    All Years Leaving is an acoustically-flavoured debut album from the Stands that shimmers with harmonies, harmonicas and jingle-jangle guitars and is indebted to all things Dylan, Byrds and Beatles. It's small wonder Noel Gallagher is a fan, although his poor record as a tipster shouldn't deter interest. Pleasant if not entirely ground-breaking, "All Years Leaving" at times casts singer/songwriter Howie Payne's combo as either a British version of My Morning Jacket or as brethren of one of the very good Liverpool postcode bands ("Outside the Door" could be the Coral on one of their skiffle rolls, "Here She Comes Again" could be the La's, "I Need You" could be "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" by Dylan--if he was from Merseyside). When the ectoplasmic spectre of Lennon finally emerges through a psychedelic mist on the waltztime "The Big Parade" and the more electrically scabrous "The Way She Does", heads spin and hearts flutter. Perhaps these two tracks offer the Stands their best way forward. --Kevin Maidment

    Though the impulse is understandable because of the Stands obvious mastery of homage, it would be a serious crime to mistake Howie Payne's genius for contextualization for mere retro reference. Howie Payne is one of the most brilliant lyricists of his generation, and the Stands second album rings with hard-driven, psychedelic sincerity.

    If they had gotten it this right the first time around, there would be no need for the Stands. Fortunately, there is Howie Payne.

    Its so hard to rewrite great songs by the amazing artist that the 60s gave us and have them sound as something new. The great thing about this album is that it is able to take the deepness of Dylan, mix it with the tripy sound of the byrds and add a touch of the typical liverpool sound from the beatles to the las. If you are a fan of any of dylan, the beatles, the las and the byrds youll love this. "When This River Rolls Over You" is a lovly dylanish song, with the harmonica and the voice style. Here She Comes Again is a nice 60's sounding tune, much like the las hit there she goes. Over all this a great sounding album that anyone who digs the 60s sound will like.

    In my opinion, the composer series recordings by Kostelanetz are among his best. The arrangements are for full orchestra and some of the best examples of Kostelanetz' passion and insight into the golden age of musical theatre. Six of the Cole Porter selections I had on '78s when they were first recorded, and the arrangements are the essence of Cole Porter. Kostelanetz indeed, plays the words, that is, during recording sessions,the orchestra members had the lyrics as well as the music on their music stands. My favorite is Porter's "I Love You". The Kostelanetz strings have a way of reaching my heart strings - it seems to express in music the way I feel about my wife of 42 years - you guessed it - I'm in my late 60's. I have this CD on back order, and have not really listened to it - but I have enjoyed these recordings for many years. However, to evaluate the quality of sound on these CDs I purchased the CD in the same series "Music of Irving Berlin" . The sound is outstanding, and true to the Kostelanetz original recordings. The Vincent Youmans recordings are a bit newer and first appeared on mono-LP. Again, they are excellent Kostelanetz arrangements and outstanding performances. What a treasure to find both of these wonderful LP recordings on one CD. I expect to have my copy of this CD from Amazon within the next week or so, and I will update this review after listening.

      Imagine you're on your way to Coachella but somehow end up at the Monterey Pop Festival. You're just about to start asking people how this happened when you realize that you'd only look like you had more than your share of the sunshine acid. The sound coming from the nearest stage is the only thing halfway familiar to you. It is a bit like what Oasis might sound like had they taken this journey back in time with you. It isn't 1967 and you're not on acid. You're listening to the debut album from The Stands. The Dylan-esque vocals and harmonica mix well with the more contemporary pop sound that accounts for the rest of the band, although the later half of that equation is overwhelming on some of the tracks.

      The Stands would be a band that might seem very comfortable hanging out with in Los Angeles with members of Brian Jonestown Massacre or The Tyde. They seem hell-bent on creating the sounds reminiscent of The Byrds and Gram Parsons. But this band is apparently from Liverpool. So it's maybe another Thrills type band that we have seeing lately. I read an interview with Brian Wilson where Conor Deasy of The Thrills interviewed him. The Stands seems open to influences. Fred Neil and Charley Patton influence the leader, Howie Payne. Those are names that I have been hearing lately. British musicians are always looking for unknown and forgotten American musicians to emulate. It is a rocket science. It's mainly people who have passed on. Sometimes these Brits know the music better than we do. The Stands are part of the scene dominated by The Coral and The Zutons that I have called "Pirate Rock." I saw them play last year and they were decent even though I didn't know the tunes. The music is decent and this is one of the best British records in a while. To reinvent is sometimes a goal.

      This is the most comprehensive recording I've found of songs popular during the Civil War period. The performances are a time capsule of Civil War music.

      Have you heard this CD? Each song stands alone on it's own merit.

      After probably wearing the CD thin, I still have not been able to narrow down a favorite. But, if you are looking for romantic mood music, then you can't go wrong with "Let Me Say I Love You". "Backroads" let the miles pass with a little more ease. "Autobiography to Jack" sounds like that old classic that you just can't put your finger on. If Jimmy Buffet hasn't heard "Things Jimmy Never Sang About", he needs to. "The Eagle..." is definitely a testament to American Pride.
