Album Description
The three members of Young Widows emerged from the dissolution of Breather Resist with a new vision steeped in dark, brooding grooves and moody post-punk. From the reverb-drenched inspiration of Regulator Watts/Hoover to the bass and drums lock-groove perfected by Shellac and The Jesus Lizard, Young Widows gladly wear influences on their sleeve. The signature inventive guitar work is at its peak here, while the rhythm section lays down syrup-thick grooves, recalling The Melvins, Karp, and Nirvana as well as British post-punk a la Gang Of Four. Eleven songs of hypnotic, heavy, noise-rock anthems.

It's about time. If your a Jesus Lizard fan then thank these Young Widows for spilling your insides out. I'm curious to see if these guys can keep it up. It's flesh off the bone. Give a lick.

this is super aggressive, meaty, loud, pounding sonic annihilation based on heavy drumming heavily distorted bass, and chunky/and at times angular guitars. Reminds me of jesus lizard, shellac, and few other touch and go and dischord acts of the 90's. This is some serious stuff. brutal record of the year from a brand new band. Stand out's include tracks 1,2,5,7,8,9. this is serious.

This is my boy NUNO BETTENCOURT! Nuff Said!.......2004-09-21
Thank You for reading this post!
Now to the cd. This cd is great and is a must for any Extreme fan. This cd was abused, misused, & re-used. Could not take the cd out of player. Nuno is the Man! The entire album is really good with a kick ass intro to the first song "all Automatic" that really lets the listeners know right from the get go that this cd was gonna rock hard. The one thing I want to point out was that I really hated Nuno's solo album "Schizophonic" and that cd was horrible. This cd, and all his other works, are just all solid great works of musical genius and can not recommed them enough.
One thing like to point out about NUNO is that he is already worldly known as a great guitarist, but he is also much more than just that. What separates Mr. Bettencourt from a lot of other guitarist out there is the fact that he is also a great producer, songwriter and singer. Plus, just like his former Extreme band he is very versatile in his musical range. This guy is gonna be around for a long time.
The best songs on the album? Ask not which songs are the best.....ask which ones are not...Yes, it is that good with great rhythms and some long soloing..not to mention the demos are *gulp* awesome *gulp* yeah the demos of all things. Cheers Mate! Cheers!!
Love him or hate him..........2002-12-08
Love him or hate him, Nuno is a pure genius in the realm of song writing. If you are looking for the perfect songs, they are here. If you are the kind of person who has followed him since the early days of Extreme and are looking for the amazing guitar solos, they are here. If you are looking for songs with unbelievable melodies where you can just sit back and let the song itself take over...they are also here. If you are a musician you will find yourself constantly wondering how he came up with `that idea'. Nuno is truly one of the best song writers I've ever had the pleasure to learn from. (from the music). Don't spend your money on college if you want to play guitar and learn how to write music, just buy this CD. You will learn how to write, arrange, sing, solo and harmonize for one low price of this (and his other CD's). Not since The Beatles have I personally been so moved by a song writer. Do yourself a favor and get some Nuno!
WOW!.......2002-09-17
Where do you start with describing this album? Firstly it has one of the funniest intros ever which leads into the brilliant opening track ALL AUTOMATIC. Things slow down a bit for the excellent I JUST WANNA BE YOUR FRIEND and the very emotional OVER AND OUT before getting very funked up with a near 4 minute guitar solo in LOVE IS... Put simply if you like music in general you will like this. If not your loss on one of the last great albums of the 20th Century. Buy this and love it
Nuno does it again........2002-05-05
Nuno Bettencourt is not just an amazing guitar player but an outstanding songwriter as well. It's a shame that he can't shake off the Extreme connection, even years after he's left the band. This album is full of great chunky funk riffs, tight rhythms and most of all catchy sing-along vocals, much like his solo effort "Schizophonic". Expensive? Yes it is. But very worth it!!!
More than 5 - TEN Stars!.......2002-02-12
This is a FANTASTIC album! Only to (possibly) be out-done by Mourning Widows "Furnished Souls For Rent" album. Own it! It'll be a favorite for life!

This two-disc set completes Sequentia's ambitious project to record the complete musical works of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen to commemorate the 900th anniversary of her birth in 1098. In this last release, Sequentia finally takes on some of the most recognizable pieces from "A Feather on the Breath of God," the legendary recording by Gothic Voices that began the Hildegard boom 15 years ago. While you can't say that the older recording has been superseded, this one holds its own quite nicely. Where Gothic Voices took a no-nonsense approach to rhythm, making all notes more-or-less equal in length, Sequentia sings with its typical rhythmic freedom--without slipping into the rhapsodic excess that sometimes marred their earlier Hildegard discs; the momentum and shape of melody are always clear. Speaking of rhapsody, Sequentia's co-director Barbara Thornton opens the recording with a transporting rendition of a Hildegard hymn to "God the Father." --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
another essential Hildegard discs.......2002-02-20
My first introduction to Sequentia's versions of Hildegard was Canticles of Ecstacy, which still best defines musically, for me, the soaring visions and mysticism of Hildegard. Much of this sense is to be credited to the female voices of Sequentia, not only exceptional in quality but specifically not "sweet" or self-conscious or hovering toward modern, as in other ensembles (e.g., Gothic Voices or Anonymous 4). Beautiful as these latter voices are, one can take exception to the "angelic" label if one remembers that medievals saw angels as both terrifying and beatiful, and Sequentia evokes the awe and strength of angelic sounds like no one else (to my knowledge) recording Hildegard. Happily, the female voices in Saints are as soaring, challenging and beautiful as ever.
Though entirely correct historical scholarship, Saints has more male voices than female (separate, of course); the men's ensemble, called Sons of Thunder, is as strong and persuasive as any male performers of medieval vocal, and parallel the women's voices in removing any trace of self-consciousness. But while they are excellent, the male tones will be reminiscent of traditional Gregoran chant, of ecclesiastical music, not quite capturing the soaring mysticism of the female voices. Perhaps this is "built-in" to the two voices and their personalities. But I, for one, prefer the female voices, especially when Saints is meditative music for non-active listening.
Instrumental interludes, composed by a Sequentia member, are refreshingly authentic and quite welcome in the progress of the discs. They are carefully crafted to the sense of Hildegard's compositions and another reason why Sequentia's versions are unsurpassed.
Wonderful music to meditate by........1999-07-23
Mystical and etheral, this music has become my favorite during quiet meditation or contemplation. It seems to speak directly to that part of us which strives to transend the static of physical existence, and longs to know the infinite.

Great effort from a great guitarist.......2007-02-16
I have been a fan of Nuno's for many many years, even having met him once. He is truly a gifted and great person. I was sad when Extreme split, but it did allow Nuno to find himself. His work with Mourning Widows, Population 1 and Dramagods saw Nuno searching for a place to call his own. This CD is part of that exploration. His skill as a guitarist is unequaled, and I always admired his voice. I thought his voice was underused during his time with Extreme. Nuno has the fantastic ability to write very catchy tunes, with sweet harmonies layed on top. Nuno is one of those musicians that stand out. It's impossible to deny his talent. He was born to be a star if you will. In that way, it seems the demise of Extreme was inevitable; it's impossible to keep someone like Nuno in the confines of a group such as Extreme, no matter how good or bad you think they were. A course was plotted during his time in that band, and Nuno has engaged.
The best effort from Nuno's post "EXTREME" career........2005-11-01

Mourning Widows: Furnished Souls For Rent
Thank you very much for reading my post.
Wow where do I begin to tell you how good this album is? For starters it is my personal
opinion Nuno's best effort in his post "Extreme" career. Have not heard a good hard rock
album this good in a very long time. From Start to finish this one rocks all the way through.
Can not believe that when this came out that it did not become a great commercial success
especially when you take into consideration how horrible mainstream hard rock is these days.
Once again Nuno Bettencourt proves that he is not just one of the greatest guitarist of all
time, but that he is a real musican. A lot of great guitarist write great guitar riffs, but
not great lyrics on their solo and side project bands. Unlike other rocker guitarist Nuno
writes and composes songs from a musical stand point and not just a guitar head view. As far
as I am concerned "Furnished Souls For Rent" justifies that Nuno is arguably one of the most
complete guitarist in the world for he is a great singer, great song writer, great producer,
great musican, and a guitar God.
The songs found on here are just amazing. You have to have a hook in good hard rock music and
every song on here has a hook. Plus great, as always, lyrics that can be tongue at cheek at
times and serious at other times. When I first bought this cd about two years ago I could not
get enough of it and kept replaying it over and over. And it seemed that almost every time that
it was played something new was heard on each tune. This has to be one of the most underrated
Hard Rock albums of all-time. Plus the overall sound was very old school yet modern. You see in
most of todays records the music production has gotten too professional and too much computer
mumbo jumbo crap. It seems like everyone tries to make their music sound too perfect and take
out too many stuff and end result the music sounds too clean or too superficial. Nuno thankfully
has not fallen into this bad modern habit and especially on this album. Here is a hint to all
modern rockers "your music is not supposed to sound perfect" I mean listen to any classic bands
from 70's for proof.
The entire album is great with awesome hard rocking rhythms, great non commercial lyrics, thick
bass lines, decent drumming, great classic production, and plenty of guitars. By the way did I
tell you this album has great guitars? The lyrics make you think too.
I love every single song on here, but will only discuss four of them. My personal favorites are
the first 2 songs "Furnished Souls For Rent" which is maybe the best modern hard rock song you
never heard & "No Regrets" song number two. Both of these songs are just amazinly well written.
On the title cut "FSFR" the simple yet powerful main lyrics say it all: "She is heaven she's my
haven my escape! She goes all the way. She knows no glory tells a story with her face! Furnished
Souls For Rent." And NO this is not a power ballad either.
And on Song number two the best line is: "Don't obey the teacher tell her kids shut up! Mold you
into USELESS robots not allowed to feel. Quit your job tomorrow, quit your job today, take a
permanent vacation your dying everyday." Enough said!
The last two songs are also my favorites "War Paint" which is a classic great historically
referenced hard rocker and the opinions expressed are the truth as only Nuno could. The best
line on this song: "Put on your War paint cos here they come to claim your home & claim your
mother. Put on your war paint cos here they come to change your GOD & crush your own beliefs.
Put on your war paint cos here they come to spread the lies and leave you with disease!"
Is this not the best historical hard rock lyrics ever written? Ever?!
The last song "Angerexia" just totally rocks. It is a simplistic song but it is very powerfully
written about anger, hatred, and malice. I could really identify with this song because it just a
cool song to end a great record. This rocker shows that you can not always be happy or be good.
You have to have a balance of both Good & Evil that is just life. The lyrics say it all:
"You don't know why your angry! You don't know why your mad! It's a USELESS Revolution! Yeah!
Lazy RESOLUTION!"
I wish could desrcibe every song on this album but it would take a book to describe it all.
Like mentioned earlier there are not, in my personal opinion, any bad songs on here. This is
Nuno's best work, until proven otherwise, in his post "Extreme" career.
My advice to you if you do not already own this album is to:
GO BUY, BEG, BURROW, OR STEAL THIS ALBUM NOW!
COKE08

NUNO ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF... AGAIN.......2002-07-07
I've actually had this CD for a year or so but haven't got around to adding my two cents worth... What a great follow-up CD to Mourning Widows last venture. Nuno is the master of HARD ROCK/FUNK-FUSION. Ever since he left Extreme he has really reinvented himself finding his own unique style. Mourning Widows has an authentic and melodic sound that defies classification. Nuno's songwriting seems to get better with every album (as well as his singing), case in point "Upside Downside". This is the quintessential funk n roll song. If your a Nuno fan you will NOT be disappointed. If you have no idea who Nuno is, broaden your horizons! Pick up this CD and be prepared to get your groove on!!! -I had to drop a star for the poor import quality, it really lacks that crisp clean cutting-edge recording studio sound.
Out of 7 albums, The best of Bettencourt's work so far...........2002-05-23
From the first defiant pull offs of Play with me, to the cynical out-look at fashion of Hip Today, Extreme were may favourite band, with them out of the picture and various solo careers looking tediously un original i thought there Nuno would retire or give up or both.
But thank god he didn't....
He went on to form boston based trio Mourning Widows with Donovan, his cousin or something, and Jeff Consi,
"Furnished souls for rent" became the best rock album i had heard since everything had seemed to become written in a minor key.
Put down you Nickelback and Incubus Cd's and pick this up,
The clever lyrics leave you thinking about the song days after the last time you hear it.
The well though out solo's suit the song perfectly unlike some of Extreme's earlier work.
Don't go expecting aything even remotely extreme-ish because it isn't.
Not at all, it's catchy, loud, funky, and eveyrtime you listen to it it you seem to hear something new.
This is exactly what i want from a cd.
Even if you are doubtful reach for your credit card and buy this CD NOW!!!!!!!!
You won't regret it.
Who Is This?!?!.......2001-06-14
Is what I keep getting..... Being a longtime fan of all things extreme, I purchased a copy of this work, and have been playing it in a local music store. Everytime it is played, thats what I get. Who the heck is this?!?! These guys are very hip. There arrangements are cool, and their playing is Very COOL!! Thank God this recording is finally for sale in the U.S. Buff

One merry album........2006-06-19
I actually saw this band in Columbia Missouri, circa 1992. I can't remember anything about the show, but I remember liking their music. The first song from this disc "Black Halo", is easily one of the best tracks here, and the reason I bought this used just recently. Ah memories. Anyway, as much as that song nearly rocks, the next track is very simple. However I like it almost as much. Other stand-outs to me are "Solucinations", "Which Dreamed It?", and "Rejected". Maybe it's just the vocal, but this group reminds me some of Throwing Muses. Overall, a nice listen and I think their only album. Well worth the used price here.
Alice Spencer Shines.......2004-04-03
Great premiere for Alice Spencer. I agree that her next recording- "Great Dream" on Bjam Records was her best by far, but this is a good place to start.
TMW : a great start that ended too quickly........2004-03-30
Too bad that we have only this album to capture this short-lived band. Alice Spencer hints at the possibilies her voice possesses. Her next "for something completely different" collaboration- Bjam Records release "Great Dream" brings those possibilities to fruition. Get it!
Three Merry Widows -- amazing.......2004-02-23
If somehow Janis Joplin and Fairport Convention had all grown up in Saint Louis and gone psychedelic, they might have produced something like 'Which dreamed it.' But they didn't, and here is this incredible group, pretty much unknown outside of StL.
Imagine Edie Brickell and the new bohemians, and multiply X 4. Sprinkle a bit Irish music and a really great use of mandolin within a rock framework... nevermind, just get a copy and enjoy.
powerful vocals!.......2003-11-05
This is a great album, worthy of 5 stars, if not for the poor mixing and lack of engineering. TMW was a St. Louis band fronted by Alice Spencer, an amazing vocal talent. I would compare her voice to Janis Joplin's, but cleaner, more pure and more powerful. Sadly, this was their only release. Spencer's voice was a great match with this band and to date, her subsequent collaborations have yet to find as comfortable a home. After leaving TMW, Spencer switched gears and joined a folk/blues group The Geyer Street Sheiks. They have one album "Great Dream" (1994)on Bjam Records. Following the Sheiks, she went on to sing with The Barkers (~1999-2000?), and Victrola (kind of lounge/cabaret.) Several other ex-TMW members went on to form Tinhorn in 1996, and have two releases: "Adios-Exactly-Goodbye" and "Stereowide."

Product Description
Like a living, breathing Russ Meyers movie brought to life, Thee Merry Widows are a sight and sound to behold!
Combining elements of traditional psychobilly with their love of horrorpunk, surf, and garage, Thee Merry Widows are America's first all female psychobilly band. These girls may be pretty, but make no mistake, they ain't afriad to rock the f*** out!
Started by vocalist and burlesque queen Miss Eva von Slut and upright bassist Nikki Nightbreed in their San Francisco apartment, the band grew quickly to include sci-fi sweetheart drummer Andrea, garage rock rhythm guitar goddess Mistress Mandy, and lead guitarist/kindergarten teacher Nishone. The band has become a major force to be reckoned with in Northern California's psychobilly scene and have rocked shows with Demented Are Go, The Meteors, Guana Batz, Mad Sin, Nekromantix, The Coffin Nails, Hellbillys, and The Misfits to name a few.
Alcohol-soaked and rocking like the Runaways on speed, these gals are ready to rumble! Think you're man enough?
