5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-04-26

Even without a single vocal, this is a lot of fun to listen to.Great instrumental rock.Satriani's best album and no weak material.Essential for fans of 80's metal and for fans of guitar oriented rock.Joe Satriani influenced a lot of guitarists including Dimebag and Zakk Wylde.Great job,Joe.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for all JS lovers.......2007-02-06

His sound has clearly improved over the years so this might not be the best place to start but when you get hooked this has to be in the collection. Can recommend the latest Live cd/dvd which also contains some of the numbers and personally I would say it sounds better then the studio track

4 out of 5 stars satriani.......2007-01-10

This is a great CD, older but totally joe. I need to get more of his music!

5 out of 5 stars Without peer.......2006-12-20

I think this album created the "guitar-god" phenomenon. Joe Satriani is without peer. SWtA samples numerous different styles with amazing technique. Someone listening to this now may not be quite as impresses by the technical tricks but keep in mind--no one was doing this stuff before Satriani.

Sure, there were plenty of amazing shredders that emerged in the 80s and 90s (and a couple new ones today) who might give Satriani some competition as far as technique, but none who are also as gifted of songwriters. There's actual music here instead of just fodder for guitar-nuts. Everyone should have this album.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative Guitar Rock Album.......2006-09-29

Joe Satriani is unquestionably one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. He influenced as many guitarists as he was influenced by, and manages to set the standard for creativity and technical prowess in the world of instrumental guitar rock. When this album was released back in '87, it was unique and unlike anything else being played at the time. Sure, guitar-shredding was fairly popular, with technicians like Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinnie Moore receiving due credit in the world of neoclassical rock, but there was little variation between these artists and their lightning-speed scales, arpeggios and clasically inspired licks.

Joe Satriani managed to release an album which was fresh, powerful and varied. Instead of sticking to one approach for every song the way Yngwie or MacAlpine did, Joe wrote each song as an individual piece of music with its own vibe, message and unique quality. He shows a great deal of restraint, tying his songs together with strong, well-constructed melodies and riffs that can be soloed over or improvised on to create a fluid, progressive piece of music. Every song on this album is a winner, and what makes them work so well together is their differences of style but consistency of quality. No track is alike or could be mistaken for another, but they are all incredible in their own way.

1) Surfing With the Alien - Awesome track that's all over the place. It features some of the album's flashiest playing, with especially exciting tapping and bluesy riffs. It isn't the absolute greatest song on here, but it makes for a fine introductory piece of what's to come. (8/10)

2) Ice 9 - A funky, infectious song with lead guitar playing somewhat reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, only more futuristic-sounding. As with much of his material, Satch starts out slow and builds up to balls-out shredding. Satch loves to experiment with a variety of guitar tones and sounds, and this song is the perfect showcase for his creative abilities. (8.5/10)

3) Crushing Day - This could be my favorite song on the album, and is definitely one of my favorite Satriani songs of all time. The main melody/lead riff in this song is simply perfect. It's emotional yet driving, and filled with energy that only Satch could deliver. The song also features some awesome soloing and great rhythm guitar. Satriani's tone sounds simply amazing here. (9.5/10)

4) Always With Me, Always With You - Here is another excellent, trademark Satriani song which has become a favorite among listeners, including myself. It's more subdued than some of the faster songs on here, and features a "brown sound" lead guitar tone comparable to Van Halen, soloing with lush melodies over a clean rhythm section. The overall feel of it is warm, passionate and electrifying. (9.5/10)

5) Satch Boogie - This isn't my favorite song on the album, but it's still quite cool. It's very energetic and filled with rapid-fire blues bends and artificial harmonics. The rhythm section, as the title suggests, is pure boogie blues. The way Satch soloes over the rhythm section is what makes this song appealing--he uses finger-tapping, neoclasiscal sounding scales and phrasing, along with straight ahead blues-rock to give the song a sense of immediacy and impulsivity. It's a fast, ruthless song which fits in well with the collection. (8/10)

6) Hill of the Skull - Here is the album's first most unique song, and also one of its two shortest. Clocking in at under 2 minutes, the song is a brief foray into brooding, atmospheric territory. It actually would have been cool if the song were more progressive and lengthier, but it works well as a miniature experiment, all the same. It features some of the most heartfelt, classically influenced melodies on the album, but still manages to sound incredibly original. No shredding here, just slow, dirging guitar melody and a similarly grave rhythm section. (8.5/10)

7) Circles - A cool, laid back rhythm intro erupts into pounding, distorted riffs and frenzied lead guitar work. Joe Satriani's lead guitar tone sounds in fine form here. The song switches back to the mellow vibe that it started out with. (8.5/10)

8) Lords of Karma - Kind of a strange, mysterious song which sounds deliciously 80's, but has that trademark space-age Satriani sound to it which is present through this album. Here is a great example of why Satriani was so ahead of his time with this album--there is no other song or artist that I can think of to compare this particular song to. Even the name is original. The soloing is, of course, pretty similar to other shred-fare seen during the 80's, only slightly more fluid and progressive. Satriani knows what he's doing. (9/10)

9) Midnight - The shortest track on the album, this song starts out a bit like Eddie Van Halen's Spanish Fly. The clean tapping sounds amazingly smooth and bell-like. After the Spanish Fly reminiscent intro, the song gets slightly more brooding with the addition of keyboard and rhythm section. It returns to the classical-sounding guitar tapping. Awesome little track. (8.5/10)

10) Echo - As the album's closer, this one is expected to be great, which it is. It's one of the album's highlights, and manages to incorporate just about every element which makes Satriani's playing excellent. It's more serious and contemplative than something like the title track of Satch Boogie, but is still a showcase for Joe's technical abilities. It's the album's longest song, and the most progressive, giving a real sense of journey and evolution over the course of 5 and a half minutes. As expected, it sounds fresh and futuristic, combining simple elements in an unusual and amazingly skilled manner to produce a completely original work. (9.5/10)

This is a must-have album, and despite its short length, is still one of the best values for anyone willing to spend money on a cd these days. In 37 minutes, Joe covers more ground than most guitarists cover in their entire careers. The album has been around for 20 years and it doesn't sound a bit dated.

5 out of 5 stars Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31

Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.

Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.

Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12

Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24

The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.

A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.

5 out of 5 stars one for the fans.......2004-05-07

This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2004-02-23

This is a great CD. Just listing to it makes me feel like I'm watching the show.

4 out of 5 stars solid and consistent album .......2007-02-15

The Good
" Bad Morning" is a driving anthem for those that can't stand hearing the morning alarm go off. You can't ignore the pounding drums and catchy chorus of "Forgive and Forget." "Around the Block" has infectious riffs and a fetching cowbell beat. That's right, cowbell. Vocalist Dryden Mitchell's chorus section is melodic and hook laden. "San Sebastian" uses muted riffs and blazing guitar licks to draw you in. Meaty riffs and a simple yet effective hook dominate "Getting Closer." Mitchell displays his best vocal performance here as he delivers with lots of heart and emotion. Acoustic, country style guitars with a modern rock twist help lead "Crickets." "State of Emergency" is loaded with thunderous drum beats and fiery guitar runs. "She's Only Evil" is a moving ballad about the negative aspects of a sour relationship. It either has a bombastic ending, or there's a bonus instrumental stuck in there.

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
Alien Ant Farm deliver a solid and consistent album with Up in the Attic. Their only obstacle is an industry that uses and disposes of bands like them.

5 out of 5 stars verry nice third album by AAF.......2007-01-16

Just a rockin album with a great variaty of songs

5 out of 5 stars Impressed.......2006-11-11

I came across a copy of ANThology while over in Iraq, and bought Up In The Attic when I got back a couple of weeks ago. I had never heard of them before, and have to admit that the energy of their style really grabbed me. I even bought a copy to give as a gift. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars AAF is back, and doing it right!.......2006-09-05

AAF first came on the scene in 2001 with the hit single "Smooth Criminal" which was a cover of the Michael Jackson song of the same name. In 2003 they released a second album called truANT. This album didn't do well at all and caused AAF to be dropped by their record company. Now they are back and have released their 3rd album (4th if you count their independent album) and its truly some good rock music. As opposed to truANT, AAF took their original style and used it in this album. This is a must-have if you liked ANThology or want to just hear some good rock music.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Contradiction.......2006-08-27

Alien Ant Farm are an extraordinarily interesting band, for various reasons. First of all, they made it big in the late 90's/ early two thousands by covering a somewhat obscure Michael Jackson song (they did a very great job of it, I might add.) They came up together with friends and then labelmates Papa Roach, and had minor parallel runs of success. While some remember Alien Antfarm as a musical footnote, a novelty act if you will, people that actually listened to their major label debut "ANThology" knew that there was more to this band than bizarre covers. The bizarre actions of eccentric frontman Dryden Mitchell may have had something to do with the bands stagnancy; he was distant, talked in strange voices, and just acted like an all-around nerd in both television and magazine interviews. After a bus accident looked like it would end AAF's short career, Dryden and Co. persevered to release a sophomore album, "truANT" for Dreamworks a few years after "ANThology" broke. While more of an artistic triumph, the second album thrust the band further into obscurity (despite the memorable video for "These Days" which featured the band crashing the Hip Hop Source Awards and playing on top of a building.) Just when I thought they were done for, I saw that they had released this, their third album, "Up In The Attic" (after their new album "Third Draft" failed to see the light of day due to conflicts with Geffen.) The album basically continues in the vein of "TRUant", with splashes of salsa, funk, and SoCal punk playing over their alternative hard rock backbone. The interesting thing about this band is that they seem to be unsure as to whether they want to be a successful commercial act, or a bizarre, artistically satisfying, ne'er understood college rock band. They have the skills to do both, but just when they are heading in one direction, they take a U-turn and go the other way. For example, on "It Could Happen", Dryden sings like a maniac, delivering an unbelievable vocal performance over dizzying guitar playing. However, the lyrics are downright awful; but this is bizarre because some of the songs feature outstanding lyrics but pedestrian musicianship. Alien Ant Farm have all the tools to make it: unbelievably catchy hooks, Monstrous choruses, outstanding musicianship, and a bizarre, charismatic frontman. They just have to make a choice. Overall, I would recommend this cd to fans of the last two, but offer that it won't win the band any new fans either.

Rock bastardizations of classical music are as old as Kim Fowley's--and ELP's--Tchaikovsky tweaking "Nutrocker." But classical interpretations of rock music have generally been something of a high-wire act. While most pop fare has strong melodic foundations for the soloist to build from, Christopher O'Riley has challenged himself here with the catalog of Radiohead, one of modern rock's most acclaimed--and texturally complex--bands. O'Riley's insightful gifts for interpretation (which have previously enlightened everything from Stravinsky to P.D.Q. Bach) produce a hypnotic, emotionally compelling listening experience here; O'Riley is a huge Radiohead fan, and that love courses through everything from the dreamy, bittersweet title track through the brooding loveliness of "Let Down." Radiohead's stock in trade is dense, multi-layered music that leans heavily on electronic processing for its moody sonic atmospherics; O'Riley's evokes those complex textures with but a judicious use of the sustain peddles, a deft use of dissonance (as on "Knives Out"), and a rhythmically anxious left hand. Call them etudes for the post-modern age if you will, but O'Riley's performances here largely achieve what all great interpretations strive for: New insight and enlightenment. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Looking Forward, Looking Back.......2007-03-02

Ove the last decade or so, Radiohead has created some of the most complex and futuristic rock music out there, and I wondered if a solo pianist could really capture their essence on a single instrument. However, O'Riley does a marvelous job, and brilliantly conveys the melancholy, mysterious, and introspective qualities of Radiohead's music. His renditions of "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Let Down" are particularly powerful. What I really loved about this cd is while I could follow all of the songs he played, at times I felt like I was listening to an breathtaking piano sonata by Mozart or Beethoven, and even a Nocturne by Chopin. Overall, this is a faithful interpretation by an excellent musician who honors one of the greatest bands in recent times, while also paying hommage to his musical heritage. This cd is a must for even the casual Radiohead fan or anyone who enjoys the piano.

4 out of 5 stars Music Lovers.......2007-02-17

i love almost all kinds of music. piano and radiohead really works for me, i liked the whole thing. if you can get into some piano, you can get into this cd. if you dig radiohead, get into it purely because someone took the time to put some awesome songs into yet another form for more audiences to get into. its beautiful. thats all there is to say.

5 out of 5 stars a transcription worthy of Franz Liszt.......2006-12-08

This is a beautiful recording. Try playing it for music loving frends who would never listen to a band like Radiohead. They won't believe it when you tell them the source of this richly textured heartbreakingly melodic tour de force. I'm in my late 50's and love Mahler, Sibelius, and Beethoven. I also love Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, John Fahey and Wilco. Good music can come along in any time and I'm glad that Christopher O'Riley loves Radiohead and transcribed it for solo piano; he's missed nothing in the process. If your not choked-up by the end of this CD, music must not be your thing.

3 out of 5 stars Sleepytime music.......2006-03-27

Being the total Radiohead fanatic that I am, I decided to pick this up when it came out... perhaps a fresh take on their music would breath some life back into the songs I've been listening into the ground, I thought. So I took it up into the mountains with me and listened to it for a bit. My reaction to it now is similar to then: it's a dreamy if somewhat insubstantial collection of vaguely familiar tunes.

All of the playing on this disc is superb on the technical level... obviously O'riley is a top notch classical performer. The arrangements are a mixed bag, though. There are some amazing renditions on here - see the impressionistic 'Everything In Its Right Place' and the melancholy coffee house arrangement of 'Knives Out'. Some others are also quite listenable, including 'Subterranean Homesick Alien', 'Exit Music', 'Bulletproof', and 'Motion Picture Soundtrack'. However, the upbeat pop tunes have difficult translating to solo piano. the Pablo Honey tunes suffer the worst here, and feel slightly unnatural; perhaps like a classical pianist paying tribute to a favorite band, rather than the more personal adaptations that make the 'Knives Out' arrangement so effective.

Overall, a nice cd to put on in the background when you're reading or settling in to bed, but Radiohead fanatics beware - don't expect anything that lives up to the band's immense standards.

5 out of 5 stars Nice sound.......2006-02-17

I didn't even know Radiohead songs...but now I've listened to the originals and can hear how O'Riley captures the songs on the piano. This is a great album.

Yerba Buena draws upon salsa, Cuban son, jazz, Latin rock, hip-hop, Afro-beat, and club culture to skillfully weave its hip, sexy and infectious dance floor grooves. Led by Venezuelan immigrant Andres Levin (the principal producer of the Red Hot + Riot Fela tribute) with other members from Cuba, New York City and St. Thomas, this multi-cultural combo's debut covers all the bases: fantastic production, skilled rappers, diva-like vocals and an endless multi-ethnic groove that erases all rhythmic boundaries. Tailor-made for hot summer nights of dancing, the poppy "Guajira (I Love U 2 Much)" opens the album with a catchy sing-along chorus sung in English. The band then follows with the manic Nuyorican boogaloo of "Tu Casa, Mi Casa." Yerba Buena is no less compelling when the band cranks up the Afro-beat-style choruses on songs like "Rompe El Cuero," which hit with the visceral impact of a Mack truck. A fully formed and promising debut, President Alien is as imaginative as it is addictive. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Buy it.......2007-04-09

I just wrote a review for Habib Koite's Foly live album where I said I'd listened to that as much as anything in the last 2 years, then I thought about this CD. This would be the competition. This CD is one of the best CDs I've every heard. It's what others say, just a brilliant mix of styles in the songs. The studio production is fantastic. I heard new little elements every time I listen to it. The grooves are completely infectious, the songs great and the musicianship just off the scale.
I first heard them live before hearing the CD and they were as good a live band as I've ever seen and I live for live music. Buy this CD and go hear them live. I'm much less crazy about the 2nd CD, Island Life. As one review said, it's like they're channeling their inner Kid Creole and the Coconuts...it's just too cute and poppy for me most of the time.
This CD manages to be pop without dumbing down or oversweeting the music.

Just buy it, particularly at the prices they have used.

4 out of 5 stars WOW! - YERBA BUENA Really good.......2004-09-09

Thumbs up for the Yerba Buena Team, this CD (my first one) is GOOD, excelent mix of rhythms afro, caribbean and hi-hop all at once, well done. Love the mix of the traditional with the modern that still can be enjoyable and danceable. I think Yerba Buena, could take more advantage of Xiomara's really nice voice and make the instruments arrangement more "contagious" that what the disc really is, and, please do not undestand me - the CD is REALLY GOOD - is just a way of thinking. Going for more Yerba Buena...

5 out of 5 stars One hot album.......2004-03-12

Wow! That is all I could say after listening to this album for the first time. I first heard Yerba Buena on the Orlando Jones show when they performed "Guajira (I Love U 2 Much)" I dont normally buy CDs but I liked that song so much I went ahead and ordered it. Turns out, the song that made me buy the album is one of the weakest on the album. With sweet latin sounds, this album just makes you want to shake your hips. Buy this album! You wont be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Fun & Infectious.......2003-12-26

This album is great! Every song is enjoyable. The beats are fun and make you want to dance. A great CD for keeping yourself entertained on long car rides or on the way to the clubs. A great mix of many influences which smack of infectious Latin-Afro flavor. Beware if you don't have tinted windows in your car- this CD can make you look like an idiot to other drivers because it will make you dance and belt out the songs in your seat!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is what Choir and Organ magazine had to say.......2002-12-08

A perfect portal into the sound world of medieval Russia, this selection of liturgical material, drawn from a tradition harking back to the 11th century, includes unadorned monophonic chant as well as ceremonial pieces in polyphonic styles developed in the 16th and 17th centuries, the sonorities of the former occasionally creating enjoyably spooky, ringing overtones in the generous acoustic. The men of Deisus sing with an almost visceral depth of commitment and, as might be expected, the low basses are profoundly in a class of their own.

5 out of 5 stars The best Russian choral CD of the season.......2002-02-09

This disk is a must for every lover of male Russian choirs! Don't get confused by the name of the choir (I assume it is based on Greek deisis `prayer') or the commercial design of the booklet: this is simply the very best of Russian choral chant that has been published this season. The fourteen singers of the choir perform ancient chants, that have partly been deciphered here for the first time, and so are absolutely unique. Because of the high quality of singing and the choice of repertoire, Deisus can be compared with leading choirs such as the famous Patriarchate Choir of Mr.Grindenko. The chants performed on this splendid disk, all in honour of the Virgin Mary, are either homophonic or polyphonic, in a pleasant alternation. They share the quality of monastic austerity that makes them absolutely captivating: the listener is transposed to another world, a world of quiet and piece. Warmly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing Recording!.......2002-02-05

Anyone who hasn't heard Russian chants performed by deep voices has a real delight ahead and a profound musical experience. This recording captivates from beginning to end. The voices of the Deisus Choir, singing heretofore unpublished chants, took this listener onto a soundscape he didn't know existed. The choir emerges like the breath of God and rolls on in a vibrant acoustic that's perfectly suited to the voices, which resonate as much in the solar plexus as in the ear. I've collected a good number of recordings of chants (including the best-selling disc of the Spanish monks that came out some years ago), but the present recording by the Deisus Choir is now at the top of my list.

Guided By Voices, the mascots of antihero rock and four-track hackery, chart another couple afternoons in their basement on Alien Lanes. It's the band's ninth album and second since being unearthed from the rich Ohio clay a year or two ago.

So now that lead voice Robert Pollard and buddies have quit their day jobs and late-bloomed into one of today's more successful indie rock institutions, what does the band's insistence on maintaining their signature muddy humming home recordings signify when they could obviously afford better studio-quality sound? Two possibilities. One: In order to continue delivering the stuff they have built a name on, Guided by Voices have descended from stardom to self-parody quicker than any band since the Doors. Or two: Do-it-yourself is not a romanticized economic necessity, but rather a conscious artistic choice--and hence reducible to merely this year's fad.

Either way, Alien Lanes finds Guided by Voices in the frustrating position of a new-aesthetic Moses: They can lead us to the low-fi Promised Land but can't enter with us. Or in other words, the band is like a mass-marketed "homemade" cookie: a well-intentioned contradiction that has nevertheless outgrown its usefulness.

But for everyone who still loves the music, there's a third possibility: Maybe the tape recorder is neither utility nor gimmick, but rather an irreplaceable piece of the band--even more so than any instrument or musician. That makes Alien Lanes simply a better-distributed chapter in the band's inimitable recast of classic psychedelic rock as sloppy postpunk; another collage with dozens of irresistibly cryptic song snippets shifting speeds and colors and not stopping (except for a disturbing homosexual slur half way through) until the last Beatlesque "all right" twenty-eight songs from go. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars Quirky and flawless.......2007-07-03

In the post-classic era, rock records are not supposed to be this good and bands aren't supposed to follow their definitive statement (in this case, 1994's Bee Thousand) with a record that is arguably even better, but with Alien Lanes, GBV does just that.

For newcomers, Alien Lanes is probably a bit more accessable than Bee Thousand--28 slices of warped pop/rock genius, all flying by in less than an hour. It would come off as a gimmick if the songs weren't so doggone great. From opener "A Salty Salute" with its shoutout to the "new drunk drivers," through "Game of Pricks" (arguably the finest 1:37 in Robert Pollard's canon) to more should've been classics like "Motor Away," "My Valuable Hunting Knife," "Blimps Go 90," and "My Son Cool" to name just a handful, Pollard is on an absolute roll, cranking out perfect pop concoctions that rarely last more than two minutes but never fail to impress. Its like he created a Pandora radio station of cool that just keeps tossing out incredible songs. Even his more tossed-off experiments work better than usual.

Still, Pollard comes close to doing the above roughly three times a year. What makes this arguably the finest GBV release of them all is the fact that secondary songwriter Tobin Sprout is also at the top of his game and his (slightly) more conventional songs provide a nice break from Pollard's more experimental bent. "Little Whirl" and "A Good Flying Bird" are as fine as any songs he ever contributed to a GBV record.

In the end, over a dozen years since its release, Alien Lanes still sounds fresh and delivers the goods just about every darn time. It is a modern classic in every possible way.

5 out of 5 stars My first, and greatest GBV experiance!.......2006-11-07

I first bought Alien Lanes in 2002, shortly before the release of Universal Truths and Cycles. I had heard about Guided By Voices on the internet and I decided to take a chance. Everyone who was already a fan of the band told me to start with Bee Thousand or Alien Lanes, so when I saw that this album had 28(!!) songs I had to choose it over Bee Thousand. I was instantly blown away when I heard the record, it was so different from what I had been listening to or expecting (Modest Mouse, Pixies).
Today I own over 20 Robert Pollard/GBV records and I must admit that Alien Lanes is still my favorite and STILL one of my most played albums as of 2006. While it may not be for everyone, anyone with the slightest interest in 60's style pop, punk, or 90's indie rock should own this album. It's a shame that the indie world doesn't rank this album (and at least 4 other GBV records) alongside Doolittle or Slanted and Enchanted as the crowning achivement of the indie revolution. Listening to some of today's most impressive indie-pop bands (The New Pornographers, The Shins, Sunday Runners, Tapes'n'Tapes) shows obvious GBV influence.

5 out of 5 stars towering giant of indie.......2006-07-23

if you claim to like indie, then you must have this record. it is really that simple. everything that made guided by voices great is here. this and bee thousand represent the co-pinnacles of GbV's carrer. this could be their "best of" album. they really didn't need to release one of those, alien lanes already exists. my valuable hunting knife, game of pricks, motor away, watch me jumpstart, as we go up we go down, blimps go 90 and on and on and on.

perhaps the best record from the best band of our generation.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest album ever.......2006-06-21

That's it. There's no better album than this. I recommend you get it.

5 out of 5 stars You WILL Get Hooked............2006-06-02

Jesus, what a glorious mess this disk is. Side by side with some of the most ridiculous crap I've ever heard in my life are some of the most interesting and creative melodies I've heard in some time. Either these guys are completely incapable of editing themselves, or they simply don't care to. "Alien Lanes" makes it very obvious that the members of GBV, particularly head honcho Robert Pollard, does not discriminate among his various creations. That means that discerning listeners must do the job for themselves, but in my opinion, it's ultimately worth the trouble. For every ridiculous waste of my time like "Big Chief Chinese Restaurant" or "Ex- Supermodel", which features somebody making loud snoring noises throughout the track, there are that many more snippets of inspiring genius. "Game of Pricks," "My Valuable Hunting Knife" and "Motor Away" each deserve to be featured on your local `hit' radio station, or better yet, cleaned up and covered by a famous band that could only wish to write something so clever and catchy. Since Pink Floyd are incapable of generating fresh new material, why not cover "Always Crush Me"?
"Alien Lanes" actually shows the band trying a bit harder than usual to retain some semblance of sonic clarity, even stretching out to sparingly include some slide guitar and violin. Look, the CD has twenty-eight tracks on it. 28!!! Yes, a good percentage of them can be dismissed, but even if half of them are extraneous, that still leaves fourteen that are thoroughly worthwhile. I wish that they would spend a bit more effort focusing on what makes their best stuff so good and eliminate the chaff, but then again, maybe sorting through their output is half of the fun. I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

I probably can think of about 30 albums that are great from start to finish in my 35 or so years seriously listening to music. This is one of them.

I bought it for In The Meantime, but found that I really enjoyed playing the entire album more than just listening to that song on replay. The songs tell a story and fit together so well.

1 out of 5 stars Don't judge an album by its single........2006-03-04

In the Meantime was a big hit and I thought it was a great song. I bought this album for that song. I listened to it several times but each time the rest of the music got worse and worse. This is the only album I have ever given away. It is awful. DO NOT BUY THIS RECORD. If you like the single then buy the single. This band should not be encouraged.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-12-29

I bought this albumn about 9 years ago, because a sample (the telephone) was used on a TV ad (unsurprisingly for a telco - One-2-One I think). Obviously "In the meantime" was brilliant, and the rest of the albumn was pretty good.

About a week ago, though, I picked it up again, and it hasn't been off the CD player since. Fantastic. It always played glam rock at its own game, and Royston has those wonderful take-the-piss-out-of-Axl-Rose vocals; but now I can see - the band did The Darkness, before the Darkness had seen the light of day. The tunes are fun, and skillfully played. The lyrics ingenious in their playfullness. And Shipwrecked is a ballad to break your heart, then trample all over the scattered remains with the hobnail boots of feedback enhanced rock guitar.

This is brilliant; go and buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Off the beaten path.......2004-05-06

I first learned about Spacehog through the news. The singer, Royston Langdon (aka "The Luckiest Man Alive") married Liv "Arwen Evenstar" Tyler in 2001. This made headlines at the time, as it was incontrovertible proof that even the homeliest of guys can hit the jackpot every now and then.

Three things strike me about this album:

First, is it quirky? Yep. Off the beaten path? Definitely. But underneath this somewhat bizarre album is a collection of strong and well crafted songs written by people who are quite talented songsmiths.

Secondly, they're very well produced. They have a great sound, and whoever the producer is deserves an award. The band's strengths are played up. The mix is just right. The sound they get out of their instruments is simply phenomenal. It's perfect for their style of music.

Thirdly, the singer, Royston Langdon, has a strangly intriguing voice. I'm not sure it would carry well in a more traditional band, but it's perfect for what Spacehog does.

3 out of 5 stars Pigs in spaaaaaaace........2004-04-04

Though I'm sure they're mostly thought of as a one-hit-wonder, man what a hit. "In The Meantime" has got to be one of the coolest songs of the mid-90's. After that the songs aren't as good, but still similar, and mostly interesting. Actually I think "Cruel To Be Kind" was a minor hit as well. Their sound is definitely retro-glam, like a "David Bowie" or "Elton John" influenced 90's alt-rock band. By now this disc is probably in every used store across the country, and well worth the price you could get it for. After a few listens, you'll realize "Space Is The Place".
