5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-14

This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.

3 out of 5 stars A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19

It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05

However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!

5 out of 5 stars every good adjective .......2005-08-06

This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2005-05-29

The perfect recording to help you recover from a long, hard day. Showcasing the MTC's "new" sound in contemporary choral arrangements with its own orchestra and conductor, "Peace Like a River" brought tears to my eyes in selection after selection during my first listen -- and I'm not normally an emotional person! The title song together with "Deep River," "Swing Low" and "Be Still My Soul" are alone worth the cost of the recording. Get this one!

5 out of 5 stars A Listening Treat .......2007-03-08

What a delight to listen to this collection of pure Rutter ! The melodic sounds of the Cambridge Singers bring me such pleasure The sheer joyfulness of this music is to me a religious experience of such depth It is superb and will lift ones spirits instantly. highly recommended to all lovers of the English contemporary choral sound and scene,____ not to be missed

5 out of 5 stars Be Thoy My Vision CD.......2007-02-19

My husband sang many of these John Rutter compositions with his church choir, and this CD is perfect since the choir is directed by Rutter, singing his own music. If you love religious music, this will bring tears to your eyes, the choir is "that" perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Really good, but don't listen to it all at once........2007-01-07

I really liked this CD. It really showcases Rutter's knack for religious choral music. Perhaps it helps that I have sung some of his stuff with various groups. However, as with any similar compiliation, the composer's sameness of style and motif becomes apparent. This repetition can become boring on the third or fourth listening. On the other hand, this makes a great reference tool for any choral director or performer. Buy it, however, it's worth it, but don't listen to it all at once.

5 out of 5 stars A must for choral music fans.......2006-09-19

Simply fabulous, 10/10. These are all Rutter-composed pieces, directed by Rutter himself. If you have any interest in religious choral music at all, you must get this album! One of the highlights of my musical life was attending a concert of a University of Maryland choir in which my mom sang, that featured Rutter as a guest conductor. Listening to this album is almost as good! ;-) There are too many good pieces to start naming all of my favorites, but these are some of the best known ones: "Open Thou Mine Eyes", "A Gaelic Blessing", "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "As the Bridegroom to His Chosen", "For the Beauty of the Earth", and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You".

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22

I sought a recording of Rutter's beautiful hymn, "Wings of the Morning", after we sang this lovely tune in church and this was the only CD I could find that contained it.

This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.

Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.

While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.

The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.

If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

THIS IS MUSIC YOU CAN LISTEN TO EVERY DAY AND ENJOY OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

3 out of 5 stars White bread, well-baked in spots.......2005-08-12

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir that performs on this disc is a tightly-knit, well-conducted unit, and some of the tracks on the disc border on the ethereal. "Lead, Kindly Light," "Sweet Hour of Prayer" (in parts) and "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," for example, touch the soul and bring tears to the eyes.

However, on other arrangements the choir sounds like a group of white folks far removed from the remainder of humanity. For example, the opening track, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," and also "All Creatures of Our God and King" sound rote and perfunctory, like a group of elementary school students (with very fine voices, to be sure) going through the paces of a daily sing: elevator music on a grand scale. At the opposite extreme, sudden dynamic shifts in other tracks sound pretentious. The final bars of "All Creatures of Our God and King" suggest an attempt at a grand finale, but lack even a hint of majesty or passion. The choir lacks any apparent understanding of the Shaker spirit in "Simple Gifts" --- rather like Lawrence Welk playing Bob Marley. (Not that I've ever seen a Shaker in dreadlocks.) "Battle Hymn of the Republic" begins majestically, but turns into a caricature, and then reverts to a semblance of glory (except for a brief flirtation with a minor key).

The high praise lavished on this disc by other reviewers is no surprise: It is of very high quality for what it is. The choir offers a lovely sound. However, more than half the tracks are seriously flawed, and the musicianship is sufficiently peculiar on the whole as to lower the rating considerably.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......2002-08-24

If you want to hear the best of the best, this CD is it. These hymn arrangements are just beautiful and very touching. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the choir and wants to feel a little closer to heaven. The choir seems to sing literally with one voice and you feel like they are singing just for you. Congratulations to the new conductor, Craig Jessop and all those who contributed to the quality that went into producing this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for the Sabbath.......2002-04-17

I LOVE IT!!! What better way to enjoy the Sabbath than to sing of the Lord's Praises with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? This album is just the ticket! It's very powerful, and uplifting.

What? You mean I can only give this album five stars? But that doesn't even BEGIN to do it justice!

I love it. Truly a masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Sabbath.......2002-02-05

If you only own one Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD, this is the one. It has creative arrangements of many favorite hymns, as well as the best recording of the Wilhousky Battle Hymn arrgmt that I have ever come across. The only downer: it has (another) recording of Simple Gifts, which has been beat to death by choirs in the last decade.

I especially love the 'Glory' pieces on it: Full of timpani, brass, and alleluias- one of those discs you turn all the way up and direct the stereo when noone is looking. I hope my neighbors like it too; they probably hear it quite a bit.

Few recording producers and performers take the time and care to so intelligently exhibit a sampling of the rich and colorful American hymn repertoire. This thoughtful and varied program of hymns, Shaker songs, anthems, and spirituals shows what good things can happen when a top-rank choir and director and an accommodating record company join in such a project. The 20 selections come from a variety of sources, including The Southern Harmony (published in 1834) and The Sacred Harp (published in 1844). The Shaker tunes are from the vast collections at New Lebanon and Pleasant Hill, New York, and Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Four of the six spirituals and several of the hymns are arrangements by Alice Parker; others are arranged by James Mulholland. Among the hymns and spirituals are two American choral classics: Randall Thompson's famous and oft-performed "Alleluia" and Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven." --David Vernier

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best choir out there.......2004-03-02

The Kansas City Chorale is a SUPERIOR vocal group. I am impressed by its large and wholesome sound that is produced by such a small group. The Alleluia CD is beautiful and also very diverse. "Sing me to Heaven" is gorgeous. The harmonies are beautiful on the page, but are even more beautiful when sung by this ensemble. "Alleluia" is also wonderful, and I was impressed by their interpretation of the many shaker songs and spirituals. This cd is a MUST HAVE for any choral singer or enthusiast.

    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2003-03-24

My choir sang "Alleluia", and used this recording to learn the dynamics. A brilliant performance of that piece. The others are, too, excellent. Good balance, dynamic, and overall sound. But the "Alleluia" really stood out for me.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD.......2002-01-23

My pastor bought me this CD and I wasn't sure I'd really like it. Chorale music? You must be joking. But I popped it into my CD player at home and was immediately astonished at what I heard. The Kansas City Chorale have done an outstanding job of singing hymns of various types, most without musical accompaniment. Track 7 ("Encouragement") is my absolute favorite song on this CD. It is so beautiful to hear, especially when I crank it on my big stereo or over my headphones.

Bottom line: if you like chorale music, religious music, or even classical music, you will really enjoy this CD. The quality of the recording is very good.

5 out of 5 stars A moving survey of American hymns.......2002-01-02

This is an excellent, deeply musical performance of a wide variety of hymns, Shaker tunes, and spirituals. The choices provide variety and a thumbnail sketch of a time in America when hymn-singing was a part of every week's activities. I agree with another reviewer that "Precious Lord" is a highlight. Also noteworthy is "Give Me Jesus" at the end. Both the singing and acoustics of the recording are top notch. I have already played this CD many times since receiving it two days ago. I'm ordering copies for friends! Among my many choral CDs, this one stands out as a favorite.

What a excellent CD! I got this for Christmas after going to a couple of their concerts and it sounds just as good as it did live. If you like chorale music then this is the cd for you. I personally know a man that sings in this group and is very talented singer along with the rest!

4 out of 5 stars Good recording of the "chamber" version of the Requiem.......2001-09-10

Most recordings to date of the Rutter "Requiem" have used the version for full orchestra. Rutter also prepared an arrangement for organ, augmented by flute, oboe, clarinet, cello, harp, timpani, and percussion. This recording, to the best of my knowledge, is the only commercial recording of the latter version. In an interesting twist, though, while most recordings feature a choir of 50 or less, the choir here numbers about 200.

Given the "reduced" forces, Seelig et al. acquit themselves admirably. All five of the anthems are well performed, especially the setting of Psalm 27, "The Lord is My Light and My Salvation." [Personally, I wish they had substituted another piece for "All Things Bright and Beautiful"; it is too saccharine to withstand repeated listenings.]

The "Requiem" in particular stands out; the singing is clear throughout, and, in some cases, the organ-predominant version of the "Requiem" provides more thrills than the orchestral version (especially in the opening movement (Requiem aeternam). Also, Seelig takes the "Sanctus" at a faster pace than most other recordings: where Rutter himself takes 2'10", Seelig flies through at about 1'45", and it nevertheless feels like the more appropriate tempo.

John Rutter's works, by and large, are more direct than other 20th century English composers; his works do not appeal to everyone. Given the uniqueness of this recording, it is certainly well-worth hearing (although, to be fair to Rutter, the recent mid-price re-release of his Requiem coupled with his Magnificat is certainly a better bargain).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choral Recording.......2001-06-12

This is a wonderful quality recording of great Rutter. Top notch. Just listen to it! You wont be disappointed with this CD.

2 out of 5 stars great engineering, lousy music making.......2000-09-23

I bought this recording primarily for reference's engineering and the magnificent Fisk instrument with its massive 32' pipes. On that score, this recording delivers--not much bombast, but lots of subwoofer test material. I wish the music had lived up to this standard. Personally I happen to think John Rutter something of a hack, a notion from which the trite, platitudinous opening tracks did little to dissuade me. Of course, that's just my opinion; if you like Rutter then it won't be a concern to you. The Requiem is better music, but there I found the vocal performance distracting. The singers--especially the women--exhibited faults typical of amateur American choirs: wide (and uncontrolled) vibrato, imprecise entrances, and Latin that sounded--well, like Texans singing Latin. In addition, their overall affect was one of soporific aloofness. This produced a smooth, agreeable gentleness in quiet sections (actually, reminiscent of Shaw and Atlanta in the best spots), but came at the expense of tension, fire, and fervor throughout.

5 out of 5 stars An inspired blend of performance and recording prowess.......1999-10-28

This CD succeeds at the tricky combination of Glorious program material, inspired performance, and a flawless capture by the recording engineer.

Next time you're in New York, treat yourself to an Evensong service at St. Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue. The next best thing is this recording, which gives you a satisfying taste of the church's atmosphere and choral excellence. It's got everything, from readings of lessons and choral psalm singing, to hymns with descants, organ solos, and anthems by Ned Rorem, Gerre Hancock, and Frederick Candlyn. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous music, marvelous music, mediocre recording............2004-03-10

Who said America doesn't have a fantastic boy-choir tradition?

He should be slapped in the face....

First of all, I've always admired Gerre Hancock for his bold music selections. He may be dismissed as a "modernist" by the more conservative choral conducters, but one who has an ear for good music will know what makes an outstanding musical performance. I'm very happy Hancock has decided again to perform something of Ned Rorem, wich suits the sound of the 5th Avenue choir very well. One would also want to mention Hancocks own musical compositions, like Judge Eternal, wich are marvelous work of art! His improvisation on the organ however is a little bit a of a disappointment (what you wouldn't expect of somebody who was a protegé of Jean Langlais for crying out loud). But he makes up for that in other CD's. The last piece on the CD, performed by Peter Stoltzfus (an outstanding young talent) is Rorem's Magnificat from organbook II, an organsolo wich absolutly MINDBLOWING!

I would have almost rated this CD 4-stars because of the mediocre (but not bad) recording, but one should hold in mind that the recording opperandi for such a broad space as St.Thomas can be very demanding. Still, an overall must for music, choral and organlovers alike!

      Product Description

Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

You're reading a review written by a person who has a natural ear for music. I'm someone who's heard all types of musicians and choirs from all over. There's always some choir with bangin' musicians but weak vocals. Then you have choirs with awesome, dynamic sound, but corny musicians. Very few choirs have an EXCELLENT balance of both musical and vocal talent. One of them would be "James Hall & Worship & Praise." And this group S.H.O.P. with L. Andre Patterson is another. It's pretty hard to explain the vocal talent alone of this choir in 1,000 words. All I can say is the true anointing of God is upon their voices. And the musicians are simply magnificent! I've never heard a percussionist who can morph into 5 different styles in one song!! Whoever he is...HE'S AWESOME. And then there's the last song on the CD called The Lord Strong & Mighty...the soloist literally sounds like an angel!! I highly recommend this CD to any tradtionalists of Gospel music as well as the contemporary listeners!!! (This choir WILL WOW YOU)
