Look closely or you'll miss him (and this little gem).......2007-06-08
After a long absence Tim Finn is back in his new album, which are few and far between. Imaginary Kingdom is solo musical brilliance brimming with balance between thoughtfulness, hopefulness, and Finn's own imaginations. Its a shame that this album doesn't seem to get much of the recognition it deserves. Seldom found in any music stores and rarely reviewed. But then again Tim Finn always does seem to linger in the background off stage somewhere, where it would seem he is most comfortable. I was lucky enough to encounter this album after hearing his song "Winter Light" located in the end credits of "The Chronicles of Narnia" last year. Some of you may be familiar with it if you purchased the soundtrack. I liked what I heard and so checked out his music here on Amazon (what a handy little place) and soon became familiar with most of his work. This by far seems to be his best. It comes across as being well planned and conceived in that dilligent sort of fashion that only a compulsive solo artist can posses. You remember that air of beginnings and icy new adventure that "The Chronicles of Narnia" left you with? Well this is more of the same thing. It reminds me of that 'light that lingers in a quiet room' that Finn sings about in "Winter Light".
The first song sets a note of determinedness with "Couldn't Be Done" followed by melodical "Still the Song" alas, too short, like many of George Harrison's own works. "Astounding Moon" is thought provoking as it looks up at the nighttime sky in wonder. These first three tracks really play as the heart and soul of this album until you get down to what the second half has to offer. "Salt to the Sea" is a melancholic kind of story where Tim Finn stops off to contemplate life, and a journey, until you get to hopeful "Horizon". Other keys to this CD are "Resting Your Hand Lightly", "Show Yourself" and of course "Winter Light", all of which carry musical harmony.
So there it is, just another overlooked album from 2006 that at least deserves a listen. And if you like it enough check out Finn's other CDs[...]. Tim Finn might not be a very prolific singer, but he is definitely not short of any brilliance as you will soon find out.
Enjoy.

No Doubt's 1995 release, Tragic Kingdom, brought Southern California's ska scene to a national stage while elevating the band to star status. An irresistible mix of reggae, punk, and power pop, Tragic Kingdom scored several hits, among them "Spiderwebs," "Just a Girl," and "Don't Speak." Singer Gwen Stefani's looks made the group MTV shoo-ins, but her soaring voice is the real star, as evidenced by such songs as "Happy Now?"--a classic you'll-regret-you-dumped-me anthem that recalls Blondie--and the bouncy "Sunday Morning." Despite recurring themes of pain and regret, Tragic Kingdom manages to somehow feel sunny throughout. --Courtney Kemp
Customer Reviews:
Breakout, no doubt!.......2007-01-18
No Doubt deservedly hit it big when they released Tragic Kingdom. Their upbeat ska, punk, and rock influenced music stood out among the post-grunge crowd. There are several radio hits here, and the album has a lot more to offer. It's definitely a CD that is worth a spin if you like what you've heard of them before. A classic 90s album!
One excellent Ska album.......2006-11-09
No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom is really a great album and worth your money. Literally every track on it is well done. In my opinion its the last good No Doubt album. My personal favorite song is The Climb, mainly because its written in 12/8 as opposed to 4/4 time, like most popular music. Unfortunately, every other song on the album is 4/4, but it is something of a treat to hear something different. This album is really good all around and everyone can like at least one track on this album.
Welcome to the Tragic Kingdom!.......2006-07-26
This is the best album No Doubt has ever made. I still remember in 1996 when don't speak was No.1 for long weeks. I thunk this song is the best No doubt has ever made. A performance deserving a standing ovation. The rate lies down:
1. Spiderwebs. A great intro. This song is what defines No Doubt style to my opinion. I love this one. 10/10
2. Excuse me mr. I don't like this song that much. I think ''Sixteen'' should have been released as a single instead of this one. The lyrics, don't make much sense, but the piano sounds good. 6/10
3. Just a Girl. A very nice song about teenager girls. The guitar sounds great. 10/10
4. Happy Now? This song sounds good. I like it.9/10
5. Different People. Nice intro. The rest, isn't that bad. 8/10
6. Hey You. The first time I saw this song title, before I listened to it, I thought It was a remake of Pink Floyd's. This song is the strongest one. It's just rock. Doesn't have any reggae, pop or ska rythm. One of my favourites. 10/10
7. The Climb. It didn't have to take much time. This song is the boring slow one. Is actualy quiet good, but is the longest one, and it wasn't necessary at all. Up to 6 minutes!! 8/10
8. Sixteen. One of my favourites. One of the best rock songs No Doubt has ever made. It had been released as a single and I bet it would have reached the number one for weeks! Starts great, is the song that makes you stand up and jump. I was 16, and I felt like this song was to me. I felt identified with it.''You're only sixteen and you're feeling old...'' And it ends when Sunday Morning starts, with the drums. 10/10
9. Sunday Morning. I love how the song sounds, it's geat! but the lyrics doesn't help that much. But I don't care, I like it! One of my favourites. 10/10
10. Don't Speak. I have no words to describe this song. The lyrics, the sound, everything on this song is great! I think this is the best No Doubt song on their 5 studio albums!
A strong ballad. ''As we die, both you and I, with my head in my hands I sit and cry...''.10/10
11. You can do it. Doesn't sound that good. This song shouldn't have been included on this album. Is just the worst. I don't like it. 3/10
12. A very nice song. ''We gotta fing another way to make the world go 'round.'' The lyrics are great. Is just about rality. I love this song. 10/10
13. End it on this. A good one. Not that bad. 9/10
14. Tragic Kingdom. This song is like the cherry on the cake. I like the intro when it says "Permanecer sentados por favor" in Spanish. Welcome to the Tragic Kingdom! 10/10
Be sure you pick a copy of this album up. This album is No Doubt's best ever.
Fun!.......2006-07-19
You can't go wrong with this CD. It's just fun! Gwen's voice, the lyrics, the music is all good stuff!
Great New Wave/Ska Revival.......2006-07-10
I listened to this for the first time in a long time recently and was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounds.
This is the ultimate No Doubt album - terrific sound of ska/new wave/pop. Listening to this album again during our present penchant for 80's revival made me realize that "Tragic Kingdom" was about 10 years ahead of it's time.
"Spiderwebs", "Excuse Me Mr", "Just A Girl", "Sunday Morning" and "Don't Speak" are all great singles.
Hopefully this band will truly return to their great roots and return to this fine form in the near future...I think it's the perfect time!

Few retirements are as short-lived as that of New York rap mogul Jay-Z. Barely two years after bowing out in 2004, he's back with Kingdom Come--and if he's set down the mic for a minute, it doesn't show. Backed by a dream team of producers (Just Blaze, Kanye West, Dr Dre, the Neptunes), with special guests including Pharrell, Beyonce, and Coldplay's Chris Martin, it's an A-list cast. Naturally, though, it's the Hova who's the star attraction, slightly older and prone to pontificating on his ten years in the game (see "30-Something"), but certainly no wiser: as he raps on "Trouble," he's still got "hands in the cookie jar." The first few tracks are pure consolidation, gleaming and boastful productions that remind you just how great Jay-Z is on the mic. Further in, though, Kingdom Come branches out in style: "Hollywood," the duet with Beyoncé, is a jaded take on celebrity culture, while "Minority Report" relives the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina with the Bush Administration in the metaphorical sights. Finally, the Coldplay-produced "Beach Chair" concludes the album on a spiritual note, Jay-Z announcing "life is but a dream" as Chris Martin trills like an angel atop echoing drums and distorted, music-box guitar. If you thought it could never work, you were clearly underestimating.--Louis Pattison
Amazon.com
While nowhere near a career-ending disaster, the wobbly Kingdom Come wasn't the best justification Jay-Z could have made for ending his retirement. You'd think his enthusiasm for jumping back in the game would give the album more energy but despite a power trio of songs by Just Blaze that kick off the CD, much of the album feels listless and unfocused and it doesn't help that A-list producers like Dr. Dre and the Neptunes drop the ball with some truly tepid tracks. There are nice moments: the blistering title song, Jay's soul-baring "Lost Ones," and his snickering disses on "Dig a Hole." But, those moments are counterbalanced by the clunky "Beach Chair" (produced by Coldplay's Chris Martin), the obnoxious, corporate swagger of "30 Something," and the garish, unlistenable club cut "Anything." Any fan of Jay over the last 10 years knows he's better than this so now the new anticipation will be for his real comeback album. --Oliver Wang

Customer Reviews:
He Still Has It.......2007-07-09
When an artist is on top, they should expect a lot of critics. The reality is that Jay-Z is the best all around rapper. His content may not be the deepest, but lyrically he is out of here. He took over and ran rap after Biggy passed. The game needed him since he retired.
I love to see the fact that Hov has matured in his life and his music. Many people want to hear him rap the same way he did five years ago. Jay cannot do that because he is in a different space. Artists are suppose to mature and reflect that maturity in their music. The album's intro lets everyone know that the flow is still there. Songs like "30 Something" tell the listeners that Jay is on his grown man. He is not interested in that young boy stuff anymore. "Beach Chair" is a perfect song to close the album.
This is the most introspective Jay-Z album and it is sad that people do not want to hear him make statements. Life is not all about Fly talk. The only songs I think should have been left off the album were "Anything" and "Hollywood". I do think they fit the album. Other than that he is still the best. These other rappers need to stop hating and taking shots at him. Jay influenced their flows and showed them how to expand business outside of being an artist.
The game needed him and Nas. The rap game was boring and wack. Their new music was refreshing. "I used to think rapping at 38 was ill, but last year alone I grossed 38 mil. I know I ain't quiet 38 but still, the flow so special got a 38 feel. The real is back." That says it all.....
Yes, Kingdom of Incompetence comes ...with you !!! We know it !!!!.......2007-07-08
Dear Jay-Z,
It's a great mistery of this earth how people shoud buy your albums !!!
I don't have this album and I never will own it.
For this rating I used the examle tracks of tha [...] and it is enough to say that THIS IS A FLOP LIKE ALL YOUR ALBUMS.
I sincerely have to tell you that I appreciate you just and only when you are a guest in the albums of the other rappers . So be guest from here to your day of death.
Fortunately there are rappers like Redman, Camp Lo, Icarus, Mally G, Da Ranjahz, Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz, M.O.P., Onyx and GangStarr that maintain high the banner of the rap music !!!
JUST WITH YOU HIP HOP IS DEAD. This would be the title of your next album : " Just with me Hip Hop is dead !"
3-1/2 stars -- The Blueprint 3.......2007-06-30
Let's be real. How many rappers that go into retirement actually stay retired? It seems like rappers feel as though they have to announce such a stage in life because in THIS case, Jay-Z is approaching 40, which is considered elderly in rap years. And while Kingdom Come isn't quite as satisfying as The Black Album, it does have enough good moments.
One thing I have to mention, though, is that the first half of the album had to grow on me. Most of the songs are produced very well, but the thing is, they're produced in such a way that they would work best as instrumental tracks; one really shouldn't be trying to rap over them. And Jay is trying too hard to drop lyrics over such tracks, especially the two most overrated ones, "Oh My God" and "Show Me What You Got".
Thankfully, Jigga redeems himself elsewhere, like on the political "Minority Report", as well as "I Made It", "Dig a Hole" and the title track. But there are also a few more songs that seem a little too similar to his previous work. Although "Lost One" (with Chrisette Michele) is good, it feels like it should have been called "Song Cry Part II". But the obligatory Neptunes track "Anything" should have been left behind, not to mention that Jay already had a song called "Anything" (but to be fair, it was a bonus track off one of Beanie Sigel's albums). And "Trouble" starts off all right, but it gets weird toward the second verse, especially when he ends it with: "If my hand's in the cookie jar, know one thing/Ima take -- y'all know what I mean." We do?
There is also a necessary Beyoncé duet, "Hollywood", that goes absolutely nowhere. And I almost had to knock my rating down to three stars upon learning that the final three tracks are just songs from previous albums. Basically, Kingdom Come is "just another" Jay-Z album, which is why I compare it to The Blueprint. It's not the classic comeback that Jay told us it would be, but it's not terrible either, so just play it to pass the time.
Anthony Rupert
Taking A Risk Can Be Good.......2007-05-24
Compliments to Jay-Z for really digging deep and putting together an album like this.I've had problems with Jay-Z's sometimes bored sounding flow over the years but this time he put passion behind his words. "Show Em Watcha Got" is a classic from using Flavor's line and the famous horns that have covered many classics in Hip Hop to a whole band playing along is a welcome breath of fresh air. "Trouble" is another stand out just because its memorable keyboard riffs on a club beat but Jay's hook is the best because its subtle and not over the top. Hard to pull that off on one album. I could go on but do yourself a favor and buy a copy.
descent...........2007-05-07
yeah it's not too bad... but if i wanted to hear a "gangster" get all mature, i would've purchased ice cube or ice tea... i love neptunes hits as much as the next guy, but i can't stand their stuff on here, let alone that HORRIBLE kanye west beat... i used to be a Jay Z hater, but blueprint and black album turned me... i love him now for what he does, but it's been how many months since this album was released? 6 or so? and i still don't feel 2/3rds of the album... i'm glad he's sold so much, but i'm also glad I downloaded it...
jay's newly "matured" attitude, I don't mind,... i don't know why people criticise it, but when he combined it with uninspired lyrics and average beats, this is not the jay z album i've come to expect after black album...
peace,

Filmmaker Ridley Scott has long been intrigued by historical events and their contemporary echoes, a fascination that evinces itself again here in the violent tale of Balian of Ibelin (Orlando Bloom), a Jerusalem blacksmith who rallies his people against foreign invaders during the Crusades of the 12th century. Breaking with a successful modern collaboration with Hans Zimmer that yielded such eclectic riches as Gladiator, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, and Matchstick Men, Scott turned here to fellow Englishman/former Zimmer associate Harry Gregson-Williams for his new film's music. The composer, perhaps weary of the electronica-suffused action film cliches he's so often been associated with, rises admirably to the occasion with a sweeping orchestral score that masterfully trades on a wealth of disparate historical and stylistic influences. Gregson-Williams echoes the film's religious and cultural conflicts via the tense musical axis at the soundtrack's core, one that sets the invading Church's medieval choral ecclesiastics on a collision course with the ancient Arabic modalities of the film's hero. The resulting score may occasionally trade on hoary Hollywood romantic traditions, but the composer infuses them with such bracing doses of historical/ethnic antecedentsand his own decidedly contemporary instinctsas to create a compelling new whole. Even the obligatory, pop-oriented version of Ibellin's Theme ("Light of Life") by Natacha Atlas shimmers with Middle Eastern-inflected enticement. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Haunting.......2007-06-12
Plain and simple this is a haunting score from start to finish. Something about that choir church voice that haunts the mind and soul. That's not a bad thing, that's a very good thing! What's great about the score is that it's easily recognizable to scenes from the movie. Now there was one that was left out and I do believe it's the funeral scene for King Baldwin which was great. That song would've made this album complete for me. Regardless of that minor mistake by the producers of the album, it is still a great listen for those who are enchanted by great epics and great monumental scores that accompany them. There's perfect balance in this score that really sets the mood and you do not get bored. Just don't cross into that realm of half-sleep and half awakeness while listening. You will eventually get startled.
better than the film.......2007-05-24
the music was the best thing about the film. But when you listen to it i can't recall anything from the film at all. Oh well.
Amazing Music from Harry-Gregson Williams.......2007-03-12
There is too much to say concerning this score, so I will keep my review rather curt. This is one of the best action/epic film scores ever written. Williams wrote the music for the Chronicles of Narnia in the same year as Kingdom of Heaven, and although the Narnia score was excellent, it cannot compare to the wonderfully artful music delivered in Kingdom of Heaven. I own over 200 film soundtracks and this is one that spins in my CD changer most often.
Awesome music!.......2007-01-06
My 13 year old daughter took this from me, and now has loaded it in her ipod. she loves it, and I hear it coming from her earphones all the time. (That makes me happy considering some of the junk out there) I personally love it too! The music brings back the memories of the wonderful movie, but it is beautiful to listen to regardless. I definitely recommend for anyone who enjoys beautiful music.
"Borrows" from the late Jerry Goldsmith's "The 13th Warrior".......2006-12-27
I am an avid collector of film scores (Over 160 thus far) and many are VERY rare/valuable. I personally do not own this Gregson-Williams score (I've seen the movie) but it works quite well in the film. There is only one thing I want readers to know: Just as the final, climactic battle sequence is beginning, Orlando Bloom is giving a speech to his brothers in arms....listen to the music at that moment. If you're an avid collector such as I am, you'll notice that the music playing is actually the piece entitled "Valhalla/Viking Victory" from Jerry Goldsmith's "The 13th Warrior". I don't know how Gregson-Williams got permission to use excerpts from that piece in this film, considering Goldsmith passed away in 2004 (Before Kingdom of Heaven was released). Anyway, not EVERYTHING heard in the film is original Gregson-Williams music. I do not know if the piece is also heard on the CD.

if you loved the game and all it's awesomeness, you have to get the soundtrack.
but if you are just getting it for the hikaru utada songs... don't bother because the songs are in japanese.
if you can look past that and appreciate the music, then you won't be disappointed.

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar
®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03
It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.
Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30
Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!
Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05
I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.
Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!
If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)
Wonderful, wonderful stuff!
What a find!!.......2003-06-15
I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)
Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.
The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.
One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).
The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".
If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!
A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23
Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

They've Still Got It!.......2007-06-07
The Moody Blues have been very successful and much loved for over 40 years and with good reason- they're exceptional at what they do. These talented men were born to sing, play and write great music. This album is proof that as of 1991 they still had "it" in spades. Of the 11 tracks on this offering, there is only one that was a "skipper-over" for me. I will briefly comment on the songs that really touched me, though all but the one were good.
Justin Hayward's semi-autobiographical 'Say it with Love' speaks very eloquently the message of love the Moodies have been preaching for four decades. 'Bless the Wings' is as pretty as anything Hayward has ever penned. This tale of separated lovers really speaks to the heart. 'Is this Heaven' is a catchy, sweet, love song with great harmonies. It sounds like it came from a simpler time- circa 50's or early 60's. I'm really not wanting to end Justin's review on a sour note but his song 'Say What You Mean' is the one track that I could have done without. I'll just simply state that nothing about it resonated with me on any level. But overall Hayward is as good a singer and lyricist as he's ever been.
Ray Thomas just shines with his simply stunning 'Celtic Sonant'. The lyrics and music are just gorgeous. The man's baritone voice is such a pleasure to listen to. His talents and contributions to the MB's are so underappreciated, IMO. We love and miss you Ray and wish you well.
I can always depend on my favorite Moody, John Lodge, to touch me emotionally or to just plain rock me. He does both on this album. His unique, almost ethereal voice is especially good on 'Magic'. The catchy, fast beat shows he can still rock it. In the chorus Lodge sings "baby work your magic on me". He's been doing that to me and countless other Lodgie lovers for decades now. The beautiful 'Lean On Me' is now a concert favorite of John's fans. It is one of my favorite ballads of his. I'm sure he was thinking of his long-time wife wheh he wrote this one. When he sings it live, his face is so animated with love and joy. The orchestration works very well for this song as well. The bittersweet 'Shadows On the Wall' sounds so very comforting somehow to my ears. I love the "airy" quality of his voice on this one. Yes, I'm biased when it comes to John Lodge. I readily and unashamedly admit it- lol!
I highly recommend 'Keys of the Kingdom'. To my heart and ears the Moody Blues are still great. I hope they bless us with many more years of their musical magic. I know this is is corny but I'm gonna say it anyway: I know to all their fans, the Moodies have had the 'Keys' to our hearts for years.
correction.......2007-02-13
A reviewer below states that John Lodge handles the backing vocals pn 'never blame the rainbows...', and Ray Thomas is absent. This is untrue. The backing multi layered vocals are indeed by Ray you can undoubtebly hear his voice.
3.75 stars- Better than some of the albums that came before.......2006-11-14
I just listened to this for the first time on my car stereo and it doesn't sound half bad and the sound quality is very very good. None of the songs sound like big time hits or anything but it still sounded pretty good for a first listen. This sounds a little bit better to me than the album SUR LA MER did, and as a whole, better than THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE did. I might have to give it a couple more spins to know how much I like it, so I might be back to knock it up to four stars sometime.
Moody Blues/Keys of the Kingdom.......2006-10-03
I was in the middle of a department store shopping, when this song came on and i stopped right there because i immediately knew it was the Moody Blues, but it was a new song! I fell in love with all the songs on the tape. Out of all the MB tapes, Keys/Kingdom turned out to be my favorite!
The Moodies' Kingdom .......2006-05-22
Looking at the other reviews, it seems that the Moody Blues' 1991 release, "Keys Of The Kingdom," is sorely underappreciated (to say the least). Well, I say too bad for the other reviewers. I've always liked "Keys Of The Kingdom"! Despite the addition of session players and smaller contributions from keyboardist Patrick Moraz (in his final album with the band) and drummer Graeme Edge, "Keys" is an excellent, solid Moody Blues album with many wonderful songs. Highlights: Justin Hayward's "Say It With Love" and "Bless The Wings (That Bring You Back)" are both strong numbers (and the band still play them live to this day), as well as the excellent pop of "Hope And Pray" and the atmospheric "Say What You Mean," John Lodge's breezy "Lean On Me Tonight" and the exuberant pop-rocker "Magic," and Ray Thomas' lovely return to recording with the group (after being absent for two albums) with "Celtic Sonant." Now, if you really, truly believe that "Seventh Sojourn" was the last great Moody Blues album, then you may as well move on. But if you're a diehard Moodies fan who knows better than that, then you will find *plenty* to enjoy on "Keys Of The Kingdom." It's a great, uplifting, feel-good Moody Blues album. So please ignore those silly naysayers and add this fine Moodies disc to your collection.

Robert Harrison, the creative force behind Future Clouds & Radar, set an ambitious goal for himself and his musical cohorts: to create a double album that sustained itself in every regard from beginning to end. Having suffered a serious spinal injury five years ago, he was confined to his bed for a couple of years as he slowly recovered. The 27 songs he brought to his band are not so much a portrait of a man on the mend as a look at the emotional and creative forces that whirl through an active mind in a still body. While the utter sprawl of pop smarts, riveting hooks, mesmerizing arrangements, and alluring lyrics bring forth comparisons to Robert Pollard, there's greater sonic variety (including judiciously deployed horns at crucial junctures) and painstakingly finessed production decisions. The songs call out for attention on first play; subsequent listens yield a world of subtle nuances and surprises. Harrison met his goal: file this next to the White Album. --David Greenberger
Album Description
Heavily influenced by cameras, the asterisk, loss of any kind, and Bill Monroe's falsetto, Future Clouds And Radar is the latest creation of Robert Harrison, best known as the leader of Austin cult-reggae-heroes Cotton Mather; hailed by NME as "the most exciting new guitar pop band since Supergrass", handpicked by Oasis to join them on tour, and most recently, featured on Little Steven Van Zandt's "Coolest Songs In The World Vol. 1". Paste Magazine hails this record as a "magnificent double-disc collection of Flaming Lips/13th Floor Elevators/ELO-inspired psychedelic pop gems. Move over, Robert Pollard."
Customer Reviews:
Robert Harrison shines.......2007-05-28
This is basically a Robert Harrison solo album. Robert was the genius behind the highly underrated band Cotton Mather. The sound is looser & more alternative leaning than Cotton, but Robert covers just about every genre of music here & he does it all beautifully. Easily one of the best releases of the year!
Album of 2007.......2007-05-21
Hands down, as other previous reviewers have stated, this is without doubt some of the most inventive pop writing anyone will encounter this year. Not being familiar with Robert Harrison's previous work with Cotton Mather I decided to listen to what buzz I had been reading surrounding this piece of work. Harrison has simply absorbed and assimilated Beatlesque melodies as well as a plateau of 70's pop greats and reinvented those influences, coming up with an album that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as any masterpiece of the past.
An amazing work that beacons you back time and time again!
a cracker!.......2007-05-18
NPR's introduction to a recent in-studio performance from FC&R's Robert Harrison questioned whether this "double-disc debut is pure genius with blind ambition, or the product of an excess of ideas." It's a reasonable question for someone who has listened to the record 10 times or so. Any fewer rotations and the listener will firmly be in the excess of ideas camp. Any more, and they're probably leaning in the genius direction.
On the surface, FC & R is a very different vehicle to Harrison's former band Cotton Mather. Certainly, no one will tag this album as Revolver-era Beatles. Lovers of Cotton Mather's masterpiece Kontiki will sigh at that claim, but should not despair. The album contains a bunch of quality, jangling rockers: Let Me Get Your Coat, Hurricane Judy, Drugstore Bust, Holy Janet Comes on Waves (complete with a hook from Cotton Mather's Payday), Our Time, Dr No, & Great Escape to name just some, and only one song sounds anything like ELO! (ref: Amazon product description).
There is also a bunch of mid-tempo numbers, as radio friendly as any of Harrison's tunes since Cotton is King (Back Seat Silver Jet Fighter, You will be Loved, and the best one, Build Havana).
One of the more challenging aspects of the record for the listener, certainly for a longtime Cotton Mather fan, is the frequent use of horns. While a successful and almost track-defining addition to the first cut, Birds of Prey, elsewhere they are intrusive and their use clumsy and distracting (Hurricane Judy, Back Seat Silver Jet Fighter). And then there is the general `tween song weirdness that peppers the disc - sound bites, aborted tunes and feedback. Most of this actually adds to the texture of the record, but at times is a failure (Quicksilver 2, which is a reprise of an earlier track and opens disc 2, is pointless and features amateurish fade-in and fade-out). But the positives really massively outweigh these minor qualms.
FC & R is a big recording with many styles. At times it is adventurous and challenging. Cotton Mather it is not, but I no longer care. It is the best record I have heard in at least a year. Imagine the hoo-ha if Wilco had made this!
Robert Harrison Could Sing The Phonebook.......2007-05-17
It's so nice to hear this guy again, and he is still as quirky as he was with Cotton Mather.
Cotton Mather Orchestrated And It Works!.......2007-05-08
Other reviewers have mentioned the prior pop music contributions of Robert Harrison, leader of this group. At the helm of the Beatles-inspired pop rock group, Cotton Mather, he was responsible for two of the greatest releases of the '90s, namely "Kontiki" and "The Big Picture". For those not familiar with the vocal qualities of Robert Harrison, his sound is reminiscent of John Lennon which, of course, reinforces the Beatles connection.. Therefore, it is impressive how fresh sounding and non-derivative is the music that Robert Harrison produces.
Coming some six years since Cotton Mather's last effort, this release shows unmistakable links to the past in that Harrison "still has it" in terms of his ability to write great pop songs. That is really where he excels relative to some of the influences mentioned as contributing to this group's sound. Yes, there is a probable Flaming Lips' touch in the orchestral elements and psychedelic flourishes ala that group as well as 13th Floor Elevators. However, the songs here are, for the most part, outstanding, much better than those of the "influences".
Over the span of two CDs, there are only a few cuts that I would classify as filler. The highlights: "Let Me Get Your Coat", "Drugstore Bust", "You Will Be Loved", "Quicksilver", "Holy Janet Comes On Waves", "Our Time", "Build Havana", "Back Seat Silver Jet Sighter", "Malice Of Stars", "The Great Escape", "Altitude", "Armitage Shanks", "Safety Zone". I agree with another reviewer that this is the best popular music release thus far in 2007.
