So how does Chris Tomlin follow up his 2006 Artist and Male Vocalist of the Year Dove Awards? Easy... he goes out and releases his best work to date with See the Morning, a superb collection of worship-flavored tracks that demonstrate Tomlin continues refining his art. As with the previous Arriving, producer Ed Cash is firmly at the helm and masterfully blending Tomlin's smooth vocals and his band's chiming guitars and rock-steady rhythm. The extensive road work that Tomlin and his band have done certainly shows in how tight See the Morning sounds. In fact, tracks like "Glorious" and "Awesome Is the Lord Most High" may even lose a little luster compared with how they sound live on Passion: Everything Glorious. No matter, as this release is much more about songwriting than it is about energy. For Tomlin, verse and chorus have never flowed smoother and sweeter than on "Glory in the Highest" and "How Can I Keep from Singing?" and first single "Made to Worship." Tomlin also offers a nice cover of Brenton Brown's "Everlasting God," slightly slower than Lincoln Brewster's fiery version on Let the Praises Ring but equally rewarding. Further highlights include the atmospheric "Uncreated One" and a new and pleasing twist on the classic "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)." Start to finish, See the Morning is Tomlin's most complete release and a strong argument for calling him one of this generation's finest songwriters in the modern church. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-07-05

A CD I have had for a while now and still play it often. Highly recommend - the words are great!

5 out of 5 stars pure worship.......2007-06-30

How many times have you ever bought a cd where you could say every song was fantastic? When you put this on be ready to worship, because your spirit will be crying out to honor the Lord will all that is in you. I can listen to this cd over and over and over....I bet you will too.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-05-28

One of the best CD's I've purchased in a long time. I love listening to it...it's very inspiring and calming.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Worship Album.......2007-05-21

"See The Morning" is the first Chris Tomlin album that I've ever purchased. He gained my interest with the release of "Made To Worship" and "How Can I Keep From Singing." "How Can I Keep From Singing" opens this album with an almost doorbell-like chime, awakening the listener and drawing them into the rest of the album and preparing them for some wonderful worship tunes. "Made To Worship" will easily flow from your lips after just a couple of listenings. The next tune, "Let God Arise," is my personal favorite. It has a driving beat behind it that proclaims "our God reigns." The rest of the album is just as good, and I'd be fibbing if I told you that any one of the other songs doesn't deserve to be played on the radio. "Uncreated One," "Glorious" and "Let Your Mercy Rain" are just a few of the highlights from the rest of the album.

Tomlin and his band sound tight and blend together wonderfully. For those unfamiliar with his sound, I'd say that Tomlin is something of a cross between Steven Curtis Chapman's musical stylings and Wes King's softspoken vocals. If you enjoy either of these artists or light pop and rock in general, Tomlin should be right up your alley.

I highly recommend this album to anyone in need of a worship boost. This album will get you singing and praising in no time flat.

5 out of 5 stars Praise worthy of praise.......2007-05-15

I never heard of Chris Tomlin before hearing his version of Amazing Grace/My chains are gone...so buying this album was a taking a chance for me. What a gift to have found an album where EVERY song brings glory to God. Great music...great singing...scriptural lyrics...I think even Paul the Apostle would approve. The refrains will stay with you and keep you lifted up all day!

Album Description

Leaders make the indescribable visible. Isaiah's words, for instance, brought comfort to a defeated nation and transformed a people's imagination, empowering them to mount up with wings like eagles. Those words bear fruits today, capturing a post-modern visionary's heart, urging Chris Tomlin to call together God's people for life-renewing worship.

"I feel as though we're like this landing strip in the desert for our great, incredible God to arrive on; a way for Him to come into people's lives," Tomlin says of the album's metaphorical moniker inspired in part by Isaiah 40. Tomlin's third studio record and first in two years, Arriving demonstrates a Christian's glad surrender meeting God's welcoming arms.

Tomlin's undeniable energy is charismatic and contagious. Avoiding the trappings of public performance, Chris stands beside the people he serves, raising his voice to God with them so that they share God's presence together.

Credited with venerable church choruses such as "Forever," "We Fall Down," and "The Wonderful Cross," Tomlin is considered one of this era's top songwriters for the church with five songs in CCLI's Top 60 and four more in the service's Top 500. With millions singing his songs weekly, Chris is recognized as a pivotal voice of today's modern expression of Christian worship.

Arriving rocks with inspiring, guitar-driven pop melodies reflecting the roots traditions of Austin, Texas, where it was recorded and home to the church Tomlin co-founded, Austin Stone Community Church. The project's raw, straightforward lyrics are knotted tight with hooks as big and broad as the Lone Star state sky. Producer Ed Cash (Caedmon's Call, Kathy Mattea, Bebo Norman) brings his signature touch to the tracks, revealing that the talent pool is deeper than even the artist knew.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the Best Worship Album of All Time.......2007-06-07

If you look at the title of this review, you may think I'm joking. I'm not. Arriving might well be the best worship album ever made. The only albums that I can think of in this genre that even come close to this one are Illuminate, by The David Crowder Band, Beautiful News, by Matt Redman, Hiding Place, by Selah, and Not to Us, by Tomlin himself. Every song on this disk is amazing and has a powerful message to it. Not only that, but the mixing, producing, and sound quality of the album are excellent as well. Tomlin has become one of todays' best singer songwriters in my opinion, and what he has crafted here will and should go down in history. His love for The Lord is immediately evident on the first three tracks of the album, "Indescribable", "Holy is the Lord", and "How Great is Our God". These three tracks stand out and are easily accessable by anyone. They have become staple songs in my church's worship services. However, my personal favorites are "Mighty is the Power of the Cross", which just shows the beauty of Christ's sacrifice for us, and the best song "Unfailing Love" with Steven Curtis Chapman. This track just shows us how much He loves us and through his sacrifice is willing to do anything for us. Pure beauty. If you are a lover of God, and a lover of standout Worship music, don't miss Arriving, by Chris Tomlin.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourites.......2007-05-15

Chris Tomlin is a truly gifted musician. I really enjoy listening to his music and love singing at the top of my lungs. This is a great CD. You'll be very glad to have it in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars He has Arrived.......2007-05-07

I play this cd all the time in my car. On a road trip with a friend, she loved it so much that the week we got home, she bought her own.

5 out of 5 stars all things well.......2007-04-24

When people complain about the shallowness of all modern worship music, they haven't heard Chris Tomlin. The singer has mastered Christian doxology that achieves true praise - the adoration of God rather than the introspection of self while one worships - by wedding language impregnated with biblical vocabulary to singable melody.

The 'worship wars' among which such achievements take their place suggest that Tomlin's is no small accomplishment.

ARRIVING focuses on the Lord's glory and its saturation of a world often too dim to understand that it's been filled. But not all are sightless:

'But rising up all around
Is the anthem of the Lord's renown
Together we sing
Let everyone sing:
Holy is the Lord God Almighty
The earth is filled with his glory'

Even with his focus on the Lord, Tomlin is able to express life here below, lived in the company of this Intimate Stranger:

'You have my heart and I am yours forever
You are my strength, God of grace and power
With everything you hold in your hand
Still you make time for me, I can't understand
Praise you God of earth and sky
How beautiful is your unfailing love
And you never change, God,
You remain the Holy One
And my Unfailing Love'

This is brilliant song-writing, rooted deep in biblical faith, understated in the performance arts, contagious to those with a penchant for singing along. ARRIVING could be a university curriculum for the How To Write a Song that People Can Actually Sing major. May its graduates multiply.

This CD is beautiful! The first cut is so anointed for worship. There are many that have now become familiar standards in contemporary worship. I highly reccomend this to anyone who likes Chris Tomlin. If you're unfamiliar with his work, you certainly will not be disappointed with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Finally!!!!.......2007-03-29

I am overjoyed with this project by Chris Rice! It's clean, clear, and uplifting. My 5 and 9 year olds knew the lyrics and drumline in 3 days! The harmony and health within the music is refreshing!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Chris.. you're amazing... but what is this?.......2007-02-20

Rice's previous albums are fabulous and extremely well-crafted. AMUSING, however, falls quite short of his other works. The songs lack depth and none of the tunes are really memorable. If you're looking for the best Chris Rice albums, check out "Smell The Color 9" and "Deep Enough to Dream"... those are worth your money. (Don't worry Chris... I still think you're really swell).

5 out of 5 stars Good...good...ok...really good..........2007-01-10

I never knew Chris Rice existed until about 6 months ago. His music blends faith, pleasing instrumental and a good voice together. Some songs are a little long and indulgent - but most have excellent feeling, pace and mood.

Good squared.

5 out of 5 stars Richness & Warmth.......2006-11-20

Again, Chris Rice moves me with the richness and warmth he conveys through his words and melodies. There is always a story or a narrative behind many of his songs, e.g. Sleepyhead, I See The Moon, The Final Move ... He always draws colourful pictures in this lyrics and continues to do so in this album. There is a little bit of sadness felt through these songs, but they are still beautiful in bringing out the richness, love, and warmth of relationships: relationship with the Lord Jesus Himself and with people. The number of songs in this album is fewer than "Short Term Memories", but this smaller collection is still a wonderful delight to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-10-25

I am impressed. I bought this CD because of "When Did You Fall In Love." I listened to the whole CD and thought, oh great, I didn't realize it was a Christian cd, I should have just bought the single iTune.
To my surprise, the second time I listened to it, I completely got into the music. Growing up, I only listened to Christian music, but got out of the habit when I went to college years ago. Because of this CD I was able to ease myself back into it without feeling hokey.
The music, the beat, all of it is just catchy. I find myself singing the melodies all the time.

There are few, if any, Christian artists who better understand the dynamics of worship-oriented rock music than Chris Tomlin. On Not to Us, his second major-label release, Tomlin raises the bar for anyone who ascribes to this ever-increasing popular format. He has a knack for blending irresistible melodies and catchy choruses that nearly always leave a pleasant aftertaste. Tomlin's wall-of-guitars sound on the opener, "Everything," the title track, and the anthemic "Famous One" cooks up enough firepower to light a church service. His constant touring with the One Day worship caravan over the last few years has clearly taught him how to lead the crowd with loud. But he can also deftly switch gears while never losing focus. There's nice counterbalance with the softer testimony of "Come Home Running" and the beautiful "Wonderful Maker." Ultimately, Tomlin showcases here a seldom-matched instinct for infusing familiar rock phrasing with modern worship at no cost to the integrity of either. --Michael Lyttle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This Album is More than Enough for Me.......2007-04-19

Tomlin is excellent. All of his albums are marvelous, but this one in my opinion, is his best. Every song on it shows the glory of God, and it is also a great musical composition. Over half of the songs here are played in my church, where I grew to love them, and to hear them by the original artist was awesome. My favorites would have to be "Enough","Not to Us","Famous One",and "Unchanging", which are all favorites for our church and our worship team. However, the song that has filled me with Christ the most from this album would be "The River". Thanks for all that you do Chris.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible CD.......2006-10-04

I have one word for this CD 'INCREDIBLE'.
It is simply the best CD on the market today despite any genre.
Every song is excellant. A must have for any CD collection.
Even the used market still has the price around $10 and it has been
out for several years. If you don't have this cd you must buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Corporate Worship CD of all time!.......2006-06-03

Yes, David Crowder Band is my favorite to listen to, but this is the ultimate in corporate worship. A praise and worship band could easily do a whole set of just these songs and the crowd would sing along loud with every word. My favorites include: Enough, Not To Us, Wonderful Maker, Famous One, Unchanging, and Come Home Running. But let's face it, there's not one bad song on here. And judging how good "Arriving" was, Chris Tomlin has proven that he is the real deal. He has a great voice, great song structure, and you will always find a bible-centered message. This CD is timeless and I will have it forever (or until the CD disintegrates from being overplayed!).

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Lord for Chris Tomlin!.......2006-04-18

One day I fall down on my knees and said everything I haven't said to Lord before, over the song Enough From that moment on I started to lisen to every Chris Tomlin song that could ever come out.And comeing the from town Grand Saline, Texas we hear him a lot. YES,Chris Tomlin use to live in Grand Saline so it's a big honer to have him in our town. Thank you lord!

This is the second cd I purchased on Chris and it's fabulous.I travel over a large mountain to go to and from work.So during one of my trips home I had my favorite radio station on which is KLOVE and I heard Chris's song on this cd called "ENOUGH" That's all I had to hear.I stopped the car on top of a large hill and just simply gazed up at the over powering stars and cried.I was totally awestruck. The song just filled me with God's awesomeness and love. The entire cd was definately God inpsired.Chris is one of my favorite Christian singers and I recommend this cd to EVERYONE!All Chris's songs are an eleborate way of epxressing his love and faith in the Lord. His music is beautiful.Very easy to hear the words and to remember them as well. The sound of the guitars are gorgeous. 5 out of 5 stars A CD that truly keeps on giving.......2006-03-20

This is my first Chris Rice CD that I have ever owned but after many of his songs have been on the radio for years I took a chance on a purchase and I am completely satisfied. This is truly a CD that keeps on giving! The words and different song styles combines with excellent vocals make it a great listen to wake up to in the morning, or fall asleep to at night. You truly feel God's presence and peace when listening to this CD, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Short Term Memories.......2005-11-28

I am not going to review each and every song on this CD... suffice to say that the CD is wonderful. If you are a Chris Rice fan , this is a must have, and if you are not yet a fan, this would be a great place to start.
God bless!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2005-09-09

This is a very enjoyable 'best of' collection by Chris Rice. He combines solid Christian lyrics with a pleasant mellow sound.

One song on here that is very good and is a challenge to Christians is "Go Light Your World." His admonition to go and make a difference to those who don't know Christ is particularly good. Another one that I had never heard before is "Mama Prays." It is one that should really remind parents of the importance of praying for their children.

There are several other very good songs and none that I dislike. Three of the songs in this collection are also on his 'Snapshots: Live and Fan Favorites' CD. Those are the following: 'Deep Enough to Dream,' 'Cartoons,' and 'Come to Jesus'.

For anyone who has children of any age, 'Cartoons' is a must have song. It will provide lots of entertainment and fun to the young and young at heart.

I would recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2005-07-10

I am 26 yrs old now but back when I was in my early teens I had the privilege to meet Chris. I went to a private Christian school and for 3 yrs in a row he was our Youth Pastor for the yearly state convention. Every nite for 4 days he would preach to us and perform. At the end he would sell his tapes. Back then Go Light Your World was known as the Candle Song. I don't think he had been signed yet to a record deal. One year he was even the a judge for the choir competitions. This is a man who truly believes in the message he is preaching and every song he sings will touch your soul. I would recommend buying every one of his cds because you will never want to listen to anything else ever again.

4 out of 5 stars YES!!!.......2005-02-22

This is a great "best of" album, and fits right in with any good Christian Contemporary music. If you like slow music, you shouldn't pass by this awesome album.
I bought Short Term Memories 3 months ago and I love it.
I've been listening to a lot harder stuff recently like Switchfoot, Newsboys and Audio Adrenaline, but I'd heard "Cartoons" on the radio and I thought "maybe this'll be fun".
It has a lot less crazy songs than I expected, so if you like Audio A or Newsboys you might wanna start with Cartoons and then listen to the slower stuff.
I don't usually like slow Christian music but I make an exception for this album.

I think everyone who hears Chris Tomlin will pretty much agree that he is an awesome singer and preformer but for me this CD put him over the top. The first song I heard from this CD was actually on the radio, the live version of How Great Is Our God. What an awesome song! Even though you will find all these songs spread out over his other CDs, this is a must for everyone's library because of the participation of the crowd as well as the way that Chris really seems to help us all to step right into the throne room of God.

3 out of 5 stars DON'T buy this if you want to listen to it on your computer.......2006-03-28

I enjoy Chris' music quite a bit. I won't pretend to be a music critic but his music is simply excellent.

But there's a problem with this CD. When I try to listen to it on my computer, it launches a music video that takes over my screen entirely. You can't listen to the normal songs on the CD. If you try to go back to the work that you were doing before you put the CD in the drive, then the Chris Rice video stops.

That's right, you have no choice but stopping whatever work you were doing and watching the Chris Rice video. You can't just listen to the music while you do your work.

Maybe this is some kind of reaction to copyright infringement. I think it's a shame. I'd be surprised if it were Chris' idea.

But when I listen to it in my car or living room stereo, it's a great CD ! I do wish that Chris would put more new songs on each CD though. Many of these are repeats.

3 out of 5 stars Come to Jesus.......2005-05-08

"Untitled hymn (Come to Jesus)" is a great song!
Get a taste of the album 'Run the earth...watch the sky' by Chris Rice by hearing about the songs.

Other side of the radio: I don't really like this song much. It's okay though. 1/5
Everything's OK: This song is really encouraging. a nice, upbeat feel to it 3/5
Nonny Nonny: Not so upbeat. Seems softer. Pretty good 3/5
Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus): This is a really good song. I love it so much. it is probably the best song on the album. I love it! 5/5
Smile: This radio single is really good. It's not really a ballad, though it's not that upbeat. It's abotut he longing for Heaven 2/5
8th Grade: An upbeat kind of song. Cool for driving to :-) Good 2/5
My Catherdral: I like the lyrics. It is a nice song. accoustic guitar driven. The echoeing is a nice touch, it makes him sound like he's in a catherdal! A nice tale of his past. I like the strings 3/5
Me and Becky: This is one of the best songs on the album. An upbeat tune. 4/5
Wonder: One of the not so great songs on the album, though it's not that bad. 1 1/2 /5 (That says one and a half out of five)
Spare an angel: A nice song. quiter. Chris goes a bit too high in this song..sort of. it's nice. 3/5
Circle Up:I think it's pretty good. Not really a ballad, not really upbeat. It's great. 3/5

5 out of 5 stars From Opposite Sides of the Universe.......2005-02-16

"Run the Earth, Watch the Sky" is an exquisite set of pop tunes about faith and God. On most CDs, if there are 2 or 3 songs I really like, it's successful. On this disc, there are 6! "Wonder" is a joyful pop nugget with Chris' expressive baritone gently caressing the lyric, "Shall we dance from opposite sides of the universe? And we'll shine the glory behind all our spins & turns as we orbit our way through the sky." What a lovely picturing of man reaching for God and God for man! "My Cathedral" is a sweet acoustic melody about the joys of worshipping outdoors, "Here beneath the blue skies, I ran down to be baptized." "Circle Up" is a sweet melody with a delightful vision of men & angels all joined in worship, "Great & small, angels all & seraphim, grab a hand, twirl a dance, circle up & worship him!" It's a delightful track. "Untitled Hymn" is a comforting melody that starts simple with piano before the strings come in as the song builds from loneliness to joy. "Spare an Angel" is a song that touches a deep chord for those whose hearts are troubled and no human comfort seems to satisfy. It's an elegant statement of compassion. "Me & Becky" is such a perky track that it makes me think it ought to be a TV theme song. While I've cited my favorites, none of the other tracks are weak. This set by Chris Rice is extremely strong with a positive delightful vision. Bravo!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2004-04-11

As usual, Chris Rice doesn't disappoint you. My family and I have enjoyed all his prior releases and this one is up there with the rest. This one in particular brings to mind a fond recollection of my childhood and my family.

5 out of 5 stars I get everything by both Genie and Chris.......2004-04-07

I got into Chris Rice's music with his former label-mate Genie. Saw them both signing autographs at a show.

I love both Genie and Chris Rice, but I have to admit that my all-time favorite CD is Genie's Higher Than The Heavens CD - I got that one with her awesome Amazon deal 4 CD set for under 30 clams!

I get everything by both Genie and Chris, and this Chris CD is really great. He and Genie are both so humble and it shows through in their voices.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD--A Must-Have.......2005-10-03

I heard one of the songs when I was listening to the Contemporary Christian music channel on my TV. I had to have that song, and now I am so glad to have the whole CD. It is just awesome. He has a voice I can't get tired of. Awesome music to play during my "quiet time" in the evenings, while I work on my Bible study.

5 out of 5 stars Is there an option for 10 stars?.......2005-04-26

My favorite CD of all time. It's like listening to poetry - absolutely beautiful. You will not regret buying this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Probably my favorite Christian CD.......2004-12-29

Chris Rice's first CD is still my favorite, and they are ALL awesome, so that says something. He has a great, mellow, James Taylor-esque sound, plus some of the deepest and most honest lyrics in Christian music today. In trying to write songs myself and in listening to a lot of Christian music, I have found that it is difficult to write heartfelt Christian songs that are not cheesy...Chris Rice achieves this as well as anyone.

Rice never sugarcoats his faith, but addresses real issues like the frustration of messing up over and over again, feeling weak and helpless, and feeling burdened by pain and shame. Yet a loud note of grace rings throughout all of these struggles that he sings of.

My favorite songs on this album are "Deep Enough to Dream" (great guitar part; a hope-inspiring vision of heaven), "Welcome to Our World" (a beautiful Christmas song that reflects on the wonderful mystery of the incarnation...lines like "Tiny heart whose blood will save us"), "My Tree" (a song that infuenced me a lot as an often lovesick teenager...likens Christ's love for us to being in love as a young boy, yet he avoids cheapening Christ's love in the process), and "Hallelujahs" (which gives words and a melody to the often inexpressible feeling of being overwhelmed by God's majesty as expressed in His works on earth).

This CD gave me strength to get through my first year of college some years back, and I have used it as a gift to friends who are hurting many times. It also makes a good gift for non-Christians, since the message is expressed in such honest language, without being "in your face" or obtuse with the message. This is a fine, fine CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2004-03-12

I found this Cd in a store when I was on vacation in Finland, and I first doubted to buy something from an artist I didn' know of. I took the chanche and never regretted after that!! This is one ot my top 10 cd's ever, and I recomend it to everyone. I thank God for finding this cd, for it was just that kind of music I loved - and searched for. Anyway, my favorite songs on the cd are "Deep enough to dream", "My Tree", and "Sams song" - but I love every song. Very good lyrics that gives you new revelations about god's love.

    Recomended!

    5 out of 5 stars Nice Rice!.......2004-01-01

In a world where every male solo Christian contemporary artist sounds like a clone of Michael W. Smith, Chris Rice breaks the mold, not so much in his sound (he actually kinda' sounds like Mr. Rocketown), but his songs on this effort are way better than Mike's have been since way back when he used to call his records "Projects." Peaceful, spiritual, meditative and reverent are how I would peg this cd, even with that one goofy song thrown in there. Chris is great at the piano and his voice is clear and full of worship. "Deep Enough To Dream" will be played on Christian radio stations just short of forever. "Hallelujah" and "Welcome To Our World" are both so sweet, melodic and touching that they are worth the price of admission all by themselves. This is pretty powerful stuff from an industry that tends to be very watered down and thinks good music means a sappy copy of the current secular trend (which is why I never go in for so called "Christian" music).
As an aside from all the praise, once you have heard this (his best) work, you have pretty much heard it all as his later cds tend to sound pretty much the same. Stick to this first effort and you will love Chris Rice. Listen to two or three of his works in a row and you may be calling him just another Christian artist who sounds kinda' like Michael W. Smith.
As an even further aside, he does have a cd not currently listed on Amazon called "The Living Room Sessions" (NOT the Christmas one) which is simply him playing traditional hymns with no lyrics on his piano in his living room. It is REALLY good. Track it down and be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want it to be.......2006-04-20

I just bought this soundtrack last night after listening to bits of it on iTunes, and it is such a beautiful score. I've seen the film... gosh, I don't keep count anymore, but every time, I always take in the music. And how can you not? James Horner is a wonderful composer, yet the music seems to take on a life of its own.
The opening number gets you right away: the Spanish-style guitar strum, the frenzied tap dance, and the horns. One thing you can definitely credit music to do is build, be it suspense or emotion. The tap dance builds and builds until the guitar takes over.
The second number begins with drums like thunderclaps, violins still keeping the tension. The horns and claps enter, and you have Zorro's theme again. Percussion picks back up around the two-minute mark, and it keeps a nice tempo.
I like to think that this soundtrack is like a Spanish version of Pirates of the Caribbean, another of my favorite films. But the horns always let you know, with special clarity, that this is Zorro.
Whether or not this soundtrack is good is entirely up to the person listening. Then again, if you don't like it, why are you listening in the first place? If you want to hate it, then it's terrible. But if you appreciate all the orchestrations, this soundtrack is a masterpiece. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound track.......2006-02-24

The soundtrack for the movie "Legend of Zorro" is far and away greater than the soundtrack for the original movie. It is the perfect piece for putting on in the background while you work or resting your thoughts. There is just the feeling of a fine wine when it's playing. I love the Spainish sound of guitar and orchestration. My office partner finds it wonderful to listen to also. For those who like soundtracks this is a must, and if you just like wonderful music, again, it is a must.

5 out of 5 stars "Horner, the legend has returned!".......2006-02-08

With "Collecting the Ballots" we are reintroduced to the awesome prelude Horner composed for The Mask of Zorro. The difference is that after the tap dancing and clapping, there's no loud bang of the main theme. The theme is expanded a bit and later makes its soft, heroic appearance.

The talk and hype of this album is the longest track: "The Train." Horner composes many long tracks for other works but this is one of, if not, his longest action track to date. It starts hard and fast with a Spanish trumpet, tapping and percussion all leading up to the very Spanish, fun Zorro theme at the 1-minute mark. From there it's non-stop action to the very end. This is one sweeping, swashbuckling ride of a score.

If you enjoyed the first Zorro music, you'll enjoy this one. However, there are no new themes only a multiple amount of use of the romantic theme from the first Zorro. This could be good or bad. It depends on your taste.

The action tracks really make this an awesome score. It's difficult to pick one composition over the over; Mask of Zorro or Legend of Zorro?

This is James Horner's best action score of the year. Add this one to your collection!

    4 out of 5 stars Great Fun!.......2005-11-23

    "The Legend of Zorro"
The movie comes at an unusual time, seven years after it's predecessor. Why one only has to wonder what took them so long to get around to it, it's provided us with a new James Horner score at the very least. The first score was one of his best action scores... fun, inventive, and with excellent themes. Everyone raved about Horner's creativity, how much different it was from the rest of his work. He's now returned for a sequel (he doesn't do many of those, he's only scored sequels for "An American Tail", "Cocoon", "48 Hrs" and "Star Trek") to "Zorro" and like his other sequel scores ("An American Tail 2" excepted), it's quite similar to the first one. The opening track, "Collecting the Ballots" begins with the same hard guitar strum as the first, and the notes of clapping that follow are identical to the original score as well... fortunately, it's not a complete repeat after that. The same themes are utilized throughout the score, there's no significant new ones (aside from a "false love theme", you'll understand when you see the movie), but Horner uses them in different enough ways to make this score interesting. The instrumentation is the same (clapping hands, stomping feet, tambourines, guitars, ethnic pipes, and blaring horns) but the rhythms and paces are different.

The overall feel of the score is slightly more playful than the original, but it never feels cartoonish. It's simply more fun and less threatening than the original score. Whether this is a pro or con I will leave up to you. The love theme is used more often than the main theme this time around, and it's featured in stunning arrangements several times, but the focus of this score is action music. The action is a lot of fun, and if you enjoyed the first score, you will likely enjoy this one as well. The album is refreshingly free of Horner's cliches while simultaneously sounding like a Horner score... mostly. The highlight track of the album, and there are a few to choose from, is probably "The Train". The longest cue, it's a nearly non-stop action piece that is superbly exciting and epic in structure. Near the end, though, it seems that Horner got so creative he actually jumps out of his own musical borders and seems to be channeling John Williams in "Revenge of the Sith" mode, without ever directly stealing from him. Fascinating. Another bonus is that we have no annoying pop song here, rather, we get an end credits suite (My Family is My Life) that goes back and forth between the main theme and the love theme in various forms. As you probably have noticed, Horner likes to end his scores on a quiet note... his end credits tend to finish the themes, and then fade off into oblivion with quiet, gentle, wandering strings or flutes. Not here. In a bold move not heard since the likes of "Star Trek" or "The Rocketeer" (some might include "Ransom"), Horner brings his score to a close with a mighty brass trill, finishing off his action adventure with a bang. Cool!

Okay, I'll stop raving and make my obligatory complaints. The score is only prevented from reaching a five-star level due to it's derivative nature. There are no new themes here of note, and a novice might have a hard time telling it from the original. But on it's own, it's excellent, and unlike John William's second "Harry Potter" score, this is a score that doesn't pale in comparison to the original. It may not have quite as many highlights as the original score, but it's a more consistently well-written and quality listen. Plus the end credits suite is far more satisfying than that silly song. I've heard better scores this year in "Kingdom of Heaven", "Hostage", "Star Wars", "The Greatest Game Ever Played", "Corpse Bride", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", and others, but few of them have been as much pure orchestral fun as "The Legend of Zorro." Recommended.
