Sassy's years on the Roulette label (1960-64) have been called the legendary singer's finest hour, a time when Vaughan's musicality merged exquisitely with her unbridled vocal ardor to achieve the sublime. Sarah Sings Soulfully, recorded at the close of that period, stands as a stunning testament to this claim--a divine collection of tracks that reveals an artist staking her soul on the rendering of each and every note, as well as the silences between them. Seductively spare, luxuriously poignant, and achingly honest all at the same time, Vaughan's vocals careen incandescently through the 12 standards presented here, swooping, sighing, and soaring with an intensity that remains unparalleled to this day. Listen to her reading of the "Just let our love take wing" line on the version of Monk's "'Round Midnight" found here: the fat, luscious drop of the word "just," the long fermata on "love," and the dip and swell that pulls the phrase forward on "take." It's a moment of revelation--and incredibly, only one among the many that shimmer throughout this collection. --Sylvia W. Chan

She is a queen.......2007-03-11
Sarah skillfully interprets its voice with an excellent support of organo. I create, without a doubt, one of its better discs.
STUNNING VOCAL MAGNIFICENCE~BRAVO SARAH!!!.......2005-05-18
Nobody could match the vocals from this peerless singer who is easily one of the greatest voices ever to grace the recording studio or concert stage and this great collection has the brilliant voice of Sarah Vaughan on display in all of its sublime soulful magnificence..."A Taste Of Honey" is the dark hauntingly brilliant opener of this great set and Sarah's beautifully fluid vocal is intoxicating and at its glorious peak giving chills when Sassy goes to the top of her stunning range at the ending! A moody and beautifully sung "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" is a different take on this classic that works while "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" is a totally engrossing stunner that is only matched by Diane Schuur's brilliant version that is her salute to the "Divine One" in her classic "Tribute" collection which is another Essential Collection for anyone who is a connoisseur of great female vocalists! In the early 70's I was fortunate to witness Sarah's return to performing in a small club in West Hollywood that was one of the most incredible performances I have ever experienced as The Divine One's voice grew greater and more rangy in her later years and although this album was some eight years earlier this wonderful set of jazzy songs is a grand example of a more mature and developed Sarah..."In Love In Vain" is romantic and gorgeous, the rhythmic "Gravy Waltz" is a delightful romp while "The Good Life" is lush and richly sung as only Sarah could sing them! A grand and elegant performance makes "Moanin'" a standout in a truly incredible program of performances that are full of them..."'Round Midnight" is hauntingly beautiful and a stirring and soulfully sung "Easy Street" is a blissful glorious vocal that is nothing less than magical. A hypnotic vocal that is enchanting make "Baby, Won't You Please Come Home" a wonderous listening experience while a deeply haunting "Midnight Sun" is an incredibly great closer for a totally magnificent collection of peerless vocal performances...Bravo Sarah and thank you for sharing your magical voice in concert and recordings for so many years that were sublime and are you ever missed!!!
W O W.......2004-05-01
This recording really packs a punch! Soulfully is an understatement - but how else could you describe this recording? The phrasing, pauses, and drawn out notes, all coalesce with the beautiful musical arrangements - standing the listeners every hair on end.
Listening to this creates a numbing bliss! As soulful as soul stirring, this is one of Sarah's best recordings I've listened to!
"The Divine One"'s Powerhouse Soul!.......2001-07-22
Although I am only in my early twenties, Sarah Vaughan was my introduction to jazz almost ten years ago. I own about twenty of her albums and I do believe that "Sarah Sings Soulfully" is an essential recording for any true fan of Sassy's to own. Recorded in 1963, it captured Sassy's glorious voice in top shape. The originality here is that this is not exactly a jazz album; there is bass, trumpet, tenor sax, guitar and drums but the acoustic piano is replaced by an organ played to perfection by Ernie Freeman. The result is absolutely breathtaking. Sassy here not only showcases very precise interpretative skills but also her brilliant musicianship on every track; more importantly, Sarah's impeccable vocal technique never outweighs the language of the soul. See for yourself by listening to "What Kind of A Fool Am I?," "In Love In Vain," Monk's classic tune "'Round Midnight", and one of the most magnificent renditions of "Midnight Sun" I have ever heard. The Jazziest number on this album has to be "Moanin'" as its instrumentation very much recalls the "big-band" style. I guess this record owes its title to the variety of moods that Sarah explores here. She swiftly alternates between melancholy and foolish, exhilirating joy ("Sermonette," "Gravy Waltz") and always, she remains engaging and believable. Another reason to buy this album--especially if you're in need of an intro to Sarah--is that it provides you with an opportunity to really appreciate her legendary, wide range vocal range, from her unmistakable vibrato to her astonishing falsetto. Pay close attention to Sassy's vocal prowesses as she closes "A Taste of Honey" and "In Love In Vain" and you might just understand why many critics thought that many an opera singer envied that voice! Go get this album and recommend it to your friends; it's pure gold from start to finish.
Sublime Sarah Breaks Your Heart.......2000-12-22
Sarah Vaughan was often not given enough credit in the shaping and emotional impact of her performances on record. Always overshadowed by the ghost of Billie Holiday's emotional interpretations and Ella Fitzgerald's sense of swing, Sarah was often relegated to third in line in the world of female jazz divas. Unfortunately this record has not received the attention it deserves. Sarah's interpreations and performance on this set leaves no emotional door unopened, she simply breaks your heart with her subtle yet effective interpretation. Rarely has Sassy sounded so emotionally honest, not overpowering the material here. By this time, Sarah was listening to her critics and pulling back to let the lyrics and melody shine instead of calling undue attention to the power of her majestic voice. It is very evident Sassy was watching herself here, and just lets the music itself and her wonderful instrument to guide the listener thru the twists and turns of a heartbroken journey. Strongly recommended.

SOUND OF LIGHT-STEVEN CRAVIS.......2007-05-13
Delightful melodies, charming and catchy. You'll be humming them over and over again in your head. This album makes me smile. It is childlike in its simplicity yet clever twists and turns keep your from being bored. The listener feels like they are gently gliding in the air over hills and dales as the melodies rise and fall. As a pianist, his technique is good but rather straight forward - could feel more sensitive but a wonderful addition to any instrumental collection. Highly recommend!
Beautiful Solo Piano Album.......2004-10-26
Steven Cravis's "Sound of Light" is a sonic delight in which he interprets beautiful colors and shades of light as music in sparkling brilliance for the pleasure of our ears and the exuberance of our spirit. Splashes of "color" resonate on the first track of the album "Through the Kaleidoscope" setting the scene for the broad spectrum of shades and shadows on the rest of this collection of pieces. Each one evokes a distinct mood, some grey and moody like the third track "Dancing Spirits" and some soft as romantic candlelight such as my favorite track on the album, "The Shining Star". "Radiant Love" shines with the warmth of a heart filled with true devotion and opens into an interesting bridge that sounds almost classical. "Snowfall Sunrise" shines with the hope of a fresh new day washed in the crystal pure reflections of white snow. I highly recommend this album. (By Laura Sullivan, Recording Artist)

Album Description
Ina May Wool's debut CD, "Moon Over 97th Street," includes 11 songs with vocals and full production and one instrumental reprise. Here's how critics are describing it:
"a debut of such focused intimacy that it will stun listeners well into the coming millennium. MITCH RITTER, DIRTY LINEN, June/July 99.
"Produced with a full band, this is the kind of album that is indistinguishable from the hits of lucky folks like Sheryl Crow, whose only distinction is to have a few hundred thousand in promotional bucks behind them. This is a fine album from an artist who deserves to be noticed." Ed McKeon, Herald, New Britain, CT.
"A crystal-clear voice and worldly storytelling abilities. One of the most complete and enjoyable releases I've reviewed in a while, 'Moon' is well-crafted folk mixed neatly with strong pop sensibilities." Lisa Fairbanks, Rhythm and News.
Wools writing and delivery immediately stand out for their combination of finely honed quality and assured stylistic range, encompassing elements of folk, rock, blues, country, jazz and soul. SUE WILSON, The Scotsman, Scotlands national newspaper, Edinburgh, Scotland
"Juxtaposing the sophisticated balladry of the title track with the Cajunish stomp of J'ai Gagne, a celebration of a friend 'winning' a divorce, it covers a wide range of styles which Wool's voice unites with big-time assurance." ROB ADAMS, The Herald, Glasgow, Scotland.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2003-11-30
A blind purchase based on a few sound clips and enthusiastic customer reviews (are there any other kind here?) is always risky, and this one was a mixed blessing. Ina May Wool is a talented songwriter, literate both musically and emotionally, and an expressive singer whose full potential surely hasn't been realized here except in a few songs.
Ms. Wool is at her best when singing about the ups and downs of long-term relationships. "J'ai Gagné (I Won)", "January Thaw", and "Leopard" stand out, though only the first does so musically as well as lyrically. "Elephant Learning to Dance" and "Devil You Don't" are also fine relationship songs, though the latter is cutesy with its wordplay. The other material here is less successful, and the final instrumental track with its crackling-record sound seems out of place on a CD that is produced to perfection. "Janis" is just embarrassing. I cringed at the misuse of beatnik slang to evoke the late 60's, at the precious lyrics, at the strained connection between one of Joplin's lesser songs and her persona, and at what was for me a disconnect between the light silly tone of the song and its sad subject matter. Country Joe McDonald's "Janis" remains the song that moves me, though Ms. Wool is a better singer and lyricist in general.
I disregarded what I read about this CD having been produced by a Broadway musician, but as someone who wouldn't be caught dead with the soundtrack from a Broadway show (not that there's anything wrong with that!), I was a bit put off by tracks that sounded show tune-ish. Don't be misled by the downloads or the notice that people who like Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Kathleen Edwards, Tift Merritt, the Be Good Tanyas, and Rosanne Cash bought this CD. I'm a fan of all those singers/songwriters, but Ina May Wool is certainly not alt-country. Perhaps alt-Broadway at times. I could imagine her benefitting from more exposure to those alt-country songwriters if she could stand it, though. Perhaps a sabbatical hanging out with them, or with a Guy Clark or Don Schlitz who's learned over the decades to craft songs perfectly and to use words sparingly. I think there are mediocre and good songs here that could have been masterpieces if they'd been treated as rough drafts and perfected over the years, bounced off lots of other songwriters and audiences before being recorded. Or perhaps they were, to great acclaim, and my tastes just aren't broad enough to encompass what others here seem to find a brilliant body of work.
Overall, I agree with the one negative review below (not with its rather savage tone) that while there are great moments here, the quality of the songs is inconsistent, and that a purchase based solely on what can be downloaded here might lead to disappointment, unlike a purchase based on those who go to hear Ina May Wool sing all her material in person. She may well be a consistently great performer, but if so it isn't captured on this often-bland CD. She is obviously capable of being an exceptional lyricist as well as vocalist, and perhaps future efforts will be more consistent. If not, having written and performed the brilliant and exuberant "J'ai Gagné" is a greater accomplishment than most could hope for.
Beautifully written.......2003-01-28
These urban songs of romance and friendship have the most wonderful lyrics. I hope you don't mind if I quote some, so you can get an idea. Ina May Wool's songwriting is remarkably perceptive about the ways of the heart. Consider this:
"Over down in Froze Town, where the ice is real thin
Right move in the wrong direction and the best ones fall in."
(Don't Wanna Wait)
Her writing is notable for its economy and power; a word is worth a thousand pictures.
"Day-old coffee in a cup, and the heat comes clanging up."
(January Thaw)
She has her own special way of looking at the world, which involves a generous helping of whimsey.
"I can be broad as Third Avenue ... I can be small as a molecule." (Elephant Learning to Dance)
The title song for this album, a sleek cabaret number, includes a list of the qualities one might look for in a man; it always makes me smile.
Ina May's themes can be dark, but her outlook is anything but. When she sings about lovers' quarrels (Leopard, January Thaw) it is the glorious making up afterward that interests her. A song about divorce (J'ai gagne) celebrates one woman's ability to transcend. The only truly ticked-off song here (The Devil You Don't) becomes a tour de force of wordplay and imagery. Don't get mad, get eloquent.
The words sound good together too, and the rhymes are tasty.
Combine these excellent lyrics with a variety of interesting melodies, with the artist's sweet, smoky voice, and her engaging performance--the result is something you just have to hear.
Remarkable range and resonance.......2002-06-24
Ina May Wool's "Moon Over 97th Street" gets your attention and holds you there. Her richly crafted songs are intensely personal yet accessible, with superbly textured musical arrangements by partner Dan Weiss. A work of remarkable range and resonance -- musically, lyrically, authentically. A treat for fans of folk, rock, life.
Not To Be Missed.......2002-06-17
On "Moon Over 97th Street," Ina May Wool takes us on an extraordinary tour of ordinary things. The songs unfold so naturally that one may not notice at first how fresh and surprising her melodies are. Dan Weiss's expert production supports the songs perfectly , providing a comfortable seat for listening to Wool's voice. A beautiful marriage of melody and insight, and it rocks too!
I HIGHLY Recommend...........2002-06-17
When you're up for listening to honest, pure, real-live music, this is the CD for you. I've had the good fortune of seeing Ina May Wool perform in New York City quite a few times, and this extremely well-produced CD captures the sincerity and openness of her live shows. Her deeply layered lyrics are meant to hear again and again... and I discover something new in them every time. Ina May has the ability to really draw you into her music...

Product Description
"Buffalo Tales" tells a story - from the beginning to the end - songs about truth, seasons, relationships, love, open spaces, and slower times. To listen closely to Bunny's own Lakota-inflective Folk genre you may hear the sound of a soaring heart, a growing tree, or the wind dancing around it. "O Great Spirit" an ancient Lakota prayer put to music circles the end of this album full of earth honoring sounds punctuated by Lakota "love" flute made by an elder still living on the Pine Ridge reservation. Here are the sounds of Mother Earth to bring you back to nature and the HEART of the Black Hills where Bunny lives as the wide open sage covered prairies still live with buffalo, and in song she creates a place you will want to return again and again in music that resonates from this sacred land. A truly original sound - Buffalo Tales showcases Bunny's beautifully recognizable voice and acoustic live performance style. To the indiginous Lakota (Sioux) the buffalo represented abundant peace and harmony in all aspects of life - their whole world. Yet their dreams and prophecys foretold a time of world trouble would come before true "buffalo" abundance would again cover the earth.

Album Description
Unlike traditional circus music, which supports the acts, these high-flying feats of musical daring are performed by the musicians. On violin, saxophone, trombone, bassoon, banjo, accordion, bass, drums and percussion, PT'sCBE rages through familiar tunes, but with odd time signatures, unusual instrumentation, wild improvisations and audience participation.
Whether it's the drag-racing version of Ellington's Caravan, the most soulful version of Hank Williams' I'm So Lonesome that will truly bring tears to your eyes, or a down-home juke joint version of Hendrix's Gypsy Eyes PT'sCBE runs the gamut from the Dark to the Comical, the Bashing to the Sublime.
