Within Temptation keeps getting better.......2007-07-16
This CD is great! Each CD Within Temptation releasese gets better and better. I discovered this group with their 2nd album The Silent Force and really loved it. This CD even exceeded my expectations.
A solid effort.......2007-07-15
I've been a fan of Within Temptation since I heard the amazing song "Angels" from their 2004 CD "The Silent Force." "The Heart of Everything," the Dutch metal band's fourth CD, shows definite progression while going into harder territory. This will be their first CD officially released in the U.S. and it does seem that the material is tailored a little more to American tastes than their previous works. That, however, is not necessarily a bad thing.
The focus of Within Temptation has always been lead singer Sharon den Adel. A natural untrained soprano who can sound amazingly like Kate Bush minus the screeching, Sharon still brings the angelic etherealness that is her trademark but shows off her lower range as well, particularly on "The Howling," "Final Destination" and "Our Solemn Hour," all of which stomp in the best possible way. I still don't quite understand why so many people believe that the first single "What Have You Done" sounds like Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life." It's true that the song is much more "commercial" than what WT usually does (although I still believe that "Angels" could have been a monster hit in America had it been marketed right) and both songs are essentially male/female duets, but the two songs sound nothing alike. If there is an Evanescence-like moment on the CD it's the closing song "Forgiven", which REALLY sounds like "My Immortal" both musically and lyrically. It's still a beautiful song, as is "Frozen," which in spite of a horribly overwrought video also has real American single potential. "The Heart of Everything" isn't perfect--the plodding "The Truth Beneath The Rose" and "All I Need" drag things down--but it's still one of the better CDs I've heard this year. WT got their first real U.S. exposure opening for Lacuna Coil this spring, but I have a feeling we're going to start seeing a lot more of them.
New WT Fan from USA.......2007-07-12
The short of the long is that if you are from the USA, this Netherland based band won't be out of your vocabulary for long. Don't hesitate to purchase this album as it's sure to be liked! Also, I have grown on every track on the album within 3 listens. This one gets 4.5 stars!
I am SO impressed and hopefully Within Temptation succeeds in their release here. I am so grateful that I stumbled across this group during a internet search. I listened to a few tracks on their myspace before buying this album and the 2004 "Silent Force". I can see after reading reviews of WT loyal fans the difference in the two albums; however they are both excellent and I see no room for dissappointment (Yes, I do like this 2007 album better than 2004 as it's more rock). Also, I have read loyal fans blogs and their dislike of reference comparing them to Evanescence, however, we don't have any other band to compare to for that awesome fantasy spine chilling night owl full moon gothic feel. They do not sound like Evanescence and you can't compare sharon and amy but they have the same fantasy like feel in a totally different sound that is excellent!
How this band has fallen!.......2007-07-10
Its hard to believe this is the same group that created the amazing album "Mother Earth". I had to keep checking the liner notes to make sure I had the right band. WTF happened? After the slightly disappointing "Silent Force" album I hoped they would get back on track. I now appreciate how good Silent Force was. Oh well, I'm off to the used record store to get rid of this mess.
Must have for Within Temptation fans! It does not disappoint!.......2007-07-03
First matter at hand, do not listen to any of these so called fans that say negative things about "The Silent Force". It is by far an awesome album in which I loved every single song. So the next album had a lot on its plate in trying to step up to the caliber of Silent Force. Fortunately, The Heart of Everything does just about that!
Tracks:
1. Howling - Let's just say I cranked up the volume in preparation for the experience. When the Howling came blasting on with the haunting choir and Sharon's dark voice, it sent chills down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. This song is Within Temptation in true Silent Force mode with the music, choir, and Sharon's voice soaring high and beautifully. The song about killing and descent into madness definitely suits the music and singing. Rating - 10/10
2. What Have You Done - I was a bit put off at first that WT went with a guest singer in Keith Caputo on a song. I don't even know who that is. But surprisingly the guy doesn't have a bad voice (although one appearance is enough). I admit like the rest of the reviewers that this song sounds a lot like something Evanescence would do. But the issue is that I firmly believe Evanescence's last album to be a complete failure. This song is pretty good in tempo and dark mood in showing Evanescence how it is REALLY done. Rating - 8/10
3. Frozen - The first ballad of the album, but it is really a hard ballad when you really look at it. A haunting song about sacrifice that sees Sharon soaring with her voice in lamenting quality that will send more chills through you. As you can tell by this point as I did listening, this album has a darker overtone to it so far. Rating - 9/10
4. Our Solemn Hour - WOW! Just when you think another dark song would come out, this song literally explodes into a soaring melody of choir and Sharon's voice. I was a little put off at first by the guy talking a little in the background but you either learn to tune it out or accept it (it only happens at a few short points really, that's all). I accepted it as it fits the song well in talking about the destruction mankind is wreaking havoc in its sinfulness and Sharon pleading for the Holy Spirit to redeem and save us. Just the choir chanting "Sanctus Espiritus" is mind blowing! Then Sharon belting it out with everything she's got with her voice will blow it away even further! By far my favorite song on this album and would receive a 100 rating if I could! Unbelievable! Rating - 10/10!
5. The Heart of Everything - This song actually rather surprised me. Most all of us are used to Sharon soaring with her voice, but in this one she brings her voice down lower than I've every heard her before. And she pulls it off really well! Probably one of the most gothy songs on the album, reaching back to their earlier days with some of the subtle growling in the background. The darkest song yet to be sure. Rating - 8/10
6. Hand of Sorrow - If Our Solemn Hour wasn't on this album, this song would easily be the hit of the album. It is much like the song mentioned but with less choir. In Hand of Sorrow you can hear Sharon more clearly in her melodic voice. Again she cuts loose with her vocals in this incredible song about a tortured soul torn between his love and his oath of honor in which often makes pay the price in doing terrible things. Another hit! 10/10
7. The Cross - Track number seven isn't 'lucky number seven' for Within Temptation. This is the one song on the whole album where they tripped and fell flat on their face. It starts off with Sharon high pitched like Mariah Carey before you hear her "Ah ah ah ah ah aaaaahhhhh!" repeatedly! It sounds like some weird laughing that is seriously distracting and annoying. I gritted my teeth trying to listen through the whole song but I only made it 2/3 of the way through. WT would best be wise to avoid this kind of style like the plague in the future. Rating - 3/10
8. Final Destination - WT gets off the ground and dusts themselves off as they redeem themselves with this track about escaping death but leading into paranoia about death around every corner and how easily fragile life can be snatched away. Sharon once again drops her voice down but not so much of the time in this one as she is soon back to singing high with her angelic voice. Rating - 9/10
9. All I Need - The first real ballad of the album. No choir. Very little guitars. Just Sharon singing passionately with drum and orchestra about the hope found in love. A big contrast compared to the darkness of most of the album but a really nice touch. In this we get to see Sharon's versatility in being able to sing a great love ballad. Rating - 8/10
10. The Truth Beneath the Rose - Back to the darkness we go! The choir never ceases to fail as they explode into a haunting chant before Sharon comes in to sing this song about the inner turmoil and battle a person faces with the evil inside oneself while praying for forgiveness for sins committed. The longest song on the album is what it ends up being but you barely notice as the whole song captivates you all the way through! Outstanding! Rating - 10/10
11. Forgiven - Get your tissues out for this one cause you WILL need it. This song has only Sharon's voice, violin, and a Piano in a haunting song of grief over losing a loved one and being left behind. I was left in tears by the end of the song. Her voice is so bitterly sweet that it will no doubt touch most everyone's heart. It brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it, reminding me of loved ones I miss so much. Simply Beautiful doesn't begin to describe it. Rating - 10/10
Overall this album is much like a mixture of Silent Force and Mother Earth that really makes for memorable songs. While it falls just short of the incredible album Silent Force, it is another fine installment by Within Temptation that will keep me as a fan for a long time! This album is a must have for other fans and for anyone interested in this group. I love it!

Can't wait to get it!.......2007-07-17
My 12yr old introduced me to WT via her love of Anime and similar sites. Very similar to Enya, Enigma and Evanescence, yet vocals and instrumentals VASTLY more mesmirizing and worthy! So much so I bought 2. One for each of us! Looking forward to it! Her's is a surprise.
Amazing!!.......2007-07-16
This is Within Temptation at their best! Every part of this cd has feeling to it. I'f your a fan of bands like evanescence I recommend Within Temptation..and really this band holds their own. GREAT CD!! GET IT!!
Worth the money .......2007-07-04
I looked everywhere for this CD. Trust me, you can't find it. That said it's one of the best CD's I have bought in the past few years. The vocalist is compelling, and the overall sound is great. They're a lot like Nightwish soundwise, but the lyrics are much better in my opinion. Worth the money any day.
I shouldn't have spoken so soon........2007-06-06
I've heard only a few songs from Within Temptation and had avoided them for years after. They didn't gain much attention from me because I wasn't impressed by what I heard (I was expecting a bombastic first impression). I was wrong to do so because I took a listen to them again not too long ago by watching the video for "Memories" and I became highly interested in them. I downloaded "Jillian" and after hearing an awesome intro, I was enraptured completely. I ordered this cd without hearing the rest of the tracks. I rarely do such a thing. "Pale" and "Memories" are gems.
This album has a high range of hauntingly imaginative atmosphere that few bands, Leaves' Eyes in particular, can produce. While having a solid theme to this album, W.T. put various emotions and atmospheres into each song. This is a good trait because it keeps us interested for a long time and usually has the listener repeating the tracks. Why didn't I see this sooner? I am always eager to hear different bands and different material.
This will go into my ever growing music collection.
I recommend Leaves' Eyes because, they too, are able to grow on to the listener, while keeping them in a prolonged trance. I regret the fact that I have avoided this band. Might I also mention that Sharon actually does have a wonderful voice. I have another lady to grace my tons of Anneke Van Giersbergen, Liv Kristine, and Cristina Scabbia vocal contributions.
Wonderful Music.......2007-05-07
For those who are drawn towards any music like Enigma, Enya, or Evanescence, this cd has alot of great tracks. I recommend it to anyone who has such taste in music.

A Personal Favorite---BUT..........2007-05-05
...THIS SEMI IS COPY PROTECTED. To get around the copy protection don't install the utility program. It won't play in Media Player, but you can use other programs to do everything. This is very similar to Nightwish's Century Child. The band weaves numerous classical chord structures throughout the disc. The band is very talented and they really do push the limits here. The selections range from Ice Queen to In Perfect Harmony which almost sounds like Kenny Loggins' Return To Pooh Corner. Personally, I don't care for the last 2 bonus cuts, but otherwise this is a very compelling release.
Okay........2007-03-02
Not WT's best by any means, but at least this album has personality unlike "The Silent Force". Theres a few good songs such as "Our Farewell", "Ice Queen", "Mother Earth" and "Caged". But the rest of the CD does not follow. "Perfect Harmony" sounds like a pre-school, sing-along song, and "Never-Ending Story" sounds like a folk song gone horribly wrong. All in all, the album isn't terrible...but it isnt the best.
"Mother Earth".......2007-01-31
This is an excellent album. If you are a fan of "metal only" this is probably not for you. It is fully orchistrated and highly theatrical. The musical quality is fabulous. This is a theme album that will strongly appeal to affectations other than Christian. It's hard to put this group into a catagory. Theatrical Goth Metal is the closest I can come to a description. I personally love this CD and feel it is a very strong addition to my collection of Heavy Metal that I've been buying since 1964.
Remarkable Discovery.......2007-01-04
My wife has been after me to buy this for what must be two years now, since she heard the title track on the Matt Drudge Show. I bought it as a slightly late birthday present, and she has listened to it at least three times. Wonderful stuff.
what is this junk?.......2006-11-10
I'll give you the bottom line up front. Sharon den Adel, the lead vocalist, while very talented is not not suited for this type of work. She is blatantly flat or sharp at varying aspects of Within Temptation's songs including "Mother Earth." They do not even have very catchy riffs. Don't buy their album. If you like metal buy metal. If you like emo...kill yourself. If you want to be rocked, either make your own music or find something that does not suck on the surface as well as below it.

Customer Reviews:
This is symphonic metal.......2007-07-10
Within Temptation's The Heart of Everything is definitely a turn around from the band's previously released album and once again, the Dutch sextet takes Goth, metal and 14th Century renaissance music to a whole different level allowing it to perfectly accompany lead singer Sharon Den Adel's voice. In this album however, Sharon shows her versatility as a singer. There are times when she sings with immense amounts of power like in "The Howling" and others like a siren enchanting her subjects as in "The Cross". Sometimes she sings emotionally and sensitively like in the title track. The band has also enhanced "Our Solemn Hour" with clips from Winston Churchill's "Be Ye Men of Valor" speech making it sound much more 14th century.
The bands hit single "What Have You Done" with guest singer Keith Caputo has been a huge success all over Europe. With lyrics "I, I've been waiting for someone like you/But now you are slipping away...oh /Why, why does fate make us suffer/There's a curse between us, between me and you" reminds us of all those heartbreaks we have suffered when we thought we found the one. If you are new to the Goth/symphonic metal crowd or are just looking for something new, Within Temptation's The Heart of Everything is definitely for you.

One of the Best Albums to date.......2007-06-27
I really like this album. I highly recommend it. Musically it is awesome, the lyric are amazing, and you can really feel the passion in each song. There is not a weak song the album. Every track is great. My wife and I can't stop listening to it.
Unimpressive pop music.......2007-06-13
Unfortunately, like Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation has given in to the ... temptation (sorry, I had to) of making pop music that the masses will swarm to and just as quickly leave for the next thing. The songs I heard were completely forgettable. Lots of smash, crash, boom. No music. Granted, Sharon's vocals are more spectacular than ever. Not even a hint of the imperfection of the prior albums.
I saw them with Lacuna Coil a few weeks ago, and the songs they played off this album simply slid right through my head, and left me even more eager to get to their absolutely wonderful finale, the Mother Earth/Ice Queen combination. It was great to hear these songs played by a tighter, more mature band, with Sharon's voice at the level it has reached now. Stunning!
Awesome.......2007-06-10
This is the fourth cd by Within Temptation. And it is just as good as the others. The music and lyrics are breathtaking as is Sharon's vocals. Also the cd is interactive with your computer.
Best Yet.......2007-06-09
This is simply their best effort to date. This is my 3rd album from WT and I wasn't sure anything could top The Silent Force but Heart of Everything is awesome. I've listened to it every day since I got it (50 days now). Tracks such as The Howling and What Have You Done are pulse pounding. Frozen and The Cross are 2 of my favorites. Sharon's vocals are as great as ever and Robert's guitar work is simply kick@ss (especially on the title track). I can't wait to see them Live.

Album Description
It's not unusual to see someone leave her high tech job these days to seek out new adventures. But how many of them wind up performing on the "Late Show with David Letterman" less than six months later?
By the time San Francisco-based singer/songwriter/pianist Vienna Teng, 26, quit her full-time software engineering job at Cisco Systems in 2002, she had signed with independent label Virt Records and was preparing for her full-length CD release, "Waking Hour." She was soon opening for such artists as Shawn Colvin and Joan Osborne. With her graceful melodies and evocative lyrics, Vienna has garnered critical acclaim and a rapidly growing legion of fans throughout the world.
Vienna has returned with her sophomore release, "Warm Strangers," a diverse collection of lush, melodic songs, incorporating Vienna's classical background and folk sensibilities within a contemporary pop framework. Whereas "Waking Hour," written during the high school and college years, was mostly autobiographical, "Warm Stranger"s marks Vienna's bold leap into fiction. Orchestral and acoustic landscapes, using everything from string quartets to slide guitars, provide an inviting sonic backdrop for her short stories of love, death, struggle and hope.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely amazing.......2007-05-29
My favorite CD out of her three. "Harbor" has always been my favorite song, and the rest of her CD is amazingly strong and graceful. There is even a hidden Chinese song at the end of her CD!
My favorites from this CD are "Harbor", the hidden track, "My Medea", "Passage" and "The Atheist Christmas Carol"
A pleasure from beginning to End.......2007-02-22
Let me start this review off by saying that I am not a big pop fan at this point in my life. That is, I listen and play more jazz that I do pop stuff. That being said, I try to keep my ears open. A friend recently gave Teng's third CD, which captured my attention, so I went back for more. This 2nd CD is even better than her third. The songs are well written, the production is at the right scale, meaning it doesn't overshadow her understated style, and the sound of the recording is quite lovely. Her lyrics are intelligent but not deliberately oblique. There is absolutely nothing about this record that sounds the least bit self conscious or mannered. This is in a word, the work of a natural artist who has already found her sound. Amazingly, she was only about 26 when she made this recording.
This is music to live with. At first one listens to the sound of her voice and her picture perfect piano accompaniments. Then the stories reveal themselves. Teng is a skillful story teller and a very adept songwriter. Some of it reminds me a little of early Joni Mitchell, but not enough to label her as derivative. It appears as if Teng is an important new talent, and I for one am looking forward to watching her develop into the major musical force she is already showing signs of maturing into.
Great singer, songwriter & pianist.......2007-02-12
If you are looking for some great personal music, look no further. I disovered her by accidentially changing to some obscure channel. I was hooked instantly. Her music is very mesmerizing. In many respects, she reminds me of Tori Amos. Her voice and piano playing is incredible, but her songs seem more accessable. Both CD's are equally good.
Late to the party.......2007-02-04
OK...so, I don't know where I've been, but I recently got this album and it's amazing. Crystal clean vocals....interesting lyrics....great songs. I'm blown away how good this is. Why isn't this girl as big as Tori Amos or Kate Bush? Feather Moon starts the album out somber and slow, but then it picks up with Harbor and Hope On Fire...and it just gets better from there. If you like good music, buy this one. Better late than never!
A must have CD!.......2007-01-21
I never tire of listening to Vienna Teng's music, and this compilation of her songs is great. 'Safe Harbor' is my absolute favorite, but all of her songs are wonderful. She is so talented! You will not be sorry you bought this incredible CD.

Album Description
The highly anticipated full-length follow-up to 2002's "Drunken Lullabies". Flogging Molly continue to breed traditional Irish influences and heavy-hearted storytelling with brazen, barn-burning punk rock. At the same time, the ballads that have become welcome staples to their live show (giving the audience a break from the frenzy) are also stronger than ever. Look for a couple surprises this time around, such as a Cajun vibe on "Tomorrow Comes A Day Too Soon", and a guest appearance by Lucinda Williams on "Factory Girls".

this is definetly an amazing irish cd with a unique twist of punk.....it is truly amazing and you will enjoy every second of it
Excellent!.......2007-05-19
Flogging Molly is perhaps the most *fun* band I have ever listened to. From their lyrics to their back beat, just about any song by them is sure to help you out with that adrenaline rush, which is why I have them set as my go-to band when I step onto the Eliptical at the gym. Within A Mile Of Home really delivered, even with a slightly different sound, and I was so pleasantly surprised to hear the old Irish drinking song "Whisky On A Sunday" threaded into "Factory Girls" and "Tobacco Island" is just fantastic. I buy Flogging Molly CD's for my friends as birthday and Christmas presents because I'm always trying to spread the good word about this group.
Irish rock.......2007-04-05
I saw this band live at RFK and immediately ordered two of the CDs. They were fantastic live, and I love their sound on the CDs. I'm going to get more to give as gifts to my Irish relatives!
fantastic album.......2007-02-06
Not much needs to be said:
Dave King and company know what works for them, and they continue to do it in this album. Dave, while sporting a little more pudge (and in fact, lately he looks like a young version of Colonel Sanders) still wails, keens, pleas, and shouts as well as ever.
It's hard to call some tracks "favorites" because I like them all, but "whistles the wind" and "Seven Deadly Sins" do seem to stick in my head.
If you like the Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, or any other Flogging Molly, you will like "Within a Mile of Home"
Same Ol' Flogging Molly.......2006-12-18
I heard someone attack this CD for being more of the same. Well, I give it five stars because it is more of the same. Let's face it, when the first two albums were incredible, there is not a problem in following the same recipe. The two standout songs are "Screaming at the Wailing Wall" and the title track. This is the only band that I will ever mention in the same breath as the Pogues.

The pop charts were once regularly haunted by the melodramatic musings of pianists like Liberace, Ferrante and Teicher and Roger Williams, a sensibility that eventually gave way to the more New Age-y affectations of George Winston and his fellow Wave-format-friendly ivory ticklers. But if producer David Foster has his way, young Phoenix native William Joseph will do for instrumental piano music what the Foster-mentored Josh Groban, Michal Buble and Renee Olstead have done for classical crossover and crooner revivalism. Joseph is blessed with a forceful technique and an ear for drama (he composed the theme for his hometown NHL Phoenix Coyotes when just a teen) that recalls Williams in his prime, and approaches his material with a kitsch-be-damned, crowd-pleasing verve that occasionally invokes 1970s' prog-rock excesses (the artist's own title track and "Piano Fantasy") without apology. Bolstered by Foster's usual back-row-of -the-balcony production sensibility, Joseph tackles everything from the classics ("Ave Maria," "Eternal"'s reworking of Chopin) to Led Zeppelin (a version of "Kashmir" that's as over-the-top as the original), Kansas (vocalist Garou guests on the bathos-drenched "Dust in the Wind") and even Muse ("Butterflies and Hurricanes" as MOR melodrama) with supreme confidence, if considerably less subtlety. --Jerry McCulley

A TRUE FIVE STAR ALBUM IN A BEWILDERING SEA OF THE UNDESERVING.......2007-07-07
I know it's not going to happen but I think that a one to ten star rating system would make it far easier to rate an album more accurately. The reason I bring this up on this particular review is because I know that from time to time I too am guilty of giving a five star rating to an album that perhaps doesn't quite deserve it. However, this is not one of those times; this IS a five star album.
This album is first-rate in all respects, from Sharon's beautiful vocal performance and the guitars - which were all recorded in Holland, to the drumming - which was recorded in Belgium, to the full orchestra and choir - which were recorded in Russia, with each recording location being chosen for its individual capacity to contribute to this recording. It is obvious that no corners were cut in the production of this album, and it is clearly evident upon first listen, this album sounds magnificent. This album starts off brilliantly, has some even higher points along the way, and then ends even more brightly than it began. This is a very impressive and rewarding album, and has become one of my favorites. And for me this is very high praise to be sure, primarily because a band with a female singer will just about never make it to an album that I would rate as one of my favorites. However, this is certainly nothing against female singers, I just prefer the sound of a singer like Brian Johnson, Dio or Bruce Dickinson. (That doesn't make me gay does it?) And because of this preference if I had a single critical thing to say about this album it would be that at times Sharon's voice does get a bit on the high side. Conversely though, I am sure there are many that will enjoy this facet of her voice, and over and above any sound preference one might have, her vocals are always appropriate to the music. Furthermore, and far more worthy of mention is the fact that Sharon has an absolutely gorgeous voice, which easily rates as one of the best female Rock/Metal voices ever, not to mention she's pretty damn easy on the eyes. (Did I mention that I'm not gay? - Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
Now, as is natural I suppose, I also feel compelled to compare this album to their previous album, 2001's 'Mother Earth', which some say it is better. However, I would like to make it known that I actually own both albums, and have for quite some time now. Consequently I have no reservations in telling you that in my opinion, with all things carefully considered, this album is without question a better offering. But by only a small margin though, as 'Mother Earth' is also a fantastic album, and a fantastical album I might add, that in comparison I would rate 4.5 stars. I won't get into the differences here, because the differences are substantial, and it would take a bit of explaining. Just trust me when I say buy this album first, and if you like it (and you will like it) then buy 'Mother Earth'. But just be prepared to hear something much more imaginary and grandiose. FYI, I also own WT's latest album, 2007's 'The Heart Of Everything', another exceptional album which I would also rate 4.5 stars. And believe me, I am not indiscriminately doling out praise or being liberal or charitable, these albums have earned their ratings. I think three rock solid albums in a row is an amazing accomplishment, and damn near unheard of, but believe or not WT has done it, as there is no filler to be found on any of these albums! And this amazing accomplishment certainly did not happen by accident, as Sharon said in an interview; "we do feel a lot of artistic pressure to write beautiful music" - "we are very critical of our music, a great deal of our ideas and songs are thrown away, and that's why it always takes us so long to write a new album". This is true, WT has only been releasing a new album once every three years. Which granted is a long time between offerings, but this should only be seen as something admirable, and deserving of praise, as releasing an outstanding album every three years is without question a whole lot better than releasing a marginal album every year.
In conclusion, this album, 'The Silent Force' is one of those albums that I just can't recommend more highly. Buy it now! I honestly don't see how anything but delight could be found. (Did I mention that I'm not gay?) :-)
A Deal at Twice the Price.......2007-04-13
This CD was worth every penny: soulful, operatic, and yet still grounded in fire-and-fury, balls-out rock. "Stand My Ground" is a beautiful testimony to strenth and individuality, "Aquarius" gains points for the mythology reference, and "Angels" simply stunning. If you need a reason to by the CD, listen to "Angels."
Exellent! Within Temptation's best album........2006-11-16
If you liked Evanescence's album "Fallen", then you will probably like this album. Good rock beats combined with soaring, operatic vocals to make a musical experience that I never get tired of listening to.
My first WT cd.......2006-07-07
Being a huge fan of gothic metal bands such as Elis, Midnattsol, Leaves' Eyes and of course Nightwish, I have always wanted to check out Within Temptation but their cds aren't available in the states at regular prices. Thankfully I received a copy of the band's most recent album "Silent Force" from a friend. I immediately took to the music right away. It definitely goes without saying that Sharon Den Adel has a gorgeous voice. I personally thought her delicate vocals were eerily reminiscent of both Sarah Brightman as well as Liv Kristine of Leaves' Eyes/formerly of Theatre of Tragedy. The music in general is an epic proportion of metal laced with sumptuous goth melodies which often veered off into opera territory at times. I loved all the songs on the cd. All of the songs had a nice balance between the heavy metal guitar riffs and delicate goth melodies.
boring.......2005-08-26
After their great success with "Mother Earth," it seems that Within Temptation is struggling to find a niche in the music world. I loved "Mother Earth" and its fusion of musical genres. I eagerly anticipated the group's next CD. I was disappointed in this newest release. There are no songs that leave any lasting impression to speak of, and the songs tend to sound boring and repetitive after the first 3 cuts. For those of you who loved "Mother Earth," don't bother buying "Silent Force."

I like the music but am not happy that only the mpg plays on the computer and I can't get to any of the songs with my winamp... If I had known that I would not have bought the CD...
Top band of their time........2007-06-22
Within Temptation is one of the best bands that I have heard in years. With Sharon den Adel's hypnotic voice, you are pulled into the song. The enchanting symphony ignites the hauntingly beautiful vocals.
"Memories," plays across the soul and burns you with the desire to remember and embrace life.
Simply amazing.
Beautiful and empty........2007-06-20
So, here's the thing: After the release of Enter and Mother Earth, Within Temptation decided to release a more commercially geared album that's completely different from their two previous releases. Now, it's not a bad thing when a band decides to recognize a more mainstream crowd; it's only a bad thing when they go about it in the wrong way- sort of like Within Temptation inevitably did.
Now, this LP has some magnificently composed songs that feature the wonderfully angelic and professionally dynamic vocals of Sharon Den Adel...and granted, most people such as myself can pop it into the CD player and listen to the whole thing through, completely hypnotized by its beautiful sound.
Unfortunately though, if you peel back the layers, there isn't much else to be found. Within Temptation has seemed to sacrifice the personality of their songs, that can be heard in their previous releases, for an almost too perfect and beautiful sound and cliché lyrics.
Honestly, the fact that Within Temptation has taken most of the heart out of their songs doesn't bother me too much, considering there is still a beautiful sounding album on hand...but I definitely wouldn't suggest this album to you if you are looking for something filled with deep meaning and lyrics that a writer has put their heart, sweat, and soul into.
powerful and enchanting.......2007-03-17
Silent Force, by Within Temptation, is a very strong CD. It displays a delightful mix of rock and symphony. The vocals are very strong and beautiful.
Where has this band been all my life?.......2007-03-14
My roommate discovered this band for us by watching fan videos online. We instantly fell in love with Angels and that one song was the basis for me purchasing this whole CD for her for Christmas. We listened through it together for the first time and we are hooked. The beautiful lilting voice of the main singer is haunting and the instrumentation is quite amazing. I was utterly impressed and have recommended this to most of my friends, several of whom are as addicted as I am to Within Temptation.

Out of print in the U.S.! Import pressing of this 1994 live album from one of the 4AD label's most popular and influential bands. At the core of Dead Can Dance is guitarist Brendan Perry and vocalist Lisa Gerard, who created a body of work that remains invigorating and uniquely their own. 15 tracks. 4AD.
Customer Reviews:
A great live album, and a great place to start.......2007-04-15
One thing to bear in mind when choosing Dead Can Dance albums is that the duo of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry went through at least four distinct stylistic phases, so you may find that certain albums appeal much more than others. This live album is a wonderful starting point, because it straddles a broad range of their musical styles and abilities. Also, while most artists' live albums simply rehash their existing popular work, of the 15 tracks on this album, only four (Yulunga, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Cantara, and Song of the Sybil), have appeared on previous DCD releases, making this an individual album in its own right. (Studio versions of two of Lisa's tracks, Persian Love Song and Sanvean, later appeared on her solo Mirror Pool release.) Both performers have never sounded better vocally, and are backed by a band of multi-instrumentalists with impeccable musicianship.
The album opens with one of DCD's all time best tracks, Rakim, long a staple of their live shows but making its first official recorded appearance here. Brendan and Lisa work as an integrated team here, melding her shimmering yang ch'in (Chinese hammer dulcimer) and lilting vocals with his rich Sinatra-like baritone over a driving percussion beat. Percussion is also used to great effect on a later track, Oman, which has a somewhat African and middle eastern flavor. Lisa shines on her vocal showpieces of Persian Love Song, Yulunga, Cantara and Sanvean, demonstrating her amazing multi-octave vocal range. Haunting flutes feature prominently on Desert Song, Piece for Solo Flute, and I Am Stretched On Your Grave; the last is a masterpiece of gloomy goth stylings resonantly delivered by Brendan over an ominous drone. Tristan and Song of the Sybil feature the group in its traditional medieval mode.
The most surprising tracks on the album, which have no stylistic counterparts in DCD's studio work, are three original songs by Brendan: I Can See Now, American Dreaming, and Don't Fade Away. These find Brendan in a singer/songwriter mode, primarily accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, conjuring up comparisons to Tim Buckley and some of Bruce Springsteen's more introspective work. The last two tracks mentioned are among the best songs on the album, but if there is any criticism of them it is that they really don't fit stylistically with the rest of the album or the group's overall oeuvre. In fact, these songs foreshadowed the musical directions Brendan would pursue in his later solo album, Eye of the Hunter.
Listeners finding that they like the medieval styled tracks on the album should check out Aion. Those drawn to Cantara, I Am Stretched On Your Grave, Persian Love Song, and Sanvean should check out Within The Realm of a Dying Sun, Spleen and Ideal, and The Serpent's Egg, along with Lisa's solo album Mirror Pool. Those drawn to Yulunga and the more middle eastern tracks may want to check out Into The Labyrinth, which also features some more straightforward pop songs by Brendan, as of course does his solo album Eye of the Hunter.
Music To Live To.......2007-02-01
I was without the internet/cable for several days and I don't own a radio, so I popped this cd in to listen to. I expected that I would tire of it after two or so repetitions, but I didn't. There's such a wonderful variety of styles of music on the cd that it never feels redundant. From start to finish you travel a wonderful journey that never gets old. Not even when you're playing it on constant repeat for 24 hours straight.
Well integrated influences from a vast range of musical sources.......2006-10-15
Sometimes they sound like cloistered monks, at other times like Druid nature worshipers, and at others like North African nomadic tribes. Their range is amazing as you hear the sounds of Palestine, Ireland, and Libya combined with a very contemporary existential presentation of dark brooding, mournful loss.
Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard seem like contemporary priests of the earth goddess mourning the end of the harvest and the coming winter. At other times Brendan Perry's dark masculine smooth baritone seems to be romantic and passionate, as if we mourning the loss of a lover.
The instrumentation is excellent with a broad range of world instruments. In this CD, which was made from a live performance in Santa Monica California, the power of a live presentation with its required spontanaeity heightens the work.
There were many strong selections on this CD, but some of the best are: Rakim, Piece for solo flute, The wind that shakes the barley, American dreaming, Oman, and Don't fade away. Some of these works are on other CDs but the live performances have an immediacy that is very nice.
Enchanting Vocals w/ a fusion of world music.......2006-04-20
About the Band:
Dead Can Dance is considered the seminal example of the ethereal (in the US) or heavenly voices (in Europe) genre. In fact, the name of the label, 4AD, which carried many of the 1990s DCD releases, is sometimes also used to describe this genre of music, which is a fusion of subtle electronics, vocals, drums, world music, and a near limitless count of instruments. Brendan Perry sometimes has been described as a gothic Frank Sinatra. Lisa Gerrard's enchanting vocals are often sung in a language only known to Lisa. I count myself among the many that hold these two musicians in the highest esteem.
About the Album:
Toward the Within is a live album from 1994, and though many music fans will often prefer the quality associated with a studio recorded album, I personally feel that heavenly voices music is designed to be emotional and moving ... and this album has a sincerity that will touch any listener. Toward the Within is one of my favorite albums. Fans of Brendan Perry's vocals will likely be more pleased by this album, as he provides the lead on the majority of the tracks.
Recommended Tracks:
- I Can See Now
- Don't Fade Away
- Rakim
- American Dreaming
- Desert Song
- The Wind that Shakes the Barley (I like this live version better)
- Cantara
In contrast to two very popular DCD offerings that are also worth checking out, Aion (which is very medieval sounding) and Into the Labyrinth (which is a bit remorseful and dark), I found this entire album extremely uplifting and inspirational. I can't stress enough how much I wish I could sing like Perry, and the truth is that I find myself doing so with this album. Fans of folk and romantic music will absolutely love this album.
