From the first seconds of the film Inside Man, a compelling mood is set via the powerful music that accompanies the opening scene. The song, "Chaiyya Chaiyya Bollywood Joint" is an adapted, hip-hop-inflected tune (featuring Punjabi MC) from India's most famous soundtrack creator, A.R. Rahman. Those hoping for a full-on South Asian exploration should note that this is the only Bollywood number on the disc; the rest of the film is scored by Spike Lee regular Terence Blanchard (Malcolm X, 25th Hour,Bamboozled.) Blanchard--a former member of both Lionel Hampton's band and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers--has created moments of quiet beauty in the soundtrack; "Press Here To Play" is a pensive piano and trumpet journey that ends (too soon) at 90 seconds, while "Nazis Pay Too Well" is another highlight, a masterfully-mournful orchestral piece well worth further expansion. Those pieces aside, the lion's share of the soundtrack is a variation on one of two separate musical themes, both of which set an appropriate tone throughout the film. On their own, however, they are almost too soundtracky to play even as background music over dinner. For personal use, Blanchard's non-film, jazz recordings may be the way to go. --Denise Sheppard

Inside Man CD.......2007-06-10
Disappointing! We bought the sound track of Inside Man for the specific cut, "Chaiya Chaiya". After hearing the droning theme for 26 cuts, we finally heard Chaiya Chaiya...not the pure version that starts out the movie, but rather a rendition interspersed with Rap! Since we are NOT Rap fans, we were sorely disappointed.
Any ideas where we can obtain a CD with the original version and unedited cut of "Chaiya Chaiya"?
Good Strong Soundtrack.......2007-01-11
Bought as a gift--thanks! I know the music has been listened to many times over.
Compelling.......2006-12-11
I must be one of the few people who purchased this Score, who didn't like the Chaiyya Chaiyya Bollywood Joint. My reasons for purchasing this score can be summed up by the track '357'. My only regret is that is isn't a longer piece. A haunting piece of music, that stayed with me long after the film finished. This piece is replicated across many of the other tracks, but arranged differently each time. This score is a great addition to a good film.
A hidden gem!.......2006-11-10
This was a surprise soundtrack, i.e. "score" to a surprise movie; both were beyond expectations in complexity and nuance. The "world beat" sound of this is astounding, I can (and have) listened to it over and over again, finding something new each time. This is a complex melange of urban edginess and driving rhythmic undertones by an accomplished and, in my opinion, overlooked musician with still unplumbed gifts. Well worth the price for a gratifying piece of listening enjoyment.
What Song is that???!!!.......2006-08-16
Chaiya Chaiya Bollywood Joint! That's the name of that song at the end of the movie with the great beat! Go on now order it!

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).
"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi

And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20
Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!
Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21
For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.
Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21
Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.
The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.
What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.
I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...
Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.
You really can't be disappointed. I promise.
If only we could have a visual as well!
A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19
Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.
A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16
As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
The Soundtrack to Cinderella Man is great.......2007-01-11
Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack does not disappoint. They have all of the powerful songs heard on the DVD. It even has the songs that you could barely hear in the movie because they were simply background music to the scenes. For instance, when Mike Wilson and Jim Braddock sit down together after work and have a drink and discuss the troubled times their nation was facing during the depression, you can faintly hear a song called, "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky" by Roane's Pennsylvanians. That song is on here in its entirety.
The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.
Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.
This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.
Another good score from Thomas Newman........2006-11-07
Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.
Very nice.......2006-08-03
I suppose this would have been better, like another reviewer said, if some of the tracks had been more than minute-long cuts of the music from Cinderella Man. Still, it's a fantastic soundtrack!--I don't know what "conventional" meant when someone called it that, but if you like sad and somber music, you'll certainly like this. Try it. It's almost better than the movie itself, and the movie was great. After this, I have to hear Thomas Newman's other work.
Why..........2006-07-11
I dearly loved the movie, "Cinderella Man," and the music in it. However, why on earth, on the CD, did they play only a minute, or less, of some of the best music? Like, "Hope of the Irish," I liked that so much, but 52 seconds dosn't do it. In the film it was at least 3 minutes or more. I have decided not to buy the soundtrack simply because of this.
A fairly conventional score for Thomas Newman, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2006-03-25
Cinderella Man is, in a way, a return to conventional scoring for Thomas Newman. For a long while we've heard world instruments and percussion banging it out before stopping to allow beautiful themes to grasp our souls, but in Cinderella Man the effort is more restrained. It is largely a score for piano and strings, and fans of Thomas Newman will have heard the sound before. But, all the same, it is an enjoyable score for Newman fans of both kinds, and while it does take a while to get into a full expression of the story, it is definitely worth the wait.
The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.
Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

Love the CD, it got here relatively quick and the condition was pretty good.
Fantastic! .......2007-02-06
I don't have much to add to the other reviews other than to say I love this too, however, what I'd like to say is that anyone who loved Chaiyya Chaiyya from the Inside Man soundtrack and might be wondering whether to buy the soundtrack or buy this CD would be encouraged to buy this CD. I wanted to purchase one of the two to get this song, and I don't enjoy most soundtracks, and wasn't interested in anything else on the Inside Man soundtrack, so the main choice for me was whehter to get the Inside Track soundtrack for the special mix version of Chaiyya Chaiyya that was on the movie, or to get the traditional version which preceded that special mix. Having heard the other one on the sountrack, and now having listened to Dil Se, I can say that the version of Chaiyya Chaiyya on this track is great, and anyone who enjoyed the sountrack version will likely enjoy this one. The hip hop electronica rap stuff added to the sountrack version was cool, but this version is still fantastic and perhaps more authentic to the original intention of the artists. I'd venture to guess that anyone who loved Chaiyya Chaiyya may also love the other songs on Dil Se, as I've enjoyed them all.
My favourite song of all time is on here - Chayya Chayya.......2006-05-16
This original song made by Pakistanis was called "Thayya Thayya" and sung in Punjabi. If you listen to it you might recognize the first word Eid, an Islamic celebration. The singer is saying that his love did not come on Eid and is asking her to come back and basically singing about their love.
Allah Rakha Rahman, an Indian convert to Islam, remade the song into "Chaiyya Chaiyya" which means shadow, and is sung in Urdu, a more Islamic form of Hindi, since it is more usually spoken by Muslims in India and Pakistan. In fact, Bollywood prefers to use Urdu, as it is the language that is more recognized and respected throught South Asia, but proper Urdu and Hindi are very different. A bit off topic, but although Urdu is the official language of Pakistan, it is only 8% of the populations language at home, almost half the population speaks Punjabi, as do many Sikh and other groups in India. Hindi, though it sounds like the word Hindu as in the foollwers of the religion, is just a language, and Muslims in India speak it as well as Hindus.
Dil Se roughly translates to "from the heart". Allah Rakha Rahman also comppsed all the other songs of the movie and has many other great songs to his credit as well, so buying the soundtrack is definitey worth it. Who knows, it may lead you to buy other soundtracks of Bollywood movies he has directed. He even helped with The Lord of The Rings musical and Broadway hit Bollywood dreams.
The music video to the song was a big hit, as well as the song, and features the main actor Shah Rukh Khan, ultimate top superstar of Bollywod, dancing with Indian model, Malaika Arora. The video has them dancing on top of a train (which the song is supposed to sound like) amid a beautiful backdrop of sensational scenery in the hill station Ooty, located in the sate of Tmail Nadu, India.
Neither of the actors actually sings the song which is the case for almost all Bollywood films. Instead they have professional playback singers who sing the songs and the actors just lip synch and dance to them. The actual singers are Sukhwinder Singh (male) and Sapna Aswathi (female vocals).
[...] Since I've gone on long enough about one song, I'll just translate a little and explain the gist of the song according to the movie. The man has met a woman (not the woman singing with him on the train) and he sings about her and her attributes. For example, he says "she is like fragrance" (khushboo)and her language is like Urdu, since it considered a beautiful and poetic language in South Asia. Chayya means shadow. The song is about those whose heads are under the shadow of love and he's telling people to come to the shadows (of love). If you have a good ear you can make out the Arabic term for paradise JUNNAT since loving is like being in heaven.
Not good soundtrack,this is a GREAT ONE.......2006-04-24
This is A R Rahman at his best.
I have listened to it so many times
that I am almost tired of it.
The film I saw long after I knew the songs,
and this to me is his best collaboration with
the Indian film director Mani Ratnam along with
Kannathil Muthamittal (Peck on the Cheek). Bombay
is also good but Dil Se is the most thrilling of
these films. If you have not seen the film it is
worth seeking out -the ending is stunning.
Good one from Rehman.......2006-02-06
Rehman did a good job on this movie album. Not even one song is boring. My favorites are one sung by ARR himself and another one by Sonu Nigam.Dil se re has amazing vocals. Sat rangi re is Sonu's best performance so far.

Customer Reviews:
Great stuff.......2007-03-13
I have to agree with Chuck's high regard for this record. I will just say that I fully share his enthusiasm, so I won't repeat myself here. Suffice it to say that this is in every way a most satisfying album: songwriting is superb, execution is flawless and production crystalline. The Muse is indeed wide awake, spinning its gleaming webs of Progressive Magic, entagling the listener in its crystalline threads... Music to entrance and delight the initiated and to bewilder and befuddle the rest.
Not quite classic.......2006-11-04
It is hard to knock this CD because the muscianship is masterful, the compositions are stout, and the intricately woven melodies are amazing. The only issue I had was that while the newer compositions come across as more coherent, and more mature in a sense, they are missing that HTM "magic" that the older albums had. It was a certain whimsical energy, or flavor that was present in the older music that is lacking. The new music comes across to me more "technical" sounding-maybe a result of more modern recording equipment, etc.
I know it's maybe nit-picking, but there you have it. I still like it, will continue to listen to it, I can even overlook some of the new age elements that seem to creep in some of the "softer" melodies, but can't really compare it to the classic HTM works from their first album, or "Crafty Hands". Those are in a class by themselves.
YES (elp, genesis, floyd, tull, etc.) IT CAN STILL BE DONE!.......2005-12-09
I didn't give this recording a ***** without a good hard look at it, believe me. I am the most hard-core prog fan immaginable and I KNOW when it's good and when it's dreadful (which most of it in fact, is!) But hats off to the Happymen, this record's GREAT! (All caps, bold, underlined, italics...GREAT!) If you like prog rock (and why else would you bother reading this) YOU WILL LIKE THIS RECORD AND THERE'S NO WAY YOU WON'T! Stop reading my drivel now and click ADD TO CART before the damn thing goes out of print like most other good progressive albums over the decades have!
OK...I've got a grip now. Just can't resist mentioning a couple things about the product before I get offo' their bytes. My copy came in an attractive digipak which you might want to make allowances for protecting from scuffs and dents. Unlike one other reviewer here I have no problem with the way it was mastered. I don't find it too bright, brittle or digital sounding, but I admit I like my treble. Actually, I think the fact that it simply has the sound quality of a 21st century studio is what sets it apart from all other excellent prog works. THIS IS THE FIRST ONE RECORDED SINCE THE 70s that I've heard! I can't evaluate the recent prog-metal movement...my ears are too old for the noise.
Which reminds me to maybe mention the music...it's NOT noisy, which I find a great relief & refreshment. It does have a slightly harder edge on some cuts than HTM's 70s albums but by no means is it over the top. If you've heard those earlier records, I feel they both suffered from a bit of compositional meandering that HTM seemed (to me) to always fall into. Each number, while always relentlessly "progressive," never sounded like it "went" anywhere in particular. I realize that may have been their artistic intent but frankly it bored me and I never listened to HAPPY THE MAN or CRAFTY HANDS more than a couple times. the MUSE AWAKENS is MUCH better in this regard, without sacrificing any of the unique structures, intricate arrangements or "crafty hands" virtuosity fans know this band for.
No need to belabor each cut...they're all great to awesome and highly enjoyable. HTM maintains their own little corner on the prog market sound with this release, but if you liked the debut UK album, "Stepping Through Time" could've been its bonus track! The only minor critique I can think of is a bit too much improv- out on the closing piece, but after experiencing this wonderful disc, I'm sure you'll find it in your musical heart to forgive them. HTM has my deepest gratitude for proving that progressive rock can still be done, and done extremely well.
Fantastic comeback.......2005-06-18
This is a fantastick comeback for HTM. The Muse Awakens hangs right in there with the band's first two releases - Happy the Man and Crafty Hands. I would say they went out of their way to maintain the quality of the songwriting - and the same overall sound the band had in the late 1970s. HTM fans and all prog rock enthusiasts will want to have this disc in their collections. Well composed, well executed, breathtakingly majestic progressive rock.
Rosenthal emulates Watkins beautifully. I am really surprised how much he can sound like Kit - yet at times he manages to bring in his own sound as well. You can sort of notice Kit's absence as a composer - however, Rosenthal, Wyatt and Whitaker lay down some amazing stuff here.
My one criticism of this disc? It is recorded too bright. Too "digital" sounding. Too harsh. No warmth. And you can tell it really lacks bass when you get to the track "Shadowlites," one of my favorites. The remasters of the first two releases, which obviously were recorded analog, have better sound quality.
Other favorites include The Muse Awakens, Stepping Through Time, Maui Sunset, Barking spiders, Kindred Spirits ... they're all good, actually. A real feast for the ears and the intellect. It still gets five stars from me even though the recording is icy cold.
Happy their back.......2005-02-07
Yep, 5 stars. It's that good.
This album and return of Happy the Man will undoubtedly be a big discussion topic in the prog world for quite some time. Rightly so, this disk is pure musical bliss. The first track really grabs your attention and will have you eager for more in no time.
The waiting is over and it was well worth it. Their performance at Nearfest some years back was only a hint of the greatness to come that would ultimately set the stage for this studio release. The muse has awakened and the magic has returned.
Fans of good prog (hmm, is anyone a fan of bad prog?) will delight in this tastey offering. Fans of Brocolli Spears and the wonderful world of pop music will continue to be just as bewildered as ever.

Seven Genesis' tracks arranged for piano by two Norwegian musicians, reminiscent of Stravinsky's work for two pianos. The cover artwork is by Paul Whitehead who did several early sleeves for Genesis albums. Camino. 2001.

A worthy addition to your Genesis and related artist catalog.......2007-03-26
Don't be afraid to jump on this one! Unlike previous "symphonic" releases, this album stands up on it's own, and is an outstanding CD. This collection is well played and wonderfully arranged. I've listened to it almost everyday since buying it three weeks ago. A fresh look at some well-worn classic Genesis material.
Wonderful!.......2006-02-24
If you ever wondered why you're so fond of Genesis' music, you only have to listen once to these exquisite arrangements by Yngve Guddal and Roger T. Matte of some of the band's classic tracks. Beautiful songs, outstanding performances. Highly recommended, along with Guddal's and Matte's second collection in this series, "Genesis For Two Grand Pianos, Volume Two." A must for Genesis fans or anyone who enjoys great piano music.
A VERY good attempt at a Classical Transcription.......2006-02-23
I've been a long-time Genesis fan, and a classical music lover. The idea of having 2 pianos play these Genesis tunes is an attactive one, and these gentlemen have given it a nice shot. There are only 2 moderate complaints: The cd is a little short on time (they could have done another piece or two), and I wish they hadn't taken some of the rock rhythms so literally (on some of the melodies). To go this far in "classicalizing" Genesis, they could have taken these rock-stylized rhythms out--they sound borderline hokey. Fortunately, this doesn't happen too often. On the other hand, they did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of these compositions and covering the parts with four hands. Sometimes even the pianos seem to "rock".
Highly recommend!
Glorious Interpretations of Classic Genesis.......2006-02-17
It's hard to imagine how wonderful these albums are (this is the first of two volumes - the second is even better and hopefully there are more to come)
This is an album of piano duets of the music of the 70s progressive rock masters, Genesis. However, it is NOT a `tribute' album. 'Tribute' albums are often Velveeta-smothered cheeseballs, sometimes just plain old elevator music. Other times they're nothing more than limp attempts - with little or imagination - at marketing tools for aspiring prog bands.
But not the music of Guddal and Matte.
First, the music has all the passion of the original music, and then some. You can feel the love that Guddal and Matte have for the music of Genesis, and this passion is deeply infused into these recordings.
The concept of dual pianos is great, creating a synergy with different melody lines, and allowing for great flourishes and nuances. The whole is indeed greater than the sum of the parts.
Further, their arrangements truly reveal the brilliance and composing genius of Banks/Collins/Gabriel/Hackett/Rutherford. The uninitiated would swear they're listening to compositions by giants of classical music such as Gershwin or Debussy.
The song choices are not obvious, but rather interesting and daring. It's so wonderful to see underrated Genesis masterpieces like "Can-Utility and the Coastliners" and "Duke's Travels" receiving such superb renditions. "Down and Out" - another surprising choice - reveals the complexity and passion of this underrated composition.
Bravo to Mssrs. Guddal and Matte. Music lovers of all kinds are fortunate they've applied their considerable virtuosity to the great library of Genesis, and created wonderful, passionate, timeless interpretations of compositions that have stood the test of time.
Here's looking forward to Volume 3, and hopefully a series on the music of the other prog masters, Yes.
Almost Better On Piano.......2005-02-06
The piano is one of the most beautiful instruments. It can be so dark and deep, and yet so beautiful and moving at the same time. Genesis is a fairly deep and dark band, but it's hard to imagine listening to nothing but the stripped down melodies of their songs played by two pianos.
This is a clever ploy, and for once, it actually turned out great. There are string tributes for bands, and orchestral tributes, and even guest musicians covering or playing songs with the bands, and more often then not, it turns out to be total crap. Not Genesis For Two Grand Pianos.
This is a beautiful CD. It's hard to sum up the beauty of the piano, but to give you an idea; the CD retains a very classical feel. At the same time, the modern sounds of Genesis are brought through, only with a classic piano feel. The end result is absolutely amazing.
Imagine listening to Stravinsky conducting Genesis on classical instruments. If you can comprehend that, then you can sort of imagine what this CD sounds like.
My personal favorites on this CD are Fountain Of Salmacis and One For The Vine. However, the whole CD is strong, and there is not a single bad track.
If you enjoy piano music, classical music, genesis, or a combination of the three, I highly recommend this CD. Even though there are only seven songs, each one is played so incredibly well and with a considerable level of texture.
Screw the string-tribute-quartet. Pianos are in, and they fit this genre so much better.

Stand on the 'One'.......2006-02-25
I absolutely fell for Jon Gibson's music many years ago. So I am thinking how great to see his talents weren't halted by the overwhelming tides of change. He sounds heavenly, and blessed with joys some only dream of. I appreciate his 'song' and the vigor that keeps him pushing forward.
Be there for u.......2004-03-02
Yo..Jon that track 7 is hot..keep on doing what u do ,,thw whole entire CD is awesome..that background singing in that song is all that..falsetto is superbly used... tell Stan its all that.

YOU WILL LOVE IT GOD BLESS YOU AND MY BOY JON gIBSON
Jon Gibson Crafts His Second Best Album.......2001-10-21
Four years after his last 5-star and Award-Winning record, "Love Education," John Gibson's "The Man Inside" barely reaches 5-star status. The title track sets the tone with a head-shaking bass line and drum rhythm.
Track 5, "Don't Ever" will have you singing along to his layered vocals on the chorus.
"Fly With The Wind" is his jazz-infused Stevie Wonder-influenced number (especially on the part where he sings "hold on to my dreams") that includes smooth scatting and an excellent exhibition of Jon's incredible head voice & falsetto.
If you like the Stevie influence, Track 7 "There For You" is so Stevie, you'll think it was a straight from his "I Just Called..." session days. This song is different from the rest of the tracks in that real insturmentation is used. It makes a significant difference & immensely improves the quality of the composition. Yes, it's one of my favorites.
Alas, Track 13 is the song you'd think a boy band would sing--perhaps because it sounds so secular.
"Who Are You Fooling" is the Reggae-inspired track, average but fun to listen to nonetheless.
The final cut, "Let It Be Done" is a very mellow and relaxing song with extremely well executed vocals and piano.
Unfortunately Jon you need to diss the drum machines and synthesizers whenever possible. They're good to compose with, but the grooves will become timeless, phatter & more EW&F-ish. Jon's songwriting style just screams out for more vintage insturmentation & richer production. If Babyface Edmonds could remaster this entire album, it's double platinum. Unfortunately for the world, the record business has put a snag on Jon's rising star. So for now, he's still Christ's musical "ace in the hole".
Jon is Jammin'.......2000-04-11
Usually when first listening to CDs or cassettes that you don't really know about, you get that cringing feeling. However, Jon Gibson's CD is awesome. There is never a dull moment. The songs have a groove that you can move to as well as lyrics that stay with you. I find myself humming his tunes all day. Personally, I believe that his CD is another wonderful way that God has given us to keep our minds focused on praising Him. Thank you Jon for following God's lead and obeying His word.

Another fine addition to the series.......2001-02-13
After a bit of a slip with the second, this series was back on track with this third CD of songs cut from well-known musicals. As I mentioned in a previous review, just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). Once again, the songs are all good and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Mama's Talking Soft" (cut from Gypsy), "Big Fat Heart" (Seesaw), "Your Own College Band" (Where's Charley?), "When I Go Out Walkin' with my Baby" (Oklahoma!), and "Pick Up the Pieces" (also Seesaw). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This CD features some fine songs that deserve renewed appreciation.

Highly Recommended.......2005-09-13
I first heard Carptree in 2003. Their brilliant second album entitled Superhero from that year was my album of the year back then, and for good reason.
Man Made Machine is a strong forward leap from Superhero opening up new ground while retaining the catchy, quirkiness and brilliant melodious flavor of SH. The writing is sublime and the playing is extaordinary. And what do you know, the 'No Future Orchestra' from SH had a future afterall, giving solid foundations to the wonderful writing and playing of Carl Westholm and exquisit vocals of Niclas Flink.
The catchy hooks and quirky phrases combined with the Gabrielesque vocals of Niclas Flink remind me of another outstanding 'left of centre' album from 1975. Split Enz: Mental Notes.
All in all, Man Made Machine is brilliant, not instantly accessible but those who persevere will be highly rewarded.

Relaxing Christmas music.......2004-11-12
I've been a CGT fan for years but I never got around to picking this up until recently. I wanted some mellow Christmas music for putting on in the evenings when I've got a fire going and I'm just looking to relax. Overall it's a great CD and I can highly recommend it to anyone. I hate to suggest putting CGT on as background music, but frankly, this CD is perfect for it.
Probably the only song I'm not a big fan of is the first track "Carol of the Bells" which I find merely okay. However the rest of the songs range from great to fantastic (their rendition of Silent Night happily revives that oft played tune for me). If you like classical guitar, then this CD is a must have. If you are serious about music, well you just won't find many Christmas CDs with this kind of musicianship. If you are looking for something relaxing to play at Christmas, this is also a great CD for you. If you are looking for something for something with a bit of kick to it, this isn't your CD. (When I want something like that I tend to throw on Dean Martin or Harry Connick Jr.)
Wonderful music for the holidays.......2004-09-20
This is a great CD to put on when you want some light holiday music that won't overwhelm you. The guitar work is incredible and they do a great job of putting a fresh spin on some well worn territory. Still you can put it on when you have guest over and still be able to talk and enjoy the company without the distraction of lyrics. It makes for a very comforting background. I highly recommend it.
Great CD, I disagree with previous reviewer........2004-03-05
This CD is great to listen to, from the first track which is a really cool rendition of Carol of the Bells. It is a song that seems perfectly suited to their playing style.
The whole CD is great, as long as you can look past the fact that you will likely not get a present anytime soon despite the christmas songs.
OK Christmas Album.......2003-04-27
There's nothing really wrong with this CD other than it not being what I expected. I was expecting more traditional (perhaps heavier) guitar renditions of various Christmas songs. Instead, the music is lighter and more "California-ish." It'll serve as some background Christmas music, but there's nothing here that really grabs your attention.
