5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars I finally get it.......2006-01-03

This CD took its time revealing its charms to me. The use of a kind of omnipresent 3-part triadic harmony felt at the same time too rich and not rich enough. And which side of the Ornette fence does it stand on? Or does it sit on it? Well, these are the dangers of an overly canonical, overly historical approach to Jazz. If Booker would've lived past the age of 23, all would've surely been made clear. This is a very young man's record. And yet, it is the music of one who must have intuited that his time wasn't long. The playing and writing are brilliant, passionate and focused. The dirge - like qualities of Moods In Free Time are what finally woke me up to what's going on in this music. I myself would not have gone back to an ensemble part which resembles the opening at the end - that feels like the easy choice. But that's a minor cavil.
Booker's playing is so assured and lyrical. I love the way he attacks high notes. They don't seem to have the climactic function they have for so many trumpeters - they seem more like an element of design. His solos go very well next to some of composer Stefan Wolpe's music for trumpet. I also feel a link to some of Andrew Hill's music, especially Point of Departure. Not enough has been written about some music of the early - '60's which availed itself of some of the innovations of Free Jazz while continuing to make a music extremely linked to a set harmonic scheme. This is a classic of that music.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Pick.......2005-11-27

If I had to pick a handful of jazz recordings to take to a desert island, this would certainly be one of them.

The conception, the originality, the arrangements, the choice of sidemen, the lyricism, the quality of the solos--it's all there.

Plus astounishing fidelity!

I had the original LP when it first came out in 1961. Though I hadn't heard it in many years, when it was reissued on CD, I bought it and have not stopped listened to it. It is like a reunion with one of your oldest and dearest friends whom you haven't seen in many years.

Even though Booker's life, like his colleague, Eric Dolphy, was tragically short, he demonstrated a genius and a maturity far beyond his years.

To me Booker Little is one of the elite trumpeters in jazz history and a beautiful person.

If you listen closely to the way he constructs his tunes, with short episodes, punctuated by contrasting choruses, you will recognize the considerable influence Booker's music had on Dave Douglas.

But as much as I admire and enjoy Dave Douglas, he is a mere mortal compared to the inspired Booker Little.

Get this album while it is still available. You won't regret it.

One final thought: Max Roach is truly unbelievable on this date!

5 out of 5 stars Just might be Booker's best.......2003-04-24

The tragically short lived Booker Little (died of kidney failure on October 5, 1961, at the age of 23) on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Eric Dolphy on alto sax, bass clarinet, and flute, Don Friedman on piano, Ron Carter plays bass on four tracks, while Art Davis supplies bass for the remaining three, Max Roach drums, and provides, tympani, and vibes.
Upbeat and sunny pieces alternate with slower and dreamier, even slightly melancholic tracks.
I've listened to this album almost more than any other jazz release I own, and I've yet to tire of it.
I was listening to "Man of Words" when I got the news that one of my oldest and best childhood friends had passed away, I can't imagine a more appropriate piece of music for such an experience.
Buy this today if you like jazz at all.

4 out of 5 stars Why has there no reissue of Booker Little's masterpiece?.......2001-04-23

Out Front is an important CD. But his best work is another recording under Time Records titled 'Booker Little' which is not readily available. I have been amazed and disappointed that there has been no reissue of one of the most important albums of the post-Parker, post-Clifford Brown era. This album which was Booker's first album as a leader was recorded on April 13, 1960, eleven days after his 21st birthday. It is an astoundingly beautiful recording using the highest quality multi-channel technology available at the time. It was part of the Series 2000 recordings issued by Time Records with liner notes by Nat Hentoff. It featured Tommy Flanagan, Scott La Faro, and Roy Haynes (with Wynton Kelly sitting in on one tune). If you are a fan of "Bee Tee" (his nickname since childhood), or if you just want to hear a profound trumpet album, having few equals, then you must somehow get this recording. Again, however, I am not sure this is possible since I know of no readily available reissue. I have owned this album since I was a teenager and I have played it over the years for fellow aficionados of the music. Everyone who has heard the work has confirmed this is a masterpiece; and during the 60s and 70s it attained legendary status among serious collectors. For those interested in the important work of Scott La Faro (Bill Evans bassist), this album is essential -- his work here is a virtual tour de force of acoustic bass. I hope other jazz collectors will join me in encouraging whoever owns and controls the Time tapes and catalog to reissue this great work. The album is exceptionally tight and harmonically interesting. Rarely have four musicians played so much in unison, with so much clarity and clean, inspired musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars Truly "Out Front".......2000-11-05

Booker Little's "Out Front" is truly one of the great early recordings of the New Jazz. Recorded over two sessions in the spring of 1961 for jazz writer and critic Nat Hentoff's Candid label, "Out Front" features some of the best jazz musicians of the day -- Eric Dolphy, Julian Priester, Ron Carter and Max Roach. (Additionally, Art Davis replaces Carter on three tracks and Don Friedman plays piano.) These are names that would become synonymous with the experimental jazz innovations of the 60s. Of the numerous factors that contribute to this being a classic album, Little's creative compositions and impeccable arrangements are the most remarkable. The combination of Dolphy, Little and Priester produced bright, energetic melodies that are hauntingly evocative. Unfortunately, Little would die in just a few short months. And it's tragically ironic that just as Little was shedding the inevitable Clifford Brown comparisons, Little too would die too young and too soon. "Out Front" gives us a glimpse at what could have been, yet thankfully it is a masterpiece in its own right to relish.

4 out of 5 stars D. Arthur.......2003-06-19

I own Byard's Out Front!, Here's Jaki, and Hi-Fly. Of these three albums, Out Front! has the best song selection and is the most diverse in terms of instruments. Booker Ervin's tenor sax is much more lyrical on Out Front! than on his Sapce Book and Freedom Book albums. Also, ... Jaki Byard fans will enjoy his playing tenor sax on "When Sunny Gets Blue". My favorite tracks on Out Front! are Out Front, European Episode and Lush Life. The liner notes are very extensive and meaningful to die hard jaki byard fans. If you like Jaki Byard, then your collection should include Out Front!

4 out of 5 stars Byard's "Out Front" A Better "Experience".......2001-06-08

Jaki Byard is a solid and eclectic bop pianist probably best remembered for his contributions to several classic Charles Mingus and Booker Ervin albums of the 60s. I have previously reviewed his 1968 OJC album, "The Jaki Byard Experience," but those curious about the pianist would be best served starting with this title, "Out Front," and here's why. The majority of this CD is taken from two sessions in May 1964, a time when Byard was truly hitting his stride, most notably on tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin's classic recordings, "The Freedom Book" and "The Space Book." In fact, Ervin and trumpeter Richard Williams play on half of "Out Front's" eight tunes, including two CD bonus tracks not on the original vinyl, "I Like To Lead When I Dance" and "After The Lights Go Down Low." The album's other four tracks are trio tunes, with Bob Cranshaw and Walter Perkins playing on three of them (they are also the rhythm section for the numbers with Ervin and Williams). The remaining track, "When Sunny Gets Blue," is from a March 1961 date featuring Ron Carter on bass, Roy Haynes on drums, and Jaki Byard on piano, and surprisingly on alto sax too! My reason for giving "Out Front" a better overall rating than "The Jaki Byard Experience" is that I believe "Out Front," despite its diverse feel, is a more cohesive and consistent album than "Experience," and I feel Ervin is a better fit for Byard's music than Roland Kirk, who is the saxophonist on "Experience." With that being said, my reason for withholding a fifth star here is that Ervin and Williams do not get enough chances to showcase their stuff and are often confined to playing the role of accompanist while Byard plays in the "out front" style. But "Out Front" is definitely worth looking into for fans of Mingus and Ervin, not to mention jazz piano enthusiasts. I personally thought the CD was worth purchasing for the ambitious suite "European Episode" alone. A final note, interested parties should also be aware that "Out Front" is a limited edition title, so it won't be "out front" for long.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful -- INDEED!.......2007-06-18

I am always thrilled when I happen upon gorgeous music by an unfamiliar artist. That happened one weekend in my Saturday yoga class, and I was so moved by the music (esp what I know now is Prayer Two on this album) I asked the instructor what he played during class. To give you some indication of the quality, esp of the cello pieces, I assumed it must be Yo-Yo-Ma doing a movie soundtrack. How happy I was to be fooled, and equally happy to recommend without hesitation, that you purchase this CD. You will not be disappointed, only relaxed and mesmerized beyond your wildest dreams!

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2006-07-15

Jami's music on this cd is the most beautiful, awe-inspiring music I have heard in a long time. I stumbled upon Jami's music on CDBaby.com. Just clicked on new age and since I am a big fan of the cello I took a chance and listened to her. Beautiful is all I could say. The melancholy way in which she writes and sings brings tears to the soul. She writes and plays from her heart which is a rare find these days. This is not your ordinary "New Age" cd of everything being played on a synth!! This is real music with real musicians and even of The Thai Elephant Orchestra itself!! The actual elephants play, talk about inspiring! If you love real musicians and beautiful music then PLEASE by all means give Jami Sieber a listen and you'll fall in love with her music and with her dedication to the elephants.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!.......2006-02-24

On a par with David Darling's Cello Blue. A definite must-hear for cello lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Tickles my fancy, pierces my soul.......2006-02-02

This album is one of my all time favorites. I have listened to it for months without ever getting bored of the deep sounds that emminate from Jami's electric cello. The mood is sometimes playful, sometimes surreal, and sometimes dark and mysterious, but always engaging. Most of the tracks are slow, sensual, and entrancing. One piece, performed with Rhiannon, is upbeat and ecstatic, but still quite sensual. Don't miss this great opportunity to embark on a journey with Jami and be transformed just as she was in the presence of the elephants.

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2005-05-16

Years ago I stumbled across Sieber's work and morphed asap into a staunch Sieberholic. Hidden Sky represents the third stroke of musical excellence. Thematical like Second Sight, equally enigmatic, softer, quieter, dipped in silence. If you're comfortable hanging between a half-note and the edge of the universe as your soul skin turns to sea, go for it - but BE FOREWARNED: It's alive.

    5 out of 5 stars a must-have for any music collection.......1999-12-01

I saw Jami Seiber play with Ferron last fall and Ferron had her play two songs off of this album during the show. It was so powerful and beautiful that I was actually brought to tears and I ran out and bought the album at the end of the show. Her playing will blow you away. She makes the cello express such a range of emotion and passion. The CD is great for relaxing, meditation, or just thinking in general. It definitely has been the best addition to my collection in years.

Incredible listening pleasure. I came across Jamie Sieber at a Ferron Concert at the Left Bank in Blue Hill, ME as she was backing her up and of all the CD's I bought that night, this is the one that has received the most play. Meditation to a relaxing evening to the end of a hectic day, this CD puts me into a lucid state. I want "The Goat's Earth" at my funeral don't bury me under forest trees...when I die please bury me under the shade tree...I want to hear the drum beat, I want to feel the dancer's feet. A must to any collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Cello Moods.......2000-03-29

I have played this CD relentlessly. It sates what I call my "cello moods" - when I somehow have to delve downward to bring an emotion to the surface. I never look at the titles, and somehow have been able to paint pictures for all the pieces. My favorite tracks, if I HAD to choose, are: 1,2, and 7...but, I like them all. I then repeat it; my friends hear the CD, fall in love with it, and learn they have cello moods, too.

5 out of 5 stars THIS is Cello.......1999-12-31

Lush Mechanique is an album that will have enduring appeal to listeners. The songs were written as a complete dance piece, so you will have the feeling of being taken on a marvelous journey through sounds (you will be very surprised to learn) that come entirely from Jami's electric cello (plus a bit of wordless vocals.) If I only had one cd that I could ever give to every person I met, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......1999-12-01

I bought this album after becoming enamored with Jami Seiber's "Second Sight" (which I also would highly recommend). Her cello playing is amazing. At times you forget you are actually listening to an instrument as it seems to take on a voice and feeling of its own. I love the drumming in the background on many of the tracks. It is very intense but quiet so it blends well with the cello but gives the music a sense of presence. I've found this to be great for when I'm trying to relax, read, think, or just have good conversation. It's definitely music to be experienced. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh and refreshing.......2007-06-13

Great songwriting and great singers. Fresh and refreshing. Who says they don't write 'em like this anymore!

4 out of 5 stars So much fun, I laughed out loud!.......2002-11-03

This album is filled with songs that were such fun, i found myself laughing out loud. This CD also has some great ballads featuring Susan Egan and Tami Tappan and others which truly sent shivers up my arm. If you are a big broadway fan, this album is for you. I really wish Tami Tappan would do an album of her own. Her voice is so lovely, every note she carries out with such perfection. Can't get enough of Tami Tappan!!!

5 out of 5 stars SHE WRITES GOOD!!.......2002-02-21

It's always a pleasure to hear Adryan Russ's material. I was familiar with her musical "Inside Out"--even made it my business to see it when it played off-Broadway in NYC. But this CD gave me a chance to sample from her diverse catalogue of songs. Some of my favorites: "I Want To Live This Love" (destined to be a pop sensation when the right artist finds it),"The Gift" (should be a Holiday classic), and the lovely "Matters Of The Heart." There's also some sensational performances on the CD. Karen Benjamin sings a poignant "Hopscotch," Sharon McKnight delivers a sensational "I Slip Into This Place" and Adryan herself (who has a wonderful voice) scores with "Number." I rate this CD as one of my best buys of the last year!!

      5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!.......2002-02-19

This is an extraordinary recording. Every song is top-notch. I was literally glued to my seat listening to every note and lyric until I had listened to the CD in it's entirety. It's rare that ANY recording can hold my attention like that. Susan Egan's poignant rendition of, "I Hate to See You Go" brought tears to me eyes. And at the same time, there are songs like, "Them" ,that made me laugh out loud. This is a great CD. The songs are great. The artists are great. (Adryan Russ actually sings a song herself. Her voice is GORGEOUS!) The arrangments are BEAUTIFUL. The world is definitely going to hear more of Adryan Russ. So, buy this CD while you can still get a copy!!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Everyone Has A Story.......2002-01-28

With unmistakably Broadway melodic lines, razor-sharp lyrics and wide-eyed performances by top cabaret stars like Sharon McNight and out Jason Graae, EVERYONE finally puts this gifted composer front and center. Russ, best known for her off-Broadway musical Inside Out, couldn't ask for a more convincing showcase. Thanks to the dedication of the participants - especially arranger Grant Geissman and producer Bruce Kimmel - what could have been a mixed bag is an embarrassment of riches. You'll hear shimmers of Menken, Hamlisch, and Shire, but more often, an original voice sings out.

You're probably thinking "Oh great - another guy playing a worn Stratocaster thinking he is Stevie Ray Vaughn". Wrong. What drew me to this CD was that the songs were fresh and fun and had no trace of the cliches that can make this music boring - and the playing and musicianship is outstanding.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome guitarist, but................2006-08-07

SAYCE may be one of the greatest new players waiting to be discovered. His playing is stupendous and rivals the very best ( BONAMASSA / GALES etc. ) of the young guns. JOE ROMAGNOLA from GROOVEYARD ( the producer of this cd ) stated that the guitar parts were recorded LIVE in the studio. Almost unbelievable considering the complexity of his playing and the tightness of the arrangements. However....., the songs are nothing more than vehicles for the guitar virtuosity and are juvenile at best. Lyrics......., best not go there either. After saying all that, it is still a must have for any guitar fan that likes to collect the greatest of the new players. This guy should figure largely in the future of guitar musik

      5 out of 5 stars unbelievable talent.......2006-07-21

and so deserving of wider recognition. he's on the road playing in Melissa Etheridge's band right now. . crank this LOUD. . . it is a really fun album
