Simple Praise
Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
A word from Buddy Greene This recording began as an accident. I spent a day in the studio with pianist, Dave Huntsinger, and engineer, Brent King, making a work tape of some ideas for a long-overdue follow-up to my 1987 instrumental album, Praise Harmonica. We recorded seven duets and frankly, I didn't know if I had accomplished anyting or not. I went home a little diappointed.
A couple of weeks later, I played the taped "roughs" from those sessions and, to my surprise, liked what I found. The simple duets brought to mind a small town Sunday afternoon, gathered around the piano in the parlor; a nostalgic, perhaps hopelessly romatic thought, but a refreshing one, nonetheless, in the midst of the confusions and complications of contemporary life.
After playing the tapes for a few other tired and too-busy friends whose opinions I value, my suspicious were confirmed--the songs and the way they were presented did have a welcomed and soothing effect. I became convinced that, with the right treatment, great hymns and gospel songs could "live" well in simple settings. I decided to continue with the project as time and money allowed.
It was very apparent, after working with David, that a first rate accompanist was a necessity. He had set a high standard on those first selections with brilliant playing that proved not only his command of practically any style, but also his total sensitivity to both the lyrical and traditional aspects of the song. Also, playing with a musician of David's caliber inspired me to do my best.
However, a little more instrumental variety would be nice, so over the next year, I arranged two more sessions with my friends, John Darnall and Don Potter, both excellent guitarists. John, a gifted musician, arranger and producer, played beautifully on three tunes and engineered them as well at his studio. Don, who is well known for his warm, distinctive guitar work with everyone from Chuck Mangione to Wynonna, and who had co-produced the Buddy Green & Friends--Live album, played impeccably well, as usual, and also engineered our four duets.
Towards the end of the project, I asked bassist, Craig Nelson, and percussionist, Eric Darken, to play on a few numbers. They fit right in, tastfully enhancing things in a supportive, unobtrusive way. Some last minute overdubs were engineered by Brendan Harkin (who also threw in a nifty little guitar harmony at the end of "How Majestic. . . "); and my old friend Brent came back in for one last session with David and Craig, and for the final mix.
What I hope to have accomplished is this: create a simple sanctuary for these old familiar songs to inspire the listener to relax and pull aside from the clutter, busy-ness and noise of modern existence; and to read the lyrics--maybe even sing along--and hear the Gospel again; hopefully to be encouraged to join all creation in simple and pure praise of the one true, triune God--Eternal Father, Our Great Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, the Spirit of Life.
About the Artist
Buddy Greene is a disarming host with an engaging sense of humor...an acoustic guitar...a travel case full of harmonicas...a compelling voice...and an easy-going batch of songs that, in a disarming way, speaks to the reality - the highs and lows, victories and defeats, challenges and opportunities - of daily life. As a young boy in Macon, GA, he learned to play folk songs on a ukelele, then graduated to the guitar. Soon a band with neighborhood friends - Buddys Buddies - was formed and he...

Album Description
Songwriter, harmonica virtuoso, guitarist Buddy Greene has created an inspired instrumental recording that combines the most personal, best-loved hymns, gospel songs and worship & praise music with superb, deceptively simplearrangements and exquisite playing from a few close friends...some of Nashvilles finest players. Aptly titled, Simple Praise was one of the five final nomineess for the Gospel Music Associations Dove Award as Instrumental Album Of The Year in 1998. A word from Buddy Greene

Customer Reviews:
Excellent recording.......2007-05-12
If you are a fan of classical guitar than this is a must own set. I enjoy every moment.
Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23
I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.
This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.
Amazing.......2006-05-08
I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.
A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16
In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.
But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.
Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.
Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25
CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

One of Parkening's Finest.......2007-01-16
A beautiful and contemplative solo guitar recording of hymns, spirituals and other sacred works such as Mozart's Laudate Dominum and Humperdinck's Evening Prayer. Parkening is in exceptional form, the transcriptions are superb, and the recording itself is of the highest quality. Little wonder this has been an enduring classic since its release in the early 1980s.
Music that perfectly touches the soul ..........2005-10-24
Christopher Parkening is the most musically inventive person playing the classical guitar today; you must purchase this CD if you haven't already. It contains exquisitely beautiful hymns & sacred music (arranged perfectly for guitar, I might add) along with Mr. Parkenings masterful transcriptions of works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Humperdinck.
Above all, this is music that glorifies God and that was the ultimate purpose of creating this CD.
The end of a Search.......2005-09-23
Classsical guitar is among the top forms of music and Christopher Parkeniong is one of the greatestartists in this genre, if not the best. I had despaired at ever findinding the CD "Simple Pleasures" and was so very pleased to locate it . I am so enjoying it now. I will be back for more as funds permit.
Simple, yet delightful, Gifts!.......2005-02-21
This was one of the first CD's I purchased back in 1988, and I bought it on a whim. Of the hundreds of CD's I now own, including many genres, this one remains in my list of top 10 favorites for a number of reasons.
1. Mr. Parkening plays every song on it with remarkable technical excellence and clearly discernible passion.
2. It includes classical, folksy, and reflective material, which could create a rough flow, but Mr. Parkening moves deftly from mood to mood leaving the listener with a sense of seamless transitions.
3. Although the songs on it are all religious classics they are played without pretense, which makes it accessible to any listener and uplifting for those seeking spiritual refreshment.
In closing, the is one thing "wrong" with this CD is it's too short!
Exquisite & Divine.......2001-02-17
This treasure chest holds such jewels! The cd rushes in with the joyous energy of Bach's Praludium, allows you to reflect and catch your breath on Pritchard's Hyfrydol and Variation, and flows forward with the grace and underlying passion that makes this a precious favorite.

REAL MUSIC.......2007-01-16
THIS IS MUSIC YOU CAN LISTEN TO EVERY DAY AND ENJOY OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
White bread, well-baked in spots.......2005-08-12
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir that performs on this disc is a tightly-knit, well-conducted unit, and some of the tracks on the disc border on the ethereal. "Lead, Kindly Light," "Sweet Hour of Prayer" (in parts) and "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," for example, touch the soul and bring tears to the eyes.
However, on other arrangements the choir sounds like a group of white folks far removed from the remainder of humanity. For example, the opening track, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," and also "All Creatures of Our God and King" sound rote and perfunctory, like a group of elementary school students (with very fine voices, to be sure) going through the paces of a daily sing: elevator music on a grand scale. At the opposite extreme, sudden dynamic shifts in other tracks sound pretentious. The final bars of "All Creatures of Our God and King" suggest an attempt at a grand finale, but lack even a hint of majesty or passion. The choir lacks any apparent understanding of the Shaker spirit in "Simple Gifts" --- rather like Lawrence Welk playing Bob Marley. (Not that I've ever seen a Shaker in dreadlocks.) "Battle Hymn of the Republic" begins majestically, but turns into a caricature, and then reverts to a semblance of glory (except for a brief flirtation with a minor key).
The high praise lavished on this disc by other reviewers is no surprise: It is of very high quality for what it is. The choir offers a lovely sound. However, more than half the tracks are seriously flawed, and the musicianship is sufficiently peculiar on the whole as to lower the rating considerably.
This is the one!.......2002-08-24
If you want to hear the best of the best, this CD is it. These hymn arrangements are just beautiful and very touching. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the choir and wants to feel a little closer to heaven. The choir seems to sing literally with one voice and you feel like they are singing just for you. Congratulations to the new conductor, Craig Jessop and all those who contributed to the quality that went into producing this CD.
A Must for the Sabbath.......2002-04-17
I LOVE IT!!! What better way to enjoy the Sabbath than to sing of the Lord's Praises with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? This album is just the ticket! It's very powerful, and uplifting.
What? You mean I can only give this album five stars? But that doesn't even BEGIN to do it justice!
I love it. Truly a masterpiece!
A Must for Sabbath.......2002-02-05
If you only own one Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD, this is the one. It has creative arrangements of many favorite hymns, as well as the best recording of the Wilhousky Battle Hymn arrgmt that I have ever come across. The only downer: it has (another) recording of Simple Gifts, which has been beat to death by choirs in the last decade.
I especially love the 'Glory' pieces on it: Full of timpani, brass, and alleluias- one of those discs you turn all the way up and direct the stereo when noone is looking. I hope my neighbors like it too; they probably hear it quite a bit.

Customer Reviews:
simple but amazing.......2006-01-29
The guitar and vocals on this CD will blow you away. Of all of the Catholic Classics CDs, this one is my favorite - an awesome way to learn some of those more traditional songs without a voicy choir.
Surprising, but beautifully done.......2006-01-12
I really expected a more traditional arrangement with organ & choir, so I was in for a bit of a shock right off the bat. The arrangements are relatively simple with one or two voices and limited orchestration. However the effect is wonderful. The primary singer has an unusual high and clear voice, and the harmonies raise goosebumps with their beauty (all I know about music I learned from my highschool punk rock band, so you'll have to listen to the tracks above if my description is unclear).
Some of the tracks are forgettable, but the others are truly outstanding. "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow" is wonderful, and exceeded only by "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name." The mixture of latin chant with vernacular on "For the Beauty of the Earth/Ubi Caritas" and "Go Silent Friend/In Paradisium" was tastefully done. The performers and arrangers also rescued the otherwise saccharine "How Great Thou Art" and turned it into a genuinely inspiring hymn, although they were unable to accomplish a similar feat with the thoroughly overplayed "Amazing Grace."
So many other people have beautiful renditions of Ave Maria, so the track on this CD barely registers for me. Panis Angelicus is done better on many other disks as well.
Still, if it were only "Praise God..." and "Holy God..." on this CD, it would be worth the price. Truly excellent.
This is the one to get........2003-09-08
Very beautiful and inspiring rendition of some favorite Catholic classics. The most beautiful: "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow" which fades in the middle into a chant-like revery-inducing song only to flourish again with new-found faith at the end. Second most beautiful: "Holy God, We Prise They Name," which builds in three voices towards the end, one added for each person of the Blessed Trinity. Also noteworthy: "For the Beauty of the Earth," with its mix of Latin and English transitions and blending of Gregorian chant in between verses. Good rendition of "Ave Maria" and "Simple Gifts." A lot of steel-string guitar played strong and true, but not overwhelming the beautiful voice of David Fischer. Fischer accompanies himself on the best tracks, to great effect (especially "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow").

A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28
Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!
an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31
Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

Perfect introduction to the carillon..........1998-10-30
James Lawson plays the carillon at the Crystal Cathedral, a unique instrument because of its major-third overtones as opposed to the typical minor-third overtones of a carillon. The Cathedral Carillon has a particularly rich sound, which Lawson harnesses with a flair in his arrangements of hymns tunes and recognizable classics. The carillon has long been known as the most democratic of instruments, and Lawson plays it as it should be heard--with music people know and love.
This recording is very relaxing as well, and is of paticular use as focus music for prayer or small worship settings, or for listening at the end of a long day.

Aural bliss.......2006-12-30
That "Telarc Sound"... what else can I say. Rich powerful sound from 5 full range speakers bursts into your living room, immersing you in the magic of the Mormon Tabernacle and that "telarc sound".
A good mix of the familiar and unfamiliar.......2001-11-15
The Morman Tabernacle Choir used to sound mighty impressive on the old mono LPs; how much better they sound on CDs with Telarc's Direct Stream Digital. Granted that each of their albums sound pretty much alike in their choice of songs and in the style in which they are sung, I was happy to see that their latest offering, "The Sound of Glory" (CD-80579) at least includes some not overly familiar selections such as "Lead, Kindly Light" and "Take Time to Be Holy" along with the truly familiar ones such as "Simple Gifts" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Craig Jessup conducts the Chorus with the Orchestra at Temple Square in (according to a sticker on the jewel case of my copy) a celebration of Salt Lake City 2002.
Without their realizing it, the producers have given us a very timely offering after the events of September 11, 2001. Thanks for that.
