The Apostle [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Robert Duvall's triple-threat (producer/writer/director) 1997 film about a fundamentalist Texas preacher whose fiery spirituality and good works are nearly unraveled by his decidedly human lusts is remarkable for a number of things--the star's non-judgmental approach to Christianity undercuts easy stereotyping and his choice in music nicely smudges the modern, artificially drawn boundaries between country and gospel. It's a collection of music that shows what rich diversity there is in music that's been largely marginalized by mainstream marketeers. Highlights include Lyle Lovett's rousing "I'm a Soldier In the Army of the Lord," "In the Garden" by Johnny Cash, and The Carter Family returning to their roots on "Waitin' On the Far Bank of Jordan". --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

The CD itself is very annointed. I had to purchase copies for some of my brothers and sisters in Christ. The seller also shipped my order in record time with no delays. I hope to do further business with this organization.

Sometimes you're in a Stereolab mood, sometimes a Latin Playboys mood, sometimes a Sea and Cake mood. And sometimes you're just the genius that hops fluidly between each disparate sound, making them all continuous--singing a Lorca poem in Spanish, playing in a haze of organ and guitar and fuzzy rhythms. That's Apostle of Hustle for you, the ensemble led by Andrew Whiteman, better known as Broken Social Scene's guitarist. Like BSS, Apostle is a giant mix-up, with spacey interludes of guitar, shuffling drums, and piano right next to a laconic vocal, a voice that gets shoved into choruses by suddenly driving guitars. The highlights on National Anthem are the rockers, "Justine, Beckoning" and the title track, both frontloaded with a wall of guitar that's infused with keys and horns as the vocals peek from behind an artful gauze. This is a visionary album, easy to consume repeatedly. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
National Anthem of Nowhere is Apostle of Hustle's follow-up to their debut album of 2004, Folkloric Feel. On the track, "My Sword Hand's Anger," Andrew Whiteman (also the lead guitarist of Broken Social Scene) "sings that he's `looking for a new technique,' but weighing this track from Apostle of Hustle's second album against material on their debut, it sounds as if he's already found it." - 4 STARS, Pitchfork Media.
On this album, everyone who feels they have no voice or can't be heard, they are suddenly united. They hear the title and something stirs inside them. Then they hear the song and they feel that they "know" it. They meet strangers in nowhere places and will never forget those meetings. They wander out into the suburban, in-between zones and there are welcomed.

Customer Reviews:
"Praise the Lord and Pass the Plate!".......2003-11-24
I have yet to see the movie in its entirety but after hearing Lyle Lovett over the closing credits, I had to buy the CD. Lovett's "I'm a Soldier in the Army of the Lord" is a foot-stomping, hand-clapping, good old-fashioned Sunday-go-to-meeting jam that works!
The album is filled with traditional Southern gospel, interpreted by artists that truly understand the power of music to express one's faith.
Other highlight's include the familiar "Softly and Tenderly" (Rebecca Lynn Howard), a spiritually evocative "In the Garden" by Johnny Cash, Lori White's "There is Power in the Blood", Sounds of Blackness' soulfully a cappella version of "Victory of Mine", the funeral favorite "I'll Fly Away", done by Gary Chapman and Wynonna.
Star Robert Duvall shows his vocal talents, along with Emmylou Harris, on the harmonically satisfying "I Love to Tell the Story".
It's music like this that makes one long for the "little church by the side of the road".
A Rare Gem.......2002-01-27
It is a rare thing to find gospel music treated with the reverence it dserves in today's cynical entertainment, but this CD puls it off. I'm from the South and can appreciate the country twangs that pervade nearly all these old standards.
If you've ever wondered what a Sunday morning revival in the South sounds like, this is it. Beautiful.
Loved the movie, too........2000-05-04
This is a great CD. Listened again today after not hearing it for a few months. The Far Side of the Jordan was sung at my Mother's funeral. Very powerful and moving. Still can't hear it without crying. Highly recommended!
Great!.......2000-04-04
This is a pretty good recording. My favorite song is I Will Not Go Quietly by Steven Curtis Chapman. This guy is Awesome! Not many people can write such powerful songs the way he does.
These songs are not from the movie.......1998-11-05
I felt a bit suckered after buying this album. I loved the movie, and was moved by the music (and I'm not a religious guy). But these aren't the hard-core gospel songs in the flick. Instead they're more professional covers done by bigger names. As a result, they lack a lot of the heart of soul of the songs in the movie. I guess my problem is I can't find the "old-school" gospel that was featured in the movie. It's such a shame that a movie that was so un-traditional (in a movie sense) didn't have the cajones to release the songs that were actually in the film.

For fans of Broken Social Scene and beyond.......2007-02-12
In spite of the constant references made about this album as being Latin-tinged, I find it more of a "must listen to" reference for fans of folk and alternative, in general, and Broken Social Scene (BSS), more specifically. Andrew Whiteman, lead guitar for BSS, heads up this project and blends his insanely creative guitar work with the most gorgeous vocal harmonies and percussion to yield song after song that make "Folkloric Feel" an album to love and play on repeat over and over.
This Is a beautiful album !!.......2005-03-05
The more I listen to It, the more I like It.
If you like dreamy, mellow lo-fi music, buy this one !
Not as good as broken social scene, but still good.......2004-09-21
A great release from one of the lead guitarists of Broken Social Scene. An atmospheric and dreamy, while also upbeat and engaging album that has a tendency to put a spell on me. I'll start listening to the CD, and then I'll get put into this trance where I completely lose track of time. Next thing I know the CD is over.
The album starts off with the repetition of the bluesy riff on "folkloric feel" that will start to draw you in. After the magical "baby your in luck" you'll be hooked. By the time you hear the hypnotizing "they shoot horses don't they" you will be completely be emersed in the Folkloric Feel.
So why only four stars. Well, a couple of songs, such as "kings and queens",although great songs, tend to drag on a little too long and become kind of boring.
Although there may be a lack of consistency, the album creates an amazing world of sound in your head that will pluck you from the worries of the everyday world, and make you feel ok (at least for an hour).

Album Description
A wonder-filled new resource, Redeemer of the Nations, Come explores the treasury of the Church's Advent music and Scripture. Chant, carols, and choral anthems are woven into a prayerful service reminiscent of traditional Christmas Lessons and Carols services. Each year during the season of Advent, the Church celebrates three "comings" of Christ. The first is his coming in history. This coming, of Jesus born of the Virgin Mary, we remember. The second is his coming in mystery - in the members of the asembly, in Word and Sacrament. This coming we participate in, each day of our lives. The last is his coming in majesty - at the end of time, when Christ comes in glory to judge the living and the dead. While we look for this coming at all times, we anticipate it with intensity during Advent. The many-faceted jewel that is the season of Advent deserves to be seen from different angles. Advent is a wonderful time to try something different, something that will invite regular churchgoers and newcomers alike to a deeper relationship with the God who loves humanity enough to become one of us. The Lessons and Crols format is a flexible and splendid opportunity for people to hear the Word of God - and to respond to it with glorious song.
