Hearts Breaking Even and Something For The Pain are a bit heavier, up-tempoed ballads (if there is such a thing) just like In These Arms. These Days is just a more abridged version of Dry County. Keep The Faith is your real rocker/punkish song, which is just like Damned (and both their ends feature the same descending scream of "Yah Yah Yah!"). If I Was Your Mother is the real straight rock song, and so is Hey God as well as what My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms builds up to. In short, the one difference between the two albums is that KTF is a more light-hearted album with songs such as Blame It On The Love of Rock&Roll, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, and Little Bit of Soul, whereas These Days is much darker with songs such as Hey God, Something To Believe In, and, now that I think about it, basically every song on the album. However, this darkness is in no way a turn-off. In fact, it makes the album genuine and powerful and full of emotion. I've said it before and I'll say it again: These Days is my all-time favorite Bon Jovi album. Keep The Faith kicks ass, Slippery When Wet and New Jersey are laden with hits and timeless tunes, Crush is poppy and catchy, This Left Feels Right is a unique, mature, highly appreciated redesigning of their hits, Bon Jovi and 7800 Farenheit are classic in their own right, but THESE DAYS IS THE COMPLETE PACKAGE! Every song is filled with emotion. Every song has beautiful, thoughtful lyrics (unlike If I Was Your Mother, where the song rocks, but the lyrics are weak). Every song is perfectly arranged with awesome instrumentation and flawless vocals. If you're a Bon Jovi fan who dislikes this album, but likes Keep The Faith, take my word about the similarities and give it another listen. If you're a Bon Jovi fan who likes neither, you're hopeless. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, but know their hits, listen to These Days; it's the ultimate Bon Jovi album.
The best Jovi yet!.......2004-04-02
It was obvious that Jon and the band were going through some emotional and religious changes through the making of this CD. I loved it! The song These Days is the real world, in a nutshell.
The Ultimate "Grows On You" Album.......2003-12-05
People are funny. Some love this album and some hate it, and more than a few hardcore fans just don't care about this one. First off, just to Keep Going at a time when quality rock music was under its greatest threat since disco (with the likes of shallowtallent Grunge giants) deserves a gold medal.
Although there are great arguments for why this is a great album (decent diversity, a few musical moments to shine, an "evolved" sound), even I almost lost the faith right around the "Always" era.
People only look at this album as opposed to the number one hit that came before it when judging it. "Always" was a less-musical version of megahiddengem "I Want You" from '92's masterpiece "Keep the Faith." Alas, it got all the attention, and as always in this industry, you gotta follow it up with something that makes sense (or alteast you think you should). But anyone that knows the principles of cause and effect knows that every stimulus brings consequences.
Hence a ballad-heavy album and softer singles (starting with "This Ain't A Love Song"). And a band in their mid thirties. I never thought this was a bad album, but most agree there was a magic, a fire, that previous efforts oozed, that this album just sort of sat on. The band was maturing, but in a bit of a worried way, just because the music they had just made 2 years ago was so good. And don't forget, it's possible the addition of Hugh could have been atleast a mild contributing factor to the change in group dynamics too. I love their ballads amazingly, but I smelled a change in chemistry at this time.
Fortunately they THEN got to work on the long and tedious process of showing to the world they weren't JUST a ballad band (isn't time funny, NOW they're having to show the world they aren't just a "Livin On A Prayer" band). Anyone who saw them on tour in '95 saw them rip into "Rockin' In The Free World" and never look back. I found the French release of the album and was treated to the two bonus tracks "All I Want Is Everything" and "Bitter Wine" which are better than most of the album tracks. I focused on the heavy interlude in "My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms" and something happened; I curiously started listening to the album with a frequency almost as great as previous albums.
4 Years Later, in 1999, I had an epiphany. Not that everyone has to get the same thing I do, we all respond in different ways. I was on vacation and listening to the album; the first ever Bon Jovi song I flat-out DID NOT LIKE ("Something to Believe In") followed into my ears. And when Jon did the most gutwrenching scream that I ever heard (towards the end), it was really weird. I sat up and adrenaline started flowing, emotions ran wild, and a lightbulb came on. I got "it." The "it" that this album speaks to me. It might speak differently to you, but once again baffled by the fools who call Bon Jovi campy and cheesy, I understood the profound emotional bedding within the framework that is "These Days." And now, I think it is a truly remarkable effort. Needless to say, I love ALL the songs now.
If you are a patient and understanding human being and you own "Keep the Faith", "New Jersey," and "Bounce", it is in your best interest to get this album. Just don't have any preconceived expectations of what it should be.

Smart, Cynical and Heartbreaking.......2006-02-17
Driving North is a really incredible album. Chris's poignant lyrics and intricate guitar make this cd really stand out. Every single track is exceptional. If you are going to by one new folk album this year, I recommend Driving North.
Utterly Amazing.......2005-10-05
I have seen Chris perform twice, everytime she plays she captivates her audience and wills a sense of calm. Her voice alone is enough to buy the cd, but the passion that lies under the surface is astounding, evoking images of torn lovers reminiscing about times past, silos full of hay and passionate love. Her music moves the soul.
Stupendous Songwriting and Stunning Voice.......2005-07-09
If you're a fan of singer/songwriters along the lines of Patty Griffin, Cheryl Wheeler, Lucinda Williams and Elyza Gilkyson, then there's a fairly good chance that you will rejoice in the music of Chris Pureka. This New England-based folkie combines lyrical songwriting ability with an emotionally expressive (and thoroughly husky) voice, drawing you in with her simple homespun songs about heartache, happiness and the change of the seasons. Drenching the songs in the imagery of her surroundings, Pureka creates a soundtrack for East Coast travels, evoking some to compare "Driving North" to Bruce Springsteen's early '80s masterpiece "Nebraska." On gorgeous ballads like "Unwelcome" and "3 a.m.," she nails matters of the heart, while on driving, insistent tunes like the haunting "Silo Song" and "Reprieve," she does the same with a ferocity that will instantly capture your attention. Listen to any of those tunes (not to mention "Burning Bridges" or the urgently soulful "Porch Songs") and try not to instantly fall in love with Pureka's music. In fact, I dare you.
This is a story of Driving North.......2005-02-15
This album is beautiful. Pureka's melodies invoke wonder and awe at how someone as young as she is can be so talented and able to express emotion in such a raw, powerful way. Her voice is an amazing instrument.

There's no sacrilege intended in terming this spiritually minded collaboration a match made in heaven. Kate Campbell has won a loyal folk following with her purity of tone, literary inspirations, and depth of moral vision. Spooner Oldham has supplied soulful keyboards behind artists ranging from Percy Sledge and Aretha Franklin to Bob Dylan and Neil Young, and has further distinguished himself as songwriting partner of the great Dan Penn. This collection of hymns and contemporary material in a Christian vein benefits from the stripped-down intimacy and one-take immediacy of their performances as a duo. "If I Ever Get to Heaven," a Campbell-Oldham composition, speculates on the afterlife, but the most pointed material concerns the religion's radical message for life on earth, with Woody Guthrie's "Jesus Christ," Bobby Braddock's "Would They Love Him Down in Shreveport," and Kris Kristofferson's "They Killed Him" each suggesting that a second coming could result in another crucifixion. Whereas some of the more traditional-sounding material, such as the Irish "Be Thou My Vision" and "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy," stresses the comforts of religion, original material from Campbell--including "Dark Night of the Soul" and "Terrible Mercy"--explores the complexities. Whatever the message, Oldham's gospel piano and bedrock organ are worth hearing on their own. --Don McLeese

Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-07-14
Having just heard Kate Campbell sing live in Washington, DC, I ordered up four of her CDs, including her latest - "For the Living of These Days."
And I must say this newest offering is astounding in is beauty, depth, musicianship and complexity.
Campbell and Oldham (re)weave a thicket of old threads into lustrous tapestries of new strength and beauty...
Honestly, this is music which stands upon multiple thresholds:
Between tradition and innovation...
Between joy and pain...
Between questions and assurance...
Between Heaven and Earth.
Wherever you find yourself in your Christian walk of faith: Treat yourself to the comforting challenge of these words, this music!
The Simplicities and Complexities of Faith.......2007-03-09
Kate Campbell once again has delivered a product that her fans will love and newcomers to her sound will find intimate. Her unpretentious voice always catches me off guard. This album has some well-known hymns, some less-well-known songs about faith and some original work by Kate. As soon as you think the arrangements are ordinary, she changes it up a little, like she does in God of Grace and God of Glory. My favorite piece is her rendition of There Is A Balm In Gilead. Her un-hurried delivery gives this glorious song a soulful, knowing sound that truly is a balm to the listener's ears.
Kate is great!.......2006-12-31
I'm entranced by all of Kate Campbell
's cds. I hope that you'll sample all of them and love them as much as I do. She has a great voice - her writing matches her voice. I'm from Alabama originally - Kate really speaks to me.
You need something like this, but maybe not this.......2006-10-29
Nothing new here, but a lot of people would say, "Hey, there's not supposed to be anything new about God." These are traditional spirituals, samey, with that wheezy organ and fervent insistence on faith and humility. It's big on that most important feature of spiritual records -- Sincerity. It hits the other points on the genre's checklist with just a hint of Southern Baptist Grandma's country twang. It's pretty. Ms. Campbell's voice is nice and her timing is impeccable. A well-rounded CD collection includes this kind of music, and here it is
