At the tender age of 14, Stacie Orrico is poised to become an influential voice of her generation; her debut release Genuine not only unveils a dazzling voice, but it radiates her generation's slick, urban pop cool. Discovered at a Christian artist seminar in 1998, Stacie was signed to Forefront Records at age 12 and has been working with industry heads, fashioning a career since. The songs on this project speak honestly and practically to Stacie's peer group about issues of Christian living, and its urban flair fits right into the mix of mainstream radio. Competing side by side with the likes of Britney Spears, Stacie's first single, the groove-heavy "Don't Look at Me," points to Christ as the only true example of perfection and virtue. This infusion of God's truth into today's urban pop brings a refreshing perspective. --Israel Button --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Fans of Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera who want meatier lyrics with a bigger focus on spirituality-as opposed to the ever-exposed midriff-will be pleased with Stacie Orrico's debut Genuine. Even at 14, Orrico has a mature sound. Some tunes are lightly peppered with an occasional Mariah Carey whistle voice while others have a Janet Jackson edge similar to Rhythm Nation. Producers Tedd T., Mark Heimermann and Michael-Anthony (Mooki) Taylor should be commended for their attention to detail as... read more --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars Genuinely Great.......2007-01-20

When Stacie Orrico entered my musical palette, I was forever changed. At last, here was a fresh, young singer with an amazing voice and a musical sound that was exactly what I wanted to hear. Although my tastes have dramatically changed over the years, Orrico's debut album of silky-smooth R&B grooves and pop anthems that rivals the best teen pop of the day continues to make its way to my CD player from time to time.

The first impact Orrico makes is her voice. It is amazingly strong and assured for a then 14-year old, with a bold, gospel-like vibrato that fits well with the soulful production. Songs like "Ride" and "With A Little Faith" are cookout-friendly jams, while "So Pray" and "Genuine," are certain to induce feet-tapping from the most fickle of listeners. Coupled with clean, spiritual lyrics that are parent-approved, Stacie Orrico's "Genuine" is a must-have.

this cd was given as a gift and it was a big hit!

5 out of 5 stars the blues and nothing but the blues!.......2003-12-06

If you like the blues, look at this lineup of artists. There are no bad songs on this 59 minute CD. "Genuine Houserockin' Christmas" is one of the best CD's I've heard for a long time. It's worth more than 5 stars, that's for sure. I know I'll play this one year around. Koko Taylor is awesome. For Zydeco fans, there is even "Zydeco Christmas". Lonnie Brooks is fantastic. I think my favorite is "A Bluesman's Christmas", a song about a bluesman who is on the road and can't be home. I would say a couple songs are not what you'd play for your fiance's parents when they came to visit. Great party music.

Did you ever had the experience of buying a CD by your favorite artist and find out that they've switched their style to a traditional Christmas style? These artists are playing the kind of music they play best... THE BLUES!

Born in 1963, Cyrus Chestnut has become for his generation what Oscar Peterson was for his: the crowd-pleasing-est of mainstream pianists. Like the mighty Oscar, though with less superhuman speed, the genial Cyrus possesses consummate technical facility, swings hard, is most comfortable in a trio, enjoys the presence of a guitarist and in his mission to entertain sometimes plays play down to the audience. "Genuine Chestnut," Chestnut's first Telarc album, does boast an easy-listening treatment (as if there can be any other kind) of the old Bread ballad, "If." And, keyed to a gentle, subtly shifting reading of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," the performance is unusually restrained. A timely treatment of Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin,'" one of three cuts featuring the excellent guitarist Russell Malone, is surprisingly bereft of New Orleans style. But with its soulful thrusts, balletic flourishes, and unabashedly warm-spirited playing, the music grows on you. Backed by bassist Michael Hawkins and drummer Neal Smith (and, most of the time, percussionist Steve Kroon), Chestnut crafts original tunes that deal in gospel, funk, and blues without ever calling attention to the cards they're holding. --Lloyd Sachs

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Nut Man's winter soundtrack.......2006-06-27

A mostly mellow outing, Genuine Chestnut nonetheless captures the many moods of this versatile pianist. Drawing from the wellsprings of jazz, gospel, classical, pop and soul, the Baltimore native displays impeccable taste even as he funkifies himself on "Baby Girl's Strut," swings on the straightahead opener "The Brown Soldier" or races through "Mason Dixon Line." Guest guitarist Russell Malone augments the basic trio at times, taking the lead on a beautiful rendition of the old Bread ballad, "If," and a subtle stroll through Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin." But this is really Chestnut's show, and he places a premium on precision and feeling. His originals are never over the top, but are consistently tuneful, light and approachable. His solos are explosive but contained on the upbeat numbers, spacious and lyrical on the slower pieces. This is not groundbreaking stuff, just the sound of acoustic jazz present as good as it gets. --Jim Newsom

3 out of 5 stars Too traditional.......2006-04-26

Roly-poly Cyrus Chestnut has played with Christian McBride and Terrence Blanchard, and he took some creative chances with James Carter while playing keys on Gold Sounds, an album of jazzy Pavement covers. But *Genuine Chestnut* represents a return to the Nut Man's more hidebound roots. A ballad with bossa nova flourishes, "Ellen's Song" - written for Chestnut's wife - is one highlight, and in "Little Girl's Strut," listeners can visualize Chestnut's daughter Jazzmin swaying to the congas. "Mason-Dixon Line," with its upbeat stride runs, recalls Art Tatum - and it's the only time here that Chestnut is joined solely by his two sidemen, drummer Neal Smith and bassist Michael Hawkins (whose solo shines on Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'"). But "Eyes on the Prize" and "Through the Valley" over-emphasize Steven Kroon's special percussion effects, and neither track develops its ideas' potential. Less adventurous than works by trio leaders like Brad Mehldau or even Bill Charlap, *Genuine Chestnut* is still recommended for fans of gospel- and Latin-inflected piano jazz.

Album Description

This terrific twofer pairs one of the 4 Seasons' best albums with the album that was definitely their most ambitious! The 1966 Philips release Working My Way Back to You takes its title from the monster hit that leads the album off, and hit #50 on the charts, while 1969's Genuine Imitation Life Gazette was the group's psychedelic answer to Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds, with a big contribution from NYC singer-songwriter Jake Holmes, most famous for penning the Led Zep anthem "Dazed and Confused".

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Genuine is great. Working my way back, not good.......2007-07-05

Would never have bought the working my way back part of the cd, except it is bundled together with "Genuine".

Genuine Imitation Life Gazette is still worth it. One of the best "parodies" around, with some interesting music.

4 out of 5 stars Great package but a bit over produced.......2007-05-26

I have been a Four Seasons fan for YEARS, but have never had the opportunity to hear the complete Genuine Imitation Life Gazette. It was hyped up to be the Seasons version of Pet Sounds (Beach Boys) and Sgt. Pepper (Beatles). I think it was this hype that heightened my expectations, and even though some songs are good, it doesn't quite live up to those expectations. Don't get me wrong; the album is filled with lavish productions and melodies, but it seems to be all over the place. Kind of like an over-production.

That is basically my only critisism of this item. Being the Four Seasons, and being the re-release of one of their greatest hyped-album (along with the fantastic Working My Way Back To You), this is an easily earned 4-star package.

5 out of 5 stars Two Respectable Albums on One CD.......2007-04-28

I bought this because I was aware of the The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette for years. It flopped. It was their ambitious attempt at psychedelia. This is what Lillian Roxon said about it in her Rock Encyclopedia..."They have recently released a "modern album" complete with protest, symbolic lyricism, and complex arrangement and orchestration. It was not well received." Does that make it a bad album? No, it's excellent. Yes, they were channelling the Beach Boys on much of the album and Mrs. Stately's Garden is not my favorite track. However, it is still excellent. Mostly, the album is about a marriage that falls apart, child visitation etc., probably things Frankie Valli was going through. It is a great mix. If you can find this CD with the bonus tracks (like the heavily psychedelic Electric Stories) buy that one instead. It was only out on CD briefly. Also, the liner notes are excellent, and John Lennon told Bob Gaudio that he loved The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette. IMHO that's a good recommendation. The other CD in this two-fer is Working My Way Back to you. It's very good. These are two cd's that you need to learn, you can't just listen to it once and love it - they have to be listened to repeatedly, but your effort will be rewarded. I am glad I bought this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Happy this is in print.......2007-01-20

Working my way back to you is worth every penny you pay for this package. The "gazette" was not one one for me, despite owning the LP. I'm a big fan of the 4 seasons. Have close to 20 of their LP's. Saw them in concert.
I'm glad working my way back to you became available.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Modest Opinion.......2005-10-22

This was the first pig cd that I bought. Overall I am very happy with it. The biggest dissapointment were the lyrics and instrumentals. The lyrics just seem unintelligent and rushed.

1. Prayer Praise & Profit
This is a nice catchy tune. Th lyrics are of course lame. It starts off with a cool orchestral intro. Then a drum beat kicks in. The whole song is basically this drum beat with some electronics in the background. Very cool song. 7/10
2. Riot Religion & Righteousness
Just by looking at the title of the song you can tell his lyrics are pretty bad. It is a techno song with some guitar. The song is Raymond basically saying something very repetitive in a robotic voice. The music in the song is very good though, and the robotic voice adds a lot to it. 7/10
3. Salambo
Easily one the best songs on the cd. Has a cool mambo theme throughout the song. 8/10
4. Whore
Slow song, mundane lyrics, repetitive music.
4/10
5. Flesh Fest
Another very good song. I love raymonds singing in this song.
8/10
6. Black Brothel
Lame instrumental
1/10
7. Disrupt Degrade & Devastate
Very good blend of rock and techno. Has a nice chorus with a female.
7/10
8. F.O.M.
Mixes between fast metal and slow techno. Interesting is a word for it.
6/10
9. A Fete Worse Than Death
I had no idea what a fete was so I looked it up. It's a party. I don't like the title or lyrics. The music is very cool and it's my favorite song on the cd.
8/10
10. Cry Baby
Very unique tune of a woman speaking in japanese. Not a whole lot of "music" though.
4/10
11. Inside
THIS IS THE LONGEST AND WORSE INSTRUMENTAL EVER CREATED
14 MINUTES!
0/10
12. Saved Remix
Very cool remix of saved.

2 out of 5 stars Raymond Watts' worst since Praise The Lard.......2005-07-26

I don't know how people can say that this is a great record with songs like Salambo, Whore, and Flesh Fest...they suck...BAD! I loved Sinsation and Wrecked, but this album carries the same forced, cheesy feel that made The Swining and Praise the Lard stinkers. The bad instrumentals(black brothel), the even worse spanish-influenced songs(Salambo), and the mediocre songs(Flesh Fest). There is no way this is his best work, and you're crazy if you think it is. If you like the awesome heavy industrial feel of Sinsation and Wrecked, then I recommend you get his latest album called Pigmartyr released under the band name WATTS...It's the same guitar-driven industrial, but the songs are the best things he has made...totally recommended. You should check out the KMFDM albums NAIVE, ATTAK, and WWIII. They have Raymond Watts' doing what he does best on songs like Blackball, Flesh, and Preach/Pervert....Those songs are some of his best...seriously. Of course this is all my opinion, but I recommend skipping Genuine American Monster, as well as Praise The Lard and The Swining.

5 out of 5 stars It's a good thing they brought it to the U.S.!.......2005-02-05

This was first released in Japan, so it wasn't sure whether they were going to release it in the U.S. or not. It's a good thing they did, because this is one of Pig's more solid efforts. Plus, they added an extra track to the U.S. edition. This is the epitome of techno rock, with Guenter Schulz from KMFDM and Slick Idiot adding some assistance.

1. Prayer, Praise, and Profit - 10/10 - The best opening for any song EVER, a masterful orchestrated opening builds up to a heavy guitar rift. The chorus is simply fantastic. Put simply, this song is SWEET.
2. Riot, Religion, and Righteousness - 10/10 - An electronic song with some guitars. Raymond Watts sings in a robotic voice, except during the chorus, which is the best chorus ever made for a song. If you can't understand the lyrics, go to www.raymondwatts.com and find them out. You don't want to miss out on them.
3. Salambo - 9/10 - Bordering on Tango, this industrial Mariachi mix might turn hardcore Industrial fans from listening to it, but it's quite a treat. You'll be in a for a pleasant surprise.
4. Whore - 9/10 - Basically, the lyrics are just a lot of Pig's songs/album titles thrown together. The music is very slow and low-key, but it builds up to a rocking electronic chorus.
5. Flesh Fest - 10/10 - Mainly a rock song, but with some Jazz elements, and a Tango-like keyboard near the end. Watch out of the lyrics, some of them are quite offensive.
6. Black Brothel - 9/10 - A really short instrumental, somewhat of a rehash of Transceration from Sinsation, with some piano added in.
7. Disrupt, Degrade, and Devastate - 10/10 - Probably the most famous song off here, this had its own single. With lyrics attacking religion, awesome guitars, and skillfully placed electronic work, you can't go wrong.
8. F.O.M. - 10/10 - Just so you know, the guitar is SUPPOSED TO SKIP in the beginning. There's nothing wrong with your CD player. Anyway, most of the music is very quiet techno, but the chorus has some of the best heavy guitar on the album. Like most of the songs on this album, the chorus is amazing.
9. A Fete Worse Than Death - 9/10 - This and Salambo are the catchiest songs on the album. The cool thing about this song is that samples from a movie are used, and they actually don't sound out of sync with the chorus. This has the best electronic and guitar work on the album. The only reason it doesn't get a perfect 10 is because Raymond Watts doesn't sing the chorus. Also, a female singer gets a solo near the end of the song, and her singing is terrible. She sounds like a horrible knock-off of Patti LaBelle.
10. Cry Baby - 2/10 - It has good percussion near the beginning, but that's the only good point about this song. The vocals are done by Raymond Watts, they're spoken word vocals done by some random guy talking in Spanish. The song is very creepy, don't play this with the lights out.
11. Inside - 9/10 - A very long instrumental, it also has a New Age feel to it like Transceration from Sinsation or Watt from A Stroll in the Pork. It also has some jungle-like drums near the end. The only downside is that it's too long, clocking in at over 10 minutes.
12. Saved (Locust Remix) - 10/10 - A remix of Save Me from Wrecked, this is the U.S.-only bonus track, although it's also on Prime Evil. It's just as good as the original, although the vocals are distorted, they sound cool that way. The vocals are also chopped up and re-sequenced to actually create a rhythm. The main lyrics and chorus are still sung normally, though.

OVERALL SCORE: 8.9/10
CONCLUSION: Sadly, this is Pig's last album. Raymond Watts is now in a band called Watts. However, this is fairly recent, and won't go out of print anytime soon (hopefully). Still, you should get a copy to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Raymond Watts-An industrial god.......2004-03-17

Simply another masterpiece from the very talented Raymond Watts-Lord of Lard. This CD is one of my personal favorites. Prayer,Praise and Profit is a glorious start to this CD with Riot,Religion, and Righteousness following behind. Salambo is hard to grow on,but it is a great song otherwise. Whore would have to be my favorite on this CD-slow but very powerful.I recommend this CD to any KMFDM fan who has heard from Raymond about PIG and would like to see how great PIG is. Don't forget to pick up Sinsation!

Genuine Houserockin' Music II
Alligator ALCD 102

There are five Genuine Houserockin' samplers, and each is worth owning. This one, from 1987, lasts 67-minutes, and contains four additional tracks over its cassette edition. The 16 songs were originally released between 1980 and 1987. There are no previously un-released cuts. Only five of these treasured artists remain Alligator's current roster.

With wicked finger pickin' and pluckin', Albert Collins lays down a signature tune that features a Texas shuffle. Big Twist's deep, assertive voice and the Mellow Fellows' dangerous horns create a soulful party. "I'd Rather Go Blind" is still regularly performed by Koko Taylor. On this absolutely brilliant version, her throaty vocals roar. Slide master, Lil' Ed, is better when experienced in concert. On "Pride and Joy", his antics get distorted. Little Charlie and The Nightcats have just released their ninth Alligator record. Their West Coast style blues feature Rick Estrin's classic harp and Charlie Baty's fat-toned guitar. Back in '87, being "T.V. Crazy" was their greatest concern. Witty lyrics that refer to shows such as: Love Boat and Dallas, give away the song's era. Prior to Mavis Staples, Johnny Winter was Alligator's greatest international superstar. He uses his slide guitar like an axe grinder on "Mojo Boogie". Lonnie Brooks combines many styles into his bayou music. His friendly, yet intimidating, vocals have a voodoo presence, while his guitar emits more passion than multiple rock guitarists combined. Thanks to Michael Coleman, "Part Time Love" is from the funkiest era of James Cotton's long-standing career. Long before Joss Stone butchered "The Chokin' Kind", two of America's roadhouse kingpins (Roy Buchanan and Delbert McClinton) created the definitive version. New Orleans piano master, Professor Longhair, creates a party out of personal disaster. "The Dream" is taking from Showdown. It was recently chosen, by GuitarOne Magazine, among the Top 200 greatest guitar recordings of all time. Lonnie Mack performs a soft rock ballad which is now a classic. However, the music's pace didn't have to be reduced in order to be meaningful and heartfelt. In fact, almost all the disc's songs possess these qualities which will move you as a listener. This is why this collection is so essential.

As with the other Genuine Houserockin' Music collections, this CD is an advertisement for the label. The main goal is to get you hooked on them and their artists. Detailed liner notes contain biographies on all featured artists. The downside is there are no songwriter credits or studio musicians listed. You'll experience all types of blues on this vibrant sampler. Best of all, the music genuinely is the blues, or a very closely related cousin. How is a sampler CD worthy of a perfect score? The answer is simple, and it is based entirely on quality and value.

5 out of 5 stars Love this cd!.......2007-04-28

This cd has a timeless feel to It. It reminds me of the old tunes I grew up listening to.I hear Marvin,Curtis,Prince,George and Sly's Influnce. I just got over to the cd and haven't pulled from my player yet.Love the tune 'heaven' and I hope that this guy has a long career. BUY THIS CD! YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED!

4 out of 5 stars A retro rare-groover?.......2007-03-11

For over a decade, Brit-rock has proclaimed its green credentials by recycling at least 50% of its material and repackaging it as if it were completely original.
By contrast, contemporary Afro-American music's sample culture fetishises reconditioned old licks and beats, while offering much more genuine novelty.
Joseph "Amp" Fiddler is the exception who proves the rule.
A Detroit veteran of George Clinton's p-funk unit, his second solo album, but for a cod-ragga toast on "I Need You", could well have teleported in from the mid-1970s.
Referencing Gil Scott-Heron in the jazz-funk meditation "Right Where You Are", August Darnell in the zoot-suited "If I Don't", Marvin Gaye in "Hustle", Sly Stone in the bone-dry click-track drums, p-funk in the rubber bass and synths, and Shuggie Otis in the spare, stoned melodiousness, Amp also boasts a fine, smoky singing voice and a way-cool pimp hat.
If Jamiroquai could concoct a hit career out of a lot less, why not this retro rare-groover?

4 out of 5 stars The Prince of the organic vibe is back, strong !!.......2006-09-20

Amps second album is actually stronger than his debut (great as it is) the tracks laid here are for the serious organic soul fan "Faith" is a great funky foot stomper with a dirty low B-line. "Right where you are" and the strange but superb sounding "if i don't" are all dancerfloor grooves. The awesome track titled "hustle" has a very Curtis sounding string ladened back drop, But if you like your ballads there is one here for you titled "Heaven" ft Stephanie McKay on vocals plus guitarist bluey (incognito front man) whose laced the track just wonderful throughout, and there harmonies blend just perfectly together & i feel in a short period of time it could be one of my favorite tracks on the album. Many people don't really appreciate the impact this man has had and continues to have on todays music scene, for instance Jaydee learned his trade from Amp Fiddler, this guy executes that earthy sound to damn perfection, there ain't no stand out tracks so to speak bcuz it just runs effortlessly throughout the LP, but if you like the following arists Dwele, V, Eric Roberson, peven everett, omar etc.. you will love this album, so one word to you guy's .......... purchase !!!

4 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2002-03-14

Once again these guys have pulled it off again! I didnt think
that the "Other Side" could be topped! The cover soundtrack
"Ratty Shoes" starts off with newcomer Michael Boyce singing
lead vocals and will bring your heart right back to Ireland. From Paul Moore's "Jig Junk" to the insanely talented John McGroary ( and I truely meant that) on button acordian with "Clearmountain Aire" gets your feet in steppin gear! But you
have to see these guys "live", unbelievable energy is put out
for every show. Whether these guys are jumping and kicking to every tune their drummer Mike O'Callahan is beating his heart
out with those ever so RED sneakers! But this is truely heart at
work with lyrics by Blackthorn! Great work guys! Buy this CD and
listen to great lyrics performed by a band that has proven
themselves once again!

5 out of 5 stars This album is a complete package.......2002-02-05

When I first saw Blackthorn, it was in their natural habitit, on stage. A great, jumping pub act, I was promptly hooked on these Philadelphia Irish rockers. Their first album, The Other Side, was very good, but lacked the polish of a major recording artist. The followup, Ratty Shoes, suffers from none of the occassional awkwardness of that first record. The production is first rate and the songs are up to the increased scrutiny. From the bouncy pub stompers like the title track, to the traditional button-accordian instrumentals, to the reflective ballads like "The Border", this album is a complete package that truly defines Blackthorn as a band ready to break into the mainstream. The balance between rock and roll and traditional Irish folk sounds is just right, with neither overwhelming the other. Tying it all together is Paul Moore's passionate, homespun vocals. Black 47 and The Saw Doctors need to make room, because Blackthorn have just joined them on the top step of the Irish Rock genre.

5 out of 5 stars THEY DID IT AGAIN!!.......2002-01-14

WHAT A WONDERFUL MIX OF MUSIC FROM THE BOYS OF BLACKTHORN! I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THEIR LAST, ORIGINAL CD, "THE OTHER SIDE" AND WONDERED IF THEY COULD TOP IT.........AND THIS COLLECTION IS EQUAL TO THE TASK! FROM THE FUN-FILLED "JIG JUNK" TO THE HEART-FELT LYRICS OF "THE BORDER" , THESE LADS ARE TRULY, ORIGINAL!

5 out of 5 stars Blackthorn does it again ..........2001-12-27

The lads from Philly & Ireland have done it again. Although I have long been waiting for the new release, I was apprehensive that they wouldn't be able to top their spectacular original debut, The Other Side. But the boys have proven me wrong - quite simply, this album is fantastic.

From Moore's magical storytelling, to the Boyce Brothers' pop/country tunes, McGroary's reels, Seamus Kelleher's' electrifying guitar work and Mike O'Callaghan keeping the beat (and writing a new tune), this record does not have a single weak spot on it. Personally, I have always been a huge fan of Paul Moore's songwriting, but there are no slouches in this band.

Very highly recommended for fans of Celtic music, pop music and/or country music. And if you can, catch the boys live - it's something to see.

    Album Description

Nedelle exists somewhere between Ella Fitzgerald and Everything But the Girl, with vocal harmonies reminiscent of The Shirelles. At times tender and romantic, at others lovelorn and drained, and sometimes downright sexy, Nedelle's music mixes classic blues sentiment with modern pop stylings. Combining jazz melodies and lush production, the result is something new and quite obviously special.

Republic of Two is Nedelle's first album. It features eleven of the first songs she's ever written, which she produced and archived with vintage audio gear of the highest fidelity. Here her voice comes across as intimate and sincere, mirroring her real-life personality. The music is sparse when she whispers of isolation, and the arrangements are emphatically layered when she sings of losing love and affection. Every song hints at the serious introspection that Nedelle must have undergone during her 22 years, but none of the songs seem feigned or melodramatic. Rather, there's a maturity in them that belies her limited life experience and is sure to engage those of all ages, without limitation.
