WOW 1998: 30 Top Christian Artists & Songs
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
As with its extremely successful predecessors, WOW 1998 gathers a selection of the most popular songs by the hottest artists gracing contemporary Christian music that year. The two-disc set has one disc of sacred pop music (the red CD) and one of sacred rock (the black CD). Featured are the likes of Rebecca St. James, Jars of Clay, and Petra on the first; 4HIM, BeBe and CeCe, and Anointed on the second. "Difference" by Jaci Velasquez, the acoustic flavorings of Caedman's Call, and DC Talk's supremely hummable "Colored People" are standouts on the red disc. Steven Curtis Chapman, Point of Grace, and Bryan Duncan let loose on the black disc. Each song, including relatively subdued turns by Sandi Patty and Kathy Troccoli, complements the whole, giving Christians a spiritual option to the less flexible tunes of Sunday mornings and the tried-and-true hits of yesterday's contemporary Christian music. --Paige La Grone --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

One of the best WOWs of all time.......2004-03-07
The balance of musical styles is perfect. A unique variety that's very mainstream, very hip. Give this one a listen, and you'll be humming "Colored People", "Hope To Carry On", and "Missing Person" around the office all day.
Can't get tired of the music! WOW!.......2003-04-18

WOW 1998.......2002-08-16
I enjoy buying these double CD's because they give you a great idea of what the best Christian song's were for any particular year. I have the CD's for 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. Invariably they have some of my favourite artists on such as Steven Curtis Chapman, Twila Paris, Sandi Patty, Michael W. Smith, Avalon and many more.
My personal favorite.......2001-08-14
I have listened to many of the WOW cds and this is my personal favorite. Jars of Clay, Carmen, et. al. are just a joy to listen to. Every song on the first cd is great. I would highly recommend this cd over many of the other WOW compilations.

Great .......2006-12-28
Every song on this CD is great. I listen to it on my way to work every morning to keep me lifted and motivated. I blast it so that every person on the street can hear it, not because I want too but because they need to know how good God is to my family and to me.
Outstanding series; best way to get into contemporary gospel.......2005-09-24
I've been following gospel music for some time as both a fan and a performer. While I haven't been playing much over the last few years, the WOW gospel series has helped me to stay current with gospel music and find new artists that inspire me. Putting together a top shelf gospel compilation is a real challenge. On the one hand, many worshippers like the big choir sound of artists like Hezekiah Walker. Others dig the more urban contemporary tracks that borrow more heavily from R&B. This compilation is great because it's an affordable compilation that will expose you to a wide range of talented artists.
There are some classic tracks on this album. "Stomp" was a big hit of course, one of the first tunes to really crossover from gospel radio to R&B radio stations. While you may disagree with a gospel song based on a Funkadelic sample, you can't deny its impact and its influence on what choirs are doing today. I dig "No Weapon" even though it's a remix of the Fred Hammond song. I have the original on another compilation so this version was a good addition to me. Likewise "Speak to My Heart" is not the classic New York Restoration Choir version, but a new modern reworking by Donnie McClurkin.
There are many other standout tracks as well. "Shout" by Milton Brunson is a jam and a half, up there with things like "My Mind's Made Up" [not included on this compilation]. "He Did It All" is a different kind of tune for John P Kee, one that uses New Orleans trombone in a way that shows that he understands the roots of gospel music. "I've Got a Testimony", "Total Praise" and "Order My Steps" are tunes that many church choirs have performed since they were recorded. Here you get the original versions.
Only a few of the tunes made me scratch my head. Donald Lawrence's "Stranger" sounds like a bad imitation of Kirk Franklin and his spoken stuff unfortunately dominates his choir. Two moments that may have been good live are unfortunately recorded on this CD: "Mother Sherman Story" has almost five minutes of Carlton Pearson testimony before it starts and "Helen's Testimony" isn't even a song. "Helen's Testimony" is about 8 minutes of her testifying about how low she fell before accepting Christ and about how her grandmother prayed for her. Some listeners will be moved by that, but I found it repetitive after listening to it a couple of times.
The few mistakes on this compilation don't diminish its impact and the value of this series. For those of us who can't afford buying 25-30 quality gospel CDs a year, you get much of the best gospel and can really decide which artists you want to get know even better.

Great.......... A Real Blessing.......2005-05-03
This album is i think one of the best in the WOW Gospel Series. Songs like "I Got a Testimony" and "Be Encouraged" are a blessing, and uplifting. "Order My Steps" and "The Battle is The Lords" are powerful. "Total Praise" by Richard Smallwood, words can not express how much this song speaks to my soul. This album is a must have in the series.
WOW 1998 - awesome arrangment of praise&worship 1998 is #1.......2003-02-06
WOW 1998 is a powerful and a awesome arrangement of praise and worship music. To me it is the best one to date. It was the first one I ever purchased and I've bought them every year since and none has touched me the way that this one has. I lent it to a non believer at work she loved it and she never returned it so I have looked alot of places I;m happy to have found it here.
It's a great way to sample an artist's music before you purchase a whole CD,
Comes highly recommended will definately enhance your relationship and walk with the Lord. You'll learn appreciate him more.
Great Inspirational Gospel!.......2002-01-04
I have to say that this is a truly anointing gospel CD. I still listen to this cd quite often, as well as the other wow gospel series cds that I have collected. The message is given by several contemporary and traditional gospel artists, so there is something on here for everyone to enjoy. This cd is definitely one to add to your gospel collection. I plan to collect all the others in this series that I do not have, because I enjoyed this one so much. I know you will too.
