Product Description

Heavy Metal or Heavy Mellow? What if Slash, Kirk Hammet, or Richie Sambora learned the piano instead of guitar? It would have sounded something like this... Pianist Scott D. Davis reveals his rock roots with his latest CD "Rockfluence", performing some of his favorite rock songs, guitar solos and all, with nothing but a solo grand piano. Includes songs originally recorded by Guns 'N' Roses, The Eagles, Evanescence, Metallica, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Linkin Park, Bon Jovi, Journey, Europe, Billy Idol, and one Scott D. Davis original.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Blend of Piano Solo and Rock-N-Roll.......2006-06-30

Scott's music is soothing as well as entertaining, emotional as well as inspiring, gentle as well as invigorating. You have to listen to it to catch the blend and beauty of his work.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-02-20

I just purchased this CD today, and song after song I just smile and think "this is so beautiful", and it's mostly original hard rock songs, it's like an oxymoron but it is wonderful. My 7 year old daughter doesn't know the songs originally, and she kept saying how the songs were bringing tears to her eyes. I got this CD after hearing him at the Galleria Mall in Roseville, Ca. because it was so awe inspiring as he played. I wanted to share it with my family, especially my 5 year old who can play music on the piano from ear, which aparently is how Scott started playing himself, and I wanted his music to be an influence to her. He is a true inspiration. Thank you, Scott, for sharing your talent with us.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2006-02-07

Pianist/composer Scott D. Davis has been referred to as "the rocker of new age/contemporary classical music" for a couple of years now. When fellow pianist/composer David Nevue introduced Davis as such at a Whisperings Solo Piano Radio concert something resonated within him. He had been urged for years to record an album of recognizable cover music, but he resisted, preferring to record his own original material. Somehow, Nevue's introduction freed Davis to return to the music that helped shape his energetic performing style and to create solo piano arrangements of some of his favorites. It's a wide-ranging collection spanning thirty-two years of rock and metal music from 1971's "Stairway to Heaven" (Led Zeppelin) to 2003's "My Immortal" (Evanescence). Davis stays true to the spirit of the originals, and yet makes them his own. Actually, there is one piece on the album that is newer than 2003 - Davis' own "Scherzo." Most of the twelve tracks are intense and rather dark - no bubble-gum teeny-bopper stuff here - so it's obviously geared for a more mature audience. Even though I can remember just some of the words to the oldies that I grew up with and wasn't familiar with the more recent hits, I thoroughly enjoy this album. There should be at least one song here that just about anyone can say, "Oooh! I love that song!"

"Rockfluence" opens with "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses, a song full of rock-style tenderness and love. "Hotel California" is given a full almost-eight minute treatment that is very true to the original. "My Immortal" by Evanescence is a quieter slow-dance ballad that Davis fills with passion. "Nothing Else Matters" from Metallica is dark and very intense - a beautiful arrangement! I couldn't quite imagine "Stairway to Heaven" as a piano solo, but it works well! I really like the mystery and drive of "Wanted Dead or Alive" from Bon Jovi. "Open Arms" from Journey is one of my favorite songs from the early `80's, and Davis keeps it warm and loving - also a great arrangement! Another favorite is Europe's "The Final Countdown," a powerful, emotionally charged song with a gorgeous melody. Billy Idol's "White Wedding" really rocks, leading up to the closing track, Davis' own "Scherzo," a musical term that means "joke." I first heard this impressive piece in a live setting, and it really makes people sit up and take notice! Davis' fingers fly all over the piano with the various themes of the piece, which range from slow and almost sedate to a wild and crazy romp that makes me think of chase scenes in old movies. "Scherzo" clearly demonstrates Scott Davis' playing chops as well as his musical sense of humor. Fun!

"Rockfluence" is truly a musical good time, showing what these rock classics sound like stripped down to one instrument and no vocals. Good stuff!

1 out of 5 stars Say your prayers little one... yeah, pray your ears don't start bleeding........2006-01-03

After receiving and listing to the "Say your prayers little one: The String Quartet Tribute to Metallica" I found I was rather disappointed in the "tribute" album.

Enter Sandman: The opening is weak... and as forceful as Metallica opens it, it seems like a simple lullaby when played by the Quartet. The notes are wrong, not as punctuated at they could be with clean cut offs and too much dragging out of the strings with the vibrato effect. I expected more thunderous bass lines and didn't appreciate the creative changes made to the song. The Freddy Kruger-like voice reciting the prayer is too over the top, and the changing of that prayer took away some of the poetic beauty of the original song.

Ride the Lightening: The wolf howl heard at the beginning of the song should have never happened. Tragically played... again, choosing to alter the notes rather than stick to the original composure of the song leaves one thinking "What in the hell was that?" Less dragging out of notes on this one... and it's less painful that hearing Enter Sandman. Some of the Quartet's changes from the original version are quite suiting to this song.

One: Not too bad on the ears... but the tempo was just a tad too fast for my liking. This song, when played on classical instruments should not be sped up. To me, the sound of One being played at a slower speed is much more useful, and enables the pain and heartfelt-ness of the original song shine through. It has it's high points, but they are few and far between.

Master of Puppets: The opening is rather nice... until they really get going. I'm noticing a pattern by this point of these guys changing the notes in the songs for reason I can't understand. Cheesy sound effects through out drag this down terribly and make this great song sound rather bad. Don't hate it completely, but I'm not loving it either.

Unforgiven: This is the only song I really like up to this point. The opening is lovely, with a single bell tolling as a lone violin starts up... the entire opening is lovely actually. I was impressed, and the changing of the notes played is suitable for the violin in this number. Great and impressive to the end, this movement, moved me.

Wherever I May Roam: After all that moving from Unforgiven I had picked up some momentum and I came to a dead halt when this one came on. The drum like noise opening this made me cringe, and the constant throbbing of the bass confused my now bleeding ears. They're fast when they should be slow, and slow when they should be fast. Again, more creative note changing in this one.

Through the Never: More stupid sound effects... maybe it's a whistle? Or a garbage truck backing up? Not sure, but that needs to go. Maybe it's just me, but it didn't sound too much like Through the Never to me. This should never have happened. At. All. They shouldn't have even thought about it. Whoever said "Hey, let's cover this one!" Should be slapped stupider than he/she already is.

And Justice for All: Eh.... I don't even listen to it. I tolerate Metallica's version because it's them. But I won't sit through this one. You'll have to find out for yourself.

Hero of the Day: A diamond in the rough. Not too much note changing... and no lame ass sound effects. Pretty moving and surprising, though the ending leaves so much to be desired it's retarded.

Fade to Black: SLOW THE F*CK DOWN! This song is not meant to be played at the speed of light. Again, another good song that would usually sound beautiful on classical instruments is mangled in the need to make it faster. However, it's a nice cover minus the playing at the speed of death metal at times. Sheesh.

Nothing Else Matters: Okay, these guys have serious issues with tempo. Perhaps they don't know what it is? Go back and read what I said about Fade to Black and you have this song.

All and all, I would pass this album by if I actually had to buy it. But if you're like me, and must have any and everything Metallica, then by all means, buy it. I'd advise you didn't get too excited about it though.

If you want good covers of this in the classical type genre, I'd recommend you get Apocalyptica's Inquisition Symphony. Though it only has the Metallica covers for For Whom the Bell Tolls, One, Fade to Black, and Nothing Else Matters, it has a few original works, as well as covers of Sepultura, Faith No More, and Pantera. Much easier on the ears and mind... as well as doing justice to Metallica's greatness.

1 out of 5 stars pointless.......2004-07-18

Why would anyone buy this when you could pick up an Apocalyptica album instead? Rather than this half-assed cash-in attempt with no imagination or passion behind it, check out Apocalyptica's "Plays Metallica By Four Cellos" or "Inquisition Symphony". They do much better string versions of Metallica songs.

Yes it's true! And not only that it's awesome. "Nothing else matters" is the best on the cd.James's vocals and guitar,Kirk's and Jason's guitars, and Lars's drums together with an orchestra makes for the perfect fusion of classical and hard core.GET IT!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2000-04-21

Whow! Thanks Metallica. This song is so great. First I want to say that I didn`t really heard Metallica until I saw this song in the Dutch Millenium charts(it was rated very high!). I was a little ashamed that I never heard their songs. But only with this single I now already know how great Metallica is. I keep listening it, and I noted the song so my brother can do the Strings with his keyboard and I can do the guitar part. I didn`t even knew that the song was more than six minutes long! And the extra tracks are also very good (new one:-Human). This is really a must for everyone!

What can I say....it's a good collector item... And a good for the introduction purposes... for people who just landed from Mars....so they did not know who Metallica was.... Classic Nothing Else Matters...Heavy New - Human...and very very enhanced For Whom the Bell Tolls....Enjoy!

This CD has a powerful anointing the same as Marvin Sapp's other CDs. The song Power, lets us know that God will give us power to live right for Him. We Need You Right Now is saying how we need God right now because of the condition that the world is in. All of the songs are really uplifting. Marvin Sapp is truly anointed. I have mostly all of his CDs.

5 out of 5 stars He Goes Over The Top!!!.......2001-10-12

"More and More" is a jammin' song. I play it over and over and over. "We Need You Right Now" makes me think of the world, and how bad it has gotten. Kids shooting up schools, killing one another, dying innocently by immature and careless parents, and the events that took place September 11. We do need the Lord now more than we've ever needed Him before. The world has gotten out of hand. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. Lord Jesus, we need You right now! This CD is a blessing to me, especially "Power". God gave us power to talk, walk, pray, and live right. Amen! Uplifting!!

Two Questions: Was this the audition tape for "Vienna Idol?" and What would Simon Cowell's say?

    1 out of 5 stars How sad.......2006-04-16

A terrible try to match Libera. Someone said it right: how dare those people use such marvellous voices to create such ugly
thing? Let Libera deal with amazing new age music, let Vienna Boys Choir continue being masters of their domains: classical music.

1 out of 5 stars Not their style.......2006-03-31

I was expecting something a lot better. One can't fault the choir for the recording. The fault lies with the director, arranger, and producer. The instrumental accompaniment over shadowed the boys singing. The arrangements of each song was too similar, and the boys sounded too restrained for this style. Pop is not the musical style of the Vienna Boys Choir. They need to stick what they do best - classical and sacred music.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps The Greatest Gag Gift Ever!.......2005-12-07

The greatest thing about this CD is that it wasn't meant to be funny! Upon listening to "Burning Down The House", I was seized with a fit of hysterical laughter that nearly broke a rib. And the laughs keep coming. Need a smooth tune for that special gal, try "Fantasy", she will be yours! Need a good jogging tune, "Get Down" should serve your purpose. A CD that will offer hours of entertainment. Guaranteed.

I got this as a gift because my friend saw a holiday cd with Vienna Boys Choir at my house. My advice:listen to the music previews before you buy the cd. It's too freaky for me. Good Luck.
