If you enjoy gospel music -- YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET! Elvis' incredible voice is perfect for the soulful lyrics. Plus he picks up the tempo on many of them making them sound more like rock. All of my favorites are on this 3CD set - so I'm very very happy that I bought it. I highly recommend it!

Elvis sings gospel songs like no other! Some of the songs are a litte rough but you have to realize some songs were recorded in his home or at the studio while he is just playing around. The first disc is more of the released songs while some of the songs on the other CD's are live versions or unreleased versions with him laughing and talking. I thoroughly love this set!

Album Description

Revised with 2 significant tracks and artwork not previously included. When Elvis was growing up, the Presley family attended the First Assembly Of God church in Tupelo and subsequently in Memphis. Elvis's music was greatly influenced by attending these churches, but reglious music came to Elvis in many shapes and forms. Religious songs were often part of the repertoire for country stars on the Grand Ol' Opry - a syndicated radio Nashville broadcast that the Presley's almost always tuned into on Saturdays. As a teen, Elvis and his friends would sneak into churches in the black neighborhoods to catch the lively music of a different musical heritage. The welcoming congregation and uplifting sound opened up Elvis's understanding of the multiple facets of reglious music. ULTIMATE GOSPEL provides testament to Elvis's musical excellence and acknowledges the priceless contribution of the talented songwriters, musicians and producers involved.

His BEST single CD Gospel collection!.......2007-03-08

Very powerful performances and of course Elvis' voice is unmatched. He was made to sing Gospel and he puts his heart into every performance. The only Grammies he won were for his Gospel recordings. I know there are many Elvis Gospel collections available, but this one is his best single CD Gospel collection! To top this one you would have to get the 2 CD "Amazing Grace" or the 3 CD "Peace in the Valley" set.

This release is slightly different than the original "Elvis Ultimate Gospel" CD released a few years ago. On this version they added two songs "In My Father's House" and "An Evening Prayer" and deleted "Miracle Of The Rosary". I guess you could say this is the Protestant version of "Elvis Ultimate Gospel". If you like Gospel music and don't want to spend a lot of money on multi-CD releases, I highly recommend this CD.

I have never heard the Lord's praises sung more beautifully. Highly recommended collection. The live version of "How Great Thou Art" from 'Elvis In Concert' is a powerful take on the recorded version.

Did you know that Elvis Presley's four Grammy nominations (and two wins) for "Best Sacred or Inspirational Performance" were his ONLY Grammy nominations? Yes, it's true. Elvis' gospel recordings are among his most heartfelt performances. This two CD collection features all the songs from the Peace in the Valley EP, the His Hand in Mind LP, the How Great Thou Art LP, the He Touched Me album and most of his other gospel recordings; including a previously unreleased jam session between Elvis and the Stamps, which was filmed for the documentary Elvis On Tour. Great stuff, but I would recommend getting the three CD collection called Peace in the Valley: The Complete Gospel Recordings. That collection has everything from this collection, plus: the gospel songs from the Million Dollar Quartet jam session, several home recordings, four songs from Elvis movies, "Peace in the Valley" live on the Ed Sullivan Show, "Who Am I?", "Life", "I Got a Feelin' in My Body", two songs from Las Vegas rehearsals, the live version of "Help Me", the "Gospel Medley" from the 1968 Comeback Special, an off-the-cuff performance of "The Lord's Prayer" and the live version of "How Great Thou Art" from the Elvis in Concert television special. Whew! But if you don't want those songs, this collection will be good enough for you.

I loved all of Elvis's music; however, this is the most moving music I HAVE EVER HEARD. When he sings How Great Thou Art -- there isn't any artist that could come close to performing the song as he does. He is magnificient.

I didn't know whether I'd like "religious music" by Elvis, I'd only heard his movie tunes & of course the songs we all know - Hound Dog, etc. I bought this while persuing my personal religious journey, I like Elvis, figured this would be okay to get inspired with. Whoah!!! Elvis usually takes a song makes it his own, sometimes you don't recognize it. He doesn't do that with sacred music. What he does do is enter the Kingdom through song. He sings with intensity, longing & you do not doubt his own religious conviction. I especially love the gospel tunes of his southern upbringing. My favorite songs are Milky White Way & Lead Me, Guide Me. This is a lot of music on 2 cd's, well worth the money.

Soulful and inspiring.......2007-01-21

On this impressive collection of gospel songs Elvis is variously backed by the Jordanaires, Sweet Inspirations, Imperials and the Stamps Quartet. Chronologically the material ranges from songs recorded from 1957 to the early 1970s. They are mostly gospel classics but there are also later compositions like Put Your Hand In The Hand which was a pop hit in 1971.

Several styles are represented, from the slow and solemn hymns like Take My Hand Precious Lord, He Touched Me and I Believe to rhythmic uptempo tracks like Joshua Fit The Battle, By And By and Working On The Building with its lovely backing vocals. My personal favorites include the opening track Take My Hand, this version of Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, In The Garden and Where Could I Go But To The Lord.

I was a bit surprized to learn that Swing Down Sweet Chariot is an uptempo rock song, not the well-known Swing Low Sweet Chariot. The music is inspiring and soulful, revealing the devotional side of the magnificent king of rock and roll. The booklet contains an informative history of Elvis' gospel recordings by Brian Nevill and four photographs: full color one of the Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham, a black and white one of the Imperials plus the front and back pics of Elvis.

These songs sure bring back some good memories of singin in church. I remembered almost all of them and felt just as good singing them as I did as a teenager. To me Elvis Presley's gospel albums were the best of anything he did. whiling listening to him sing you can feel his love of gospel music coming through. As a teenager I had all his gospel albums but they got ruined when I moved from home. Great memories, great singing.

Elvis' first love.......2004-12-15

Gospel music was Elvis' first love and at the time of his discovery by the late Sam Phillips he was seriously considering joining the Songfellows, a gospel quartet, instead of signing to Sun Records. Throughout his career Elvis always used full gospel groups rather than backing singers, on stage and in the studio. At the same time that he was recording All Shook Up in January 1957, he was also recording songs for a gospel EP, Peace In The Valley, all of which were included on Elvis' Christmas Album later that year, and also appear here.
This collection also draws from three gospel albums that Elvis released: His Hand In Mine (1960), How Great Thou Art (1966) and He Touched Me (1971) and a couple of stray tracks including his hit single Crying In The Chapel, plus a medley of two songs he recorded and filmed at the Elvis On Tour sessions but which remained in the can until 1994.
Although a great rock singer, unlike his contemporaries, Elvis had the range to sing with an unmatched purity and sincerity on both devotional gospels and secular ballads and wasn't afraid to match his voice with the best gospel singers in the business, as this set ably demonstrates

first off: am not religious in any way whatsoever. believe in none of it.
having said that, I must add that Crying in the Chapel just might be my favorite Elvis tune of all time. and the rest of this CD ain't bad, either.
I Believe in the Man in the Sky...is another heartfelt number that Elvis gives his all to. There's others here as well. Nice collection--and you don't have to be religious, either--as far as I am concerned, to enjoy the CD.

Very moving!.......2006-05-01

While all of these songs have been previously released (several times), this collection tries to put a new twist on them. When I first saw the title I thought "Oh boy, yet another Gospel release." While I love Elvis' Gospel recordings, they have been repackaged and released several times, but this collection includes not just Gospel songs, but also secular songs meant to inspire the listener with their message. I have always thought that Elvis' "If I Can Dream" was one of the most moving (and underrated) songs of the late 60's and it gives the collection a strong lead-off. While this collection pales in comparison to his (numerous) greatest hits collections, this is a very good CD and not a bad buy if you don't already own most of the songs on here.

This five-disc set was the first release in BMG's effort to present Elvis's recorded legacy in a manner befitting the most important musical artist of his time. The strategy was simple--showcase, in chronological order, remastered versions of the King's 1950s output, from his sessions with Sam Phillips at Sun Studios (where they arguably invented the very notion of rock & roll) through his 1958 Army induction. Not everything Elvis recorded in the '50s was great (just as not everything he recorded in Hollywood was rotten), but there are dozens of tracks here that, quite simply, can make a bad day seem all that much better. Which surely still makes him the king of something. Suffice it to say this is one box set that lives up to its title. --Bill Holdship

Do yourself a favor and order this collection along with the 60's & 70's. There are songs you won't find on other CD's, and hear Elvis as a regular "guy" just makes you love him more.

Definitive Elvis '50s compilation.......2007-02-25

THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL: THE COMPLETE 50's MASTERS is a four-CD set, with a bonus disc containing alternate studio takes, and a lot of "live" Elvis recordings-- MGM Grand stuff, mostly. Except for the acetate of "That's When Your Heartaches Begins" and the few alternates, DISC 5 is fluff.

The other four CDs however are a treasure trove of the music that defined "The King." From his one-of-a-kind 1953 recording booth acetate of "My Happiness" to the 1958 fast version of "Ain't That Loving You Baby," this set documents Presley's recording career in chronological order and without gaps.

The 102-page long box-sized book includes sessionography, discography, color photos of all LP, EP and 45 picture sleeves, an excellent bio in easy to read print, and lots of other color and B&W photos. Sound quality is excellent. This one gets five stars for the biggest star of all!

The songs are great, but they're not listed on the CD itself-only on the case. It's frustrating to put the disks in a multi-disk changer and not know what songs are on the disk.

This is a comprehensive collection of Elvis' most influential work. Not every song is a classic, but there are many classics here. These are the recordings that shaped the foundation of Rock & Roll and popular music for a generation. A SUPERB GODSPELL COLLECTION........2007-05-03

ELVIS was always fond of godspell music so he would give 110 per cent when singing this type or religious music. This album, originally released in 1971, gathers songs from various sources: (There'll Be) Peace in The Valley, I Believe, It Is No Secret (What God Can Do) and Take My Hand, Precious Lord, were on an E.P. from 1957; Sing You Children comes from the "Easy Come, Easy Go" soundtrack (1966); "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "We Call On Him" from the 1967 recording sessions where Elvis was trying to reshape his music style; Who Am I? from the legendary 1969 Memphis sessions; and Let Us Pray, which includes one of the best rockin' bass lines from all Presley's songs, comes from the Change of Habit soundtrack, a godspell film itself. The King feels and gives himself enterely to all the songs as few artist could and can. The sound is great and at last the album comes with its original cover art, one of the best album cover of his discography. A Must!

Mellow Gospel.......2006-11-17

This is a budget collection of some of Elvis' mellow Gospel songs. The only uptempo song is "Sing You Children". This album was originally released in 1971 and was a minor hit on the Billboard album chart peaking at 69, but over the years it has sold more than 3 million copies and been certified triple Platinum by the RIAA. This CD includes two songs that made the Billboard singles chart, "Peace in the Valley" (which was a Top 40 hit in 1957) and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (which peaked at number 90 in 1968). It is not a bad collection and the price is cheap, but there are better Elvis Gospel collections available now. Unless you are a hardcore Elvis fan who has to own every album he released, I would recommend that you spend a few extra dollars on his "Ultimate Gospel" CD instead. You will get a lot more music.

Peacefulness.......2006-08-25

Great Elvis recording. All songs are recorded with the same cadence - the same basic beat. Mostly slow, yet with Elvis's trademark soaring voice. We played this CD over and over again as my father, an Elvis and gospel fan, lay dying. It brought peace to all of us. I highly recommend this particular recording for anyone going through a difficult time. Just listen to the samples and you'll see what I mean!

Great recordings.......2006-08-11

Elvis really shined when he record Gospel songs. He sang them from the heart. The songs on here are great, however it only includes 12 songs. Several other Elvis Gospel CDs are available that include more songs and would give you a better value for your money.

Great '70s Elvis!.......2007-04-01

This is an extremely underrated album, as were many of The King's releases from this era. There's country, and rock and roll, and even a little funk with "Talk In Your Sleep." Elvis is in fine form vocally, and the album is pretty well produced as well. I hope that maybe someday there will be new releases of these albums that are remastered and maybe with some musical or other enhancements to bring it up a notch. Unfortunately, many of Elvis' albums from the '70s were shoddily produced and thrown together without much care or thought at all. This was the Colonel at his worst. Another complaint is the cover. Just about every cover from the '70s had some kind of concert photo, and they looked very generic. Another suggestion would be to re-release these albums with covers that have the quality and imagination that would make even Elvis proud. It could be a way of re-introducing The King to a whole new fan base. Either way, this is still a solid album and an excellent addition to anyone's Elvis collection. Buy it!

Country crooning.......2006-09-06

This is not a bad album, however titling it after one of Elvis' great rock songs (Promised Land) may give people the impression that it is a rock album. It is not. "Promised Land" is the only real rocker on the album and it does include the pop hit "If You Talk In Your Sleep", but the rest of the songs are mostly 70's era country ballads. That doesn't make it bad, in fact several of them were hits on the US country charts, including the moving "Help Me". But buyer beware. If you are not into country, you will probably not be into this CD.

Elvis at his 70's best.......2006-03-31

This is my favorite Elvis album of the 70's. It kicks off with a rockin' rendition of the Chuck Berry hit "Promised Land". Elvis is at his natural best here, with a song that speaks to his personal experience. James Burton contributes some smokin' guitar solos, while drummer Ronnie Tutt anchors the locomotive rhythm section. "There's a Honky Tonk Angel (Who Will Take Me Back In)" is a country ballad, but Elvis sings it with the passion of a southern soul singer. "Help Me", written by country star Larry Gatlin, is contemporary gospel, and once again Elvis sings it with passion, the words obviously having special meaning for him at this time in his life. "Mr. Songman" follows at similar tempo, written by one of Elvis' backup singers, Donnie Sumner of Voice. "Love Song of the Year" is a sad, slow song, but once again Elvis is in excellent voice. "It's Midnight" is downright despondent, and Elvis' singing aches with the pain of his loneliness. The understated backing of his TCB band really enhances the performance. 'Your Love's Been a Long Time Coming" wipes away the gloom, with the glow of newfound love, another invigorated performance. The funky "If You Talk in Your Sleep" changes the mood once again, the TCB band is at their best here, and the string and horn arrangement adds to the feeling of danger and foreboding. "Thinking About You" is much lighter, Elvis finally putting some past memories behind him. The closing track, Waylon Jennings' "You Asked Me To", is carefree and fun, just a straight country tune, with some more nice picking from James Burton. These tracks represent the best of Elvis' '73 Stax sessions. He would only enter a studio proper once after this. "Promised Land" was one of his biggest selling singles of the 70's (#14 in winter 74/75), "If You Talk in Your Sleep" also made the top 20, and the album went all the way to #1 on the country albums chart. This CD is proof that Elvis still had "it" long after the critics had written him off.

One writer wrote a negative review that was obviously just not an Elvis fan. This was about the time sadly things in Elvis' personal life was getting worse his Divorce, his health ect., listening to this record you can tell this by his choice of songs mostly sad ballads, he never sang with more heart and emotion or with a stronger voice and is probably one of Elvis' best release of the 70's. In the song Help Me you can feel him singing and pleading with god for guidance. If your an Elvis fan or just a fan of good music this is an essential for you to own. Also the Rocker Promised Land the first song on the CD is great to. This is a must Have.

Ho-hum.......2004-07-31

An album titled "Promised Land" (a really great rock n' roll song by Chuck Berry) ought to be good, right?
Well, yeah, it ought to be. And Elvis Presley's rendition of the title track is okay, although Berry's is better.
But the rest of the album is just plain awful. I'm sorry, but it is. And I'm sorry mainly because I have actually paid money for these bland, indistinguishable ballads and greasy Vegas-styled love songs from the "Bierstuben" of Bavaria.

Now, Presley was usually a pretty good balladeer, but hearing him croon his way through nine more or less similar and very much less than memorable Julio Iglesias-like pop songs and overblown country songs is exceedingly boring.
I know that "real" Elvis fans feel that people like me, who don't consider Presley to be the greatest thing ever, should be barred from writing reviews (and possibly shot). But I don't hate Elvis Presley...in fact, I think his early Sun singles and his tough 1968 comeback performances are some of the greatest rock n' roll you'll ever hear.

This album, however, suffers greatly from an almost total lack of quality material, and those of us who aren't blown away by the very sound of Presley's (sometimes overly honeyed) voice will find very little of interest on "Promised Land". It seems like any songwriter with an ounce of talent must have been able to sell a handful of forgettable, saccharine pop songs to Presley around this time.
1 1/2 stars. Ew!
