About the Artist
Paul Leddington Wright began conducting at the age of fifteen when he was appointed organist and choirmaster at the High Street Methodist Church, Maidenhead, England, and conductor of the Maidenhead Youth Orchestra. Four years later, he was awarded an organ scholarship to St. Catharine's College, Cambridge where he studied conducting with Sir David Willcocks and Peter le Huray, and organ with Peter Hurford.

Paul has a long association with Coventry Cathedral as organist, Director of Music, and more recently the Cathedral's music adviser. He has been associated with Saint Michael's Singers since 1978, and the choir's Director of Music since 1985. Paul has made numerous recordings with Saint Michael's Singers, including Alleluia, Sing!, Crown Him!, Coventry Carols, and Gloria–all on the Coventry Music label. Since 1985, Paul has been an integral part of the International Church Music Festival and was named the Festival's artistic director in 1991, sharing conducting responsibilities with Sir David Willcocks. A frequent conductor and organist for the BBC Radio 4's Morning Service, Paul is now in high demand as a conductor for the weekly BBC television series Songs of Praise. The series has taken him from stadiums to cathedrals, and abroad to locations including Spain, France, Majorca, the Canaries, Barbados, and Israel. Saint Michael’s Singers was formed in 1963, shortly after the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, by David Lepine, the first director of mu! sic at the new cathedral. Since 1985, the choir has been directed by arranger, conductor, and organist Paul Leddington Wright, during which time the Saint Michael’s Singers have gained an international reputation for musical excellence and a wide following around the world.

The Saint Michael's Singers are an auditioned mixed choir of ninety voices, of all ages and drawn from all walks of life, mostly from the city of Coventry and the county of Warwickshire. They work enthusiastically to achieve professional standards, and maintain a busy schedule of performances, appearing with many top orchestras including the Hallé, Royal Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony and English Symphony, as well as the London Mozart Players and the Gabrieli Consort. In addition to their concerts with Mr. Wright, they have sung under Sir David Willcocks, Jane Glover, William Boughton, Steven Cleobury and Mstislav Rostropovich.

This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation,and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name.The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.

The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.

Dan Schutte's Here I Am, Lord.......2001-01-08

I bought this collection because I saw the song, Here I Am, Lord written by Daniel Schutte. I grew up singing this song and many other pieces from the St. Louis Jesuits and this continues to be one that has deep meaning for me. In addition, the other pieces in this collection are very enjoyable to listen to, not only for worship but for time of reflection.

After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

the 1st time i heard what is now my favorite hymn was during an unfortunate circumstance it was at the funeral mass for his eminence thomas j murphy your former archbishop if you are catholic and live in seattle the mass of course took place at st james cathedral were the combined choirs lifted thier voices and and mine into heaven as all of us sang this glorius hymn wich was written the text anyway by his grace the rt reverend william
wallsham how who was an episcopal ( anglican ) bishop in the diocese of london england from arround 1720 to 1745
the current tune it is sung by in most churches today was written by ralph vaughan williams 1860 to 1943 the tune name is sine nomine translated from latin into english means tune without a name i highly recomend this album if you are a traditionalist christian

This CD & hardbound book combination is a wonderful view into the historic Russian Orthodox faith for the English speaker, the thesis of which builds off the Eastern understanding that an icon represents an invisible spiritual reality, the Church on earth is an icon of the heavenly church and that liturgical chant is an Icon (or image) of the angelic singing. These then, are in "divine harmon" as to how they work together to engage the faithful in the ascent to heaven. The CD is comprised of selections from the series of recordings by Anatoly Grindenko and the Russian Patriarchate Choir, and one portion of the book includes an essay by Anatoly Grindenko, and liner notes and complete hymn text in English. The other portion of the book is written by Russian iconographer Adolf Ovchinnikov, and explains the history and development of icons and their use in the Christian faith. It is comprised of a series of essays that have been translated into English, with copious! full-color icons representing ancient to recent icons, many previously unpublished (from St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, The Hermitage, the Byzantine Museum in Athens, and others). Book is 62 pages in length

There are several wonderful works on this seventh installment of the Music Masters series of historic Stravinsky recordings. Probably the most famous is Stravinsky's jazz take on the Faust legend, The Soldier's Tale. There are other delights as well: his arrangement of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem, for solo violin; his serene Mass setting; the childlike Cat's Lullabies; and Monument, a homage to the notorious Italian Renaissance composer Gesualdo.
