Declaration
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With soaring strings and dramatic choruses and hooks, Steven Curtis Chapman knows how to write the Big Pop Song. He appears to have nearly perfected the art on Declaration, his most upbeat and polished effort to date. For example, songs like "Magnificent Obsession" and "God Is God" aren't just pop songs but sweeping mini-epics of faith that are carried along by Chapman's passionate vocals and crashing crescendos. He's also adept at sprinkling modern references to freshen his hard-rock motif, such as the lyrical tip of the hat to news events in 2000 on the opener, "Live Out Loud," and the Nintendo Game Boy sound effects on "See the Glory." Of course, Chapman has long known how to massage those melancholy hearts with such balladry as "Carry You to Jesus" and "Savior." Clearly, Declaration raises a bar that was already beyond reach for most of his contemporaries. Chapman is a brilliant songwriter with a finger on the pulse of what today's Christian music fans want to hear. --Michael Lyttle --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Well Done.......2007-05-18
Steven Curtis Chapman's energy and soul make this a must have. What a way to honor the Lord!
Rescue and Freedom.......2007-02-15
This album is extremely difficult to review because of it's extreme complexity in string arrangements and the awesome vocal power given from SCC. Yet it's absolute power in focusing on God makes Grace revealed, which simplifies the nature of the Lamb and the explanation of this music. I suppose that I can explain it in this mannerism. I am part of Security Forces in the United States Air Force. I am currently deployed in Baghdad, Iraq. In the time that I have been deployed it has been difficult to remain close with God due to a many factors. The power of positive, uplifting, and reassuring music has been absent from my life, which also makes it difficult to stay mentally and spiritually in one Peace of God. Thankfully there are forms of Rescue and Freedom in these songs. From No Greater Love to God is God to Magnificent Obsession, this album truly makes this deployment spirtually and mentally bearable. Music does have power to revive even the most lost. I just hope that Love will continue to take me in.

Steven Curtis Chapman ~ Declaration.......2006-11-04
I love this album. It's such an arrow that points to Christ and His declaration of love for us. Thanks, SCC for putting into words what so many of us want to say to HIM!!

AWESOME CD.......2006-08-24
actually...im not a kid...i just dont have my own name on here and i didn't want to review on my dads...steven curtis chapman is BY FAR my favorite artist of all time...and this album is PROBABLY my favorite of his...i guess you could say its "rockier" than the others, although i love them as well..
Live Out Loud- everyone LOVES this song..i do as well but believe it or not, its not one of my favorites...overplayed on christian radio. good message, good music...all around good song. 8/10
This Day-probably my least favorite on the whole album...good song, great message...just not my favorite compared to the others. 7/10
Jesus Is Life-great song! love it so much!!! 9.5/10
No Greater Love-MY FAVORITE SONG ON THE WHOLE CD!!! i know everyone says stuff about the chanting at the end..yeah that part's weird. but up until that point...fantastic song. 10/10
God Is God- LOVE THIS SONG!!! fantastic message that the people of today need to hear..."God is God and I am not." exactly! 9.5/10!
See The Glory-this song is fantastic!!! it's definitely different...but i love it so much!!! 10/10
Bring it On- AWESOME!!!!!! i just love steven curtis chapman!!! 10/10
When Love Takes You In-beautiful song about the adoption of his daughter Shaohannah (i think that's how you spell it) from china...this was FANTASTIC in concert...has us in tears! 10/10!
Magnificent Obsession- ok...i take that back on "no greater love". this is my FAVORITE SONG that he's ever recorded!! my favorite song of all time probably! 15/10! haha
Declaration of Dependence- this song is pretty cool...i like it a lot...not my favorite but i still love it! 9/10
God Follower- i really like this song...not my favorite...lyrics wise is probably the weakest, although it has its strong points such as "I wanna be a God follower, I wanna be a God follower, I wanna walk the trails He's marked for me" pretty darn good if i must say!!! 8.5/10
Carry You to Jesus- this song has helped me through a lot so therefore, i must give it a high rating. great song...great message...helped me a lot through the death of my aunt, as well as helping my best friend through the death of her friend back in april. 9.5/10
Savior- slowest song, lots of strings. However, it is one of my favorites!!! then again, i love them all...i'm giving it a 10/10.
great job on this album Steven! i recommend it to all!!! its by far my favorite CD that i've ever owned!
A rather average offering..........2006-08-15
I realize that this album has been very highly reviewed on Amazon, but I found it to be rather nondescript. Many of the tracks are a rather generic, pop-rock sound, and I had hoped that Chapman would have matured beyond that point at such a stage in his career. To be sure, I love the heart and ministry of SCC, and I respect him greatly. I was just disappointed with this album. It seems that songs which specifically reference Regis asking someone about being a millionaire are trying too hard to be cool and trendy, while also becoming quickly dated. The best track is "When Loves Takes You In." Though this album is decent, I wouldn't really recommend it. Some of his other, earlier work is more memorable.

The Alarm Goes Marching On.......2005-08-09
In my view, Declaration is the Alarm's best album, vying with Strength for that title. This remastered edition has the original IRS cover (at least in the picture), but it has about twice as many songs as the original mid-'80s release, including my favorite cut, "Absolute Reality." The copy I bought from the Alarm website had a different cover but the liner booklet had the original IRS picture so you could change it if you wanted.
Mike Peters said that the original IRS albums were produced differently than he would have liked, and the new Alarm re-releases are all remastered, each with many additional bonus tracks. That makes this edition of Declaration even better. The radio only played a couple Alarm songs; here are 22 contenders for your iPod shuffle, including "Howling Wind," the best hackey sack song of all time. Hear why in its new incarnation this Welsh band goes marching on.

Nostalgia Trip.......2005-09-24
Helps you remember these great and atmospheric movies. Only Nino Rota writes better movie music.
Sweet and Sublime.......1999-06-13
"La valse de Francois T" makes my heart want to burst. Never has sweet melancholia been so sweetly and lyrically expressed. This entire album is a godsend, but "La valse" - it is something else, far beyond my power to convey.
The aural equivalent of Truffaut's films: humane, touching........1998-10-03
Hitchcock had Bernard Herrmann, and Spielberg has John Williams, and Francois Truffaut had Georges Delerue. "Jules and Jim" jauntily evokes the delicious problems of one woman in love with two men. With "Shoot the Piano Player" you can almost see Charles Aznavour in his seedy Paris cafe. And most gloriously, for Truffaut's Oscar winner as Best Foreign Film, "Day for Night," Delerue composes a chorale that celebrates the endlessly repetitious, endlessly varied rituals of filmmaking. A wonderful collection of themes from nine films (plus "La valse de Francois T."), performed by the London Sinfonietta under the direction of Hugh Wolff.

A True Classic!.......2004-12-31
I first heard this album..and yes, it was an ALBUM then..lol...when I was in high school in the mid 80s. A friend of mine turned me on to the band and there was no going back! They were just amazing! A few years later I went to college and they toured...and played at my school! I got the chance to see them do these classic tunes live and WOW! Even more incredible! Buy this album! You won't be sorry you did!
A Blaze of Glory.......2003-11-07
This disc is solid all the way through. The first full-length effort from Wales-based The Alarm, Declaration has drive, power, passion and poetry. Songs like "Marching On" and "Where Were You Hiding When The Storm Broke" showcase the band's ability to straightforwardly rock, but most of Declaration consists of the sort of stirring anthems that they'd become famous for in their later works. Notable highlights from this disc: "Where were you Hiding," "Blaze of Glory," and "Howling Wind." You may have been passingly familiar with the Alarm in their salad days of the middle '80s, but even if you weren't, this disc is worth picking up. You won't be disappointed.

surprisingly diverse.......2007-04-03
this is the first Mayhem album i've ever owned, and i picked it up based entirely on the history of the band, history involving their first singers suicide, the stabbings within band members, burning churches down, and other murders connected to the band over the years. They sounded like the most metal band to ever have walked this earth (in a more pop-culture Dethklok sense), so i picked up this album expecting the blackest of black metal that would explode my bowels and eat my face off. I got so much more.
Yes, there are all the blood freezing screams and growls with the crushing sludge guitar and blast beats on the drums, but Mayhem has proven to me that they are not just another doom metal band. The album also contains some interesting ambient tracks, some spoken verses, some semi-powermetal screaming and even, most surprisingly, some industrial feel with programed beats and a slow dance floor feel, and some strange techno distortion on some of the vocals. This album is definitely worth checking out, and i suggest that you do.

Not a Rap Rock Fan, but this grooves big time!!!.......2006-04-11
Like the title says, this puppy grooves from start to finish. The guitar work and tone are excellent. You will find lots of driving riff's here and it's freaking awesome head banging stuff!! The rhythm section is tight and fat as hell. The lyrical content is very political and down right funny in spots (check out the very first track!!). A lot of what they say is very true if you give it some thought. Right wingers will love this stuff, tree hungers not so much!
This is one kick ass cd folks!!!!
Brilliant!.......2004-12-05
This has everything anyone could possibly want in metal. I don't think i've ever heard better guitar/drums/rap and hooks anywhere! This is my favorite cd by them! There's a reason why Dimebag and zakk wyld love this band!
Good Stuff, Good Mix.......2003-02-27
This CD contains one of the greatest mixes of metal, rap, and actual singing. You dont usually see any band pulling this off, infact the only other band i see doing anything like this is hed pe. Well overall the album is great, but it may take a few listenings to get used to because of the intese originality.(there is in no way reference to Rage, come on)I heard Hatebreed and I was hooked to the band. The riffs and vocals in that song are excelent, its probably one of the best on the album. Its a great song and when put into a CD packed full of other great songs, you cant get any better. The random clips of social outcries are a cool idea too. They get a message across. Thats probably the only thing that a person could see Rage doing.
-Peace
Not a chart topper...but absolutely Gruesome.......2002-04-13
...The high point of this band are the harmonies and the melodies. Three vocalists, with three distinct vocal styles...a rapper, a growler, and a whiskey throated howler. The music is more reminiscent of Iron Maiden than Korn and the rest of the rap core(check the song WALK THE LINE, and you'll agree). The band incorporates keyboards, samples, opera vocals, chamber music, along with a hard hitting beat, with razor sharp guitar chords. The songs are simple, yet hummable and fun to listen to. Not too taxing, but definitely delivered with some passion. Standouts...DRAWING BLOOD, RAISE THE DEAD MAN, EVILUTION, GIVE WAR A CHANCE (arguably the best track), FEEL IT COMING DOWN, WALK THE LINE. The band has obviously made its attempt to touch a variety of listeners and they succeed.
Another boring addition to the rapcore hybrid.......2001-01-10
You know how Rage Against the Machine was super-left before they disbanded? Imagine if they reunited, and then decided to become right-wing conservatives with an anti-valley agenda - they'd be Stuck Mojo.
When a band has confederate flags posted on the wall behind them in all their gigs, you know you're in for a problem. I've noticed many reviewers below the Mason-Dixon line like this kind of band, but sorry, we're civilized here in the North. Aside from the band's hypocritical "political message", the music is about as bland as a piece of stale bread. Same guitar riffs, same way of singing, boring drums, and a bass player who can't play a single chord on par with the guitar melodies, and probably has a low paying day job.
In short, don't get stuck with Mojo, spend your money in more useful ways.

OK music.......2006-04-13
This CD is listenable and has some nice music, but has nothing memorable. There is no rousing main theme that I expect from a soundtrack and many of the songs are not particularly good. If you are interested in music from this period, get the soundtracks to "Last of the Mohicans, The Patriot, and A&E's Revolution" (if you can find and afford that last one). Pass on this one.
Worth your time.......2006-01-31
A surprisingly "listenable" and quality work that rises above the documentary/drama series that it was created for.

bad dub - buy the original.......2000-12-28
First off, don't even think of buying this album before owning the original, the Abyssinians are a vocal group, the songs are great, hear them in their entirety. The dub mixing on this album is not credited to anyone, this is not a vintage dub album, these are modern dubs of vintage songs. The mixing is boring, predictable, and formulaic. Not creative at all, these mixes just leave you wanting the originals. The vocals are never echoed off into the distance; they play for a few bars and then just stop. Dub is not about turning instruments on and off; it is about weilding the instruments like swords, slicing through the sound and flowing through your head. A good dub will create new rhythms by using different combinations of the existing tracks to create something more than the sum of its parts. This album is just the original album, lacking different instruments at different parts. Completely predictable, the mixer of this album seems to just be following the 'rules of dub': play vocals for two bars, stop, play bass and drums for two bars, use reverb, stop, enter guitar for measure, stop, repeat. Dissapointing. And "declaration of dub"'s only version of the great song "declaration of rights" is not even from the original recording; new electronic-sounding instruments and NO vocals are the dub of the song. Weak.
aahhhh.......2000-09-18
It would be strongly advised to listen to the original "Satta Massagana" recordings before hearing these dub remakes to better bask in all of the beauty the Abyssinians have to offer, especially those beautiful voices and harmonies...
...BUT even if you don't, you can not help but be amazed by what this album has to offer. You still have the music pretty much intact, and tasty pieces of the roots reggae vocals that made Abyssinians songs what they were, on there to whet your appetite for more of this great trio.
For me, however, as much as I love dub albums, the Abyssinians are best heard in their full vocal glory, and dub, by definition, will only give you small glimpses into what was really going on in any session, song, etc. Enjoy this album for the dub it offers- its straight forward and has great moments on it- but also get the original "Satta Massagana" lp to fully understand the Abyssinians experience.
Beautiful...........2000-06-06
This is the disc that did it for me. One day, two years ago, I was high and listening to this album, and I had a realization.
Something like "Reggae's not about who can do what, or how fast they can solo. It's about channeling something deeper"
Since then my life has changed. This CD, especially "Thunderstorm Dub" - is profound.
