If you think you've heard Handel's "Ombra mai fu" (known as his "Largo") so often, and in so many different arrangements, and sung by so many different voices, that you can no longer be moved or surprised by it, think again. This CD of Handel arias, mostly from his Theodora or the cantata La Lucrezia, ends with "Ombra mai fu," and as sung by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, it is so tender, so beautiful, so impeccably shaded, that you'll think you're hearing it for the first time. But that's only four of this disc's 67 minutes---a follow-up to Hunt Lieberson's extraordinarily successful CD of Bach cantatas. There's not a dull or disinterested moment to be heard anywhere. As the violated Lucrezia, Hunt Lieberson alternately rages against the man who raped her and turns her grief inward; the former is terrifying in its intensity, the latter makes us almost feel as if we're eavesdropping. The five arias for Irene, Theodora's friend, confidante, and the upholder of Christian beliefs are all magical prayers or statements of faith, and from Hunt Lieberson, they become real, with each word honestly conveyed and colored. The voice itself is unfailingly beautiful---warm, lush, never forced, agile when necessary---and her breath control is stunning. She is backed ideally by Harry Bicket and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the string soloists in the ensemble---the viola da gamba player, lutenist, etc.---are as gifted as she is. If you want proof that Handel was a great dramatist with a special gift for communicating emotion, all while listening to sublime sounds, this CD is a must. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars A Legendary Singer........2007-03-07

I simply don't have the heart to review Mrs. Lieberson's works.
If we call Ms. Bartoli a 'great' singer, then the description of 'legendary' more aptly depicts Mrs. Lieberson.
If ever a truly good artist lived, Mrs. Lieberson is one such.
The only singer that could be recalled singing in such style is Teresa Berganza; but still, they are different.
This is one of my favourite interpretators of Haendel. Having been 'treated' by those coloraturas of arias of Haendel's period by Ms. Bartoli and others, I find the singing of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson a great relief - at last, this is what Haendel would want it to be. And I equally enjoy the singing of soprano arias by Mrs. Lieberson - the timbre is warmer, but still with all the shimmer - so different from the dark mushy tones of other celebrated 'lyrical soprano' around.
Don't want to say more. Mrs. Lieberson's leaving last year is too heavy a news for me.

5 out of 5 stars Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's Bach: The mind of God revealed!!.......2007-01-06

These deeply felt performances of two of Bach's most moving cantatas show this transcendent singer's combination of emotional honesty and profound musicality, all combined to reveal the very mind of God through divine redemption from suffering. The disc is to be treasured even more in light of the Ms. Lieberson's recent untimely death from cancer. I'm an agnostic, but this music makes me envious of those who can believe. 5 out of 5 stars Glorious singing to treasure for decades.......2006-07-11

By any measure, America's Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is at least the equal of Italy's premier diva, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, although she does not have the same superstar status. It is difficult to recall past mezzos with clearer enunciation of English text, (as favoured in nine excerpts from Theodora), the richness of voice, displayed in full-throated fortissimo and sharply contrasted pianissimo of utmost delicacy, evokes fondest memories of the tragically doomed Kathleen Ferrier. Masterfully chosen to display every facet of Hunt Lieberson's consumate command of Handel's dauntingly difficult music, the disc's repertoire - recitatives and linkig arias from the operas Theodora and Serse, and the cantana La Lucrezia - is stunning. An unsung mezzo who makes the senses tingle!

5 out of 5 stars Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson (1954-2006), supreme Handelian.......2006-07-06

I have never heard a voice purer of tone, more flexible in phrasing, and so gorgeously produced in a homogeneous column of sound such as this artist in Handel's repertoire. It is very tastefully sung (unlike a certain person whose name begins with R and ends with enaaay Fleming) and so dramatically touching that one could not help but feel that this repertoire finally has found its instrument. And how sad it is to know that this instrument has passed away two days ago. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson died two days ago in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico of breast cancer. It is such a huge loss to the opera world, as she is an artist who is still experiencing the prime of her career. The voice is just so beautiful, the tone so pure, that I lament that we can no longer hear any great roles from this artist. She will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars The Stellar Hunt Lieberson.......2006-03-19

Simply put, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is one of the very best classical singers alive. She combines vocal elegance and purity with an emotional delivery that raises her above the crowd of technically proficient singers who just don't possess her depth of musical understanding or emotional commitment. Hunt Lieberson is a true artist who resists easy classfication except to say she is perfect in what she does.

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-10-31

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

5 out of 5 stars Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-04

Of George Frederick Handel(1685-1759) of England, born Georg Friedrich Handel of Germany, an English critic wrote, "He did bestride our musical world like a Colossus." The English passion for the oratorio is largely due to Handel, who was forced to find a new style of music with which to rekindle the interest of the public. For twenty years he had been presenting operas in London, but the last seasons had been increasingly unsuccessful as audiences took against attending staged works in Italian. The prior success of 'Esther' had launched 'oratorio' in London, and set Handel on a compositional path which was to prove his principal sphere of work for the rest of his life.
Handel's oratorios, more dramatic than any previously written, were like operas, save that they were given without scenery and costumes. Moreover, the variety of moods, the quality of the melodies and the composer's unique use of the colours of the orchestra makes the whole work marvellously attractive.
This disc contains an excellent variety of tunes from the various oratorios. Most are vocal in nature, but there are 2 that are strictly instrumental: Overture to 'Esther' in 3 movements and 'Martial Symphony and Destructive Was' from 'Solomon'. I particularly enjoyed the 2 duets with Susan Gritton (soprano) and James Bowman (countertenor): 'O fairest of 10,000 Fair' from 'Saul' and 'Welcome as the dawn of day' from 'Solomon'.
James Bowman does his usual correct interpretation of all the selections. His diction is not always clear due to his somewhat 'loud' and 'muffled' tone quality. BUT having said this, I must say that he is considered by most to be one of the great singers from the UK. I just simply prefer a more refined and clear 'delivery' such as Michael Chance renders. But we all have our own preferences and that's good for the world of music appreciation. Susan Gritton's voice is clear and her diction is excellent; and Robert King with the King's Consort give their usual fine accompaniment.
Just aside for those of you who enjoy the oratorio; there are 4 excellent 'live' performances on CD from the Maulbronn Monastery conducted by Jurgen Budday with superb singing, both soloistically and chorally. They are recorded by K&K Verlagsanstalt and are available on amazon.com

This CD contains some of the most beautiful music from Handel's oratorios and is performed here with style, warmth, brilliance, and authenticity. The sound quality of this recording is very warm and bright (good combination)!

5 out of 5 stars I agree with cotton hell.......2005-09-29

suicide notes is definately a heavier sounding album. the curse may be good and all but alex sounds a lot better on suicide notes. i like the string quartet, because it reminds me of when metallica did thier old songs from ride the lightning and such and let the symphony be in the background. i think its flipping sweet.

5 out of 5 stars a steaming pile of crap > Cotton's so called review.......2005-09-01

First off, I'm not a kid. I just don't want to sign up to put my opinion on here.

Cotton, wtf does a string quartet TRIBUTE album have to do with getting radio play? I'd seriously like to know. The Curse only did one thing for this band. It made them even better. The Curse is better than Suicide Notes mainly for 3 reasons...

      1. The production is much better and...
      2. Alex's screaming is also incredibly improved(seriously listen to some songs of of SN and then The Curse, and you tell me which sounds better)
      3. Brandon's melodic vocals are used more often. I know a lot of you "hardcore" kids will disagree, but music that is nothing but constant screaming in your ear is annoying. I think Atreyu does a much better job of switching between the screams and singing.

Now, I'm not saying that Suicide Notes is bad. I just think that The Curse is an improvement. I also like how you say that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. Well, I'm not going to say anyone who disagrees with me is wrong. They just have a different opinion. Anyway, I'm not really into instrumental albums that much....but I'll give it a 5 because of the band that is being revered.

5 out of 5 stars True fans will adore this materpiece........2005-04-05

First off, don't read Cotton Hell's review. If you lust atreyu's music (or if you are just a music lover in general) you will enjoy this album. These are all songs that were originally written and composed by atreyu! Yes, this is a tribute album. It is also an instrumental album. Personally I don't care if you like it or not. I just couldn't stand seeing just one review by an obvious simple-minded individual. Give it a listen and decide for yourself. That's why amazon.com gives you the listening options!

      Album Description

Most people think of Doris Day as a Hollywood girl-next-door who sang in her films. Posterity hasn't quite placed her where she belongs: among a handful of truly great singers - Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney - who made lyrics sound so personal and true that you forgot you were hearing a so-called "performance." James Cagney, Day's co-star in Love me or Leave Me, summed up her gifts: "The touchstone is simplicity, the simple line of performance, directly to you, uncluttered." In her best and worst films, in "The Comb and Paper Polka" or in the Rodgers & Hart score of the movie Jumbo, Day's utter genuineness never fails to touch the heart.

So it is in Karen Oberlin's jazz-inspired salute to Day. For the last few years, Karen has charmed cabaret and theater audience in and out of New York, her hometown. Were this 1945 - the year that Day brought Les Brown's orchestra to its peak of glory with her vocal on "Sentimental Journey" - swing bandleaders would be vying for Karen's services. But we're lucky to have her here now: a singer who, like Day delivers each song with warmth, honesty, and no frills; who radiates positive energy; and who makes you feel she's by your side, singing in your ear.

-- James Gavin, author of Deep in a Dream: The long night of Chet Baker

5 out of 5 stars My favorite singer.......2006-12-09

This is without a doubt my favorite CD ever. I have been fortunate enough to hear Ms. Oberlin perform live many times in NYC and this CD almost captures the beauty of her live performances.

Her rendition of How Are Things in Glocca Morra is the greatest version ever sung. She now owns that song!!

5 out of 5 stars Karen Oberlin Is Pure Velvet..........2005-02-18

Listen to the soft, dreamy, vocal styling of Karen Oberlin and it will take you back to a simpler, more romantic time. Listen, and you will be carried back to a little restaurant, a beautiful, vocalist at the piano, melting your heart. Many of these standards including, "I'll See You in My Dreams," are envisioned in the abstract...gathered in your memories...take the time to close your eyes and listen. Karen's performance is just so soothing. I listened to every facet of these classics, trying to find the dagger that will take me out of my "journey." It wasn't there. Oh yes, this is about Doris Day, or is it? I'm listening to Karen singing to me, right now. That's all that matters.

5 out of 5 stars The Return of Doris (or at least the next best thing).......2005-01-28

Probably because she first came to my attention as a movie star--and as the polar opposite of the screen sirens who stirred the hormones of a teen-aged boy--Doris Day somehow never reached me as a singer. It's been only in recent years that her voice, with its consistency, vibrancy, power and freshness, inerrant pitch and sublime musicality, has led me to collect her recordings. There's no question in my mind now that she was the real deal--a seasoned trouper who learned her craft in the '40's and could hold her own in front of any of the big bands--probably even without a microphone. There's an "edge" to every one of her performances, but nothing was forced. Moreover, as anyone who has seen her as Calamity Jane knows, she was the complete package: the voice, the persona (if that's an accurate term for so natural a presence), and the indomitable, unflagging spirit were all one.

Karen Oberlin's generous album (18 tunes!) is both a heartfelt homage to the great forebearer and a sparkling and highly personal set of performances that would do any present-day singer proud. She replaces Doris's tightly spinning vibrato with a smoother, more "contemporary," tone and employs more dynamic contrasts than Doris, allowing today's sensitive microphones to catch subtle shadings and vocal inflections. On "Que Sera," for example, the second "will be" in "whatever will be, will be" becomes not a repetitious iamb but an unexpected trochee in the artist's playful, dramatically effective emphasis on "will." On "It's Magic" she practically makes us associate the magical with the miraculous in her slight pause and then embracing of the critical word.

Credit, too, the always surprising arrangements of pianist Peter Firth and the sensitive accompaniment provided by two of New York's finest--David Fink (ironically, a favorite bassist of Andre Previn, who accompanied Doris on one of her most memorable albums) and Kenny Washington (also the preferred drummer of hard boppers like Johnny Griffin).

Oberlin includes the little-known jewels, such as R&H's "Nobody's Heart," alongside the '50's Hit Parade songs. But even the latter sound like staples in the Great American Songbook (newly minted ones at that) thanks to the inspired musicianship, good taste, and respect for the overseeing muse that is in abundant evidence throughout the project. The entire program is a labor of love, one that no listener (even someone who doesn't remember Doris) can't help but love.

      5 out of 5 stars A magnificent tribute album.......2003-02-06

This is one of three Doris Day tribute albums that I own. All are brilliant, but in different ways. None of them are straight copies and there are fewer songs that they share in common than one might expect. Karen's interest in Doris's music was really stirred when she heard some of the early jazzy recordings that Doris made with Les Brown. Karen firmly believes that Doris is not taken as seriously as she should be, so this album avoids anything lightweight. The style of the album is jazz, using piano, bass, drums, guitar, tenor sax and flugelhorn.

Whatever will be will be (Que sera sera) is given a completely different arrangement, created especially for Karen, which brings out the true meaning of the song. The result is impressive. Karen states that two her favorite albums are Duet and Day by night. Doris recorded Close your eyes twice, once for each of those albums. Karen's version opens this set. Yes and Nobody's heart are two other songs on Duet that Karen covered for this album, which also includes The night we called it a day from Day by night.

Secret love, I'll never stop loving you, It's magic and Sentimental journey are four famous classics here, all exquisitely covered by Karen. I'm not sure if How are things in Glocca Morra? really belongs in this collection, but I love that song as much as Karen does, and Doris did actually sing the song.

With eighteen tracks, all of them wonderful, this is a great tribute to Doris. It is my first Karen Oberlin album, but it certainly won't be my last.

It said it would be shipped within 2 weeks (which was bad enough. That was a month ago, and the recent update said it will not ship for another month. With that kind of aggravation, I should have just taped the damn song off the radio!

5 out of 5 stars One of My favorite singles!.......2002-07-01

I purchased this single a few months back. I never heard it until the song was probably old. I can't figure out why it never made a bigger impact in the US. I still listen to it. It's a real "feel good" song! You can hear it on "Summer Catch" starring Freddie Prinze Jr. at the end of the movie. The flip side is on Notting Hill.

4 out of 5 stars Good but bad.......2001-07-19

When you first listen to Ronan's, Lovin Each Day, you'll love it. It's a great formula to success, and probably will work. The problem is the album it supports. "Ronan" is full of many soft, terribly produced songs excluding the albums UK singles, "Life Is A Rollercoaster", "The Way You Make Me Feel" and this one. There are only a couple more tracks that are even worth listening to. So unless the album dramatically changes, just buy the single. That's all you need.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Pop Perfection!.......2001-07-08

This debut single from Ronan Keatings first American solo LP is just about as perfect a song as can be. Great hook, great production, and Ronan's distinctive and, yes, great voice. Unless they have dramitically changed the CD for the US release, this song is definitely the standout track on a rather sleepy album. This is a must have. Great B-side, When You Say Nothing At All, as featured in Notting Hill with Julia Roberts.

5 out of 5 stars Ronan is one of the greatest singers ever!.......2001-06-21

I couldn't resist buying this single as I anticipate the album coming out in summer. I have the UK album and it is the greatest. Boyzone and all their offspring (Ronan, Stephen Gately, Mikey Graham) are terrific always! This song is a winner! Comes with "When You Say Nothing At All" from "Notting Hill."
