One of the must-own soul albums, Greatest Hits is fattened with five extra tracks in this reissue. Al Green brought the Memphis Sound into the '70s by slightly softening it, melding smooth funkiness with his miraculous voice and innate sensitivity: his love songs, while perfect for the bedroom, are as conversational as they are blatantly seductive. By adding the likes of "Belle," a 1977 single that's a near-goodbye to the pop life, to the original lineup of "Let's Stay Together," "Look What You Done for Me," "Call Me," and the others, this edition of Greatest Hits also intriguingly fills out the story. --Rickey Wright

it's been stated by so many others..........2007-07-01
No one, but no one, is better than Al Green when it comes to heart-wrenching, gut-churning tales of heartbreak and woe.
I call it singing that is absolutely emotionally honest and believable and easy to relate to (if you've ever been in any of these situations--and who hasn't?)
The man (with his voice) has the ability to heal/mend when it comes to matters of the heart. It certainly seems that way.
Can't praise him enough.
Perfect Package for Al Green's Hits.......2007-05-16
All the best known Rev. Green songs are here, along with several lesser known, but still enjoyable, selections. This is must-have music for rock and rhythm and blues fans. You will find yourself trying to sing along.
A Greatest Hits Masterpiece.......2007-03-29
A lot if not most greatest hits collections have some hits and some padding. Not this album. This is one great collection. The five songs tacked on at the end made this album a must own masterpiece. If you like Al Green's 70's output, you WILL like this CD.Every single song is a classic.Ol Skool Al Green fans (like myself) might already have at least a couple of his albums already, but this CD sums up why he's soul legend.
P.S.:Do yourself a favor and pick up some of his 70's era albums starting with "I'm Still In Love With You" if you haven't already.
Very good.......2007-01-25
I've heard his music but never owned a CD of his, this one is really good and I enjoy it very much. Happy to add to my music collection.
Oh, Al Green...Never fails to please!.......2007-01-19
This CD is great! His music is so soulful and every song has a certain sound to it. It is pretty hard to not love Al Green. The compilation of songs chosen for this particular album are some of his greatest!!

Reminisce on Days Gone By.......2007-05-14
This compilation of hits, took me back to the days of yesteryear, when I was a little girl, in NE DC. My Childhood was a good time and there was always good music. Music that made you happy, music that identified, with whatever you were going through, and Al Green was a staple in my family's component set. To hear his smooth, melodic voice again, transports me back to those days and makes me reminisce on those days long gone.
Al Green Greatist Hits.......2007-03-09
About half of the CD was good to listen to. I mostly bought it for the song, "Let's Stay Together".
One saving grace..........2007-02-22
First thing's first: Whatever you do, don't buy the original version of this Greatest Hits album. They heartbreakingly cut off the climax of Let's Get Married and didn't bother including Take Me To The River. That aside...while an improvement over the shameful original issue of this package, the compilation still falls short! Where's For The Good Times? Where the heck is How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?? Any Al Green collection that doesn't include both, not to mention even one of, Al's most compelling and beautiful slow numbers is INCOMPLETE! Instead, they put relatively obscure songs on here like Keep Me Cryin' and Oh Me, Oh My. Do these compilers even listen to Al Green? It would be worth it to borrow or steal this, if only for the DVD live performance of Love And Happiness in 1978. It captures Al in top form in Chicago with excellent clarity and camera work. Do yourself a favor and buy the Motown Compact Command Performances, which includes all the truely essential tunes with a better track order. Then buy Let's Stay Together and I'm Still In Love With You.
Long overdue anthology of one of the great artists of the 1970's........2007-02-20
As decades go the 1970's was never among my favorites. I have always felt that save for a handful of artists the music of that decade left an awful lot to be desired. For about three and a half years in the early part of that decade, Al Green and his producer Willie Mitchell collaborated on some of the finest and most memorable soul records ever made. Finally, Capitol records has seen fit to do justice to the music of this extremely important American artist. "Al Green: The Definitive Greatest Hits" features 21 of the finest recordings spanning Al Green's entire career. By any standard this disc truly should be considered essential to any serious collection of American popular music.
What seperates "Al Green: The Definite Greatest Hits" from previous anthologies is that it offers selections spanning the entire length and breadth of Al Green's remarkable recording career. Of course this disc includes all 7 of Al's Top Ten tunes from the early 70's including "Look What You Done For Me", "I'm Still In Love With You", the #1 smash "Let's Stay Together" as well as my personal favorite "You Ought To Be With Me" from 1972. Add to these other great hits like "L-O-V-E (Love)", "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" and Al's first big Hi records hit "Tired of Being Alone" and you will quickly understand why Al Green is such an important American recording artist. One of the things that really impressed me about this collection is that Capitol chose to include Al Green's very first chart record from 1967. At that time, his name was Al Greene. His backup group was the Soul Mates. Al released "Back Up Train" on his own label and you can clearly hear why Al Green was destined to become a major star. In 1976, Al Green decided he wanted to pursue a career in gospel music. This change in musical direction would cause Al and his long-time producer Willie Mitchell to part company. His final charted record at Hi would be a tune called "Belle". The gospel influence on this tune is quite apparent. I had never heard it before and I must tell you that I absolutely loved it. Shortly thereafter, Al Green would leave the music business altogether to become a full-time minister in Memphis. In 2002, Al Green and Willie Mitchell decided that they wanted to make music together again. They would record in the very same studio in Memphis where they had made magic and history in the early 1970's. As an added treat, Capitol has chosen to add a pair of these new tunes to this collection. As you will see, Al Green has not lost it one little bit!
"Al Green: The Definitive Greatest Hits" includes a thoughtful 12 page booket that features some marvelous photos and very informative biographical information. I had completely forgotten that Al Green had a hand in writing virtually all of his hit singles! His was Southern Soul at it's absolute best! It is also worth mentioning that the remastering job is first rate. As I recall, the fidelity on those old Hi 45's was never the best. So whether you are a life-long fan or a younger person just interested in sampling this music then "The Definitive Greatest Hits" would certainly be a great choice. Highly recommended!
So sweet.......2007-02-17
If you want romance in your music this is the quintessential cd. It is Al Greens early works that put him in my heart oh so many years ago. Truly beautiful and romantic. Listen with someone you love and you will have Valentines Day all year round.

Al Green at his best! Every fan of his should purchase this CD.

There is nothing like Al Green for a day just hanging out
and listening to smooth tunes!
There are alot you can sing too, but great for dinner music playing in the background.
Excellent collection of his songs.
A Legend.......2004-02-18
This was when music was MUSIC. This is a GREAT CD. Thank you Al for giving my generation (60s, 70s & 80s)a real reason to listen, love, enjoy and appreciate good soul music from your heart. This is what real R&B is all about!
One Love
My First Al Green Album.......2002-12-19
I'd been hearing this singer on movie soundtracks and his numbers always enhanced the movie in question. This was his first album that I ever listened to and if he has even better ones, as some other reviewers here claim, I find that hard to believe. He is the consummate artist as the soulful, heartbroken, lovelorn singer. He hits each song here perfectly and is a master of conveying emotion. My favorite is "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart." The only song I could pass on is "To Sir With Love" because I've always thought it was a bad composition. Green does his best even with this lesser number.
Great for those who want to go deeper into Green's Catalog.......2001-08-30
This CD is not for the "fly by night" Al Green fan. For those fans, his "Greatest Hits" CD is probably sufficient. However, for those who want to delve deeper into Green's repertoire, this is a great CD. My only thought is that if you are that big of an Al Green fan, you will probably want to buy the individual CDs, so this CD may be repetitive. However, if you want a one stop shop for Green's more peripheral material, this CD won't do you wrong.

Al Green's father once kicked him out of his earliest gospel group, after catching him listening to Jackie Wilson. He need not have worried about Al abandoning his spiritual roots, as this new collection proves. The quivering, whispering falsetto--itself a soul standard--sounds true to form. Most of the cuts come from the reverend's more recent output, in which the digital, '80s sound is prominent. There are a few of the Willie Mitchell/Hi-era productions that sound musically closer to the soul master's most significant singles. From the tight, uptempo funk of "Chariots of Fire" to the transcendental version of "Amazing Grace," Green proves he can still bring the house down quicker than Lot's wife looking back on Gomorrah. Though some of the majesty is lost in the production, Al Green still finds a way to make gospel sound... sexy. --Marc Calhoun
Customer Reviews:
His Higher Calling.......2003-05-01
When this man of God was called to the other side instead he answered to a higher calling that is Al Green. For many there is a torment of choice between the enticing secular world and the calling of the church. Al Green found his peace and talented gift by going his own way. Not like his brothers, like Sam Cooke, Little Richard and Marvin Gaye who traded gospel melodies for early pop success and visa versa. The sounds of these black artists found their voice between the roadhouse and the revival tent in the form of soul, R&B, blues and rock & roll. Their music had been fired in the furnace of the mother church. Green has in the process created music that jubilantly celebrates his faith and not sacrificing archetypes that made him one of the great innovators of modern music.
When growing up Green was influenced by a wide range of music, from the Beatles, Roy Orbison and Jackie Wilson. A fact that his God-fearing father thrown him out on the street, after catching him listening to a 45 of Wilson's "A Woman, A Lover, A Friend" in his room. It was a turning point for Green to launch his contemporary soul career. He was the front man for The Soul Mates then he went solo. Later he joined Memphis songwriter and musician Willie Mitchell. Their work would forge together a sound borrowed from his gospel roots. It was his link he kept through his secular recording career. His epic struggles with contradictions of gospel and pursuing his own ecstasies. His moment of truth hit in the summer of 1973, his Lord found Him. It took a while for his Born Again experience to be translated into his music. It was until a horrific incident at the hands of a crazed fan in 1974 that made him choose to follow God's calling. This decision caused the separation of his partnership with Mitchell. In a Memphis sanctuary, the Full Gospel Tabernacle he devoted himself to pastoring his flock that gathered every Sunday to hear the power and conviction of his preaching. The Rev. Green had bid farewell to the mainstream and turned his attention faithfully to gospel that earned him an extraordinary eight Grammy awards. The 17 tracks on this album represent the cream of the crop of Green's golden gospel age. Spanning his 80s career are these landmark releases: 'The Lord Will Make a Way' (1980), 'Higher Plane' (1981), 'Where Love Rules' (1981), and 'He Is The Light' (1985). The songs bear his testimony of the long years he spent deferring his gospel gifts in the name of secular success. It's possible to take the soul man out of the preacher, the other way isn't so easy. Green proves this with Bill Withers' classic, 'Lean on Me,' Curtis Mayfield's 'People Get Ready' and 'God Bless our Love' and Diane Warren's 'Your Heart's In Good Hands.' For the fans, Al Green's 'Take Me To The River' with co-author Davin Seay holds to the promise that the singer and preacher has done a wonderous thing. Yes, it most certainly has.
Great Compilation.......2001-08-29
This album compiles the best of Al Green's gospel recordings. While there is some irony to Green recording gospel songs, the results cannot be disputed.
From People Get Ready to Amazing Grace, the standards are all here, as well as some gospel hits only gospel fans will recognize.
If you want a one stop shop for Green's gospel recordings, you won't go wrong with this compilation.
Another Gem From Al Green.......2000-04-16
What A VOice&A Legend.the songs here still sound Great. The Lord Will Make A Way is the cut.The Grooves Sound Great As His Powerful VOice.
Al Green Unstoppable.......2000-04-14
Even if he is singing gospel or soul or whatever Al Green knows how to soothe the soul with his amazing voice and rythms. As Al spreads the message of the Lord he takes his singing to new levels. This maybe one of his best albums ever.
A Good Place To Start.......2000-04-11
If this is the only album you're going to buy of gospel songs by the great Al Green then fine. No one compares for pure soulful singing from the heart. The choice of material is good considering it covers 25 years. The production, styles and arrangements reflect every trend over that time and that makes listening difficult. Almost every time Green went into the studio after 1977 it was with different musicians. For example, Willie Mitchell produced He Is The Light, and co-produced God Blessed Our Love, and brought in most of the band that played on earlier hits like Let's Stay Together. (It was when Al Green teamed up with Mitchell that his career first took off.) Other arrangements replace the horn section and add synthesizer, strings, and even an orchestra, like Ocean Blue (I'll Rise Again), and I Close My Eyes And Smile. Personally, I love the horns. If you can, start with the sources of these songs, like He Is The Light, and The Lord Will Make A Way. Then get I Get Joy, Soul Survivor, and Your Heart's In Good Hands. An excellent gospel hits collection, though hard to find, is Al Green Sings The Gospel, on Motown.

Customer Reviews:
Smooth and soulful.......2004-03-16
This cd is pretty much the same as the much more popular Greatest Hits. The only difference is that it doesn't have the tracks Belle, Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy), L-O-V-E (Love), and Full of Fire. It does include Take Me To the River, a song that isn't on Greatest Hits. Highly Reccomended
