4 out of 5 stars Sweet Charity: Sweet Memories.......2007-07-13

Listening to this Soundtrack brought back so many sweet memories of a fun time in my life - college. Hearing "Rhythm of Life" done by Sammy Davis Jr. was most memorable. This is such a fun soundtrack to play. I look forward to many years of enjoyment and recommend it to anyone who was in college in the late 60's.

4 out of 5 stars Sammy Davis Jr. is awesome.......2007-01-10

I have been converting my old LP's into CD's then putting them on my Ipod. I am picky about what I put on my Ipod, selecting only certain tracks from each CD. This CD, however, I put all tracks onto my Ipod except the overture. While I find Shirley MacLaine's voice a bit weak, the songs overcome any such problems with their energy. And one of the main reasons I wanted the movie rather than broadway CD was because of Sammy Davis Jr. His contributions to this album are worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Great Memories (better than current 2005 Broadway Revival).......2005-08-06

I saw the movie version for the first time a couple of years ago and continue with fond memories. I saw the 2005 Broadway Revival in June. Trust me, stick with the movie cast recording. Paula Kelly, Chita Rivera, and even Shirley MacLaine have a magic and zeal that is lost in the current revival. My main disappointment is that the movie soundtrack's version of The Rich Man's Frug is too short and doesn't have the best parts of the full number from the movie. That aside, who could ever top Sammy Davis' performance in Rythm of Life. Chita and Paula are beyond comparison in Something Better Than This.

This cast recording makes me wish I was old enough to have seen them during the original Broadway run.

Consider buying the DVD to the movie to accompany this DVD. That way, you'll also get to see Ben Vereen at his best. I will warn you that the movie was a bit indulgent with extended scenes whose length is not justified by their contribution to the overall film. It's about 20-30 minutes too long. But the musical and dance numbers are really great. Who doesn't love Fosse?

4 out of 5 stars long-overdue reissue of the classic soundtrack.......2003-10-09

SWEET CHARITY was turned into a not-so-successful film in 1969, starring Shirley MacLaine. Originally appearing on Broadway in 1966 starring Gwen Verdon, the musical is based on the classic Fellini film "Nights of Cabiria".

The score was heavily revised for the move to celluloid. "You Should See Yourself" was replaced by "My Personal Property", "I'm the Bravest Individual" was replaced by "It's a Nice Face". The melody for "Sweet Charity" was re-jigged for a more uptempo feel. Songs cut from the score altogether included "Baby Dream Your Dream", "Too Many Tomorrows" and "Charity's Soliloquy".

Shirley MacLaine was joined by a cast including veteran Broadway talents Paula Kelly and Chita Rivera, John McMartin (recreating the role he originated on Broadway opposite Gwen Verdon) as Oscar Linquist, Sammy Davis Jr. as Daddy Brubeck, Stubby Kaye as Herman and Ricardo Montalban.

Shirley MacLaine sings her numbers with her sweet pixie-esque voice, gliding through showstoppers like "I'm a Brass Band" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" with great ease.

Another fantastic package from Decca Broadway. Peter Filichia, as always, offers comprehensive liner notes, and sound quality is quite good. In addition to this CD I also recommend the still-superb 1966 original Broadway cast album with Gwen Verdon.

3 out of 5 stars Sweet Charity.......2003-09-14

I've been waiting for this version of Sweet Charity to come out for years. My parents use to listen to the Decca LP many years ago and the tunes grew on me. From hey Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, I'm A Brass Band, etc, etc Great music all around with not one bad track. Before this version I had brought the Broadway Show versions and to me they were all kind of flat. Maybe because I grew up on the film version I couldn't appreciate the show versions as much. The vocals and the scoring are great. Shirley MacClaine doesn't have the greatest voice in the world but she's still great.
My biggest complaint about this CD release is that it is not complete. You think that Decca Records would do a complete Cd release as previous musical soundtracks have done. This is a direct copy of the Lp released so many years ago. There is so much more music in this film that I was disapointed when I found it it was only a Cd of the original album. With Cd's fitting up the 80 minutes of music it is very surprising that this truncated version was released. Maybe because it's not considered a classic. This is am underrated film as far as I am concerned and in my opinion a far better score than Chicago (with all due respect to Bob Fosse who directed this film) This would be a great CD if only it wasn't abbreviated.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

    5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
    Bravo Rhino!

    5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

5 out of 5 stars Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

    5 out of 5 stars Time Capsule.......2006-11-30

The voices and instruments, like the songs, are straight from the mid-19th century. If you want to be transported back in time 150 years to a wonderful parlor performance of Foster's songs, this is the album to do it. The voices are marvelous and trained, and one must imagine that the strict phrasing and style are what one would have expected at the time. The cheap upright piano is perfect.

But the one perfect moment for me is the ONLY good extant rendition of "Was My Brother in the Battle?". Accompanied on a harmonium or pump reed organ, if this song doesn't tempt a tear, you simply aren't a romantic.

    Very highly recommended.

    3 out of 5 stars Unexpected.......2005-11-26

Quality of this recording is fantastic! Performances are superb! However, they don't fit being an example of Foster's music and times. I was expecting banjos and a Mississippi Sound - therfore, very, very disappointed in this CD and consider and a waste of money. Be sure to LISTEN to a few examples to match what you are looking for and what the CD offers. I, unfortunately did not listen before I bought. I rate this low only because my expectations were shattered. This IS a fine CD if opera styles are ok for an example of this southern, 1800's composer's work.

5 out of 5 stars An album to treasure.......2004-09-23

The landmark Library of Congress album, now on enhanced CD. Years
ago, I went on a six-months field assignment to a remote area of
Africa, where I could take only what music I could carry in a vest
pocket. I chose a tape player and two albums: a recital by Perlman
and this album on tape, and was content. If you love American
music, sung poetry, beautiful singing and deeply moving musicality,
this is an album you will treasure for a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars A classic recording of American songs.......2004-08-22

What can I say that hasn't already been said below? I only wanted to reiterate how wonderful this album is and assure the reader the sound is spectacular on CD. This is a live recording, and intentionally so, as the idea was to create a "parlor" experience as these were parlor songs to be sung by family and friends around the old upright piano. I especially liked the comment about the upright piano which, indeed, does croak and clank throughout the performance adding a note of "authenticity" without becoming obtrusive.

If only Ms. DeGaetani had graced my parlor...

5 out of 5 stars The sessions of sweet silent thought stirred.......2003-11-22

I have never heard such unadulterated extraworldy sound emanate from two human voices and what would otherwise be firewood (the period instruments played by Gilbert Kalish). It stirs profound patriotism and a deep sentimentality for our early days when a civilized people pined to find virtue by examining its own body-- the north and the south, the small town, the simple flag, and the beauty of gentile manly and womanly love expressed through equisite song. There is no other music I would rather hear 'when summoning up the remembrance of things past.' The ghost of the early American parlor will prick your skin through these simple hymns and you may escape for a moment our troubled and busy times.

5 out of 5 stars Tori? Sarah? Move Over.......2004-09-30

Talk about serendipity. I picked up this cd on a whim, and it has honestly turned out to be my best music purchase in the past year. Now I'm anxious to get my hands on the other five cds that I've heard she has out there and I'm ready to join the chorus of voices asking when Rachael Sage will get the radio love that she deserves.

Ballads and Burlesque manages to call to mind the work of talented musicians like Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, and Ani DiFranco, and yet in the end, what Sage has created here is entirely her own. She is more grounded than Sarah, more accessible than Tori, and more wistful than Ani--this is quite a coup, and it could end up being a very marketable one, if she finally gets heard airtime.

Simply put, there isn't a weak song on the cd. Even when she tackles the downside of relationships, as she often does here (the romantic dynamic, in "It's so Hard" and "Even Love Dies", the father-son dynamic in "Sacrifice") she manages to analyze and examine without seeming neurotic, and without wallowing...a lesson that other singer-songwriter types could stand to learn.
She can break your heart a little when she wants to, such as with the lost love described in "Jane's Dimitri", and yet manages to stay buoyant almost in spite of it all with her touch of humor in songs like "Leah" keeping her listener right there with her for the ride through relationships past.

From the sound of it, she's a believer in the "better to have loved and lost..." school of thought. And if you know what's good for you, you had better listen to her. It's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Better with each listen.......2004-09-23

Rachael has put out another good album. The songs here are mostly about love in its various forms: self-love, confidence, and acceptance (Sacrifice), unfulfilled/lost love (the heartbreaking Jane's Dimitri), the complications of new feelings (Leah), the difficulty (It's So Hard), the end (Even Love Dies).

Illusion's Carnival and Public Record both took a while for me to really love, but I think those albums had sonic experimentation that took me a little while to get used to, and they had songs that I immediately loved. Overall Ballads & Burlesque is a bit mellower than her previous work, and I miss some of the punch. I guess I wish there was a little more burlesque in the ballads and a little less ballad in the burlesque.

"Ferris Wheel" is a good case in point. The original, which appears on Public Record, is bright, almost bouncy, and one of my favorite songs on that album. Here it is transformed into a far moodier piece. The trumpets that I had grown to love so much since Illusion's Carnival only appear here on 2 songs.

Rachael's voice and piano are as wonderful as ever though, the arrangements as lush (especially Stephanie Winters' cello), and the trumpets shine when they do appear. The album gets better with each listen, as the songs reveal themselves. There's more energy than first appeared.

Long-time fans should definitely add this to their collection. However I must admit I don't think it's quite as good as her previous work (her previous work being of such consistent high quality, that's really less of a slight than it sounds) which is why I recommend newcomers start with something else, say Smashing the Serene or Illusion's Carnival. Then again, maybe this disc would be better appreciated if it's not being compared to her previous albums.

4 out of 5 stars There are gems here. One song has potential to hit big, if.........2004-09-17

Rachael Sage practically started out as an award-winning songwriter, and has since gotten even better. "Ballads & Burlesques" may well prove to be a breakthrough to a much larger audience. Her national reputation may have begun by winning the 2001 John Lennon and 2002 Billboard Songwriting Contests, or as an opening act for Ani DiFranco, but sometimes "mere" contest-winners really do have talent, really prove it with dues-paying live performances and most importantly get really good recordings made of their sound at its best.

If fairness had anything to do with music getting heard by a wide audience, Sage's music would naturally be in millions of homes. The music industry being what it is, though, they won't sell more good music to most of us until a lot of us tell them what's good. Still, there's a chance for musical justice. I have a fantasy scenario that may make the unlikely possible, in just a few "if only" steps: If only the makers of a memorable romantic comedy movie were searching for a great song to use for a 2 or 3-minute segment without dialogue -- imagine sequences in Meg Ryan movies for reference. If only they would hear Rachael Sage's "Why Not Love?" from "Ballads & Burlesque" and recognize how perfect it would be in their film and buy the rights. If only the music promotion machine would pick up on the buzz around the song from the hit movie and make it the Next Big Ballad.

"If only" that wasn't so difficult. Or is it? "Why Not Love?" is good enough to be worthy of the attention.

All we need now is for the right person / people to "discover" it.

If Sarah McLaughlin could have a huge album and bigger career via a similar scenario, Rachel Sage certainly has the goods to be similarly popular.

"Ballads and Burlesque" is an album of very good songs. But I'm taken with the idea that it contains that one breakthrough song to break through to mainstream appreciation.

    [revised 10-14-04]

    5 out of 5 stars Introducing...10 wonderful songs..........2004-08-30

Her sixth release to date, "Ballads & Burlesque" is her best album yet! From start to finish, this album will keep you wanting more. Her luscious piano arrangements are accentuated by her rich voice and beautiful lyrics. Highlights include "Jane's Dimitri," a heart-breaking song about a woman who realizes she's passed up her one chance at true love, "One True Thing," the catchy "It's So Hard," and the album's first AAA radio single, "Sacrifice," about a young man struggling to tell his father that he wants to stray away from his father's view of his future and become an artist. This album is highly recommended to long time fans of Rachael Sage, and welcome newcomers!

    4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars A great idea, but incomplete.......2000-10-26

Erich Kunzel plays the Bond themes? What a great idea! In addition, there are a few more selections in the same vein, like the cops-n-robbers TV medley, music from The Untouchables, Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.

Sometimes, you want to listen to the 007 music in instrumental only, and Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops do a good job with the arrangements. But where are the rest of the songs? Missing are three of my all-time favorites, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker. I think the album would be better with 'more Bond, less other.' We certainly don't need TWO selections from Dick Tracy. And the theme from Darkman is stylistically quite similar to Dick Tracy; nothing is gained by playing both. Don't get me wrong; I like Danny Elfman (check out his "Beetlejuice" theme on Kunzel's 'Great Fantasy Adventure Album'). I just wanted to hear all my fave Bond pieces on the one CD.

    Still, it's a keeper.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sheer beauty from Agnes Baltsa.......2005-06-23

This disc from Agnes Baltsa (Greek opera-singer) containing the most beautiful Greek songs is a real treat. It's recorded in the -80s when she was around 40 and in her prime. The songs are written by famous Greek composers like Theodorakis, Hadjidakis and Tsitsanis. My only complaint is that the cd only contains 11 songs. I wish it had at least 11 more.... But fortunately, my cd-player has a "repeat-button".......(Which I might add, is soon worn-out..)

For people unfamiliar with either Greek music or opera, this is the place to start. To me it seems that Greek music often is a matter of strong likes/dislikes, as is opera. You either love it or you hate it. After listening to this disc you will definitely want to seek out more recordings of Greek music and/or opera-recordings featuring Agnes Baltsa.

I know and love Agnes Baltsa from the opera stage, but even so, this record still amazes me. You will not hear her belt out painfully high notes like an opera-star on this cd - just beautiful singing throughout the whole disc. She also has a clear phrasing which I think is great, because it enables me to understand what the songs are all about. Being a classically trained singer one should perhaps think her voice unsuitable for simple-styled Greek folk songs. You couldn't be more wrong. Her crystal clear voice lends an elegancy to the songs that has to be heard to be believed. I'm a long time fan of Greek music and own a lot of recordings from various Greek artists, but never have I heard these songs so beautifully sung. This is definitely my "desert-island-recording" of Greek songs. I never tire of hearing them played again and again and again....

My favourite tracks from the disc have to be "Oniro pedion tis gitonias", "to treno fevgi stis okto", "O tahidromos" and "Arhontissa" and not to mention "Varkarolla". Her voice is just so hauntingly beautiful in these tracks. Don't be surprised if you end up in tears. But really, all the tracks are real treasures, gift-wrapped in Baltsa's velvet voice. It's a treat to hear Baltsa sing in her native tongue for the first time. It's obvious that she feels perfectly at ease here. She captures the melancholic beauty of the Greek soul so wonderfully. To me it's a mystery why she hasn't recorded more of this sort (at least I haven't been able to find any...)

The Athens Experimental Orchestra which is playing on this disc also deserves some words of praise. They make the Greek instruments sound heavenly and in the instrumental parts of the songs you just want to get up and dance.

This disc is really a proof of Greek supremacy - the music, the lyrics and Agnes Baltsa's singing - so simple and yet so powerful and breathtakingly beautiful. What more can I say? Just buy the cd ASAP!

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2004-12-10

This album was first released by Deutsche Grammophon (DG) in 1986 under the title "Agnes Baltsa, Songs My Country Taught Me." I have owned it and enjoyed it for probably 15 years. It's a wonderful collection of very melodious Greek folk songs with fine arrangements sung by one of the great mezzo sopranos of our time. It's great that DG has seen fit to re-release it so many of you can also enjoy it. Buy it; you won't regret it.
