The last time Bruce Springsteen gave up E Street for Folk Street, the band of fiddles, banjos, and accordions--sans audience--was recording 2006's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions in the informality of his living room. This time the Boss takes his American-music foray to Ireland for a three-night stint on the north quay of Dublin's River Liffey. The 23 songs drawn from those performances cover most of the songs from the Pete Seeger tribute, but venture drastically into Springsteen's popular back catalog ("Atlantic City," "Highway Patrolman," "Blinded By the Light") while delving further into his affinity for multiple styles of music, from folk and blues to gospel and country. "If I Should Fall Behind" plays like a tear-jerking last call in a dimly lit pub. "Open All Night" has been shaped into pure swing, complete with pedal steel and sax. And "Jesse James," with its furious banjo, spectator handclaps, and Springsteen howl, could pass for the Pogues, circa 1985. A simultaneously released DVD uses nine cameras to capture every sweat-beaded highlight, from the tin whistle of "Further Up the Road" to an arena bursting out in a "We Shall Overcome" singalong. --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, raucous, joyful, heartbreaking.......2007-07-13

I'll echo the other reviewers and say that this is undoubtedly the best live CD I've ever heard, a testament to a combination of the music, lyrics, players, and timeliness of the message.

Springsteen is almost impossible to review, but I'll just say that, as much as I loved the Rising, Live in Barcelona, and Devils and Dust, the Seeger Sessions and this live album have taken him into a musical stratosphere that maybe only Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson can touch -- pure Americana.

Most of the other reviewers have adequately pointed out the highlights, but I'll say that the mournful dirge that the band transformed "When the Saints Come Marching In" to made tears stream down my face when I first heard this version, especially as it comes in the set after "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". Folk music is as relevant as it ever was.

If you like any strain of Americana roots music -- blues, folk, jazz, gospel, Western swing, roots country, mountain/Scots/Irish music -- this concert will blow you away and make you sing with the crowd.

5 out of 5 stars The best live CD I've ever heard.......2007-07-11

The Boss doesn't make bad CDs or bad concerts, I am told. I've wanted to hear him in concert since I heard his first songs. I actually was getting tickets to one of the shows that got cancelled due to a band member's illness and he's come to two cities--after I've left them. If I never make it, this CD is better than a lot of the live shows that I have been lucky enough to see.

I miss the E Street Band, but the Sessions Band he's gathered for this effort is excellent. His backup singers are soulful and the 17 piece band can handle anything from swing to Irish without missing a beat.

"Varied" is a mild description for this CD. Anyone else did this kind of concert, you'd have mixed reviews. Bruce can put folk next to swing next to gospel and then turn around and rock the house without ticking people off. He's also going international, doing American music right next to Irish traditional ballads and it appears the Dublin audience is eating it up.

Bruce breathes new life into the music here. I grew up hearing "Jesse James" but it wasn't like this. And "Jacob's Ladder" sure isn't what I heard in church.

He's also taken "Blinded by the Light" which was one of the first Bruce songs I heard and breathed new life into the live version.

"How can a poor man stand such times and live?" is one of the most heartwrenching protest songs I've heard. He really took the comments about the Dixie Chicks "Shut up and sing" to heart.

I don't like usually live CDs most of the time. Hate the staticky sussurus of the applause in the background and some idiot has got to yell the performer's name at least once per song. "Live in Dublin" is beautifully engineered. You get the 'feel' of the hall and the voices of the audience joining Bruce in song, yet the really annoying audience noise is minimized.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!!!!!.......2007-07-07

This Cd is just fantastic. I love it, and play it all the time.I think it is his best!! If you are are fan, you need to buy this Cd.

5 out of 5 stars Best music from anyone in years!!!!.......2007-06-29

Bruce Springsteen's "We Shall Overcome- The Seeger Sessions" album, and this new one "Live In Dublin- With The Sessions Band" are both nothing but pure genious!!!! It's the best music that I have heard from ANYONE in any area of music, in many years! I absolutely love it!

I am so glad that I was able to experience this in concert, in the summer of 2006 near Chicago, IL. It was an experience that I will never forget. The music just captures you, and doesn't let go.

I have purchased both versions of "We Shall Overcome" (So glad to finally have "Buffalo Gals" & "Bring 'Em Home" on CD!). I also have "Live In Dublin" on CD, and the DVD too!

Keep this type of music coming Bruce! It's great!

5 out of 5 stars springsteen at his best.......2007-06-24

It's a great combination...."o mary don't you weep" is my favorite

There's a reason Barbra Streisand's 2006 tour broke the arena house record in every city it visited, and it's because she's not only a legend but (still) a performer who effortlessly twists intimacy and friendliness and fierceness into a perfect, sturdy braid. This two-disc set, which pulls performances from dates in New York, Washington, D.C., and Fort Lauderdale, will raise its share of goosebumps. For longtime fans, they'll be a reaction to songs Streisand hasn't touched since the '70s and earlier, including "(Have I Stayed) Too Long At the Fair?" and "Unusual Way," from the Broadway musical Nine. For relative newbies, they'll be a response to her between-song patter, which touches with grace, wit, and sincerity on everything from her love for her son to her political leanings to her limitations as songwriter. The voice, of course, enthralls--there it is glowing on "Carefully Taught," one of four songs that have never before appeared on a Streisand recording, and there it is again wrapping luxurious tones all around "Evergreen," one of three songs she shares with Il Divo. Streisand--diva, political dynamo, superstar--still knows how to orchestrate a showstopper. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Wrong To Be Profane.......2007-07-14

Despite habitually retractable tentative hints of private integrity and partly with a guise of ignorance regarding sacred sexualities in marital contexts, Ms. Streisand has, apparently yearning for ethical integrities of others and herself, completed another celebration of my and her own conceptions. I have neither attended any of her concerts nor, as of yet, watched any record of these from 2006, though I both watched her portral in New York City at the Winter Garden Theater of Ms. Fanny Brice and found most of this 2-CD set comparable to that 2-stars (rated) portrayal; some of the rest is so astonishingly beautiful, particularly the first 4 tracks of CD 2 involving the birthdays of Jason G. and his mother, it makes this set worthy of placement beside some of the music composed by Gustav Mahler, who referred to the deaths of some children musically.

5 out of 5 stars STREISAND STILL THE BEST!.......2007-07-13

Barbara Streisand and Il Divo what more could you ask for! Her best album in years and with Il Divo on numbers like There's A Place For Us it gives you chills. Buy this and you will enjoy it full volume year after year!

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best of Barbra.......2007-07-07

Streisand's lastest CD, *Guilty Pleasures* was a feast of songs she had never sung before, and a reunion with Barry Gibb, who writes for Barbra in a more contemporary way than the Bergmans or Marvin Hamlisch. It is a great CD, and her voice is sublime, aided, of course, by sound technicians. All artists owe their sound engineers their careers though. She and Barry have fun on it--it's fresh and alive. Not so much with the 2006 Concert CD, a recording of the concert tour, replete with IL Divo, a mostly unnecessary addition. They are wooden men with BIG, BORING voices.

From the beginning, Babs sounds tired, hoarse and raspy. I saw her in concert, where she sometimes sounded even worse than this recording. The engineers cleaned it up as well as they could, leaving more than a hint of breathiness and weariness. Fortunately, only about half of the songs are weakly rendered; the other half really are terrific experiences. I have no idea what is going on with her voice that from song to song there could be such differences, but if I were Streisand I would leave the belting behind. It wouldn't hurt for her to warm up before she comes onstage, not as she is giving the concert. For any price, a fan would expect the performer to be well prepared. When she sings a soft ballad, she often soars, and her magic is prominent. It's painful to watch her crumble under the memory of her once youthful voice (and it was only a few years ago that she sounded like a 25 year old songstress). Streisand knows how to play a song for all its worth, but she sometimes tramples it to death. *Don't Rain in My Parade* is just not what it used to be. She hits high notes, but without the characteristic force. And she can hold the notes, or seem to, when she takes little breaks before each song's finale. Her phrasing is impeccable when she is giving it all she has to give, but too often she seems bored. This is not a bad CD, just not as inspired as *The Concert.*

It also has to be said that it seems apparent Streisand is not taking care of her God-given voice, one she herself has said that she takes for granted (unimaginable!!).

The chatter inbetween songs is dull and preachy, and it was exactly the same in every city, except for blabbering about the fattening food she ate all across the US (excluded from the CD, thank the Lord). The fans are really the stars on this CD--they roar constantly, as if they had been starving to see Streisand all their lives. It's an odd treat. The orchestra is incredible, but live, it drowns her out at times (as does IL Divo). This recording does not relfect that though.

If you do not own *The Concert* CD, buy it and skip this one. This CD is for avid, adoration-is-blind Streisand fans only and those keeping track of Streisand's vocal history..

5 out of 5 stars Streisand: Live in Concert (2 CD's).......2007-06-27

Whenever I hear Barbra sing it feels as if I were listening to an angel....The depth of her voice, the feeling she caries in every song she sings makes you fall in love, feel despair, feel hapinness or sadness....She is capable of making you feel the letter of her songs....A true Diva....My only regret is that I will never be able to see her live.....I hope they make a DVD of this concert so I can see her perform live at least on the TV set...

5 out of 5 stars Streisand: Live in Concert (2 CD's).......2007-06-26

This concert is very unique.
You are able to hear her great, mellow voice and in between songs, she talk to the audience on a personal level.
Barbara explains why she sings some of her songs, and as she's talking, she makes you feel that she is talking directly to you.

Barbara Streisand is stylish, wonderful person and performer.

I LOVE these concert CD's!

This dual disc package (DVD & CD) is an excellent way to get a real feel for what this show in Dublin must have been like. The Boss was energetic and you could tell that he had a lot of fun with this project. The music is fun, yet serious, and so much so that even my 3 and 5 yr old kids LOVE the Seeger Sessions music!

"The fact is when Bruce kicked off at 20.30 pm on that Friday night in The Point Theatre, he played non-stop right to the very end very few performers can sustain such intensity and carry a gig off that would be to us punters unforgettable those night were UNFORGETTABLE!!!!!!!I thought Bruce was never gonna stop and the highlight of the night Bruce lying exhausted over the top of the piano as if he had not a breath left in the world. Dublin was a case of the time the music and the performer - A MOMEMT IN TRUE HISTORY FOR DUBLIN TOWN." IrishJohnny

"Live In Dublin' was one of those once in a lifetime events that we all wish we had attended. Every reviewer sings praise for this CD and DVD. Veteran concert goers and reviewers say this was the best concert they had ever attended. That is all well and good, but in the end Bruce Springsteen and the Sessions Band care about their fans. You can hear the fans singing along, 'Pay Me My Money Down ', 'Further On Up The Road', 'Erie Canal' and then there is 'Mrs McGrath' an obvious Irish favorite. Just when you think this CD could not get any better, the Boss kicks it up a notch. In fact I was singing along with the rest of'em. The ambience that the live audience gives to this CD is palpable. Springsteen and the audience must have shared the energy and the vibes from the Irish. You can feel the excitement in the air. I thought the Seeger CD was one of the Boss's best CD's, but the 'Live In Dublin' is undoubtabley the best. As my best friend has said, "This is one of the top five CD's ever".

Bruce Springsteen's manager Jon Landau said, "'Live in Dublin' charts the development of a band from an informal gathering in Bruce's living room to an onstage powerhouse. It also documents the growth in Bruce's vision of American music; it includes folk music, blues, Dixieland, country, swing, gospel, rock, down to and including his own writing. It's all performed with Bruce's classic energy and focus. I think it's some of the finest music he's ever made." The 23 songs on this CD are the best of the best. Included are many from his Seegers CD. They all belong in Springsteen's chest of dreams.

This CD and DVD are memorial for the emotions that are so evident in every song. Songs like the antiwar "Mrs. McGrath" and "O Mary Don't You Weep" benefit from these in-concert performances, "and a 17-piece band allows Springsteen to freewheel onto back roads" said Marty Lance. "If I Should Fall Behind" becomes a lovely waltz, "Open All Night" swings like Bob Wills, and "Growin' Up" and "Blinded by the Light" are new arrangements. "The high point, however, just might be "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live," the 1929 Blind Alfred Reed song that Springsteen has retrofitted with new lyrics about the government's bungling of Hurricane Katrina's aftermath. Bruce's connection to folk protest deepens, on the rewrite of "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". A Depression era classic that Springsteen found on a Ry Cooder album and then amended with his own brilliantly Bush-baiting verse is perhaps the most politically extreme and, as hammered home here, exultant performance of his career." Even more wonderful is "Eyes On The Prize", sung with Mark Anthony Thompson. "If I Should Fall Behind", a duet with Patty Sciafla, is one of my favorites, and "When The Saints Go Marching In" and "This Little Light Of Mine" rock free and easy. "In short, it's everything Springsteen's big-hearted thoughtfully impassioned take on Americana ever set out to be. Swing out sisters and brothers, swing out."
GAVIN MARTIN

Columbia Records released 'Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live in Dublin' a concert DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and separate two-CD set release, as well as a combination DVD/CD package. The two-CD set, DVD and Blu-ray Disc each feature 23 songs drawn from the band's performances in Dublin, Ireland at The Point on November 17, 18 and 19, 2006. The DVD can be seen on selected PBS stations and a glorious DVD it is;. PBS shouold reel in the cash after viewing this marvelous DVD.

There are not enough superlatives in my repetoire to register the delight of this CD. I have played it many times and will soon listen again.

5 out of 5 stars bruce morphing?.......2007-06-23

Back in the 70's and 80's I used to purchase all Bruce's records, collect all his bootleg albums, stand in line sometimes overnight to get tickets to his shows ... Ah! you get the picture.

But once the Born in the USA tour was over, Bruce went down the tubes (in my book). Yeah, he still did some great shows, but those memories faded fast. He seemed to be getting an attitude.

Here, however, he seems to have once again captured some of his earlier energy and commitment to the fans. This double-cd is great! He definitely has regained his knack (here) for musical arrangements that'll stand the test of time.

If you are a floundering Bruce fan, get this one; it'll be one cd you'll wear out. Well worth the money.

1 out of 5 stars Will the real Bruce Springsteen please stand up?.......2007-06-11

I'm sorry, I've been a lifelong fan of Springsteen. I'm all ready to hear different interpretations of his music, but some songs just aren't meant for the banjo treatment. Bruce! Get a clue, they're not shouting "Bruuuuuccce" any more.... Just something that sounds like it. Don't get me wrong, the material he covered from Seeger influenced music is fine, not my favourite, but he covers it ok. Turning "If I should Fall behind" into a three-quarter time waltz... A song full of angst such as "Growing up" becomes a square dance with good old boys as the chorus... My ears are bleeding....

I bought this project after hearing a few samples and I knew this CD had to be in my collection.
The production on this CD is simply and not overdone; the harmonies and the instrumentation are beautiful in a way that incorporates you in the presence of God.
Buy this CD and you will not be disappointed...

2 out of 5 stars This was not recorded live in Kenya..........2007-05-15

Good music here...great presentation. But this was not recorded in Kenya - as the album states. It was instead recorded live at the Potter's House in Dallas with some instrumentation recorded in the studio. I know...it's disappointing to hear that. By the way, most of these songs are covers...not original songs. Several artists have recorded these songs and that hurts the album's value a bit. But the choir sounds very good and there's some great singing on board.

5 out of 5 stars HIghly recommended.......2007-05-09

If you love Africa and you love gospel music then this is for you! Bishop Jakes features in great form but so do the Potter's House choir, with their forays into Kiswahili much appreciated by the Kenyan audience. My own favourite tracks go from the energy of 'Celebrate' to the fervour of 'Grace' and the invitation to victory in 'Praise is my weapon'. I hope there will be more CD's of this quality and Biblical accuracy.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Spiritual Uplifting CD.......2007-04-11

Wow, the Potter's House Choir really shows out in Kenya. There is music on here to uplift any situation. Just simply enjoy the experience. I felt as though I was there with them. Praise the Lord in Kenya with the Potter's House Choir and T D Jakes and your soul won't be disappointed.

One of the greatest concert recordings of all time. How could it be less, with B.B. King performing some of his best material before a literally captive audience in an Illinois prison? "Worry, Worry" and "How Blue Can You Get" take on deeper meanings here, although King works the latter's camp lyrics as if he were in a juke joint. His mix of down-home humility and commanding stagecraft is instantly appealing. And his guitar barks, sings, and squeals with such authority that this is a bravura performance from the first bent, soul-searing note. A true desert-island disc. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars BB in Action.......2006-11-08

    B. B. King is more than a talented musician and songwriter, he is a phenomenal entertainer as well. He works a crowd like few others with his obvious love for people and his devotion to giving his best. This album captures BB as he is best, live and in action. He does not need light shows or other props to sell his work, he just plays and sings with a style and an infectious joy that few entertainers can match. One of his best albums.

    5 out of 5 stars Arguably B.B. King's Best.......2006-01-14

Fans often call B.B. King the king of the blues guitar, but if B.B. were only a brilliant guitarist he wouldn't be a household name for decades. B.B. King is also a powerful singer, a terrific interpreter of others' material, an effective bandleader and - most importantly - a thoroughly professional entertainer. You can experience all B.B. King's sides on the "Cook County Jail" CD.

Virtually every cut on the CD is a powerhouse. Although the Cook County Jail setting might lead one to expect that B.B. King would play up the outlaw aspects of the blues (the way that Johnny Cash did with his prison LPs), B.B. takes the opposite approach. He delivers a well-rehearsed and utterly professional show. It must have seemed a revelation to rock fans, as most blues-rock concerts at the time were notoriously sloppy affairs. But it's what we expect from B.B. King. He may define himself as a bluesman, but B.B. applied many lessons learned from tight jazz combos.

For the uninitiated, the strong performances of B.B. King's best-known hits "Sweet Sixteen" and the "Thrill is Gone" will be the selling points, but every track has its delights. For me, the strongest moment comes with "How Blue Can You Get?" Here, we clearly get to experience how B.B. King is able to feed off the energy of a responsive audience, to the point where the inmates are practically bandmembers. When we hear their laughter and applause, we know that B.B. King has won over one of the most difficult audiences to please. Every solo on the CD is well-constructed, and at no time does B.B. allow himself to become self-indulgent.

The CD's short running time is the only deficit. While appropriate for an early 1970s LP, this is one short concert by modern CD standards. It would be nice to see this CD reissued with material cut from the original release (as is the usual trend for live album reissues), but there is no denying this is one of the very few live albums worth revisiting again and again. It belongs in the collection of anyone who truly loves post-war blues.

5 out of 5 stars Best of BB King.......2005-09-18

This CD captures the very essence of what makes Blues Boy King the King of the Blues. The power of BB's music thunders througout the CD. This album has the best rendition of "The Thrill is Gone" I have ever heard, and I've heard just about all the versions he has done over the years. You can almost see him crooning to the microphone with his eyes closed, and Lucille gives this song so much more with her solo at the end. If anything buy this CD for the "The Thrill is Gone"; as soon as you get it turn it up, sit down and close your eyes...

    3 out of 5 stars Eh.......2004-09-01

    I don't get it.
I had high hopes for this CD. Every review I've read, including the editorial review here at Amazon, has been jubilant, and "Live In Cook County Jail" is certainly not a bad record, but it's not great either, and at times it's barely even good.

I have an awful lot of blues albums, and I like to think that I know good blues when I hear it, but I just can't figure out what it is that people find so appealing about this recording.
Sure, King does a very good rendition of his trademark "The Thrill Is Gone" and plays excellent guitar on a great reading of "How Blue Can You Get", but "Every Day I Have The Blues" is marred by bland vocals and horrible drumming (easily the most annoying ever heard on a blues record!).

As for the rest of the seven songs, "Worry, Worry" trails off into long, sometimes tedious improvisations and is badly mixed. The first half of the medley "3 O'Clock Blues / Darlin' You Know I Love You" is pretty good, but "Darlin' You Know I Love You" is more jazz ballad than blues, and while I enjoy a good jazz ballad, I don't expect to find them on blues records. Besides, this one is not really that good either.

King does a good job with "Sweet Sixteen", but the album winds down with a closing number, "Please Accept My Love", which doesn't feel like it belongs on a blues album...there's more pop than blues to it.
All in all, there is some good and some bad on this album, and quite a lot in between. King's playing on "How Blue Can You Get" and "The Thrill Is Gone" rivals anything he's ever done, but those two songs by themselves are not enough to make this a great album.

5 out of 5 stars When BB is on.......2004-08-31

This is one of those concerts where BB is on fire with a very good crowd that was happy to see him. While BB is usually very good in concert some nights he is just on fire and this is one of them.

A blueprint for the early-'70s Laurel Canyon sound, Judee Sill's short-lived star was still shining brightly when she pulled into London for a pair of live shows in 1972 and 1973, recorded by the BBC. Sill performing entirely solo, her saintly voice is escorted only by acoustic guitar or piano on a playlist culled wholly from her 1971 self-titled debut and 1972's Heart Food. Only an eager audience's response between tracks and Sill's own timid introductions of what lies next remind you that the album is live. Apologizing for her thick accent, she tells of hearing "Lady-O" on the radio as recorded by the Turtles, her dreams of space-age raptures turning up in "Enchanted Sky Machines," and how "Down Where the Valleys Are Low" channels '50s R&B into a "religious love song." Then she utterly nails the diffident beauty so prevalent on her studio recordings, such as the meandering vocals of "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" and the nursery-rhyming "Lamb Ran Away with the Crown." Sill's nearly five-minute interview with the BBC's Bob Harris is a bonus, and a haunting peek into a future cut far too short. --Scott Holter

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Skippable Yet Great.......2007-07-05

This is not a great starting point for a new Judee Sill listener - those people should get her two albums, Judee Sill and Heart Food. And it's not necessarily something that a person who has those two albums will find worthwhile to have - there are no songs not on those albums, many of the songs included in these various live sessions are duplicated, and there are too many great songs from the first two albums that aren't represented (The Archetypal Man, The Desperado, et al). But having said all of that, I love this CD. Even though the live versions of the songs are not much different than the studio versions, it's a pleasure to listen Judee sitting there by herself, with just a guitar and piano, playing these sublime folk songs. And in her introductions to the songs, as well as the interview with Bob Harris, she sounds endearingly nervous, totally and painfully honest, and like the songs mean the world to her. Judee Sill is like a Joni Mitchell with much more danger around her. Judee was all these things in her short life: a reform school girl, a junkie, a prostitute, an acid head, a heartbroken lover, a supremely gifted songwriter, musician, and vocalist. She was a visionary. She was the first artist to have an album put out on David Geffen's Asylum Records, she was produced by Graham Nash, her songs were covered by the Hollies and the Turtles . . . yet her recording career never really took off. Judee Sill is a wonder, somebody who was just too troubled and too tragic to last long in this life. Her songs initially strike you as pleasant little folk tunes, but as you listen more the lyrics and the arrangements start to get into your head, and eventually you realize you are listening to something both beautiful and otherworldly. Get this disc to hear Judee perform live and to hear her talk, and if you don't have the first two albums, go get them as well.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary performances, essential for fans.......2007-06-24

This is great. If no new songs, it's still marvelous to get the purity of Judee with just guitar or piano accompaniment. And the interviews are cool too, & informative about her attitude and POV. Some songs like "The Kiss" take on even more beautiful aspects I think. Maybe not the place to start for newcomers to her or
casual fans perhaps, but marvelous to have.

I first heard Miss Anita O'Day in 1956 at a friends house and have never ceased listning. she was a natural jazz voice and her interpretations of the lyrics swung every time.whether in front of some of biggest bands or small groups. this album is a glowing example and I do not why it so long to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Anita O'Day at her very best in Tokyo.......2007-04-11

Anyone wishing to understand the fully greatness of that most swinging and original of jazz singers need look no further than this sizzling release. Never before on CD, this is an unedited, live concert featuring O'Day fronting a top-notch Japanese band playing her famous arrangements. It's all here: her sensual sound, her hip, flip attitude, her incomparable use of musical time, her unparalleled improvisational gifts, an entire arsenal of talents focused on the task at hand. If you already know and love O'Day, grab this one with confidence. If not, what a voyage of discovery this disc will provide. Freeman Gunter

5 out of 5 stars Anita at her best surfaces after 44 years in the vault.......2007-04-07

Kayo Stereophonic has has a real knock out with this sound track of a TV concert songstress Anita O'Day performed in Tokyo 44 years ago during the acme of her jazz singing career. With a minimum of comments and a maximum of music, the late legend offers 15 of her best-known tunes from her years with Verve and her own Emily label. Kayo has issued or reissued other O'Day CDs in recent years, and this is the best of the bunch. Anita plus fine tunes, sound quality and musicianship from two Japanese groups add up to a real bargain. Agent Robbie Cavolina and producer Takao Ishizuka have outdone themselves in adding this to the Kayo inventory.

As the centerpiece and thematic heart of Radney Foster's mix of rock and reflection, "Half of My Mistakes" sounds like an instant classic, a celebration of how the missteps can lead you places you wouldn't have gone otherwise and make you who you are. Similarly, the closing "Never Gonna Fly" reinforces the sense that you can't reap rewards without taking some risks, that you have to stumble in order to soar. With a backing band including guitarist Waddy Wachtel and drummer Charley Drayton (who worked together on Keith Richards's solo albums), ace session bassist Bob Glaub, and Wallflowers keyboardist Rami Jaffe, Foster takes some chances here that don't always pay dividends. He pushes the cliché of the intoxicating kiss to the extreme on the Stones-ish opener, "Drunk on Love," while "The Kindness of Strangers" revisits the hooker with a heart of gold in less-than-convincing fashion. Dreamier fare such as "I Won't Lie to You" and "Fools That Dream" (with gorgeous vocal counterpoint from Kim Richey) shows the benefit of a lighter touch, and "Big Idea" just lets 'er rip. --Don McLeese

Foster has had several overlapping and parallel careers. He made his initial splash as a songwriter, providing material for Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Ricky Van Shelton, Tanya Tucker and others. This led to a partnership in the successful duo Foster & Lloyd and a trio of albums for RCA. When the pair split, Lloyd worked on a power-pop solo career, while Foster continued his songwriting and began hosting "Crossroads" on CMT. In addition to landing songs with Sara Evans ("A Real Fine Place to Start"), Collin Raye ("Anyone Else"), the Dixie Chicks ("Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)" and "Never Say Die"), Foster began a solo career in 1992.

After three albums for RCA, Foster moved to Dualtone, where he's previously released one live and one studio album. This, his third, finds the singer-songwriter backed by a stellar pick-up band of carefully selected players, including guitarist Waddy Wachtel, bassist Bob Glaub, and drummer Charlie Drayton. This is not your typical studio crew, and the difference is startling; this is a lot rootsier production than 2002's "Another Way to Go." Wachtel's guitar is ever more expressive than the typical Nashville chart reader, and Glaub and Drayton form a rhythm section whose beat is as much expression as a meter of convenience.

Foster's latest batch of tunes includes the electric country-blues "Drunk on Love," the soulful love song "Sweet and Wild," the straight-up honky-tonk two-step of "Big Idea," and the punchy Texas country of "Prove Me Right." Kim Richey's backing vocal and Wachtel's guitar solo are perfect accompanists for the introspective coming-of-middle-age assessment and pragmatic acceptance of "Half of My Mistakes, and Foster's words are touching in the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold vignette "The Kindness of Strangers."

Though he's a more electrifying performer than fellow Texas songsmith Bruce Robison, Foster's lack of recent commercial success suggests that many songs here are ripe for Nashville's picking. "I Won't Lie to You" could easily be served up by Tim & Faith, and the brokenhearted "New Zip Code" might launch a new radio star. What's particularly impressive about Foster's latest is that with no steel, only small amounts of fiddle, modern production, and several songs that could serve the mainstream, he still sounds more Texas than Nashville, and more country than crossover. Foster is that rare country artist who can sound contemporary and (dare to say it) commercial, without losing his music's soul. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. 5 out of 5 stars Again, a superb production.......2006-07-19

Radney Foster grows on me every time he puts something new out, and this newest effort is phenomenal. It is the ONLY thing that has been on the CD player or the MP3 for weeks (making the spouse just a little more than crazy). I wish he could get the air time he deserves on mainstream radio. While he receives accolades as a writer, for whatever reason he just isn't getting onto the radio - perhaps because he has chosen to follow his roots and not go Hollywood, or perhaps because Foster appears to be the quintessential family man and just doesn't do many live shows.

"Fools That Dream" - what a haunting message and melody with Kim Richey lending a beautiful harmony. Interestingly, I wasn't as taken with of "Half of My Mistakes", which the editorial review brands and instant classic and which I understand is actually being played over the radio, although I do identify with the lyrics. "Drunk on Love" is just fun! Loud, crashing, good ole Texas music. "New Zip Code" - well, we've all been there, or at least had the feeling that we wanted to pack our life up and move it on down the road.

I, too, would have liked more fiddle, but the overall effort here is spectacular. I'll be interested to hear what his acoustic only CD sounds like that is only available on his website at this time...but I've never met a Radney Foster melody I didn't like, so I'm sure it will be as superb as this CD.

Try it. It took me about three times of listening to it for it to finally hit me that this is probably RF's finest moment. Just great listening all the way around.
