Customer Reviews:
Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17
Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!
Its all Christmas.......2007-01-09
It reminded me of Christmas as a child. I played this all throughout the holidays.
A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11
This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.
My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).
Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.
cd reviews.......2006-01-15
this cd was very good, much recommended
Poor Quality.......2005-12-05
The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

ecclectic, low budget, wholehearted.......2006-06-03
I'm just responding to the guy who thought he was clever by saying that "they couldn't afford a vocal processor..."
Apparently you've never heard of an artist named Donovan, although you parents surely have. The vocal styling on the song "You Are My Son" is a tribute to Donovan's vocal style, and actually as original and courageous as a tribute gets.
So-so........2002-01-09
Eh, that's it? I've listened to this a few times and just can't get into it. Christian music has enough warbly ballads and mellow stuff. If I hadn't gotten and listened to "Superhero" before this CD, I would never have bought it. (Usually, it's a band's sophomore effort that stinks! But, in S&T's case it's the next one which peels the paint off the walls.) The production quality is very good. It doesn't sound too echoey or pre-packaged. The singing's good, but I'm not sure what their style is? All in all, skip past this one and buy "Superhero".
Great CD.......2001-12-27
This CD deserves nothing but praise. The songs on the album are diverse and unique. I had a chance to meet the band this Winter at NCYC in INDIANAPOLIS (HEY BRAD, love the necklace)they are the coolest guys you'll ever meet. They are not stuck up or selfish. They want to hear from their fans and they love to talk to them. They rule, I don't want to hear anything ad about them ever. Chris also has the greatest wife and son in the world.

4 Stars...here's why........2001-07-17
Without attacking Ben Van Meter and with all due respect to his opinions, I would like to give the "other side of the story" as it were.
On the song, "You Are My Son", Chris Padgett's unique vocal style comes through in a more clear way because it's the slowest song on the CD. I did not find the vocals a product of faulty production especially since it is produced by two of the best in the business, John and Dino Elefante. However, Padgett's vocal styling is definitely not for everyone. Those of you who like "normal" vocals will not want to purchase this CD. I also did not find the music style to fall short of its target audience. Scarecrow and Tinmen are not that far away from secular pop rock stars Vertical Horizon. However, the sounds are not identical and a fan of one band is not guaranteed to be a fan of the other.
Scarecrow and Tinmen ultimely deliver a CD worth purchasing for those of you who are more adventurous. "Scarecrow and Tinmen" and "Dreamy Light" are the strongest radio friendly songs on the CD while "You Are My Son" delves deep into the love God has for all of his children. On their debut release, S&T delivers a solid effort. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. Is this CD a complete loss? Absolutely not.
Side note: Their sophomore release "Superhero" is the result of the band coming into their own musically and contains the hit "God is Good".
1 Star...here's why..........2001-05-17
Of the songs I have heard off of Scarecrow and Tinmen's first album, I thought all of it was trash. What do I mean by trash? Well, as a style, it sounds like something that organic records possibly fabricated in an attempt to appeal to a certain target market, which I can only presume is a youth audience of 8-12. Supposedly it was meant to be something that college students and highschool students would like, but it's something many of us laugh at. In the song "You are my son", it sounds like the band had no money for a vocal effects processor, so the lead singer had to echo himself "You-you are-are my my my son son". Really annoying basically. I do believe that the singer had good heart with the song, but musically bombed. I like a broad range of music, so I don't think this is simply an issue of "not my style". I didn't mean to discredit the other people who evaluated this cd with 5 stars, but I'm just trying to make sure you're happy with what you spend that (money) on. If you don't like Scarecrow and Tinmen, then check out these (real) Christian bands: Deliriou5?, Jars of Clay, POD, Project 86, Plumb, Grammatrain, Fold Zandura, Fono, ect. Maybe Scarecrow and Tinmen cleaned up their act (I don't know), so possibly check out their sophomore release...

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Two Discs -- No Risks.......2005-04-25
I just finished listening to this set and was reminded that, even though No Place Like Home (NPLH) was recorded during a strange period in Big Country's history, Stuart Adamson's songs reflect a growing maturity in terms of lyrics (subject matter), music (varying styles), and, as far as the way the band handles Adamson's songs, arrangements (not so electric guitar heavy).
"We're Not in Kansas," which is also featured on The Buffalo Skinners CD, released shortly after NPLH, is an indictment (a rough one using extremely effective Wizard of Oz imagery) of the shallowness and greed of the American way of life. The sing-songy "Beautiful People," on the other hand, is a very upbeat celebration of diversity. When I first heard it, I thought it was satirical. Adamson's songs, at least his earlier songs, were several shades of deep dark, but this song suggests a slightly different attitude towards those with whom he comes into contact.
My favorite song on the CD, "Leap of Faith," makes me think of a cool Motown song, but one that's been mixed up with a Springsteenesque redemption theme. It's such a good song that alone, it's truly worth the price of the CD. The fact that the triumphant "Leap of Faith" is surrounded by the sad "Dynamite Lady," the scathing "Republican Party Reptile," the mournful "Ships" (a full band version of "Ships" can be heard on The Buffalo Skinners CD, which I mentioned earlier), the pleading "Heart of the World," and so many winners makes it a bona fide classic, albeit one that, unfortunately, most probably will never hear.
Peace in Our Time (PIOT) is not a favorite Big Country CD of mine. However, having said that, there are some songs that, in my opinion, rank amongst their finest. The lead-off track, "King of Emotion," is one of those infectious anthems, but the anthemic quality is not one that tries to provoke people to get out in the streets. It's one that tries to provoke whomever's listening to seek love within him/herself. It's rare that an anthem can do that (separate the personal from the collective), but "King of Emotion" somehow does it and succeeds. The title track is also an anthem, but one in the more traditional sense. It exhorts whomever's in power to hand peace over -- "Give us peace in our time/While I have a life to live/Then I have no life to give." Why give one's life over in a war and be a dead hero? While it may be absolutely necessary to risk one's life, depending on the situation, the guy singing this song doesn't want to die on a battlefield along with somebody he himself might've killed that he didn't even know. This guy wants to live, grow, develop, and affect people. Why not let him? Give him peace in his time!
Lastly, my favorite song on PIOT is the wonderful, rejuvenating "River of Hope." Even though it's somewhat bleak in the sense that whilst the river of hope will be found, somebody's inevitably going to screw it up for everyone, it still uniquivocally states that the river exists, and that's the important thing. There's always hope, and Mark Brzezicki's (drums) and Tony Butler's (bass guitar) bull's eye rhythm pulsates and percolates like such a river would. The melody and the imagery are perfect together, and every time I hear it, I want to dance -- preferably near the river so I can jump in at some point.
Stuart Adamson's and Bruce Watson's guitar interplay is something of which all guitarists should take note. Butler and Brzezicki give new meaning to the word "bottom" (musically speaking, it's a good meaning -- the best). As a band, these guys were unstoppable. Their music came from a collective heart and mind that never lost faith in the human potential for greatness, whatever the circumstance. I'm angry with Adamson for dying, but I will also be eternally grateful that he wrote the songs he did. They will not die. As one contemporary of Adamson aptly put it, "There will always be a place in our hearts for Big Country."

There is no better band than Cornbread.......2003-11-09
WOW - what a CD and band! They have a style completely all their own, while still deeply rooted in cross over pop country. The only thing wrong with the CD, is that it is so hard to find and I would love more tracks. But then again, the best things in life are worth waiting for. It seems that the mighty and powerful Los Angeles music folks just don't know how to promote the band because they are not in a nice neat little package and have they do not draw inside the lines. Cornbread is the band in movie Sweet Home Alabama, and so many people loved their three songs in the movie, including the carnival street scene at night where they perform Sweet Home Alabama, but when you buy the Soundtrack, they left Cornbread out in the cold. Well, I am a loyal fan, and I know what I like when I hear it, and I know Cornbread is not a typical band or typical sound, but simply the best. My only regret, is that they they have been unsuccessful at getting the 3 songs from Sweet Home Alabama on a CD, and that their CD's are too short, because when you start listening, you crave for more, but the CD ends. Also, becaue the label does not promote this band, so few have a clue about the band. It was the same for John Mayer and outher artists. The lable promotes once you demand their CD's. I believe in this band, and I believe you will feel the same way.

I'm glad I found this band. I like the "No Place Like Home" CD more each time I listen to it. This is a definite buy..... Enjoy them!!

From the opening keyboards of "Mona Lisa's Smile" to the closing riffs of "Alabama Home," the No Place Like Home EP is a mini-masterpiece of local music. Already a huge hit in their hometown and surrounding area, Cornbread is surely set for the big time as soon as that elusive record deal pulls through. Standout tracks are "Mona Lisa's Smile," one of two songs produced by Shawn Mullins which is already a huge hit on Columbus radio station WCGQ, and "No Place Like Home," a tune/tale about making it in the music world.
"When the magazine is askin' what it used to be like when you packed 'em in the aisles with your name up in lights, would you ask for a refund, baby, on the soul that you sold?"
