A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28
Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!
an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31
Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

Essential works from an essential composer.......2004-10-07
This volume contain the holy works of Purcell that are composed only for continuo without orchestra. Thw anthems have a haunting immediacy without orchestra. If you can no afford all of the 11 volumes of Purcell, I recommend you buy this volume and Number 1.
Purcell died at a very young age. His output is a deep and important as that of Bach. The 3 volumes I have listened to have demonstrated Purcell's ability to word paint gorgeously all of his texts.
As many of these volumes as you can afford belong in the collection of every classical music lover.
The entire set is outstanding!!!.......2003-01-16
While some of the works are superior to others the entire set is great in the realm of production. Mostly all of these pieces are just superb and if you are someone who enjoys English Baroque then you absolutely MUST purchase these cds. If you enjoy complex, melancholic or heroic music then I urge you to purchase this cd and the rest of the volumes in the set...you won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
This is Freedom's first album........2003-06-12
You'd think an album like this could live up to the incendiary words on its cover, but alas, the only freedom touted by the musicians here is the freedom to answer that clarion call of mediocrity. The first song, Together starts out promisingly enough, as most first songs on albums usually do. A hint of some very hard, no-nonsense rock is offered. They even wear the funk hat comfortably on the next song, "Miss Little Louise"; arguably (and very ironically) this song anticipates some of what would be Little Feat's finest work in the later seventies. All too quickly, the band loses its way on "Sweaty Feet", a boring fuzz guitar Chuck Berry clone. "Brainbox Jam" is a grim parable of why you should never mix a wah-wah pedal, with distortion and funk. Suffice it to say, this song does not jam. "Direction" tries to return things back from the never never land of the previous song; it is a great echo of Bobby Harrison's previous band, Procol Harum. "Going Down" is what this album should have been: everything works here; it's heavy and hard hitting with a killer guitar solo and vocal to boot. After that, things get really weird as you enter balladland with "Dream" and "Ladybird". The former tries to show off the band's sensitive side and the latter exhibits the bands jazz sense. Both songs are out of place, because the orchestral/horn dubs completely drown out the band's playing and muddy up what was already a shakey musical identity. Freedom's album isn't a total loss to the ear, but it could have used a stronger musical direction.
Freedom is less than a legend..........2001-05-24
...More of a lost treasure
Despite their hard-rocking live reputation, in the studio Freedom were a pretty eclectic band with a keen sense of subtlety and dynamics. After recording a few different albums for a few different labels they finally signed to Vertigo. Released in 1972, this was their second album on that prestigious label, and their last one overall
Freedom were always strong vocally, and yet indulged in some extended instrumentals. Like many bands formed in the late 60s, their style is hard to define- although undoubtedly influenced by the blues, there are frequent funky guitar licks that indicate the direction Bobby Harrison would take with his next project, Snafu
Among tracks such as "Little Miss Louise", "Brainbox Jam" and "Ladybird" you'll find several ballads, but sitting alongside these there's a barnstorming cover of the Don Nix standard "Going Down". Thanks to the efforts of reissue label Angel Air, the band's output is now available for all to enjoy on CD

Customer Reviews:
Great CD!!.......2003-08-07
This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.
Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20
Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.
