Album Description
Rick Crawford and David Piland grew up in church together in Houston, Texas. They lost touch, but twelve years later met up again, unwittingly, in Franklin, Tennessee where each had taken up residence.

Remembering the old hymns they grew up with, David and Rick decided to record some of them, but in their own style, hoping to create renewed interest in the timeless tunes we all love.

Country Hymns, Volume 1 contains 12 flavorful old hymns - recorded for a contemporary Country audience - that Rick and David hope will lift listeners’ hearts to higher ground.

I've played this CD over and over and still love every minute of it. The music is so varied, so beautiful. I now want to get other albums recorded by Alan Lomax, a genius for recognizing and recording great music. Highly recommended for anyone who loves uncommercial melodies and pure voices.

Truth be told this disc is not for everyone and I hope that this description will help those interested in hearing the ancestors of many major music forms find a good listen. Alan Lomax made an attempt to record the provincial musical styles in their home and on the participants own terms. What you get are real individuals singing and playing instruments for reasons that no longer exist today; to pass the day at work, to pass along local stories and traditions, to pass the time in jail, to provide expression for small communities, and to praise their gods where the lived and breathed. There was not a dollar to be made for any performance on this disc, and though we pay to hear it now, it had an effect on the musicians and singers. This music is not polished but it is a fantastic cd based on its content and not its production value. You won't hear music like this often in your life.

If you like Smoky Mountain Hymns and similar music, this is a definite "Gotta Have It" for your music library! These arrangements are very beautifully done, and the instruments take you away to a little country church with plenty of guitars and banjos for everyone! This is "old-time" gospel at its best in the instrumental version.

      There was a time when the entertainment of our nation began on the back porch. The back porch was place where people came together for good food, friendship and entertainment. These two guys have captured the magic of the back porch with their country renditions of the old hymns that we all grew up on. I loved it.
