Wayne Watson

Editorial Reviews

Wayne Watson has had a trying year. In sight of writing a follow-up to his greatly admired project The Way Home, a freak accident left him broken, sick, and fatigued. For months he could hardly muster the energy for daily living, let alone a creative endeavor. Through this time Watson began to consider the possibility of his musical career coming to an end. But then some heaven-sent encouragement helped him believe again that God was indeed using him. His song "For Such a Time as This" was used on an episode of TV's Touched by an Angel, and he was invited to perform a private worship service for the survivors of the Columbine High School shooting. Through these events, and a little inspiration gleaned at a James Taylor concert, Watson began to write again. In 10 weeks he penned the 11 songs that make up this self-titled release, his 16th album. Reflecting on his life events over the past year, Watson has turned his pain, emotions, and questions into songs that his listeners can identify with. And breaking from his usual style, he has written these songs with both piano and guitar, making this project more lush and textured than his previous material. --Israel Button

5 out of 5 stars Let freedom ring!.......2003-08-31

I have been a fan of Wayne Watson's ever since his 1987 breakthrough hit "Watercolour Ponies" (if you have never heard this song and you are a parent, you need to hear it). But as popular as that song was, most Wayne Watson fans will tell you that his best album ever was the 1990 release "Home Free."

The title track from this album was written out of the pain Wayne felt from the soon to be death of a close friend of his, Sandra Kirkham. Although everyone around her was praying for her complete recovery, God opted to call her home. The song "Home Free" deals with the conflict that is inherent in all of us: allowing God's will to be done even when it hurts.

A good companion to the title song is "When God's People Pray," a reminder of what all can happen when God answers our prayers.

There are many, many more songs on this album that should be taken to heart. And each one will move your heart towards God if you will let it.

This album is a must have for not only Wayne Watson fans, but soon-to-be Wayne Watson fans.

5 out of 5 stars Help for the Living who are Hurting.......2003-07-01

In response to the first review I read, I first heard this song when my then 3 year old brother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. My mother played it over and over making it her prayer that God's will be done - in life and in death. It was a unique source of hope and strength that God was there, with us, in the midst of everything - no matter what.

My brother just turned 15 in 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Brings Peace to Those Dying and Those Living.......2001-07-27

My sister was dying from a brain tumor and we were returning from a fishing trip, that we knew would be her last. When she heard Wayne Watson's song Home Free she let us know that she wanted to hear it again and again. It made her feel better for herself and for us. She asked us to have someone sing it at her funeral. There is no better song to help heal the greiving. My family listens to it often and I always give this CD to anyone I know who is dealing with the pain of losing someone to an illness. We love the WHOLE album.

I had the WONDERFUL opportunity to hear Wayne perform "Home Free" for the first time in public. It was when his friend was still in alive. (That he had wrote this song about.) (Just after that concert, he had found out she was near the end, or had passed away... I don't remember which.) After I heard that, it just made that night even more memorable! If you're not sure which Wayne Watson cd to start with, this would be the one! (Thought I like all of them!) Enjoy and God Bless! P.S. If you'd like to hear about another memorable evening I had "with" Wayne Watson, feel free to email me! (I had the priveledge of interviewing him! ) :-}

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music and great lyrics!.......2000-12-07

Fantastic CD! It is a premier example of Wayne Watson's wonderful talent not only as a singer, but also as a song writer. The lyrics are great and Wayne's story telling voice makes them easy to follow. As Wayne Watson reflects upon the CD, he states, "God has been faithful to use a few simple thoughts and songs to comfort, convict, and encourage people."

5 out of 5 stars The Best of All Time.......2000-03-12

This may very well be the best Contemporary Christian CD there is. On it is Wayne's music of the 80's, plus another song released with this album. You can't go wrong with any of Wayne's stuff, but in my view, no one can call him or herself a true collector of Christian music without this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome effort from a talented musician..........2005-09-02

I don't know much about Wayne's career. I don't know his achievements, his accolades, or his story. But I do know that when I picked up this album, it became a part of me. The truth and wisdom became a part of my muscle fiber. The title track suggests that though everything is not perfect and that we may sometimes have regrets, we must continute to look ahead to see that sometimes a "rough and rocky road can take us to a beautiful place." A Season In Your Path is about the loss of connection between old friends and instantly brought pain to my heart and tears to my eyes. It's the story of a friendship, that over a period of time, drifted apart, and the singer's longing for and appreciation of that friendship. Say What You Say is a great song about motivations, and being conscious of every word and action, realizing that is has an impact on others. God In A Box is an awesome song that reminds us that God cannot be pigeon-holed. He is an omnipresent force to be reconed with. He won't be contained in a label or box. He supercedes that. It is humbling to realize that truth and at the same time, glorious to know that He is above anything we can imagine. Over all this record will take you through the gamut of emotions from joyful to tearful, happy to repentant; a quality that any good Contemporary Christian album should exhibit.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Waynes best work.......2002-09-26

Wayne is a master musician. His powerful voice and acoustic sound make for very moving music. The title song "A Beautiful Place" encourages fortitude in the knowledge that a "More Beautiful Place" is not too far off. It truly is an incredible and beatiful song from a gifted musician.

This is one of those rare compact discs in which the listener's finger will not get much exercise from pressing the Fast Forward button. Wayne Watson's career didn't begin with "Field of Souls", "Beautiful Place", or any of his songs from even the last 15 years. No, go back even farther. Go back to a time before there were giants in the land, before water-colored ponies could be seen on refrigerator doors, and before such times as these.

A Christian music enthusiast can do well by buying old greatest hits CDs even if the song titles aren't all that familiar. Because that's when you hear that song that you haven't heard in 15 or 20 years, the one that you loved so much when you first started listening to Christian music. Well, for me, this was one of those CDs. Some of the songs that were so familiar to me include:

"The Sacrifice":
Offer up the sacrifice
Creation set forth the call
One Holy sacrifice
One life to pay for the fall

"Love Found a Way":

Love found a way
And our hearts can hold
The price Love chose to pay
All hope was gone
Till Easter dawn
We are free because
Love found a way

"People of God":
We're the people of God
Called by His name
Called from the dark
And delivered from shame

"One Day":
One day Jesus will call my name
As days go by I hope I don't stay the same
I want to get so close to Him
That it's no big change
On that day that Jesus calls my name

Also on this album is the original version of "Touch of the Master's Hand". If you don't recall, that's the classic about the dusty, old violin and the auction. I think this version is far better than the re-recorded version found on the CD "How Time Flies". Don't get me wrong: that one's good, but this one's better. "Touch of the Master's Hand" is one of those songs you can listen to when you're feeling down, and it's a guarantee to bring you back up again.

But my favorite song on here is "New Lives For Old", which is a story song about a sad, old man who used to run a carnival until something happened that caused him to shut it down. Now, he stands on the old street corner where he used to sell tickets for his show, and he shouts out to the people that pass by...

New lives for old
Warm hearts for cold
Have I got a deal for you today
C'mon, step right this way
Get you new lives for old

...and the song ends with a both sad and wonderful conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars More Tha A Little Unusual.......2003-12-13

I have listened to Wayne seriously since 1986. Musical interests for me in the past have included everything from Iggy Popp to Sex Pistols to Tangerine Dream. I've always been stirred by Waynes voice and lyrical content, but have not been sure if he was just synthesized as far as background sound. I have been a sound man for several bands, and am pretty critical as to sound and talent. I recently saw Wayne perform live with no accompanying musicians, and was astounded. He blew away 98% of the rock musicians I've seen for talent. In fact, I'd put him in the category of people like Rory Gallagher, and Roy Buchanan for sheer talent. This guy can write, sing and play several instruments like a virtuoso. Oh yes he has many good cd's, this one included. I personally am found of his release from the year 2000, with the tune, "More Than A Little Unusual".

5 out of 5 stars Field of Souls - An Essay on Grace.......2003-05-28

I was self-lured into buying this album when I saw the song list and "Class of '95" caught my eye. I too am a member of the Class of '95 (PhD, USF). Little did I know what was in store for me when I innocently picked up this CD.

"Class of 95" led the assault...reminding me of the past and present that He had brought me through since I'd started college in the mid-80s, then grad school. Wow, it's been a long journey, and He's been there every step of the way.

"Rock Steady", "One Time in Each Forever", remind me of what grace is about (God's mercy, and His unmerited favor towards us), and what it's NOT about (such as my feelings about life or about myself). The title cut reminds us that He uses us in different ways, different places, different times of His choosing, not of our own.

Then come the heavy guns... "If I were You" and "Don't You Remember" remind me of how different God views us and our sin, as compared to how WE view them. If it were not for that difference, we would all be without hope, without eternity. That difference is what God's grace is all about. "Every Waking Moment" is an example of a person who has come to understand that difference, and what it is about. ("...and my attempts at perfection are weak/I am lost, but for Your grace.")

The final blow: "Blessed Are". For me, it was almost as though Jesus Himself were speaking through this song...so far through these songs, I have seen traits that I should NOT have if I am trying to show the same grace to others as God would have us show ...now, let's sit down and look at some of the traits I SHOULD have... "Blessed Are" is a lyrically and musically beautiful "embellishment" of Jesus' own beatitudes (see Matthew 5). Guaranteed flood-gate opener for me. It has become my own "anthem" to grace.

Please - if you want to learn what God's grace is all about...buy this album!

Wayne Watson's "The Class Of '95" is so good! I'm a 1995 graduate at West Mesquite High School from Mesquite, TX! This song is dedicated for the graduates all over the country who graduated that year and have remembered the past and go start a great job in the future! CLASS OF '95 RULZ BABY!

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Watson is Awesome.......2002-01-30

I recently purchased this album and I highly recommend it to you. As a Christian I am always looking for a hip sound that's fun to sing with, but most importantly speaks to my heart and helps me to worship. Field Of Souls has it all! Wayne Watson is similar to Stephen Curtis Chapman in sound but with a different but equally good style of song.

1 out of 5 stars "Field of Souls" is a weak effort by Wayne Watson........1999-05-25

Recently, I had the great misfortune of hearing Wayne Watson's "Field of Souls". I guess I would describe his style as religious syntha-crap. Watson has provided American listeners with one of the corniest sounding collages of computer generated unpleasantness that I have heard to this day. Watson has the artistic integrity of N' Sync on crack, and the talent to match.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Awe-Inspiring.......2007-01-16

This classic 1986 recording by gospel diva Cynthia Clawson still remains one of her finest efforts. Always an incredible live- concert-performer, this c.d. captures Cynthia's amazing resonance and incredible range on some truly wonderful song selections. Among the highlights are:
-My Faith Has Found A Resting Place/Immortal Invisible- The project begins with an a cappella rendering of the tender hymn "My Faith Has Found A Resting Place" (Clawson is very well known for her EXTRAORDINARY a cappella singing...her live performances are truly "sonic" experiences as she is one of those rare vocalists who can fill every corner of a church or concert hall with her vast and amazing voice). There is an immediate segue from this hymn (via a wonderful woodwind introduction) into a truly amazing arrangement of the classic church hymn "Immortal Invisible". If your memories of this hymn are somewhat stodgy and dry, you'll be delighted. An amazing new melodic "verse" and lyrics were added to the original hymn "chorus". This title track is one of Clawson's most breathtaking and original performances.
-Let Me Get Lost- Clawson could easily have become a true jazz vocalist and this track certainly exhibits her amazing versatility of genres. Her vocal range has always been legendary and no-where on the album is this more evident than here.
-Hot Fire- a more-than-decent song, this track is worthwhile mostly because of the sheer power of her vocals. Normally Clawson is known for her delicately-nuanced performances. Here, the listener is given the opportunity of hearing her "full-throttle"!
-Spirit Shine- I've always thought that "Spirit Shine" was one of the most original album tracks ever recorded by one of the most daring and original Christian recording artists of our time. The song may not be for everyone, but I find the unusual melody line and instrumental arrangement absolutely "other-worldly". It's a breathtaking performance and Clawson shows that she is not afraid to push boundaries.
-Softly And Tenderly- Clawson's haunting vocals on the classic hymn are featured in the Academy Award-winning movie "A Trip To Bountiful". She won over many new fans who saw this movie and wondered about the arresting voice they were hearing for perhaps the first time. Clawson is also featured on the movie soundtrack.
-Bring It To Jesus- It was a wise choice to pair Clawson with the powerful and sensitive vocals of Christian artist Paul Smith. Clawson has recorded very few duets on her own projects and this is indeed one of the finest. And a great song to boot.
-One More Dayspring- I have to say that this final track on the album is not only my favorite, but one of my all-time favorite Clawson songs EVER. The song is so breathtakingly beautiful (both lyrically and melodically) and probably missed being a radio single because of it's "artsiness" (for lack of a better word). The lyrics are sheer poetry and are set to some of the most evocative music I think I've ever heard.
All-in-all this collection of hugely diverse songs manages a cohesiveness that is hard to explain. Clawson's spectacle of a voice perhaps is the common thread that can tie everything together so beautifully.
This and a number of other Clawson projects are readily available today on her own website.
There was a companion piano/vocal songbook for this album that was available in the late '80s as well as a few of the tracks on vocal accompaniment cassettes. The latter items may show up from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars "For Such A Time As This".......2003-10-14

Heading for work this morning I turned on the radio to this song.
It was so awesomely beautiful. I did not want it to end. I knew I had to track this song down and have it for my own. I searched the web until I found it and ordered right away. Of course in the meantime I have told everyone I came in contact with about this CD, this song inparticular and how it spoke to me. I shared this song with my brother and told him he needed to sing it at church. Thank you Wayne Watson for using your talent to share Jesus Christ in such an inspirational and meaningful way.

    5 out of 5 stars Way Home.......2001-06-26

I have never had a song stay with me like "For Such A Time As This," a song that inspires us to stop and consider the work which Jesus has for us to do in this earthly life. The message of this song is to forget whatever ugliness there may be in the past; to thank God for what He has done and to look forward in the confidence of His strength to the present and future as a laborer together with Him. As it should be, the focus in the song is on Jesus, who is our life and our salvation. Thank you, Wayne Watson, for sharing this inspirational testimony and exhoration to allow Jesus to live His life through us.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible Songs.......2000-01-11

My personal favorites are FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS, GROWING, and COME HOME. This CD has transcended other Contemporary Christian CDs for its ability to have a very universal approach to all Christians. Not too hard, not to soft, it's contemplative texts and lyrics are simply among the best in all Christian composers and performers.
