I Will Follow You

About the Artist
As the driving force behind The Moody Brothers, Dave Moody has led the family band to national recognition and international acclaim. Along the way, the group earned two Grammy Award Nominations and three International Country Music Awards as this trio of brothers took their Carolina based folk, gospel and rocking country music to audiences around the world. The Moodys have performed often at such distinguished venues as the Grand Old Opry in Nashville, TN, the White House in Washington, DC, Wembly Arena in London, England and Disneyland Paris in France, where they have been a featured act annually since 1992. Now, Dave Moody is stepping away from the group momentarily to present his first solo album, "I Will Follow You" which he will support with concert appearances throughout the United States and Europe. Recorded and mastered in Nashville and Charlotte, "I Will Follow You" features a varied collection of modern musical styles, all showcasing Dave's songwriting talents and unique vocal style.
Going solo is not necessarily new to Dave. Before The Moody Brothers' first visit to Europe in 1985, he was featured on a six week major tour of Great Britain in the fall of 1984 with good friend and fellow North Carolinian George Hamilton IV. During this sold out series of concerts, Dave established a strong audience base from which he and his brothers launched their international careers. "I remember the overwhelming response and love the English audiences showed me on my first trip there," he says, "It was truly amazing. People there really love American music."
All the Moodys got their start in the music business during the late '60s, singing gospel music on their parents' local television show in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dave made his first public appearance on that show in 1966 at age 4. Their father Dwight L Moody, Jr. was a fiddle playing Methodist Minister who taught his sons to play many instruments. "Music was everywhere in my family," Dave says. "It was our life and livelihood."
At 16, Dave led a folk band that performed at major festivals and theme parks throughout the Carolinas, including Carowinds and Tweetsie Railroad. While attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, he developed an educational program for elementary age audiences that taught American history through folk music at schools throughout the state. After college, he taught US History at Independence High School in Charlotte for several years.
But Dave's teaching career would be cut short as The Moody Brothers began performing widely throughout the Carolinas and recording a series of country music albums for Lamon Records. Their third album, Cotton Eyed Joe, sliced through massive competition in 1985 to win a Grammy Award Nomination for "Best Country Instrumental Performance."
Suddenly the Moodys were the talk of Nashville and the entire music industry, being nominated in the same category with country giants Chet Atkins, Ricky Skaggs, Doc Watson and the Whites. "It was the phone call that changed our lives," remembers Dave. On the heals of their nomination, the Moodys begin making guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and performing in Europe at music festivals in Switzerland, England, Poland, Italy and Czechoslovakia. Four years later, The Moody Brothers received their second Grammy Award Nomination for an album cut entitled The Great Train Song Medley.
By then, the brothers had truly made a name for themselves in Europe. In 1986, the globe-trotting Moodys scored an International Country Music Award nomination as "Most Promising International Act." (Note: The International Country Music Awards are voted on by readers of twelve country music magazines from different countries in Europe.) Then, they promptly lived up to that promise by being named ICMA's "Most Popular International Trio" for the next three years, winning over the Gatlin Brothers, the Whites, and the trio of Dolly Parton/Linda Ronstadt/Emmylou Harris.
In 1988, The Moody Brothers traveled again to Czechoslovakia, this time to record the album Friends with the popular Czech group Country Beat. Almost three years prior to the unification of Europe, this was the first time that an American country group had been asked to record an album in a Soviet-bloc country. This historic album was co-released by Supraphon Records throughout Eastern Europe and Lamon Records International in the US and Western Europe. Friends went on to earn a Gold Disc Award for selling more than 200,000 copies and also earned The Moody Brothers and the project's engineers and producers Golden Reel Awards from the Ampex Corporation - a first for a Czechoslovakian record release.
Closer to home, The Moody Brothers served as national spokesmen for the "Take Pride In America" campaign from 1987 to 1992. With their involvement in this public awareness effort, they performed twice at the White House - once for President Ronald Reagan and again for President George Bush, who had utilized the Moodys' talents frequently during his 1988 Presidential campaign. They made regular guest appearances on TNN, PBS and other nationally televised programs.
In 1992, once again Europe became The Moody Brothers' focus, as Dave and his brothers moved their entire families to France to open Disneyland Paris as part of the cast of the immensely popular Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The Moodys worked with Oscar nominated music composer George Fenton (Gandhi, Cry Freedom, The Fisher King, Groundhog Day, Dangerous Liaisons, Multiplicity, Ghostbusters III, You've Got Mail) as together they developed authentic American folk themes to use as part of the musical entertainment of the show. In addition, the brothers also perform their own nightly headline concert series to "standing room only" crowds at Disney Village. From 1992 until 1999, The Moody Brothers performed for over ten million guests! And the shows still continue...
In 1994, the Moodys were featured artist on the very popular compilation CD Country Music for Families released throughout Europe on Disneyland Records. In 1995, they were included on another very popular country music compilation CD entitled Country Express which was released throughout Russia, the Czech Republic and other Eastern European countries. On this record, The Moody Brothers were featured with Nashville recording artists Merle Haggard, Wynonnia, Tim McGraw, Hank Williams Jr, Sawyer Brown and others.
In 1997, Sound and Media (part of Richard Branson's Virgin Group of Companies) released a collection of The Moody Brothers' music entitled The Line Dance Album. The timing of this release was perfect has the American line dance phenomenon had just reached the British audience. The next year, The Line Dance Album II was released along with a four CD box set The Line Dance Collection which featured seventy tracks by the Moodys. This dance series earned The Moody Brothers another Gold Disc Award with sales in the United Kingdom reaching over 100,000 units in 1999. In the summer of 1999, Word Records (UK) released six tracks featuring George Hamilton IV with The Moody Brothers.
After six years of living abroad, with a longing for home, family and friends, Dave and his family moved back to America . He built a successful recording facility in Charlotte, NC but immediately sold it to Def Jam Records recording artists Devante (of the popular rap group Jodeci) in late 1997. Dave continued to perform at Disney by commuting back and forth to Paris for a two year period, but in 1998 stopped his regular appearances in France. Today, "The Moody Brothers" are still performing at Disneyland Paris although the show now features a combination of American and European musicians selected by Disney and the Moodys.
In the summer of 1998, Dave began leading contemporary worship and music services at Calvary Church in Charlotte. In July 1999, Dave - along with Calvary Associate Pastor Dana Bryan, led a sixteen member team on a two week musical mission trip to Spain. Working in connection with World Link, their group performed contemporary Christian and positive country music in English and Spanish throughout northern Spain. Looking back on this trip, Dave says "I've always enjoyed knowing that what I do through music can actually change or influence someone's life forever - but this trip truly altered my perception and appreciation for performing and helped me realize how I can best utilize my talents to bring people into the awareness and hopefully the acceptance of Christ in their life."
"I know God has truly blessed my life," reflects Dave. "At every step of my career, when one door seemed to be closing, we'd trust God to show us the way...and another opportunity would present itself. I'm excited about all the possibilities that lie ahead. I feel God has truly led me to this point in my life - opening and closing doors at every turn."
Dave Moody knows the world landscape of music. He's been there, lived it, been a part of it and watched it grow! From his deep family traditions to the anticipation of what lies ahead, Dave's music career has never stopped growing - and who knows what's coming next!

Customer Reviews:
Arleen Auger and Dalton Baldwin-Love Songs.......2007-01-29
A lovely collection -very varied. Arleen Auger has a beautiful voice and Baldwin's accompaniment is wonderful. The 3rd track, by Jayme Ovalle, is, as it says in the accompanying notes, bewitching, and is actually the reason I bought the CD.
Voice of experience.......2006-01-28
There isn't much I can add to the praise bestowed on this album by earlier reviewers. I do think though that a special poignancy is undeniable since Auger's voice, while still beautiful, clearly is not that of a young singer. Her maturity makes her interpretations of these love songs all the more touching. I've probably played this CD a dozen times through the years, far more than any other in my collection. It remains consistently and deeply satisfying.
Auger at her best.......2005-04-26
This is a disc that I recommend to my graduating seniors/graduate students who are pursuing a graduate degree or career options in Vocal Performance.
From the standpoint of technique, Auger is practically flawless---"harsh" is not a word I equate with Ms. Auger's singing. She and Dalton Baldwin are impeccable performers on this disc. All the material was wisely chosen and presented, including one of the slowest "O del mio amato ben's" and one of the slowest "Salley Gardens", indicative of the beautiful breath control this artist had. I have to take exception to one of the comments made by one reviewer, of the "lack of sesitivity to the music that most classical singers possess". This is plain ignorant. This reviewer clearly does not understand the great artistic endeavor that classical singers have to have with Song literature---only a non-singer could have said this. Our finest classical singers of memory have all been outstanding musicians. They also have texts to interpret in many languages. I, as a singer-performer-teacher take great umbrage at comments like this which serve only to degrade the richness of so much repertoire.
I too hated the untimely passing of this fabulous singer. She is one of four famous women singers who all died at the age of 53. I think this disc was recorded not to long before she passed away and does reflect her "goodbye" to her audience. However the disc will remain as timely as the repertoire in it.

Hidden Treasure.......2003-11-04
This recording is possibly one of the best examples of beautiful singing one will ever find. The repertoire, the artfulness, the line and the sheer beauty of Miss Auger's voice is a rare find. I've just recently purchased another copy as I loaned mine to a friend who begged to keep it! One note on the cover - this new cover art seems to imply this CD is some light version of 1970's Montovani romance music. Nothing could be further from the truth. Though the previous jacket (a photo of Miss Auger on pale pink) did look dated, I hope the next pressing of this (& I'm sure they'll be many more to come!) will give this collection the class packaging it deserves. This is a collector's item. Enjoy!!
Gorgeous, sensitive music.......2001-06-15
So first of all, ignore the cheesy cover art and album title. This is a beautiful collection of songs, beautifully performed. Since I concur with the other reviews that laud Auger's performance (though don't forget the accompanist Dalton Baldwin, who is also outstanding), I'll add only the comment that there is a certain melancholy surrounding a lot of the songs and performances that (a) I find haunting and appealing, and (b) you would never know simply from looking at the album.
The performance of "Why, No One to Love" is worth the price of admission alone.

With his 1999 Met triumph as Tristan--the most taxing of all Wagner's tenor roles--Canadian singer Ben Heppner has fully earned his heralded position as the great new Heldentenor of our time. His Lohengrin is a signature role, while his album German Romantic Opera has been nominated for a Grammy. Yet Heppner also commands tremendous versatility--and of a much more engaging character than that of the typical crossover effort--using his powerful, bronze-tinged tenor to tender and charming effect in My Secret Heart. This is a collection of songs roughly from the period between the two world wars, when music began to reach mass audiences via radio and screen. Many of these are almost forgotten gems--emblems of a vanished era--but once had wide cultural currency: the World War II hit "We'll Gather Lilacs," the radio show Family Hour's theme tune "Let My Song Fill Your Heart," and the oft-recorded 1919 ballad "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise." Heppner, with his sturdy beauty of tone and sweet, natural-sounding vibrato, breathes new life into this genre. He handles the idiom's unabashed schmaltz with charm and brings a lilting urbanity to two Noël Coward tunes, with especially bittersweet refinement in "I'll Follow My Secret Heart." --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Almost too much lavender and roses, but a delight anyway.......2006-08-29
These are beloved popular songs from our grandparents' generation that are redolent of lavender an tears. Their sentimentality couldn't be more out of fashion, but Ben Heppner steps forward, like Mario Lanza before him, to offer thrills amidst the honeyed scents. He's totally sincere, and you'd have to be Alberich or Don Pizarro to react with anything but a melting heart. God, I'm falling into the same vocabulary as these songs. No need to blush, though, with such a great singer at hand.
Mr. Heppner Must Have A Large Parlour!.......2005-02-22
I purchased this CD after hearing Mr. Heppner in recital singing "Homing" for an encore. This small gem written by Teresa Del Riego is a haunting song about loneliness. We learn from the notes-- they are very informative with bios on the composers included here as well as the words to the lyrics-- that she composed this ballad in 1917, the year her husband was killed in France just before the ending of World War I. There are other lovelies here as well: "I Love Life", "We'll Gather Lilacs", "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" as well as music by Noel Coward, Sigmund Romberg and Rudolf Friml. Heppner also sings "I'll Be Seeing You." It's such a relief to hear someone other than Liberace do that number since it was the song that he always used to close his television show in the 50's and unfortunately made into a syrupy cliche.
Mr. Heppner says these are songs of the parlour, stage and silver screen. His glorious voice which appears to be a combination of steel and gold fills a recital hall easily. He would need a huge parlour to sing in as well.
This CD is quite wonderful. There are no dull cuts. Since the songs are all about love, this would make a great February 14 gift.
He can keep his secret to himslef.......2003-12-13
This is OBNOXIOUS, this dude should be in operas. i am speechless, he is one loud mouthed dude!
What a 'crossover' album should be!.......2001-09-01
In general, I hate it when classical singers make 'crossover' recordings. Usually the singer has no idea how to sing 'pop' material in anything like the proper style - even someone who is singing it because he or she genuinely likes the music and not just to milk cash from the unsuspecting masses. But there are always exceptions to a rule, and this CD is one of them. Ben Heppner here scales down his huge operatic voice and shows his 'secret heart', a more intimate side of his musical personality.
There is no question that Heppner is one of the greatest tenors of our age. He is often compared with his fellow Canadian Jon Vickers (with whom he shares much of his repertory) but especially here, he is beginning to remind me more and more of Jussi Bjorling, and I can think of no higher compliment. Part of this is because Bjorling actually sang quite a bit of repertory similar to what Heppner sings here, but more importantly, both voices have an ideal combination of power and sweetness. Heppner's is essentially a very lyric voice despite its large size, and he is capable of great tonal beauty and sensitivity. This not only makes his Wagner, Giordano, and Berlioz very special, but makes him equally adept with the gentle little gems he sings on this disc. He is helped somewhat by the fact that these songs, most of which were written in the very early part of the 20th century, are a lot closer to the 'classical' style than more modern pop. But what really makes Heppner perfect for this material is his total identification with the texts, his tenderness, and his utter sincerity. Also, his diction is superb - you won't need the printed texts to understand what he is singing. In the hands of a lesser singer, some of these old fashioned songs would be absolute treacle. But an artist like Heppner can raise up even 'substandard' compositions and give them the aura of greatness.
In the more upbeat songs, Heppner sings with the thrilling, heroic tone that has made him in demand in every opera house in the world. He makes 'Let All My Life Be Music' into his personal mission statement. 'Homing' was also a favorite of another great Wagnerian tenor, namely Lauritz Melchior. 'I Love Life!', complete with splendid high C, is sung with enough cheer and vigor to bring anybody out of a depression. But this repertory is often gentle and introspective, and Heppner can also easily fine down his voice to a splendid pianissimo, drawing you in and enticing you to pay attention as opposed to banging you over your head like many other tenors do. Ivor Novello's 'Love is My Reason For Living' and Ernest Charles' 'Let My Song Fill Your Heart' are light, gracious Viennese waltzes. The familiar 'Roses of Picardy', 'Bird Songs at Eventide' and 'I'll Be Seeing You' are also sung sweetly and caressingly. Two more Novello songs are among the best tracks on the album. 'Someday My Heart Will Awake', is soft, gentle, and nostalgic, rising to a passionate conclusion. 'We'll Gather Lilacs' is obviously a love song from Heppner to his wife Karen (to whom the entire album is dedicated), full of yearning and deeply moving.
The operetta selections are even more special. In the Serenade from 'The Student Prince', which is alone worth the price of the CD, Heppner makes something truly thrilling of the declaration 'Oh, hear my longing cry!/Oh, love me or I die!', and ends with not one but two spectacular high Cs. What a pity that the chances of him ever recording the entire operetta are so slim! The cajolingly sung title song from 'The Desert Song' is almost as fine, as is 'Love Me Tonight' from 'The Vagabond King'. Finally, the title song 'I'll Follow My Secret Heart', with yet another brilliant high C, makes a splendid finish to this very enjoyable album.
I should also give credit to noted composer and orchestrator Jonathan Tunick for his warm, rich, and perfectly scaled arrangements of these songs. Like Heppner, he finds the perfect mood for each piece and never engages in schmaltz that one might expect from some of this material. The only complaint I have about this disc is the one I have about many contemporary CDs - why is there only 54 minutes of music on a medium that can hold almost 80 minutes? There are assuredly more than 18 songs Heppner could have recorded in this vein. I would have liked to have seen more operetta items in particular. Although I suppose they couldn't have recorded the Drinking Song from 'The Student Prince' as well as the Serenade without a chorus, it would have been nice if 'Deep In My Heart, Dear' had been included. Still, the quality of what is there far outweighs the quantity. The excellent documentation, in German and French as well as English, includes a personal note from Heppner, biographies of all the composers as well as Heppner and Tunick, and complete song texts. The cover shows Heppner surrounded by red velvet, designed, amusingly enough, by Red Herring Productions!
Whether you're an opera lover who wants to hear a great tenor in a lighter mood, or a fan of early 20th century popular music who is curious to see what it sounds like sung by a genuinely great voice, this disc is essential. It is an excellent introduction to Heppner's artistry if you haven't experienced it before, and after listening to it you might want to try some of his opera CDs, both solo recitals and complete recordings. There are few voices that could serve as a better introduction for a neophyte to the wonderful world of opera. If only more 'crossover' singers (both classical and pop) had Heppner's musical integrity...
This cd has left me speechless, wow!.......2001-02-18
Air give me air, I need lots of air, air, air.......This cd has caused me a lot of adverse breathing.
The things that I have read about Ben have been very true. He really is a lot more than I ever bargained for. He is THAT GOOD.
I need to go out on a limb and say that he is the best tenor I have ever heard. In my wildest dreams I never thought anyone could be that good.
For this cd Ben choose to sing a lot of standards. Bravo! This is my kind of music. Ben did an excellent job crooning us with his golden voice. He knew when to hold back and when to sing at full strength. This is marvelous how he worked each song to get the full meaning out of it.
The only complaint I have is there was not enough of the good olde songs that I wanted to hear Ben sing. I know it's hard to please all the people all the time and I understand where Ben was coming from.
This cd is a must for the fans of beautiful opera singers who crossover with popular music.

Pure Perfection .......2006-09-25
Words cannot express how much I adore these two discs, but here goes anyway. A friend gave me a burned copy 'Love Songs' which I lost and so I purchased this double disc set. Arleen is by far and away my favorite soprano of all time and if you end up owning these cd's, I have no doubt she will become yours as well. Arleen had the most gorgeous voice, a pure yet colorful tone. And her technique as demonstrated on these recordings was superb. If you are a singer as am I, you will not be able to ignore her phrasing on The Salley Gardens - it's truy astonishing. If you are in to doing side by side comparison, try listening to Arleen's version of O Del Mio Amato Ben, then listen to Sumi Jo's version. But be forewarned if you're a Sumi Jo fan, you won't be able to listen to her version ever again. Arleen wrings every bit of naked emotion out of that song without ever being cheesy or over the top. Her musical instinct and interpretation was as flawless as her voice and technique. I use these cd's as my personal master classes with an impeccable artist who was taken from us all much too soon.
Had a Freudian moment.......2005-08-12
Be it known, I had no intention of writing a review of this recording. I still do not in fact. But I listened to the late Ms. Auger's reading of 'Lascia chio pianga' and nearly seized (cigarette in hand and all.) I've yet to move beyond track five. That being documented, I implore both the fastidious collector of vocal music and the layman alike to purchase this set. Oh, and about the Freud...following the aforementioned revelatory aural sensation of some five minutes, I typed amazing.com in place of the amazon.com destination. "Behind every mishap in speech, writing, etc. there lies an unconcious motive..."
Well,
No Villa-Lobos.......2003-05-28
Since I purchased this album specifically for the recording of the Villa-Lobos, I am extremely disappointed that it was replaced by "He Shall Feed His Flock." She sings everything beautifully, but it is not the recording it pretends to be.
Be warned!.......2003-05-03
My copy did not have the works by Heitor Villa-Lobos. The first disk in the set is Delos 3026, "Bach, Handel: Arias," which includes two selections from Alexander's Feast and "He Shall Feed His Flock" from the Messiah. I am not disappointed. Ms. Auger sings wonderfully. My second disk is Delos 3029 "Love Songs," which makes it a good bargain. But there are no texts.
Unforgettable.......2002-05-16
After much auditioning and re-auditioning, Auger's "Rejoice" here has finally replaced Kathleen Battle's fine performance on "Grace" as my favorite.
Both singers are at their best in the repeat, where their technique and ornamentation will knock anyone's socks off. But where Battle does a musical and brilliant concerto-like display of Kathleen Battle, Auger instead serves Handel with overriding sincerity. She builds intensity to an incredible pitch, ending on an almost trumpet-like flourish to announce the coming of the King.
As did so much of her singing, this recording sets the all-time standard. Fortunately for the world, the damned brain cancer that killed her body could not take her music from us.

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27
Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.
She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.
Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.
This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

A pop gem sleeper. Absolutely and simply stunning!.......1999-10-08
I was absolutely stunned by brilliance of Baaba Maal's unheralded single. This single genuinely deserved much more airplay than it got. Without question, it deserves to be ranked among the top 25 singles released in 1999. From the joyous, uplifting, Afro-Caribean beat of the opening radio mix to the hauntingly beautiful, ambient treatment by Fila Brazilia (one of my favorite smooth cuts of all time), the EP shines like a rare diamond amidst the rough of most of the pop single offerings. All five mixes are eminently danceable. Especially notable are the dub-heavy, jazz-tinged Thievery mix and the beautifully ethereal Fila Brazilia reconstruction. And don't forget the sultry and soothing female sub-vocals at the intro and conclusion of the wonderful afrobeat radio mix! Do yourself a favor - treat yourself to this single. You won't be disappointed.
