Sheltering Tree

Over its career, this former fraternity of now solo artists Charles Billingsley and Russ Lee has been about as dependable as‚ well, death and taxes (though, the group's music is admittedly a lot more enjoyable). None of that has changed with the release of Sheltering Tree. Of course, reliability isn't the most thrilling trait in the world. But when a firm foundation is your goal, it's hard to beat. In this area, Sheltering Tree does not disappoint. Think of the album as the musical and lyrical equivalent of chicken noodle soup: pleasantly familiar, warm and nourishing, but unlikely to make you chew too hard. Guest vocals by Fred Hammond, Charlie Peacock, Carolyn Arends, Rebecca St. James, Natalie Grant and Third Day's Mac Powell add dimension to the title track, while NewSong's own Leonard Ahlstrom, acting as producer, leads the group into slightly divergent territory in the flamenco-flavored "Defining Moment." But for the most part, even with the addition of two new members, the verdict remains: Different day. Same old comfort. -- Shari MacDonald (c) 2000 CCM Communications, Inc. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Sheltering Tree.......2007-01-16

I have really enjoyed my CD--Sheltering Tree! All of the songs are good. It arrived in a short amount of time and had no problems with the order.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful melodies-- don't miss this album!.......2006-09-08

Newsong has been around for over two decades and with each release seems to get better and better. Michael O'Brien's vocals and songwriting contributions add a soulfulness and depth to the music and fit in incredibly well with an already amazing group. The songs on this CD are pure, meolody-driven pop and are songs that will lift you up. They're catchy melodies... ones that will no douby bounce around in your mind for hours after the CD has stopped spinning.

"The Christmas Shoes" is a tender song about a young girl wanting a beautiful pair of shoes to give to her sick mother, should she "meet Jesus tonight." It has garnered attention from the mainstream and has become a contemporary Christmas classic. "Wide Open," a personal favorite, has a beautiful melody and uses the imagery of Christ crucified both literally and in his willingness to die "with arms wide open" for all. In short, this is a great CD. It is encouraging and uplifting and a must for any Christian music fan!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Unmissable........2006-06-18

Newsong is definitely a pop group, and there's no denying that. I think you will like this album if you can appreciate the pop side of CCM. If not, go buy some Disciple, Kutless, TFK, Sanctus Real etc., because this album is not for you. I'm not "dissing" anyone here. It ALL depends on your preferred musical style.
As a teenage music fan, it's not uncommon that when I say things like "I like U2" or "Newsong isn't bad" I get funny looks. "Aren't they old?" is usually the response to that. Pop is more a preteen or adult thing. So think of this as a review from a different point of view.
There's something right on about this cd that most cds don't do right: it's just like a good book. Its entrance and exit are captivating: it starts out with an explosion of multiple vocals singing "I do believe it's gonna be another red letter day" and ends with a child singing the final chorus line of "Christmas Shoes". It has climaxes, low points, different characters (multiple vocalists), and the ratio of upbeat songs to slower songs is about equal.
Despite the fact that pop is not my favorite, I cannot possibly recommend passing this up. It is one of my most played cds ever, though I may not always admit it. The lyrics are really good and have very few flaws, the singing is incredible, the music is passable...this cd is overall a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD OF NEWSONG.......2004-04-23

I JUST GOT THIS CD YESTERDAY AND I LISTENED TO IT AND THE WHOLE ALBUM IS GREAT BUT MY FAVORITE SONG IS "I AM NOTHING WITHOUT CHRIST " BECAUSE IN THIS LIFE IN WHICH WE ARE LIVING WE ARE NOTHING WITHOUT CHRIST ! MY SECOND FAVORITE IS " DON'T IT MAKE YOU WANNA GO HOME " TRULEY WE HAVE A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TOO WHEN JESUS CHRIST SPLITS THE EASTERN SKIES AND TAKES US HOME OR IF WE GO HOME BY THE WAY OF DEATH ANYWAY WE GET THERE WILL SURLY WORTH EVERYTHING WE HAVE GONE THRU IN THIS LIFE !! WAY TO GO NEWSONG !!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very deep and touching.......2004-01-12

I remember first hearing "The Christmas Shoes" on the radio probably 3 years back when I was in the car coming home from something. It really had a good, driving melody that touched me instantly. A few years after that I downloaded it and put it onto a CD and love it. This song will go good with the album that Newsong has put together -- I recommend it.
