This "back-to-the-roots" road-trip documentary CD/DVD from blues-rocking guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd can be viewed in two ways--it's either the culmination of a long-held desire to promote and play with some unheralded blues veterans before they pass away (as six had already done since the recording was made, 2½ years before its early 2007 release) or a way to regain the blues audience Shepherd all but alienated on his artistically and commercially disappointing 2004 hard-rock release, The Place You're In. Ultimately, it succeeds on both accounts. Regardless of the project's inspiration, the results by and large justify whatever the means might have been to get this show on the road--literally and figuratively. Shepherd hit the highway for a week and a half along with producer Jerry Harrison (ex-Talking Heads), a portable studio, and backup musicians including the rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. He searched out blues artists both obscure (the late guitarist Etta Baker, who plays in her kitchen, is a highlight) and better known (Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and B.B. King) for a series of acoustic and electric jams, all of which feature Shepherd--who, to his credit, generally keeps his hot-dogging tendencies in check. A closing concert featuring members of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters' bands never quite generates the heat it should, but country bluesmen Cootie Stark, Neil Pattman, and harmonica ace Jerry "Boogie" McCain provide plenty of sparks. Shepherd seems sincere enough, but the real stars are the ageing musicians who have maintained their chops and intensity through a lifetime of performing music that clearly comes from the soul. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Blues greats, best of blues artists.......2007-07-07

Wonderful DVD/CD chronicling major historic blues artists - one of a kind album - a 'must have' for the blues enthusiast. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-07-04

I bought this CD/DVD AFTER seeing KWS in concert at Viejas here
in San Diego. What a treat to see and hear Pinetop Perkins and
Hubert Sumlin among others! My estimation of KWS as a performer
and good guy increased by a quantum leap after seeing the show.
He may be one the best guitarists I've ever seen live, and he
respectfully kept that fiece talent in check when the others were
stepping out. He seems a real gentleman as well as lover of the
music and the people.

The package is excellent, a real gem. The interviews and background
materials are touching, especially of the folks that have since passed.

BUY THIS CD. THESE GUYS ARE THE REAL DEAL. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-07-04

This is actually my second purchase of this item. When I purchased one for myself and realized how good it was, I purchsed one as a gift for a friend. Highly recommend for anyone who loves the blues.

5 out of 5 stars As real as you can get.......2007-06-27

I stumbled on this by accident while looking for another blues cd (big blues fan). I read about how Kenny Wayne Sheperd wanted to connect with these old blues pioneers and it sounded like it might be worth a try.He and his crew have put together one of the most entertaining documentories
I have ever seen. The cd is fantastic as well with track after track of pure blues. If you are a blues fan this DVD/CD combo is a must. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING cd..........2007-06-23

This is one of the best works of pure music I have bought in awhile. Not very often do you buy something where the artist really tried to make a statement with the music, but here, they do. For KWS and company to just go out, find the ROOTS of the music we listen to today, and make music on the spot with them is just amazing. Too bad they didnt bring more film to document even more than they already did. I could watch that footage for days. Everything here is beyond top notch. Very insightful, provides a glimpse of where the music came from and where it is going. If your a fan of ANY kind of blues, southern, or just guitar led music...you will love this.

Though the band likely didn't know it at the time, this would prove to be the last studio record by one of the most famous rock & roll bands in the world. Drummer John Bonham died shortly after its release. Although nothing compares to early Led Zeppelin--and they lost many longtime fans in the late 1970s--this LP is nothing to be embarrassed by. They were quick to embrace and experiment with synthesizers, and while it wears a little thin by record's end (the synth-bloated "Carouselambra" and the slick AOR hit "All My Love"), it adds a certain majestic tone to the heavy-hitting opener, "In the Evening," and gives a rollicking good-time feel to "South Bound Suarez." Plant's howl and Page's bluesy guitars are in fine form on "I'm Gonna Crawl" and the lilting "Fool in the Rain" recalls the pretty numbers from their early career. --Lorry Fleming

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars changes are sometimes good.......2007-07-15

In Through the Out Door has been the subject of mixed opinions for quite some time. True, the album wasn't regarded as a classic the year it came out, but over time I think people are slowly but surely beginning to realize the quality of the songwriting is pretty much on the same level that it used to be for the Zepsters.

My dad is convinced that "In the Evening" is the only song on the album that stands up with everything else the band had done previously. I might agree, to a certain extent. I mean, it's a really experimental type song that actually works well. "South Bend Saurez" is perhaps the most under-appreciated song on the entire album. It's SO catchy, I love it!

"Fool in the Rain" has a nice rhythm section and pretty good vocals too. It's the kind of vocal melody that grows on you, or more specifically, something you'll appreciate more when you're by yourself and listening to it on headphones. "Hot Dog" is just a short funny little rocker. "Carouselambra" is straight-up awesome because the sythns really give the song a futuristic feel, sort of like Michael J. Fox's first reaction upon entering the world of 2015 in Back to the Future II. It progresses into other themes that are equally as impressive. Maybe the best song on the album.

Everyone knows "All My Love" as being the famous ballad. We all know what the lyrics are about, and because of the importance of the lyrics, it's a very meaningful song where Robert Plant pours out his honest emotions. "I'm Gonna Crawl" reminds me of something Elvis Presley would do, had he been alive by this point in time.

Overall, good stuff. Worth owning. It's not a classic on the same level as previous Zeppelin albums, but by itself it stands tall.

5 out of 5 stars atypical zep but still a classic.......2007-05-21

first, zep is one of the top 5 rock bands of all time, in this reviewer's opinion. though this, their last album, is not representative of the sound they forged in their earlier albums, in my opinion it is still a classic.

"in thru the out..." finds zep in a mellower mood, perhaps because they had matured, perhaps because of things happening in their lives, perhaps due to other musical influences [the advent of synthesizers, for one]. who knows. but this album still contains all the elements that made zep great -- the inimitable celtic-blues howl of robert plant; the masterful dynamics and production that marked all their work; the amazing rhythm section of bonham and jones; above all, the wide-ranging brilliant blues rock guitar of jimmy page. the songs still are primarily about love, loss, want and regret. and just the joy of rock n roll.

the texture of the music is still almost orchestral in its tapestry of sounds. the guitar playing, though more restrained, still runs the gamut from hard simple blues chords to intricate screaming solo's. the final two songs -- all my love and i'm gonna crawl -- end the album on a majestic, bluesy and masterful note. the latter in particular sounds like it comes the first decades of rock, but for plant's weary vocals and the powerful climax.

3 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin - 'In Through The Out Door' (WEA) 3 1/2 stars.......2007-05-21

Review no. 231. Originally released in the later part of 1979, I remember the very day this swansong of the mighty Led Zeppelin hit the stores. Myself and a few others planned on attending their concert in Chicago. But, of course their U.S. tour was sadly called off after the death of drummer Johm Bonham. Maybe not as great as Zeppelin's 'IV', 'Houses Of The Holy' or 'Physical Graffiti' (my personal favorites) but still a decent effort. Tracks that managed to make it to the late night 'FM staple play list' for at least awhile were the refreshing "In The Evening", "Fool In The Rain", the upbeat "Hot Dog", "All My Love" and the bluesy "I'm Gonna Crawl". Worthy of a place in your music collection.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars-- A new sound for the band's swan song........2007-05-09

In the wake of punk and disco, Led Zeppelin in 1979 must have looked very old. For what would end up being their last album, "In Through the Out Door", the band responded by embracing synthesizers and new sounds. This may have had more to do with the dominant voice on the record being bassist John Paul Jones rather than guitarist Jimmy Page, who was absent for large portions of the sessions, but under Jones' guidance, the band produced perhaps their most unique album.

This change in sound is apparent from the outset-- the churning, ambient noise intro of "In the Evening" signals the change before cascading in a descending, sweeping dramatic riff that recalls the best of "Physical Graffiti". Topping off a great fierce vocal by Robert Plant amidst the keyboard swirl is a fantastic, almost blunting solo by Page. The rest of the record doesn't stick to this path though, exploring everything from a feature for Jones' boogie piano (the superb "Southbound Saurez"), an electric rock take on country and western (the highly entertaining "Hot Dog") and a couple absolutely fantastic pop songs (the lilting "Fool in the Rain", with a fuzz soaked solo from Page, the tender, synth-string driven power ballad "All My Love"). Along the way, there's even an extended cut ("Carouselambra"), that while it's long and melodramatic, manages to hold interest and a great blues closer ("I'm Gonna Crawl").

"In Through the Out Door" is probably not for everybody, it's a very different Led Zeppelin, but I've often thought it was among the best work they've ever done. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Hey, she's my baby/Let me tell you why.......2007-03-16

A tough crowd, from all corners, has dogged "In Through the Out Door" for years and years, and I guess an album -- a document -- is ripe for the pickings through the eternities. The funny thing about all this "swan song" stuff is that Robert Plant, to just draw one of them out of a hat, was only 31 when this record dropped. Led Zeppelin played just about the best dinosaur rock ever made and then were made dinosaurs by the young, loud and snotty. Those folks too have come and gone -- Shane McGowan of the Pogues, is what? 49? last I read. Anyone who has seen the Holy Grail Led Zeppelin DVD sets released in 2003, knows it's futile to beef with hell's gods; they simply lord over the land no matter what the puny humans are up to in any given year. Compared to that stuff, which could easily be wrapped in gold and prayed over by the heathen rock worshippers that still lurk about in this fractured, screwed-up end-of-days world we live in, In Through the Out Door is thin gruel, indeed. But judged on its own terms, some very nice things are delivered. "All of My Love" was probably the only real pop hit this band ever had ("Stairway to Heaven" being a manufacture of fan favorite turning into tightening FM radio playlist staple; and "Whole Lotta Love" being more orgasm than song). That it doesn't sacrifice any dignity for the band is a pretty good point scored. "I'm Gonna Crawl," too, seems unjustly underrated in the canon -- an enormous, deep metal blues ballad tour de force by Plant that showed the band's ability to strip bombast (it's only not bombast compared to the rest of their work) while delivering a convincing emotional wallop. "In the Evening" is a conventional megaton blast that would have done well on "Presence" and there's also "Fool in the Rain," and the rest, well, doesn't do much of anything. So, that's two keepers, two pretty good ones and three that come along for the ride. Hence, three stars.

5 out of 5 stars "EVERYBODY SEEMS TO BE READY...ARE WE READY?.......2007-07-11

From the opening introduction to the last guitar cord ringing to fade out this is the Stones best live album and one of the greatest live albums of all time. There is a great debate going on the Amazom review board about this album it seems. Some think this Stones live album is not as great as it's reputation. Stating out of tune guitars, mistakes ... blah, blah, blah. The Stones are the greatest "rock and roll" band! Rock and Roll is not about being perfect....is it? I know that some would name other bands that they consider able to "blow the Stones away live",but this is not a contest of who can play the fastest or hardest. The Stones are not known for being technically perfect musicians. They are tremendous songwriters and have written many of the greatest rock anthems in history! I am a musician and their playing ability is excellent, but it is their style and writing craft that sets them apart. Their sound is seemingly easy, but just try to duplicate it. The Stones have an amazing ability to take a 3 cord progression and turn it into something special. Musically Brown Sugar,Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Woman to name a few are nothing more than basic rock tunes in the hands of any other group. Yet I have never heard another group pull off an exact sounding cover of any of their songs. If I want to listen to incredible musicians I throw on a Rush album,if I want to rock I listen to the Stones. If there is another live album that comes close it might be Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From The Road" The boys are smokin' on that one surpassing every one of their studio counterparts, but the Stones have more classics on one album than they have in their entire recording history. So, give me " Get Yer Ya ya's Out" with all it's raw wild power, because it rocks like no other blemishes and all! If I have one complaint about this album, they should have released the complete show. Satisfaction,Gimme Shelter and Under My Thumb to name a few songs done on that tour could have been added and their are incredible versions available in the movie Gimme Shelter of the Satisfaction and Gimme Shelter.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's that good..........2007-05-19

This is one of the best records the Stones have ever released. It is concise, powerful, intense, and brilliantly played. It is amazing how well Mick Taylor melds into the band, so recently added as he was by the time this tour started. I'm not convinced that the strict lead/rhythm method the band took on during his tenure is the best sound for the band. I think Brian Jones and/or Ron Wood weaving their guitars with Keith is better than Taylor's more constricting format, but this is still an excellent highlight for that unique stage in the Stones' history. I can't imagine Love In Vain ever done better than here with Taylor demonstrating his slide chops and his additions to Jumping Jack Flash, Midnight Rambler, Sympathy, and Street Fighting Man are excellent as well.
Furthermore, the band is truly scary on Midnight Rambler, Street Fighting Man is exhilirating and leaves you breathless, Sympathy is quite different than the studio version with good lead work by both guitarists, and Live With Me and the Chuck Berry covers are as rocking as any band ever gets (as well as being Keith Guitar School 101). There is simply not a dull moment or a bad song on this entire set.
As Keith pummels you with the opening hammer of Jumping Jack Flash just after Sam Cutler introduces the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World, you may come to realize that this document is the evidence that proves his Beatle-bashing boast beyond any doubt.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than Got Live.........2007-03-01

The first Stones Album, the first Live Album i ever bought was the first Stones Live Album and it was the first and only one i ever returned. I said the singing sucks and the playing is just damn awful. i was ready to give a whole list and fight to get my money back. Guess what? there was no argument, he agreed he said this was 'THE' album in the record section of Gimbel's Department Stores that has had the highest return to manufacturer at that time. I bought Ya-Ya's with a little please God let this be the one. It did not let me down. The Cover's and the Originals and singing plus Mick Taylor on Guitar was a corner stone to the album. I loved Brian Jones's work with the Stones and his betrayal was a key reason for the Stones sloppyness that was with them for a long time, included on their GLIYWI Album. Even though The Stones improved i still miss Brian Jones and his Musical Skills that made them hits. Can you imagine him on the Sitar and Mirimba at Concerts, today. Ya-Ya's Rocks, it did then, and in a Dinosaur Way, it still does.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Stones album.......2007-02-10

No question about it.
I could listen to The Rolling Stones covers of Chuck Berry's "Carol" and "Little Queenie" on this album
10 times a day every day for a year and never get sick of hearing'em.
"Midnight Rambler" played here is the definitive version of the tune.
The studio release pales in comparison.
The sleazy bluesy feel of "Rambler" captured on "Ya-Ya's" could never be duplicated in a recording studio.
The best part of this album though is in the first moments when a climactic energy seems to've gripped Madison Square Garden when the band is in the process of being introduced and taking the stage. You can practically feel the excitement and anticipation coming right thru your speakers from the crowd and the wild manner of the microphone announcements. It still brings chills to me imagining how that scene must've looked as it was playing out.
Again...my fave Stones record.A must have classic for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE REAL RAW ROLLING STONES IN THEIR PRIME! .......2006-12-02

I will be doing a review on the legendary masterpiece CD album entitled "GET YER YA-YA'S OUT," THE ROLLING STONES LIVE IN CONCERT by the band that has been called THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD! This album was originally released in 1970 on vinyl and cassette on the London Records label affiliated with ABKCO Records. This album saw its debut on CD in 1986 and re-released again in 2002 with the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding process bringing these Original Master Recordings TO LIFE! The matrix or ID number of the 1986 CD release is 80052. The 2002 CD release is 90052. If I find out any new information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible.

This live CD compilation highlights the Stones two (2) Madison Square Garden shows recorded on November 27 & 28, 1969. In my opinion, "GET YER YA-YA'S OUT" IS THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUM ever recorded by the stones and ONE OF THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUMS EVER RECORDED IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY. If you love the Blues and Hard Rock Blues, this album is DEFINITELY for you. This live album reminds me of all three (3) Parts of "Fleetwood Mac Live At The Boston Tea Party" recorded on February 5, 6 and 7, 1970. EVERY SINGLE SONG ON "GET YER YA-YA'S OUT" IS OUTSTANDING! I am going to list and briefly review every song track on this album to let you know just how GREAT this album REALLY IS!

All the songs in this album are my favorite and are in order as follows: (1.) "Jumpin' Jack Flash," (WHAT A WAY TO OPEN THE SHOW, THIS BLISTERING KILLER CLASSIC SONG DOES NOTHING BUT KICK SOME SERIOUS A*S!) (2.) "Carol," (THIS BLISTERING KILLER SONG KICKS A*S! A GREAT TRIBUTE TO CHUCK BERRY.) (3.) "Stray Cat Blues," (A BLISTERING KILLER SLOW BLUES SONG THAT KICKS A*S!) (4.) "Love In Vain," (ANOTHER BLISTERING KILLER SLOW BLUES SONG THAT KICKS A*S! A GREAT TRIBUTE TO BLUES GREAT ROBERT JOHNSON.) (5.) "Midnight Rambler," (WHAT A BLISTERING KILLER LIVE ROCKER! THIS SONG KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S AND SHOWS NO MERCY! MY MOST FAVORITE SONG ON THE WHOLE ALBUM. THIS SONG ALONE SINGLE HANDEDLY DEFINED WHY THE STONES ARE THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD.) (6.) "Sympathy For The Devil," (ANOTHER GREAT BLISTERING KILLER ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! THIS SONG IS MY CLOSE SECOND MOST FAVORITE SONG ON THIS ALBUM. THIS IS THE BEST LIVE RENDITION OF THIS SONG EVER RECORDED BY THE STONES.) (7.) "Live With Me," (ANOTHER GREAT BLISTERING KILLER ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS ONE.) (8.) "Little Queenie," (A GREAT BLISTERING HARD BLUES ROCKER DONE THE STONES WAY, OUTSTANDING! I'M SURE CHUCK BERRY IS PROUD OF THE STONES FOR THIS ONE!) (9.) "Honky Tonk Women" (THE STONES TURNED THIS SONG INTO A LIVE BLISTERING KILLER ROCKER! I LOVE THIS LIVE VERSION.) and (10.) "Street Fighting Man." (WHAT A WAY TO END THE SHOW! THE STONES TURNED THIS ROCKER INTO A REAL BLISTERING KILLER ROCKER THAT KICKS A*S) ALL THESE SONGS KICKED SOME SERIOUS A*S! I AM NOT EXAGGERATING! Guitarist Keith Richards and newcomer Mick Taylor (Formally from John Mayall who replaced the recently deceased original member and leader of the Stones, Brian Jones.) WERE ON FIRE WHILE PERFORMING AT BOTH MADISON SQUARE GARDEN SHOWS DURING THEIR LEGENDARY 1969 WORLD TOUR. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, the Stones 1969 World Tour was voted in the Top 20 as one of the GREATEST Tours of ALL TIME! It is just too bad that the Stones 1969 World Tour had to end so TRAGICALLY at ALTAMONT SPEEDWAY as we all know what happened on that fateful night.

In closing, This album is DEFINITELY worth buying and EVERY music fan should own this live album as part of his or her music collection. This live album is the Stones at their ABSOLUTE BEST and is a TRUE TESTAMENT of what was to come from the newly reformed Rolling Stones and Rock n' Roll. Today, The Rolling Stones continue to be the GREATEST LIVE ACT IN THE WORLD. THE ROLLING STONES ARE STILL THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD! I know because I have seen every single tour since 1981 and will continue to see every tour in the future till the Stones are no more. Thanks for reading my long review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES! LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! Rock out always and take care. J.L.

This one misses a golden opportunity by not including "Get Off of My Cloud" ("Just 'cause you feel so good, d'ya have to drive me out of my head?"), but that's about the only mistake it makes. In the few months since the release of Now!, the Stones' sound had grown harder; even a ballad like O.V. Wright's "That's How Strong My Love Is" attains a rumble that'll make you think a big truck is driving by your house. When Jagger drawled, "Buzz a while," in the middle of the group's debut the year before, he probably had no idea what his boys were soon to make of that command: "The Last Time," "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man," "Satisfaction." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great covers, great fresh original material...........2007-05-08

Listening to "Out of Our Heads" is almost like listening to two different LP's. The first 6 songs (Side One) are mostly covers of R&B chestnuts, with "That's How Strong My Love Is" being perhaps the most emotive. Which is saying something because the 3 tracks that precede it aren't too shabby either!! The live version of "It's All Right" is also a killer. On the next six tracks (Side Two)the boys mostly establish their own identity with their own material, including the definitive "Satisfaction." Either way, you can't lose, the pace transitions from song to song are very well handled, very nice staging!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Stones'Best!.......2007-04-06

Hello,

Thanks for getting this album out to me ASAP. I have this on vinyl and have finally gotten around to picking up a CD. "Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man" is an all -time favorite tune of mine and I am so happy to have it on a playable format. Thanks so much....

4 out of 5 stars Out Of Our Heads - a new era.......2007-03-15

Out Of Our Heads began a new era for the Rolling Stones. The songwriting team of Jagger/Richards kicked into gear with the classics Satisfaction, The Last Time and Play With Fire. But this album is also loaded with great material such as Mercy Mercy, That's How Strong My Love Is, Good Times, The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man and The Spider and the Fly. It's also got good filler tracks like Hitch Hike, Cry to Me, One More Try and the noisy live track I'm All Right. Essential album for a Rolling Stones fan.

3 out of 5 stars Best early Stones album, but they still had a ways to go at this point........2007-02-23

First, the good news: this contains two of the Stones' best a-sides to date (or ever, for that matter): The Last Time, a rockin' lvoe song with a cool guitar riff, and especially (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, easily one of the biggest songs of the whole decade. Just as good, if not better, is The Last Time's b-side Play with Fire, little more Mick's growl and harpsichord. Still, it's one of the most menacing songs ever. Anyway, a few of the other songs on this disc are good too - I like the country-sounding Spider and the Fly, The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man (b-side to Satisfaction), and the high-energy cover of Mercy Mercy. They rip through the song in typical early Stones fashion. I could do with pretty much every other song on the album, though (One More Try; Hitch Hike; Good Times; That's How Strong My Love Is), so it's hard to call this an essential unless you're a Stones freak. And if you see the UK version, try to avoid it - it drops the singles, replacing them with Heart of Stone. While Heart was a highlight of Now!, the singles pretty much make this album, so without them it's incomplete.

5 out of 5 stars First album i ever listened to.......2007-02-08

I was about 7 yrs old when i first heard this U.S version. Decades later it still rocks. Play it loud a few times, Jagger was just starting to really stretch out his vocals. I like all the songs on this album, Mercy Mercy is a great way to start. Don't buy the U.K. version this one is much better, usually i would suggest to buy the U.K. versions but this one is the exception. A true Classic. This was the last album the Stones made before they became huge everywhere, thanks to "Satisfaction" so it has a special quality as it was the last time they would recod a lot of covers. (cry to me is magnificent) Enjoy with the volume up

5 out of 5 stars The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

5 out of 5 stars A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

5 out of 5 stars A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

5 out of 5 stars I Love it !.......2006-09-06

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21

Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16

A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14

City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:

3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)

4 out of 5 stars Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25

1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:

Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny

Great cast ... great buy!

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2005-02-22

This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

4 out of 5 stars Only ONE thing could have made this a better CD..........2007-01-10

This awesome rock & roll album would have been even better had it included just one thing: the SINGLE version of "Free Ride", available on the "Edgar Winter Collection" from Rhino. It was the followup single to their huge hit "Frankenstein". Like Three Dog Night and a few other artists back in roughly that same time frame, a trip back into the studio was made to create even hotter versions of the songs to be played on the radio. The single version of "Free Ride" is just that much hotter, that much punchier and that much more full of life....and was a huge hit itself! One listen and you'll see what I mean. I'm not saying the album track isn't good...I'm just saying the single version just jumps right out at you, daring you to resist it. As for the rest of the album, I can't say anything that most of these other reviewers have said. One of the best of the 70s, full of great rock & roll music and a pure joy to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars Monster Album!.......2006-11-26

Arguably, Edgar Winter Group's best album, this chart topper fused standard rock with `monster rock' and plenty of synthesizers. Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer cut loose with these self penned songs. "Hangin' Around" and "Alta Mira" are fun dance rock numbers that portray Winter at his best. "Free Ride" and "We All Had A Real Good Time" became FM rock standards with their `party on' style. Not to pigeon-hole themselves as purely hard rock, "Autumn" is a rare and unexpected ballad showcasing the groups songwriting skill. Of course, "Frankenstein" was the monster hit here and it combined a new found use of loud drums and maximum synthesizer along with unique guitar riffs and Winter's own splendid saxophone. It's a killer album that stands the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable! Exciting and Yet Oddly Charming.......2006-07-17

I had really ever only known about Edgar Winter from their occasional spots on classic rock radio, with their tunes Frankenstein and Free Ride, never really thinking about what other type of music they made and shrugged them off as no more than a one-hit wonder.

But one I picked up the album about six months back and have listened to it probably fifty times through. It is very hard for myself to start playing it and switch to something out on my playlist without listening to it in its entirety. While none of the songs in my mind (except for Frankenstein) truly stick out (which is possibly why it is not more well known,) the album gels together as a whole so well that few albums match it in terms of pure consistency.

While many of the songs seem simple in appearance, the instrumentation, the dynamics, and the full-blown singing of the more uptempo songs give a level of sophistication, yet remarkable, fun sound to each and every song, all the while staying unique from every other. Added to this, is the even more surprising fact that the two love songs, Round and Round, and Autumn, are two of the most beautiful songs to ever come out of a rock album, let alone a hard rock one.

Hanging Around is one of the best openers one could ever hope to have for an album, infectious, fun, spirited, truly awesome.

When It Comes is possibly the raunchiest sounding Edgar ever sounded (if that's really him singing, I'm not really sure since it sounds as if there are nine different voices singing each of the songs with lyrics), other great, fun sounding song.

Alta Mira is very quirky, yet charming song that you can't help but sing along to. Has an almost Jamaician sound that makes it all the more infectious.

Free Ride needs no explanation, as it's impossible to live past the age of 10 and not have heard the song at least once.

Undercover Man is probably the only weak song on the album if only for the ending which I think it stretched out just a bit too long. Although, it's Edgar in very fine form in terms of loud, almost off-kilter singing.

Round & Round is possibly my favorite song on the album, with its wonderful mix and acoustic and almost country-rock sound. Beautiful.

A ridiculous change of pace from Round & Round (although that's not a bad thing.) The song is basically self-evident from the title... Rock and Roll Boogie Woogie Blues. It delivers perfectly.

Autumn, as said before, is quite possibly the most beautiful rock song I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Beyond gorgeous.

And almost lastly, another huge change of pace with quite possibly a song that perfectly exemplifies the college spirit (woot), with We All Had a Real Good Time. If there's a better song out there that keeps the fun, youthful spirit of us kids and of the basic tenets of Rock n' Roll, I've yet to hear it.

Well, if you're not convinced, then its at the fault of this reviewer and not the album.. for it is truly one of the best hard rock has to offer. Better than anything Skynyrd or Ted Nugent or Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin has to offer. And that's no lie. A wonderful standout from 1972 (although it's difficult for me to say that definitively, since I was -13 at the time.)

5 out of 5 stars A classic Rock And Roll Masterpiece.......2006-07-07

I purchased this album only yesterday and have listened to it over and over again. This is truly one of rock's few masterpieces. Hangin around is a fun opening song. Alta Mira is a nice rock and roll song. Free Ride is great well mixed too. And who could forget Frankenstein the masterpiece of masterpieces this is the best song in the whole world. You will be happy with your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Album..............2006-03-13

About the time this record came out, but before I ever heard of it, I saw the EWG at a roller rink in Elizabeth, NJ with my friends. They opened up with "Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll" but unlike the White Trash version with horns, it was dominated by Ronnie Montrose' raunchy guitar and I fell in love. I went as soon as I could to Korvette's, where I bought most of my records in those days, to get the new LP that Edgar mentioned while on stage. I took one look at the cover and said, "What is this......" I was happy that I bought it and I still go back to it frequently. In fact, I am probably in the minority here, but "Frankenstein" is my least favorite song and I usually skip it. But listen to all the other songs, starting with "Hangin' Around" and "When it Comes" and you will be hooked quick. The slow ballad "Autumn" and the latin sounding "Alta Mira" sound different, but all the tracks add up to one of the greatest LP's ever recorded. In my opinion, Edgar Winter never reached this level again.

4 out of 5 stars Blow your face out! J. Geils Band.......2007-02-15

An apt salute to the six studio albums of boogie rock that the J. Geils Band had recorded between 1970-1975, this 1976 live extravaganza showcases the band at their best--performing live! It is also a capable followup to 1972's Full House, which remains one of the best live recordings of any American band in the 20th century!
Released at a time when live albums were big sellers (Frampton Come Alive, Kiss Alive, i.e.), this underated gem gives the band a chance to deliver their best songs with irreverent energy and unstoppable rythym that'll have you dancing within the first two minutes of the opening "Southside Shuffle" till the last chords of "Give it to Me"
Some may find Peter Wolf's banter a bit lengthy and/or annoying in between many songs on Blow Your Face Out! Others may find Wolf's pre-rap, D.J.'ish chatter a novelty....Either way it's in-your-face fun!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Geils.......2007-01-12

The quintiscential Geils band live album. If you grew up in the seventies, this was the party album. Good sound and great energy.

5 out of 5 stars The J Geils Band at their best. .......2007-01-12

This album has great energy and captures the 'Live' J Geils Band experience very nicely. There is no comparison to actually seing this band live, but this (along with their "Full House" album) is as close as your ever going to get. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars J Geils Ultimate Live Record.......2006-12-02

In the history of the J Geils Band, "Blow Your Face Out" is their definitive live work. This record came as their Atlantic years were ending. No one knew but soon the EMI America years would start and the fame of the band would be achieved but, at the time of "Blow Your Face Out", Geils was still struggling to become the great success they later attained. So, we can look at "Blow Your Face Out" as their summing up of their struggling years and showing the road warrior mentality and experience that all those years can provide on a record.

It's full of their old material and captures their well known knack as a live band. As someone who saw the band in that era, this live record is as close as it gets to having been at a show in the 70's.

"Monkey Island" was their final studio record for Atlantic but, in reality, "Blow Your Face Out" was their real swan song to their past at that point and shows a glimpse of the greatness that was to soon come at EMI America.

Buy the record. You'll love it.

2 out of 5 stars Low energy........2006-07-13

Being a huge fan of J. Geils' "Full House," I was encouraged by some reviews here to believe that "Blow Your Face Out" was a similar live effort. But the only similarity is that they were both recorded live. "Blow Your Face Out" is funky and laid back. Not bad, if that's what you want. But anyone expecting something along the lines of Full House will be tremendously disappointed. In fact, "Lookin' For Love," which will knock your socks off on "Full House," is done as a slow, elavator Muzac tune in "Blow Your Face Out." Why did they even bother?

The energy level, which is consistently frenzied on Full House, rarely gets above "low" on "Blow Your Face Out." After listening to it twice, I realized there is no song on it that I want to hear again. Not that aren't a couple good songs on it. There just are no high energy songs other than House Party. I wasted my money.

5 out of 5 stars king of the delta........2005-10-24

Up until the day he died, Charlie Feathers told anyone that would listen (and even those who wouldn't) that he was Elvis Presley's main influence. Far be that from the truth, it is fact that Junior Kimbrough WAS Charlie's main influence. With that in mind, it's a shame that we were thrown into Junior's world at such a late time in his life.
Don't get too down about it though, this album kicks.

5 out of 5 stars 5 isn't enough stars for this one..........2005-06-08

Pure delta blues...electric and jammed out by one of the last remaining people who could sincerely play it. (R.I.P. Junior) Honestly, this is one of the best delta blues albums ever made. A lot of people have probably found Junior via RL Burnside....lemme tell you: RL is fun....Junior was great.
And that title...damn, is there a better name for a soulful blues album?

5 out of 5 stars best look into Juniors word that we'll probably ever get.......2004-07-05

Thia album was recorded in the last few months of his life. By this time Junior had been exposed to rock music, and his rythems had become harder edged as a result. This album is'nt as produced as some of his other CDs (not that any of them were over-produced), with three trackes taken live from his Juke joint. This CD is the probably the best window to Juniors world that we can get (that is Minus all the echo and Bad recording quality).

5 out of 5 stars crazy.......2001-10-25

as iggy pop is alleged to have said, "the first time i heard junior i just went crazy."

play it on bright sunny sunday afternoon in may and you'll still feel like you're half drunk on moonshine at 3am in northern mississippi in august. if you play it late at night god only knows where it might take you. unbelievably haunting stuff. by far my fav junior kimbrough cd, and one of my fav blues cds of all time (i've got somewhere between 100 and 200).

5 out of 5 stars WORKED UP AND WORKED OUT!!.......2001-08-07

Mr. Kimbrough done come thru with the dirt on this one. This aint just blues music, it's soul music right in there with Isaac Hayes and nem. It's hard played and honest and that's the true pleasure of it.

5 out of 5 stars Could easily substitute for a greatest hits collection.......2007-03-17

Undoubtedly the greatest Pointer Sisters album ever, 6 of the 10 songs on it would eventually end up on a PS Greatest Hits album. Contains the mega-classics "Jump (For My Love)" and "Automatic", as well as the better-known extended mix of "I'm So Excited" and "Neutron Dance", "I Need You" and Baby Come And Get It".

5 out of 5 stars Sister Act.......2007-02-12

Few artists have demonstrated the amount of versatility in their music career like the Pointer Sisters. After ten years of hits, misses, and everything in between, their success reached new heights in 1984. Break Out spawned four Top 10 hits, earned the sisters two of their three Grammy awards, was certified triple platinum, and turned the trio into queens of dance music. Listening to this album today sounds dated with the drum programming and synthesizers, and also as "Automatic" brings back the breakdancing trend, but also won a Grammy for Best Vocal Arrangement. The frenetic "Neutron Dance," still brings back the gospel in their voices, and the album-length version of "I'm So Excited," has the sisters concluding with the perfect, unmatched harmonies they've always had from day one. The slow and soulful "I Need You," shows the sisters trading leads in between pairing their voices, and the harmonies still flourish on "Jump", a Grammy winner for Best Pop Vocal and surrounded by the late June Pointer's energetic lead. And in an era where artists like Prince, Tina Turner, and Bruce Springsteen(the man who wrote the Pointers' 1978 hit "Fire")were becoming major sellers, while emerging acts like Wang Chung, the Thompson Twins, Cyndi Lauper, and many others were having hits seemingly overnight, the Pointer Sisters cemented a place for themselves in the middle of the decade. If you can't think of this album as a classic, then just consider it your occasional guilty pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Funky Urban Soul.......2007-01-02

One of my favorite albums happens to be The Pointer Sisters' 1983 album, "Breakout." As a fan of 80's music, I figured I should pay my respects and lend a boasting hand to this awesome 80's group and their music. Feel-good and exciting from start to finish, "Breakout" should be one of those time-capsule albums. Afterall, early 80's style funky urban soul can't really be defined better.

Now this is an album that I could keep in my CD player 24/7. How could you go wrong with such variety?

1. "Jump (For My Love)" - A wonderful opening song to get you hitting the dance floor right away. For first time listeners of this album, this will wake you up and make you wonder what is next. Synth-pop, peppy, fast and danceable. That's the best way to describe this song that hit the Billboard top hits of 1984.

2. "Automatic" - My favorite song from the album and one of my all-time favorite 80's songs in general. Unique and funky, this song is one of those that you can raise up your arms and move your hips to. Great harmonizing and trippy synth. Perfect for a song about being so obsessed with someone that you're "automatically" at their beck and call and basically zone out all other contact with the world.

3. "I'm So Excited" - You've heard this party-it-up song on movies and commercials. This is a classic from the Pointer Sisters. A great example of early 80's urbanized dance. The style of this song truly fits the feeling of excitement; like you're so full of energy that you can't contain yourself. Yes, this super feel-good, energized, fast-paced number will get you excited.

4. "I Need You" - The Pointers slow the pace down a bit on this soulful, easy-going piece. After the first three songs, this is the first kick-back-and-relax song. A catchy beat will make you slowly bop your head.

5. "Neutron Dance" - Extremely high strung, fast, and danceable. Hope your feet will be able to keep up! Go back to your chemistry class and burn up the dance floor at an amazing speed as if you were neutrons.

6. "Dance Electric" - This synth-pop piece of perfection features a bit of a slower dance groove compared to song #5, but is very catchy. Cool 80's-style synth melodies!

7. "Easy Persuasion" - A personal favorite, and another laid-back song. This smooth, soulful, dreamy groove with its silky melodies and heartfelt harmonies from the Pointers will have you hooked and "persuaded" that this is your song to relax to.

8. "Baby Come And Get It" - Bouncy and synth melody-laden. This is a fun, feel-good, dance song pure and simple!

9. "Telegraph Your Love" - How can you resist this funky-beat clad song? Showered with melodic synth, this number is probably the closest thing to the flip-side of "Automatic."

10. "Operator" - The Pointer Sisters chose to go out of the album dancing and leave us dancing in the end with this peppy piece complete with fantastic harmonizing. Enjoy!

So there you have The Pointer Sisters' 1983 album "Breakout" in a nutshell. It is impossible to not have fun with this album, so with this bit of "easy persuasion," "baby come and get it," "get excited," "jump," and "dance electric" until dawn.

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Often Get Any Better Then This.......2006-11-17

You know when all of the songs on the first part of your album are huge hits then you are really going places.Jacko knew it and so did The Pointer Sisters-'Break Out's first three songs alone-"Jump","Automatic" and "I'm So Excited" are just back to back to back classics, leaving only the midtempo hit "I Need You" before "Neutron Dance".And what's the best thing about 'Break Out'?No albums cuts-Ruth's poweful "Dance Electric","Telegraph Your Love","Operator" and the super funky "Baby Come And Get It" could have ALL easily been hits (and were in fact played a lot on the radio)."Easy Persuasion",the closest thing this has to a ballad is a nice change of pace but what makes 'Break Out' so unique is it's production. Not only is every song as pop perfect as it comes but it feels as if the layors of synthesizers and computers used to make most of this music are coated over again by several layers of Sherwin Williams heavy gloss coat-instead of sounding cold and electronic, the technology used here sounds more like a hot furnace, soulful and I must say very sexy.It really shows you that great talents like these sisters and talented producers like Richard Perry can make anything they wish sound like pure gold.Surely enough 'Break Out' is about as 80's as it gets but the hits (and even non hits) have withstood the test of time with grace.'Break Out' is one of the Top Five best pop records of the early 80's and is a must have for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars An 80s milestone, absolutely........2006-04-18

I remember when this album was first released in 1983 with a different mix, tracklisting, and even a song other than "I'm So Excited". ("Nightline"--a song that made its rounds at the time, being covered by Ellen Foley and Randy Crawford, as well.) I couldn't wait to get to the record shop to get the new Pointers LP with their new single: "I Need You". Sadly, this initial release from Break Out made only a modest dent in the charts. An honest, tender song it was, but the one to be released after it was the one that really perked radio and ears alike: "Automatic". Not only did it sound like nothing else that was coming over the airwaves in '83, it was also a brand new sound--an American sound in the midst of the second British Invasion. "Automatic" proved that tough, muscled American music at this point in history didn't have to be guitar-based rock-n-roll in order to have an audience. Ruth, Anita, and June had already been rocker chicks (with their Priority LP being the best of that phase of their career) and were out to conquer a new territory: The Age Of Machines. Richard Perry's been quoted as saying that Break Out was made with the intention of getting the Pointers back to their R&B roots, and soulful it is. But for me Break Out has long been the very first album by an American artist that brought machine-based music to the masses. This is the album that signaled the dawn of the techno that followed in the later 80s. Along with Eurythmics, the music on this album demonstrated that warmth, soul, and artistry were possible indeed with a computer and a drum machine. Softer tracks like "Telegraph Your Love" and "I Need You" were illuminated and sharpened by their techno foundations and enlightened and made plushy by the Sisters' sincere readings, while tracks like "Dance Electric" and "Baby, Come & Get It" are exemplary meetings of the rock-n-roll stage and the dance floor--on Mars! "Neutron Dance" is just about the best gospel Top 40 radio has ever seen; and the singles simply speak for themselves. My hope is that Break Out will eventually get remastered and re-issued in its original, un-remixed incarnation, which is really the best way to comprehend and appreciate what this gem accomplished and just how artistically and critically underrated it is. Even re-releasing it in '84 with a new track order, new mix, and the previously passed-on "I'm So Excited" was a clever way pushing a superior product into the market, making it a milestone record from more than just the aesthetic angle. Of course I'll take any number of bonuses on a re-issue (yes, even the omniscient "I'm So Excited"!) attached after the origial 10 tracks, but until then investigate this 80s necessity once again--or for the first time. It's truly worth it.
