Donnie Darko UK Import : BUY IT!!!.......2007-05-12
Just bought this 2 CD import item. Was it costly? Sure: approx. $25. BUT, given that I nearly paid $20 for the US version which DOES NOT include the first CD, it was well worth it.
Delivery: SURPRISINGLY SUPER-FAST by USPS (it only took two or three days standard shipping)
Condition: Still wrapped in plastic.
Music: *tee hee* If you watched the movie, then you know what the music will sound like: it's the movie soundtrack (you know, the awesome soundtrack that both reminds the viewer of the 80's and also creates a haunting backdrop for the movie's themes). Typically here in the US that means only one or two of the good songs and the rest is the score. The UK version? ALL of the good songs and the entire score (that's why it's 2 discs).
Bad part? Not offered in US retail stores (i.e. you can only buy this online or in an Import CD store.
Mad World - the one you are looking for.......2007-01-19
It's here, two versions of Mad World by Michael Andrews, lovely piano intro and Neil Young type vocals. Buy it!
It took 'em long enough, but it was worth the wait!.......2006-11-06
My friends and I have been waiting for this for years--finally, the real 80's music soundtrack for Donnie Darko, arguably one of the best soundtracks out there!
Probably the only negative comment I have is that they included the music from the motivational videos, something that I could have done without.
Thank you for putting this soundtrack out!!
Donhnie Darko Import Soundtrack well done.......2006-08-24
The import edition of the Donnie Darko soundtrack is two discs. One is the actual pop songs, and some classical works, which are all very good and includes the remake of Tears for Fears "Mad World." The second disc is the instrumental score, with two versions of "Mad World," included as well. The instrumental score is very dark and omenous, and the two disc set is a nice collectible piece of music that I highly reccommend. The price is a bit high, at over $30, but if you are any type of a fan of the movie, or a soundtrack collector, this album is for you.
good stuff.......2006-08-10
i wish i could have bought just disc one... because disc two is mostly the instrumental stuff, which is excellent, but i don't really plan on listening to it over and over. disc one is good, although there are a few songs i skip through.

Key word: narrative first, music second.......2004-12-09
I must admit when I first purchased this many years ago I was expecting solely Glass' music. I quickly found out there was mostly dialogue from the film with the music as a background (like the film obviously). I wasn't pleased because in the film you get the music as background and I was hoping to get the music as the main focus. However, it has grown on me and like the film, the dialogue, music, and sound effects blend so well that it works! I would urge people to see the film as well but regardless, listening to the dialogue and music is captivating even without the visuals. Look to other Glass titles if you want only music but if a unique and captivating blend of spoken word, storytelling AND Glass music appeals to you, this is good stuff!
"The kid scares me...".......2003-11-14
Be aware that this is not your typical soundtrack album, and those looking for Phillip Glass' isolated score will not find it here.
Rather, this is 30+ track disc that plays like an encapsulated version of the film for your ears. Nearly every single track has dialogue and sound effects from the film, with Glass' subtle, minimalistic, menacing and hopeful music all around.
The Thin Blue Line is far from your typical documentary, and the dramatization of some events and the use of music throughout are part of what separates it from the rest of the pack. The film is the true story of the murder of a Dallas police officer in 1976 and the rapid railroading of a 28 year-old drifter named Randall Adams through the court and onto Death Row.
The film helped overturn Adams' conviction in the late 1980s. The other main player in the case, lifelong criminal David Harris (just 16 at the time of the shooting) is interviewed throughout, and his chilling statements at the end were disturbing at the time the film appeared (since the 'truth' is finally revealed). Today Adams is free and Harris sits on Death Row for crimes other than those depicted in The Thin Blue Line.
You can actually listen to this whole disc without having seen the film, but you would be doing yourself a severe injustice. When you put faces to voices and see the reenactments and get a sense of the situation Adams was in, the whole picture opens up.
Unless you really hate soundtracks with heavy dialogue and sound bites from the film, this is a highly recommended disc for Glass fans and fans of the great film.
Great music, but stop yakking!.......1999-09-12
This is the only Glass CD I have that I don't listen to on a regular basis. This is the worst possible way to make a soundtrack album. The film is brilliant, the music is brilliant, but the album is like someone shortened the film down and laid down the entire audio track. I hate soundtracks like this and only give it as many stars as I do because of how much I like the music and film. Only the opening titlte is only music, and some tracks have no music at all. If this were reissued without the dialogue and sound FX, I would but it in a heartbeat and sell this one off. Morris's non-fiction films are too stylish to want to hear the dialogue without the visuals, and Glass's music is too good not to be able to hear it apart from the rest of the audio track. If the spoken word were done poetically like in _Einstein on the Beach_ or _Hydrogen Jukebox_, I would recommend it, but because it isn't, I can't.
A unique and engrossing mix of music and spoken word........1999-06-03
Mere words, like the unsupported testimony that convicted Randall Adams, are the focus of this soundtrack, but with a spare, understated score by Philip Glass lending a sense of gravity to the dialogue taken from the film. The result is that each remark, however insignificant on the surface, is made profound and meaningful. Listening to this work is like listening to an old radio drama, but without the artifice of a narrator telling us what to think. It is utterly compelling and truly demonstrates the power of the spoken word and the power of music.
dialogue.......1999-03-02
Just so you know: This CD consists almost entirely of dialogue from the movie, with Philip Glass's music in the background. If you don't go for that sort of thing, then don't buy it. For true Glass fans, though, it's worth it.

Album Description
In 1988 Philip Glass scored Errol Morris' extraordinary documentary film entitled "The Thin Blue Line". This film helped exonerate a man named Randall Adams who was serving a life sentence for the murder of a police officer that he didn't commit. It was also responsible for exposing the actual murderer. Mr. Morris' repetitive, obsessive storytelling style is perfectly supported by Philip Glass' hypnotic score and the overall effect is so engaging and irresistible, that it is impossible not to be drawn into this true-life drama.
That same year Nonesuch Records released a CD of the film's soundtrack that interestingly included the narration and interviews from the film and it tells the entire story. In continuing with Orange Mountain Music's mission to expose prime material from the Philip Glass archive of recordings, we have decided to release the original score without the voice-over so it can be experienced thoroughly. We have also included the extra material that was written and recorded for the film but was never used.
The Munkasci/Riesman team produced the original recordings and the ensemble includes strings, flutes, trumpets, French horns and percussion. The music is dark and moody, full of tension appropriately for such a chilling film. You can expect to be captivated by this masterful score.
Album Description
Orange Mountain Music reissue of the acclaimed composer's masterful score to the 1988 film (minus the voice-over that appears on the Nonesuch edition). Also includes extra material that was written & recorded for the film but was never used.
Customer Reviews:
THE THIN BLUE LINE soundtrack with music only is a quest fulfilled!.......2006-10-27
Finally, THE THIN BLUE LINE soundtrack by Philip Glass has been released with the beautiful music only (i.e. without the dialogue tracks). Those of you who have seen this gripping documentary by Errol Morris and enjoyed Philip Glass's hypnotic compositions probably bought the original CD release which included dialogue excerpts from the movie. You were probably disappointed because, although the dialogue version sends an important message about the ever-present risk of gross miscarriage of justice and the potential to send innocent men to death row, you were nonetheless deprived of enjoying this incredible, soul-stirring music. This is truly one of Philip Glass's best soundtracks along with KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI.
Now is your chance to buy this musical masterpiece without the distraction of dialogue. If you are like me, you might have yearned for a music-only release for years and years. Finally, your quest can be fulfilled!
P.S. To the "geniuses" in the soundtrack music industry,
Please do us all a huge favour by sparing us from any more soundtrack releases that have dialogue superimposed over the music (CASABLANCA, BLADE RUNNER, MORE MUSIC FROM TITANIC, MORE MUSIC FROM GLADIATOR, etc.)! If we wanted to hear the dialogue, we would either just watch the movie or burn a copy of the dialogue onto a CD by ourselves. So do us all a favour and open those music vaults to release complete soundtracks in their entirety without cheating with dialogue tracks! Thank you.
THANK GOODNESS--the music w/o the words.......2006-07-09
I was enthralled by the soundrack of "The Thin Blue Line." The movie was also interesting, but the music was memorable. There was something so captivating about the track itself wihtout regards to the content. Usually I associate a soundtrack with the images of the movie. (Like in Nothing But Trouble, I always see the scene with Chevy Chase going down the conveyor belt when I hear Bone Crusher.)
I eagerly went out and purchased the soundtrack to the movie, and was quite disappointed because it was the movie w/o the picture. All the dialog was on the disc (WHY????) So thank goodness someone reworked the score using a symphonic orchestra. They were very close to the original, but some of the instrument choices were a bit "generic," that's why I could only give it 4 stars. A verbatim track from the movie w/o any dialog as a TOTALLY original Philip Glass score would be a 5 star deal, all the way.
PS--w/o means "without." Sorry for the shorthand.
Worth buying as complement to the old CD issue.......2005-10-15
I own a copy of the old CD issue (including film monologs), but was pleasantly surprised by the release of this re-issue. This release strips the spoken word from the soundtrack to reveal the true beauty of the music. The effect is remarkable! Of course, this is also partly due to the vastly improved sound quality of the recording. As an added bonus, there're also tracks included that didn't make it to the final soundtrack of the film (and therefore were not included on the previous CD). This release complements the old one in various ways and makes it very worthwhile.
Off the Beaten Path!!.......2004-01-19
As with most of Philip Glass's soundtrack's the music to The Thin Blue Line is amazing (in a suprisingly subtle way). So why in the world was this soundtrack released in 1989 with DIALOGUE ON TOP OF IT?! What's more, to the dismay of all of us diehards', the dialogue was quite out front, with the music off in the background. What were they thinking?
Well, I can't complain anymore - and I'll gladly stop. This soundtrack - without any dialogue, thank you - is available for our enjoyment and it has been making regular rounds on my CD player ever since. For those whove not heard the soundtrack before, but have some familiarity with Glass, this music probably sounds most (loosely) akin to "Dancepieces". The instrumentation is sparse, the pieces are inventive while maintaining an openness and accessibility, and the chord changes have a tendency to give you chills (well, they do to me anyway).
There are plenty of highlights: really the first five tracks are all brilliant (the third being rearranged as Glass's solo piano piece 'metamorphisis 1'). I also really liked tracks 9, 10 and 11 (which are all extremely short peices exploiting the same chordal theme). Also, track 19 (a longer peice for strings that I don't think made it into the film or the other soundtrack) has a calm but mighty sound that I've only heard Glass be able to pull off.
There are, to be sure, a few...well...bizarre tracks that almost sound more like a Michael Nyman experiment than something Glass would do. Two tracks use jazz brushes on a snare, playing a soft swing underneath strings that are playing in straight syncopation. A mismatch, in my opinion. Another two tracks (one of them track 20 - the 'hidden' track) use a surf-sounding guitar and a peppy - almost poppy - feel akin to Michael Nyman. Besides that, track 20 uses more studio effects than I've ever heard Philip Glass use. Very bizarre indeed (but you may well like it, and at any rate, it is very different)!!
Long and short, this album is a gem, even if some of the tracks are a bit eclectic. Glass is to be commended for creating a soundtrack that is a.) this compelling, b.) this diverse from track to track, and c.) simply put, this beautiful!
Very Haunting Film and Score.......2003-11-25
Several years ago I watched the film The Thin Blue Line. The film is stylistically terrific, haunting, and twisted. I loved it AND the music. I wanted the soundtrack, but it included the dialogue from the film (I nevertheless bought the soundtrack). Now Orange Mountain Music has released the soundtrack without the dialogue. Once again, Glass has created a masterful score. The music is appropriate as a filmscore, or it can stand on its own. The music is haunting, wonderful, beautiful. I can't praise this album enough. Buy this one!
