Hold On To God
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
From the time Joyce was a child singing at her father's (the late Minister David Cobb Sr.) church. Through the time she spent in grade and high school, doing talent shows and school dances and as she became a young woman, who led the choir at the church that she was a member, singing as a guest artist for other major churches and now as a mature, spiritual woman, Joyce's love for music was never ending. Her musical influences were artist like Areatha Franklin, Shirley Ceasar, Vannesa Bell Armstrong and a host of others. After singing other artist's songs for sometime, she began to envision lyrics and music on her own with the help of God. Joyce could not play a musical instrument, so she sang her songs the way she felt they should sound like. In 1984, she met and later married Brian R. Sirois, whom to her delight played guitar and drums. Brian had been playing drums since he was 11 yrs. old. He played in different Bands all through grade and high school. He started learning how to play guitar all the while he was playing drums with different groups. He began to fill-in with guitar on different occassions and became a accomplished guitar player. He started to write songs of his own and when Joyce and Brian met, it became apparent that they had a great combination. Combining her lyrics and musicals ideas with his talented songwriting, they began to write songs together. Brian, contacted Thomas Nawrot years later, who played with him in several different bands. Tom, a master musician (guitar, bass and keyboards) began his career as a young man, also playing in quite a few groups including a couple with Brian. He studied music theory in college and went on to become an accomplished musician. He agreed to work with them on their first Cd single ( Hold On To God ) and their music was complete. They are now working on a album together and it should be released in the near future.

Customer Reviews:
How could one not wish for more?.......2003-08-30
I love and hate this cd. I love it because it thrills whom ever listens to it with the beautiful but neglected works of Arthur Sullivan that were not written in partnership with W.S. Gilbert. The recording and the quality of the preformances are fantastic. I especially loved 'The Emerald Isle' and 'The Beauty Stone'. It filled me with the desire to consume these operas en total. Unfortunatly this is also the reason I hate it. It is quite difficult to find complete recordings of these operas (Besides the dreadull Pearl Label ones). From just a few scraps of the Emerald Isle I am in love with it, but seemingly doomed to either subpar recordings of nothing at all...woe to me!
An excellent but flawed disc.......2003-01-08
This is in many ways an excellent and very welcome addition to the growing range of recordings of Sullivan's "non-G" music. The items selected are enjoyable and are well-sung and well-performed. However, the disc is not generously filled. While this may well have been unavoidable, what is not is the decision to occupy a significant chunk of the limited time available with selections from "The Martyr of Antioch". While I personally am an admirer of this sacred music drama, it is just that, and from 1880 too. The fact that it was semi-staged for a few performances in the 1890s no more makes it an 1890s opera than (eg) a modern concert performance of "Ivanhoe" would turn the latter into a 21st century cantata! The inclusion of the "Martyr" items is all the more annoying in view of the lack of coverage of some bona fide 1890s operas, notably "The Rose of Persia". So one star off for poor judgement in this respect - but still a very worthwhile disc for Sullivanians!
Any Arthur Sullivan fan MUST buy this CD.......2000-02-22
Many people claim that outside his partnership with librettist Sir William Gilbert, Sir Arthur Sullivan was unable to write music that could be remembered. This recording has precisely the goal of making us remember what a truly marvellous composer Sullivan really was. All the recordings on this CD are excerpts from Sullivan "operas" written without Gilbert's involvement. Even though most of these pieces (apart from "Ho! Jolly Jenkin!") are now completely forgotten, hidden behind the success of the Savoy Operas, such as Sullivan's "Mikado" or "HMS Pinafore", written in collaboration with Gilbert, they deserve more recognition.
All pieces are sung by recognized Gilbert and Sullivan singers, and their professionalism is at its usual level.
The two flaws that I can find to this album are: 1) It is too short (approximatively 50 minutes) but I suspect it was the result of lack of funds. 2) The booklet makes no mention whatsoever of Gilbert, even though his influence on Sullivan's musical career was essential. Gilbert had collaborated on the adaptation of "The Martyr of Antioch", but is not even mentioned. Furthermore, Sullivan might have never considered operetta (or light opera) as an adequate musical genre (for Sullivan, in his early years, wanted to achieve fame as a "serious" composer) had it not been for the success of "Trial by Jury" and other successful operettas all written during his partnership with Gilbert.
But these are just mere details. The music is impeccable, so I encourage everyone, especially all the Savoyards out there who only know Sullivan's music through his collaboration with Gilbert, to buy this CD.
An excellent recording, long overdue.......1999-03-11
This CD spotlights Sullivan's non-Gilbert works, and, as such, is full of surprises. Still, the producers seemed to have decided to put in as much material that is "Sullivanesque" as possible. "Ho jolly jenkin" from Ivanhoe is probably the most familiar, and perhaps should have been replaced by something else from the same work. The biggest failing is the neglect of The Rose of Persia in favor of The Emerald Isle. The selections from The Emerald Isle that appear on this recording are not even Sullivan's arrangements, since he died before he finished it. Besides, The Rose of Persia is much better, both as drama and as music. The biggest surprises are "The gay hussar" from The Chieftain and the two selections from The Martyr of Antioch. The madrigal from Haddon Hall is performed a little too slow. The pace of "The sun's in the sky" may be too brisk for those familiar with earlier recordings, but I like it. "Ride on" (The Beauty Stone) is perhaps the most uncharacteristic selection. The soloists are okay, though the tenor creaks once or twice. All in all, a recording not to be missed by any G&S fan. Maybe the next time a recording like this is undertaken, we'll get an entire work -- how long must we wait to hear The Martyr of Antioch in its entirety in a modern recording?! (And yes, I know The Rose of Persia is due out this year . . . .)
A ground-breaking release.......1999-02-21
This is the recording which finally proves that Sullivan's lesser-known operas should be rated more highly than they are. There are no poor excerpts on this recording, but those that particularly stand out are When the Budding Bloom of May (Haddon Hall), both items from The Beauty Stone and the Finale from The Emerald Isle. Those people who think that Sullivan was not much of a composer away from Gilbert should be pleasantly surprised. Hopefully, this recording will prove successful enough to encourage some enterprising recording company to release complete professional recordings of Sullivan's unjustly neglected works.

Hold On To God.......2002-01-16
This song is the Premo of Christian songs. It is a Artistic Musical Masterpiece. The song itself is a testimony of the artist's life. If we are to accomplish anything in our Christian lives, that we have set as goals, we need to "Hold On To God".The lyrics are very well written and the music is rivoting, soothing and inspirational. After listening to this song, I feel closer to God and a renewed relationship with the Holy Ghost.
Joyce Sirois is a fantastic new artist. She sings with a whole lot of feeling and has a excellant voice. I can't wait till the album comes out. My overall opinion on this song is. I definitely recommend everybody add this to your collection of Christian Hits.
hold on to god!!!.......2001-02-16
This is a fresh new entry into the contempary/christian market. A combination of smooth lyrics and stirring beats that make this not just a song, but a testimony. Joyce sirois sings about the trials that we all go through at times on this christian journey and the realization that we must all come to. The only way that we can make it is to "Hold on to GOD".
Hold On To God.......2001-02-16
Very enlightening. Music is very good, along with the voices of both the lead singer (Joyce) and her husband (Brian) singing background. This song will inspire anyone to attempt to accomplish something they have always wanted to do. Both Joyce and Brian have their own stories to tell in the lyrics, if you listen carefully. I recommend this to anyone who likes Contempory Christian music. The sound they have created is unique.

Very Disappointing.......2004-03-11
The only thing I regret, is that I didn't read the review by Jakgt before I bought this CD. I have an adjective to describe this musical. It rhymes with 'rap' and starts with 'c'
A beautiful game, a beautiful show. It is missed in USA........2002-10-02
The was one of the last shows I saw in England in the summer of 2001 - pre 9/11. I suggest the previous reviewer go back and listen to the words of wisdom when love triumphs over hate (and vice versa).
I believe this to be the most simplistic of Webber & Co.'s musicals and to me, it really works. Twenty people, a bare stage and boundless energy in the singing and dancing give this musical its edge before you start thinking about its politics. It reminded me of how youth is wasted on silly stuff, much in the way WEST SIDE STORY did a two generations ago.
We are not a soccer country. Many Americans know no more about Ireland than what happens on St. Patrick's Day (Green beer?). But we do understand sport, love, sex, loyalty, betrayal and internicine strife. Just image white and black instead of English and Irish, and you might get the picture.
Did I mention that the music is wonderful? Lyrical? Did I mention that the music was "singable" (people left the theatre singing)? Sometimes, we need a little sparkle without the glitz. If I could get away directing this musical with Palestinians and Israelis -- and still make it work (because it would), I would choose this one to direct in any university in America. The London production was that good. The music is that good. The book is that good.
Take back the fangs and listen to the music. Be innocent again, and listen to a simple musical with straightforward motives. I hear that it will never come to the US. Unfortunate. It is surely needed.
If you like musical theatre, buy the CD. If you are inspired when soccer players defy gravity, then imagine such deftness of foot in a musical and buy the CD. If you are curious about England and Ireland, buy the CD. If you want to be conscientious about world events aesthetically recreated, but still want to enjoy something soooo beautiful in its intent and execution, buy the CD. It is worth every cent.
I found it...the worst musical written.......2002-09-21
I truly believe that this is the worst musical ever put on CD. Though I am certain that there are worse shows, this one is hereby nominated as the most truly ugly, vulgar and truly unlikeable on record. RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!
