4 out of 5 stars a classic?.......2004-05-08

i agree that romeo's album does not always get the full credit that it deserves. i am not sure that this album is a classic. i do know that it contains a classic with the title song. and herein lies the problem, no other songs on the album reaches the pike as war in babylon. they still deserve a listen to, nevertheless. one step forward, chase the devil, norman, and smokey room are all good songs.another reason as to why i like album is that it focuses on the gap that exists between the rich and poor...(uptown babies don't cry basically still applies to prsent state of our world where the poor continues to suffer at the hands of the rich).

5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2000-09-15

This lp has everything a reggae fan could possibly want- great grooves, pertinent vocals, and Lee "Scratch" Perry.

This is certainly one of the most underrated and consistent efforts I have come across. Romeo's stylings mix perfectly with the tight grooves of the Upsetters. He came a long way from his "Wet Dream" single in the late 60's, and it shows through clearly on the lp.....Of course, Perry's presence is written all over the lp, which just adds to its greatness.

Fans of this lp should also get Perry's amazing "Arkology" 3 cd set for many alternate takes from Romeo, Junior Murvin, etc... It offers incredible insight into the amazing mind of both Perry and Romeo, who made a great team.

"Lucifer, son of the morning, I'm gonna chase you outta earth." -Max Romeo

You did just that, Maxxie. Jah be praised.

5 out of 5 stars Reggae Classic.......1999-12-01

I thought surely when I heard this record that it was a "greatest hits" compilation. It was so consistent and sure. Prior to this record, Max Romeo had a reputation for sexually explicit (for the times) and sexually suggestive lyrics. This record shows his socio-political consciousnes with such tracks as "Uptown Babies Don't Cry," "One Step," and the title track.

The only bad thing about this recording is that it makes me wistful for the days when razor-sharp super tight rhythm sections, wonderful harmonies, activist lyrics and good melodies were standard fare in Jamaican music. Sadly, automation and dancehall simplicity have eaten the music.

Nonetheless, Lee Scratch Perry and the Upsetters put a fine gloss on Max's diamond. Complete with rootsy scratch style guitar and the musicality of the Jamaican patois, this record is a classic example of what reggae used to be at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Max Romeo grows up into a soulful and spiritual adult........1999-11-15

Max Romeo's team up with the Upsetters is a dynamite mix. Under the tutoring of famed Reggae producer Lee "Scratch" Perry, they combine with songs that are both soulful and contain an almost fervent religious appeal. Max Romeo transcends his earlier "Dirty Boy" stage, showing great maturity over his previous albums such as "Wet Dream". Always insightful and entertaining, "War Ina Babylon" features two of the best Reggae songs in this reviewers opinion: "Smile outta Style, and the title track "War Ina Babylon". While not for the ears of those who have only known reggae threw popular act's ie, UB40 and Big Mountain, those who have bought Bob Marley albums other than just the two Legend CD's are in for a delight.

5 out of 5 stars A great reggae album-Max at his best.......1999-08-20

5 out of 5 stars Roots Reggae at its best.......2005-07-14

I'm hesitant to give an album 5 stars. But this album is really that good. Vocally, Max Romeo puts on a great show, outshining his work on "War Inna Babylon" by a good amount. The production is top notch, with tracks being laid down at the legendary Black Ark, Harry J's, and Randy's. The back-up band is also legendary, including, amongst others, "Family Man" and Carlton Barrett and Chinna Smith.

One reviewer (somewhat bizarrely) weighed in on the "Marxist" lyrics. "On the minus side of the ledger, the lyrics are cartoonishly Marxist..but Romeo comes across as more of an earnest naif than as a danger to an island economy." Romeo--if it wasn't obvious already--proves on this set that he's far too intelligent to be dismissed as naive.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful Reggae Minimalism.......2004-03-22

Max Romeo's less-is-more ethos is evident with spare arrangements that perfectly showcase his soulful, Heptone-esque voice.

Like an artist who uses empty canvas to good effect, Romeo uses the silence between notes to evoke both outer-space alienation and the warm ambiance (think "Us and Them" by Pink Floyd or "Another Green World" by Brian Eno). It's no easy trick.

If you haven't heard of Max Romeo before, you may be surprised to find how close he comes to achieving transcendant greatness on a couple of tracks. On "Warning Warning" he goes into a zone, while "Every Man ought to Know" has unforgettably great backing vocals.

On the minus side of the ledger, the lyrics are cartoonishly Marxist (smiting Babylon with hammers, sickles, and whatnot), but Romeo comes across as more of an earnest naif than as a danger to an island economy.

This wildly underappreciated album belongs in any reggae collection that goes beyond 10 CDs. Even if you don't agree that it is great, it can't be argued that this doesn't stand up well to repeated listens. I must have listened to this disc twenty times in recent months, which outside of, say, Blackmarket Clash just doesn't happen on my CD player.

5 out of 5 stars Top Ranking Romeo!!!.......2003-10-14

This is an absolutely stunning collection of deep, catchy, warm, political, deadly dread Reggae! Although Max Romeo is best known for his excellent album 'War Ina Babylon' (produced & co-written by the great Lee Perry) I think 'Open the Iron Gate' to be his best! (By the way, talking about Lee Perry: "Three Blind Mice" is an Upsetter track from 1974 and the corrosive "Fire Fe De Vatican" was recorded at the Black Ark).
In fact 'Open The Iron Gate' is made up of Max's 1975 'Revelation Time' album as well as various tracks from the period.
All the tracks are heavy killers and the booklet contains a good text on Max Romeo and some very nice pictures!
I think you really need this album, there's no way out!!!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best roots reggae ever committed to vinyl.......2001-11-05

As far as some people are concerned, Blood and Fire can do no wrong. Much as I admire their re-issue programme myself, I don't feel that every single release is necessarily a must-own CD. However, Max Romeo's Open The Iron Gate is most assuredly one such release. This is arguably Max Romeo's finest hour, even though many classics such as War Inna Babylon, Chase The Devil and One Step Forward are to be found on the earlier War Inna Babylon LP -- nearly every track is a gem. Socialism, class struggles and the great divide between the rich and the poor are all major themes, explored with great flair and lucidity on tracks such as No Peace, Warning Warning and Revelation Time. War Inna Babylon, Romeo's signature track, is recast as the incendiary Fire Fe The Vatican, a scathing denunciation of the Catholic church. Other highlights include the palpable pathos of A Quarter Pound Of I'cense, the brilliant Three Blind Mice, whose Trenchtown Rock-style celebration of dance culture seems to have only grown more poignant with the passage of time, and the impassionate appeal of the title track. Needless to say, the Lee 'Scratch' Perry-influenced production (although only Romeo himself is credited on this release) is first-rate throughout; also, some (but sadly not all) tracks come with dub versions mixed in. I would have preferred separate tracks for the dubs, but they are excellent otherwise. All in all, an impeccable roots reggae record.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2000-09-15

I was a very happy man when I happened upon this collection. While much of this lp comes from Romeo's amazing tour de force "Revolution Time," this does not mean that you should stay away from it- far from it.

Romeo has a mozt amazing voice, and he certainly showcases it here. Add to that the amazing dub master Lee "Scratch" Perry and the cup of reggae brilliance runneth over tenfold.

Whether you are a newcomer to reggae or an ardent fan, this lp should be in your personal collection. It is a large nugget of greatness that should not be ignored.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! No Pepper fan should do without..........2007-04-09

This album is an absolute MUST for Pepper fans! It really shows how the band has evolved over the years, and it's cool to hear the "original" versions of some of your favorite Pepper songs. There are several songs on this album that are so good that they should have been on previous albums (like Lucy, New Sunday, and especially The Arena just to name a few.) In short, get this album if you like Pepper, or any music in the rock/reggae genre... you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars To Da Max..........2007-03-21

As seen in Amazon's product description, Pepper's "To Da Max" is a collection of 20 (not 19) b-sides, demos, and live performances from 1997 to 2004. The question is, are these b-sides and demos any good? In my opinion all the tracks are pretty good, and in fact, some are even excellent. The reason why I really like this album is because it shows the evolution of some of my favorite Pepper songs (Too Much, Point and Shoot, etc), and because most of the songs showcase Pepper in the earliest phases of their career (14 of the 20 songs were recorded before 2001). Also, as with most of Pepper's work, the songs are heavily influenced by reggae music.
First, I'll look at the B-sides. The first track, "The Arena", will probably be recognizable to most Pepper fans, and is just a very fun song. The B-sides "Wasting Time", "New Sunday", "Lie Rumor Lie", and "New Beef" are all excellent and album worthy. "Blunt", a song from 1997 and Bret's garage, is another good one.
Next, the live performances. There are 5 live tracks, 6 if you count "Medley", some good, and some not so good. "Green Hell" is great, and so is "Point and Shoot". The two live songs I wasn't impressed with were "Good Enough" and "Armagideon Time", mainly because the quality isn't that great, but what can you expect?
Now the demos. The great thing about putting the demos on the ablum is that it shows the fans how some of the best Pepper songs evolved into their final album versions. The bad thing is that the demos, of course, are not as good. However, the demo versions of "Stormtrooper" and "Too Much" are still very good, and very different. Basically, the demo versions are just fun to listen to. In the end, "To Da Max" is a great album for Pepper fans, and anybody who enjoys their music will enjoy this CD.

Album Description

As most rock & roll bands started in someone's garage or basement or living room, Phase Selector Sound are two (ex?) punk rockers working out of their ad hoc home studios (heavily influenced by Radio Shack equipment). They create a powerful roots dub that is hypnotic, mesmerizing and trance-inducing. Very much in keeping with ROIR's long history of releasing the absolute best in dub by such artists as Lee Perry, Niney The Observer, Mikey Dread, Mad Professor, Black Uhuru, Badawi, Bill Laswell, Dub Syndicate, Ras Michael, Scientist, Yabby You, Oku Onuora --- and the list goes on! Produced arranged and mixed by Phase Selector Sound.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Sound Bites Just as Good.......2007-03-10

Pleasant background cocktail party music with reggae/dub beats, I purchased it liking the sound bites, but there is nothing more to the album than the soundbites. Never does it get dense or goes anyplace surprising. Cover is better than music. Groups like St. Germain, or the various Parisian club mix albums, like Paris Under a Groove or Hotel Costas series are far better, and I wouldn't really recommend those either, unless you want "chill" coctail party music. Still I don't regret purchase becasue sometimes I just want a groove and to otherwise basically ignore kind of hip "muzak" while I do something else than listen, which is what I would consider this good for. I love that Summer in Paris, Hotel Costas, thing, but much prefer Orb to any of this to fill a similar need in my music. Actually, Orb can be brilliant at times. A couple maybe three Orb albums are superb. I took best tracks from three of them and made one great burned CD. Truth is for "chill" purpose, not that that expression conveys very much to me,I've never heard anything in 30 years that comes close to Discrete Music by Eno or Evening Star by Fripp and Eno. Compared to greats like those ... Well for a "chill" relaxing, after work space, they've never been touched to my knowledge. Sorry if lumping them in with this offends anybody. "Chill" never really made all that much sense to me as a label for music anyway. Sorry if this isnt' what you're looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Hats off to dub-masters Joshua Elrod and Craig Allen!.......2005-09-29

I can only agree with previous reviewers, this is the best dub album I've ever heard, all categories... The coolest thing is that it bridges roots dub with modern dub like no other. The great Hi-fidelity dub series, for example, does on occasions reach the level of Phase Selector Sound. At the same time this album would easily match any dub release blood&fire could possibly throw at you! These guys takes dub to the next level. The production has a fantastic old-school feel to it, with a setup that is simple yet profound. This is truly beautiful music and the album doesn't contain one single tedious moment, every track stands out against the others. Phase Selector Sound kicks off at the highest possible level and stay there throughout the entire album. There's no end to the superlatives this album merits.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy companion of the Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions.......2005-07-20

This is, without a doubt, the best original dub offering I've purchased - online or off - bar none.

In the tradition of the kings of dub (like Augustus Pablo, Mad Scientist, Lee Perry, or the Professor), this album retains very strong ties to its roots (you'll hear snatches of old Upsetter tracks, along with some other nods to those old school influential artists).

At the same time, the album has a very modern feel to it, along the lines of the excellent Hi-Fidelity Dub releases (1-4). There's no question that this album is strictly roots, but the tracks all feel like they have had updating for the downbeat era.

The most shocking thing to me is that this album was released 6 years ago, and I've only discovered it in 2005! Do yourself a favour and purchase it straight away...before it goes out of print (come on...how many other products can you find that have ALL customer reviews giving it 5 out of 5 stars? ;).

5 out of 5 stars The Best Dub Yet........2003-04-01

I've heard a lot of dub, and I own a lot of dub, but I've got to say that this is the best dub yet, I mean the entire CD. Personally this CD is #1 in my book so far. It's worth buying at almost any price. So if you like dub this is the one for you. I can't wait to see what he put out next.

ON THEIR DEBUT ALBUM THEY MASTERED MIXING R&B/SOUL, DANCEHALL REAGAE, HIP-HOP& ELECTRONIC/DANCE MUSIC WITH GREAT SKILL. THE LYRICS ARE ABOUT SEXUALITY, PEACE, LOVE,& CELEBRATING THE GOOD TIMES. I happened to be introduced to this group about four years ago.I heard "Take Your Time" and thought it was a good song.A couple years later,I bought the album and was shocked. The songs range from innuendo, sex, and love to the need for peace, dissed people getting a chance, and just plain chillin'.The Run songs (par."Run Tings) don't make much sense. However, they did an excellent of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" and knocked my socks off with "Everybody's Groovin'" and "Part Time Love Affair".This is a cd I highly recommend taking a listen to.

Album Description

Maxi Priest is the UK's biggest reggae star. His new album '2 The Max' is released on Relentless Records on May 2nd. This is a soft release of the album which was recorded last year in Jamaica, New York and London. The intention is to build up to a full scale release with a cross-over single over the summer but in the meantime release the album to satisfy the growing demand from the reggae and urban music community. Maxi's profile in the reggae/urban UK community has continued to be huge over the last 2 decades. He's scored 14 Top 50 hits in the UK alone. His workload has remained massive, always in demand to play here and appearing on cuts. In fact his extensive worldwide touring and continued writing and recording has prepared him for perhaps his best album yet. Packed with potential hits like 'Fields', a heartfelt cover of Sting's classic 'Fields of Gold'; the emotional potentially huge crossover single 'Hero To Zero', produced by Brian Rawling (Enrique Iglesias 'Hero' / Lemar 'Justice') and a great vehicle for Maxi's incredible smooth vocal; and the more upbeat current Jamaican radio hit 'Believe In Love'. This track has become huge in the reggae community crossing over from Jamaica to here as it based on the biggest reggae rhythm of the summer the 'Dropleaf' riddim. There's also a re-working of Maxi's classic Cat Stevens cover 'Wild World' and collaborations from artists such as Wyclef, Beres Hammond and Shaggy. '2 The Max' is a classic reggae album. EMI. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not quite the max from Maxi!.......2005-09-30

As I am a huge fan of Maxi Priest, I had greatly anticipated this new CD. I didn't find it quite lived up to his previous albums however there are spatterings of the 'old' Maxi with his number 3 track and a reworking of Wild World with Wycleff. Overall, it's an average CD but I'm still a fan!

4 out of 5 stars Maxi Priest is back!.......2005-06-26

I finally got the "2 the Max" CD after a long wait and I love it!

I'm not sure how to describe a man as talented as Maxi Priest. No matter what style of music he sings, he does it all just right. As the saying goes, " good things come to those who wait", well "2 The Max" was worth the "wait" and it is definitely a "good thing". I only wish it had 24 songs instead of 12.

5 out of 5 stars Best stuff from Romeo's early years.......2004-06-21

Yes suh, this is a good collection. All the great early tracks are here - but if you are after the more rootsy later years, you will not find any of the Lee Perry produced stuff here.

But this is just as good, tho in a different style. You get the all-time great rude boy song Wet Dream, some great early soulful rocksteady like Soulful Music and Walk Into the Dawn. His voice is sweet yet he's a hard rasta.

Some songs drift into rootsy reggae, such as Ginalship.

Heaps of highlights like the anthemic Let the Power Fall On I and Don't You Weep. And some real gems like Chi Chi Bud and the wicked groove of Fish In A Pot.

5 out of 5 stars To The Max With Maxi.......2006-04-25

I bought this cd and was very impressed. Maxi still has it, so add it to your collection!

The songs, "There's Nothing Like This," has great commercial radio appeal. "Tender Touch" is an upbeat Reggae cut with a hint of Beres Hammonds written all over it. Maxi did an awsome job on the song, "Hero To Zero." The song "Full Hundred" & "Like I Do," reminds me of Old School Reggae Lover's Rock from way back in the day for sure with a little bit of old school R&B flavor. The roots/reggae cut "Cry For The Children." People think that Maxi has lost his edge with conscious reggae music but this song proves that he can still put out those positive lyrics. Other great songs on this cd are: "Fields" (done by Sting) and WildFire (done by Dennis Brown) Maxi slightly changed some of the words, but the songs are nicely done. Also, let's not forget to give credit to the band w/Dean Frazier and the backgorund singers. Great job!

Maxi has held his own in the music industry for about 20 years and this goes to show you that he has "Stamina", "Staying Power" and "Longevity" All the ingredients of a true and talented entertainer.

You've been blessed with a talent, to use your voice as a vehicle to spread, love, knowledge, and truth. For that, I give thanks. I hope that you continue to create more beautiful songs for our listening enjoyment.

    KNUFF RESPECT!!!

4 out of 5 stars maxi priest/rise to the occassion.......2004-12-02

Well , I am a fan of years of Maxi Priest and have been waiting eagerly for a new cd to FINALLY get released....Although AMAZON keeps pushing the date futher away , I was able to get a promo copy from the U.K....
I have now listened to the disc a few times and it keeps growing on me. I was hoping for a little more rootsy type of groove, but am pretty pleased in general. "Like I do" and "fields" and "tender touch" seem to have radio appeal, especially the later....What we need is a double cd from MAXI with roots-n-culture on one and then maxi-love/r&b stylee on the other (whatch think??)
Anyway , I think it is definately worth the purchase and suggest all fans do so. Unfortunately the www.maxipriest.com website brings you to another company, and finding tour info or fan info is very hard but keep your eyes open, Maxi may be in a town near you very soon, AND GET OUT THERE AND SUPPORT HIM !!!Rrrrrrrrrespect !!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Roots and Reggae.......2004-11-22

It's nice to hear Maxi singing again with a roots reggae feel once again; Maxi is a very soulful singer who strayed to much for commercialism in his recent albums. It's nice to hear he's back----------------
