Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04
This may be the best money I've ever spent. I got 2-1/2 hours of bliss for less than what I'd usually pay for one CD -- and you know how it is with music. You buy an album because of a song or two that you love, and you find that you like maybe half the songs on it. There's not a single selection in this one that I would've left out. It includes Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by Pepe Romero on the guitar with the Acadamy of St. Martin in the Fields. I needed to replace my old LP recording of that. But I also get 30 other classical compositions and traditional Spanish pieces, each special in its own way.
Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.
I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.
not what i expected.......2007-03-26
This CD for me was a waste of money. Its just not what i thought it would be. Others may enjoy it but for me..it wasnt what i was hoping to hear.
excellent guitar performances.......2006-07-27
Outstanding guitar performances. I gave it only 4 stars because I do not personally like some of the compositions.
Essential Guitar..........2005-07-26
Up until this collection, I'd never heard the "Cavatina" played in the Deer Hunter movie. After hearing it, I could play it all day and not tire of it! It moves me that much, considering that it's almost "not" a classical guitar selection. The rest of the music is first rate! Excellent playing, but the "Cavatina..."
Buy it and enjoy!!!!
Lives up to its Name!.......2005-06-10
If you only bought this double CD set, you'd have a good starter collection of classical guitar music. It includes most of the standards, as well as rarer pieces. In addition to the many solo pieces, there are several excerpts from orchestral works, with Rodrigo's indispensible Adagio from "Concierto de Aranjuez" topping the list. There are also several flamenco numbers included, complete with heel taps and castanets.
The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.
My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

That was then, this is now, and Hoy! Hoy! is still a classic.......2007-03-25
This album and the motivation behind it really needs to be framed in the context of Feat keyboardist Bill Payne in the liner notes to the "Hotcakes & Outtakes" box set: "My first thought (after Lowell George's death) - other than anger, then sadness - was 'Did he cover his kids, insurancewise?' I called up the accountants and asked them, and they said he didn't. So, I called up Ronstadt and a couple of other people, and we put together a benefit and memorial to Lowell - a tribute." That's what also lies at the heart of Hoy! Hoy!...it was a way to help Lowell's family financially, to bring a sense of closure and healing for the band, and...by releasing it commercially...involving Little Feat's loyal fans in the process. It's not a linear, logical, chronological "Best Of Little Feat" album, and it wasn't intended as one. Rather, it's a mix of odds 'n' sods from the archives, favorite tracks selected by the band, and "All That You Dream" (with Ronstadt and the late Nicolette Larson) from the aforementioned Lowell tribute concert. The booklet faithfully reproduces all of the photos and liner notes and anecdotes from the original vinyl release, which is a good thing, because they are essential...especially Bonnie Raitt's heartbreaking and heartfelt "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being eight years old." Just like the legendary New Orleans jazz funerals, the surviving members of Little Feat...instead of succumbing to depression over the loss of their friend and bandmate...put together a loving, diverse, and incredibly entertaining 2 record (now single CD) set.
Lowell George & The Band at Their Very Best.......2004-02-17
Little Feat was one of those bands I got into during high school (mid-80's) after their heyday had come and gone. I had read a review in Rolling Stone's "All Music Guide" stating that Little Feat was "one of the best-loved American bands from the seventies." And here I was, a big fan of seventies music, and I had never heard of them. For better or worse, that reader's guide was my bible, so I thought I'd give the band a try and pick up a greatest hits of some sort and give it a try.
The first thing that drew me to "Hoy Hoy" was the cover art -- almost all of the 70's, 80's and 90's Little Feat albums have great artwork done by the late Neon Park (aka Martin Muller). A german shepard with a Hawaiian lei and antlers watching a bone with pink bird wings fly away while sitting in front of a smoking volcano. I liked it. RIP Neon Park.
I found the music equally appealing. Here you're getting a mix of album cuts and live versions of the music. The live version of "Rock and Roll Doctor" is one of the best tracks on the album. You also get a little Lowell George gem by name of "China White." These two songs are worth the price of the album alone. But it doesn't stop there. In addition to several other George contributions, you also get several Bill Payne and Paul Barrere contributions that are just as worthy. After getting this album, I had to get my hands on the rest of the band's material -- I didn't want to miss the other gems that didn't make this album.
If you've never heard of Little Feat before, it's hard to peg them in any sort of musical genre. You get elements of Blues, Rock, Country, Jazz, and Funk. Every album relased was both visually and aurally appealing. Of course, Lowell George is no longer with us, his legacy lives on with this collection. Little Feat as a band continues to play as well. As far as I'm concerned, the "Rolling Stone Reader's Guide" was correct -- I love this band. Thanks for taking the time to read this!
Start your Feat 's a'tappin now.......2001-08-21
What a compilation. White-boy boogie blues with a funky swagger. For those of you being introduced to the Feat, this is the place to start. From here you will want to go through their entire catalogue with Lowell George singing (Rock/blues lost a treasure when he passed on...)Don't bother with the stuff put out after his departure. This compilation has a few live songs, outtake versions of original album songs, and other odds and sods. Rock in Roll Doctor,Skin it Back,Easy to Slip,Red Steamliner,Lonesome Whistle,Gringo,Over the Edge,Two Trains are essential Feat. Best of...compilation...whatever you call it, 'Hoy Hoy' is great music.
Back from the dead even if for a moment!.......2000-07-12
This is one great collection. Almost a story or scrapbook of sorts of that wild 70s outfit, Little Feat. Hear two versions of "Teenage Nervous Breakdown" side by side! Hear unreleased gems ("Framed" and "Gringo")! Hear a New Orleansified "Rock And Roll Doctor!" Hear a touching tribute to Lowell George by Linda Rondstadt! Marvel at the chilling "China White!" And Roll on Through the Night while it ends... A must have!
A Must for Feat Heads.......2000-06-30
A grab bag of tasty goodies for all Feat fans. Several live tracks which never made it onto Waiting for Columbus and a deep well of out-takes, alternate versions and curios. Plus a hilarious explanation of Lowell's slide of choice (because you can go just about anywhere and find one). If you love the Feat, you'll love this collection.

Album Description
Vikki Carr took popular music by storm in the 60s, quickly establishing herself as a performer of superstar caliber. "En Espanol" (the full title actually translates to "The Hits Of Today And Always") was one of Carr's bestselling albums on LP, receiving an Honorable Mention in 1972 from Stereo Review "Album of the Year." "Hoy" ("Today") includes hits such as "El Tiempo Que Te Quede Libre" and "Hasta Que Vuelvas," as well as the first Spanish-language recording of Allan & Marilyn Bergman's "The Way We Were."
Album Description
Twofer combines the 1972 album, 'En Espanol Los Exitos De Hoy Y De Siempre' with 1975's 'Hoy'. Collectables. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
So much more than mindless muzak !!! Bravo, Vicki Carr !!!!.......2007-05-16
Vicki Carr displays her incredible talent to interpret classic love ballads in Spanish on this "two-fer" CD. This "two-fer" CD contains all the tracks from two of Vicki's record albums entitled En Español Los Exitos De Hoy Y De Siempre (The Hits Of Today And Always)/Hoy; and there's hardly a dud in this lot. Oh, sure, not everyone will understand the Spanish lyrics, but when Vicki sings you can instinctively understand the universal human emotions of which she sings. As a Spanish student, I understood the gist of what she sang; and I was overwhelmed by her panache and flawless delivery of these fine numbers.
The CD opens with the track set from Vicki Carr's LP entitled En Español Los Exitos De Hoy Y De Siempre (The Hits Of Today And Always). The title track has a rich musical arrangement that complements Vicki's vocals perfectly as she sings of how she will return to her lover someday. The second song, entitled "Somos Novios (It's Impossible)," displays Vicki at her finest; she performs this masterpiece without a superfluous note. Excellent!
Other gems from the first LP track set include "Historía De Amor (Love Story)" with its haunting refrains; Vicki uses her excellent diction and timing to infuse "Historía de Amor (Love Story)" with a degree of sensitivity and quality control that I rarely hear. "Ahora Que Soy Libre" gives Vicki the chance to sing about being single again after a love has gone awry; her voice is rich, warm and vibrant and the musical arrangement makes good use of the strings and percussion. "Pero Te Extaño" offers an exotic musical flourish at the beginning; Vicki sings about how she misses her man.
The second LP track set then begins with "Hoy;" this song has a rich musical arrangement. However, the second song, "Sin Saber Por Que (The Way We Were)" really knocks you out with its beauty as Vicki delivers it magnificently. "Hasta Que Vuelvas" has a lovely Latin beat with an early 1960s flavor to it; and Vicki delivers this beautifully as she sings of how she is spending time apart from her man.
"Te Amo" starts with a strong musical flourish, too; and Vicki sings this with all her heart of how she loves her man. Excellent!
The liner notes contain a great essay about Vicki Carr by Vito P. Cifaldi, III; and you get the song credits and recording dates, too.
I highly recommend this CD for Vicki Carr fans; and persons who enjoy Latin easy listening music will flip over this CD! We are much better off for Vicki Carr's sharing her great talent with us; you don't need to understand all the words to appreciate the singular beauty of Vicki Carr's talent!
Bravo, Vicki!!!
Best Spanish Album of Vikki.......2007-02-20
I like Vikki's songs very much and have almost CDs of her. Especially I love Spanish songs. Above all, this CD is splendid!
Fantastico!.......2007-01-17
This cd was a Christmas gift for my Dad that is 81 yrs young. He LOVES Vikki Carr and said this one is excellent.
American music with spanish lyrics.......2007-01-16
I don't like this album. Good music has an strong effect on the listener, but this album is not good, and the music does not "send" the listener anywhere. I own, and am a fan of, music by Lucha Villa, Vincente Fernandez, Luis Miguel, Roberto Carlos, Jose Jose, Nelson Ned, Los Iracundos, Los Bukis, and Eydie Gorme. So for an american, I think I am familiar with, know and appreciate spanish and mexican music as well as most. And I'm telling you, this album is not "it". The long and short of it, is that the music does not "send" you. That may be a subjective judgment, that is, unique to the listener. But I think that my feelings areshared by lots of listeners, who for some reason are not represented in this reviews section. If I were to analyze the music, I would say that it sounds to me americanized, in an overdone Doris Day sort of way. Its mexican or spanish soul is absent. In its place, I would recommend Eydie Gorme.
EN ESPANOL/HOY - TWO GREAT CLASSICS!.......2006-12-03
En Espanol and Hoy on one CD -and worth every penny! These two spanish
albums are probably my very favorite Vikki Carr spanish albums.
I truly love every single song! And with such great songs as "Hoy", 'Hasta Que Vuelvas", "Y Volvere", and "Voy A Esperar" who can blame me? I have played this CD over and over and over again and I never get tired of it. On the contrary, I love it more and more each time I listen to it. If you don't already own this one, do yourself a favor and buy it. You won't regret it!

One of the best "La Folias".......2006-09-11
This CD contains a selection of Folia variations from Spain (mostly), Italy and France over a period of about 200 years. Savall and his ensemble are among the best -- their playing has a great richness to it. A very good anthology -- if you love "La Folia", you can't go wrong with this CD.
Amazing variety and delight.......2005-07-02
This collection contains dances and variations written on an old Spanish dance pattern. While the entire disc can be said to include only a handful of different harmonies, the endless sets of variations are anything but boring. Instead, they constitue a musical journey that takes you through three countries and over two hundred years of music-making.
The journey begins in Spain, around the time Columbus made his famous voyages. The first variations are filled with spirit and joy and are both wild in nature and yet refined and exquisite under Savall's fingertips. After a set of five wonderful pieces, there next comes a later Spanish piece for gamba, continuo, and...castanets! This piece concludes with a rousing col legno section that needs to be heard to be believed.
Next is a great rendition of Corelli's Follias, also known as his 12th violin sonata. The volin part is played in a period arrangement for gamba, and Savall uses the treble instead of the bass viol for the part, which sounds great and offers a good opportunity to comapre the treble viol to the violin. Under Savall's touch, the viol gives the violin a run for the money! Great fun.
Lastly, we have Marais' masterful Follias d'Espangne, and after hearing them performed like they are here, what more can be said? This CD would make a wonderful purchase for yourself or a friend, and would be a great way to introduce someone to early music. This disc is yet another reminder of why Jordi Savall, as the previous reviewer so well put it, deserves to be considered among the top musicians of our day. Alia Vox does a great job of presenting these discs in great packages and with wonderful sound quality. The days of second-rate period instrument performances are coming to a close.
A master's musical magic.......2004-12-29
Jordi Savall's special talent for reviving lost or obscure music is no better illustrated than by this album. The "Folia" are country dances, sometimes frenetic in their rendition, other times sedate and even-paced. The full range of those characteristics are presented in this collection of interpreters of the "folia" idiom. From Roderigo Martinez in the last years of the 15th Century to the Versailles Court musician Marin Marais two centuries later, Savall provides a glorious musical tour of time and place. He seems almost to transport himself away from the present as he plays. Time and space are compressed to an environment limited only by the music's expressiveness. With the roots in peasant dances, that's a wide space which Savall fills with delightful playing. The broad spectrum of styles in the pieces grant this CD an equally expansive audience.
Savall's group, whose renditions of these pieces can only be described as exquisite, is the core of later ensembles. Each member brings a strong sense of the professional to the music. Even given such a background team, it is Savall's rich, precise and meaningful use of the da gamba that rightly predominates. He is an undisputed master of evoking the fullest expression the instrument can produce. The music leaves the listener breathless even when but seated as an audience. What must it be like for a professional dance troupe to perform to these sometimes frantic tones? The entire performance is dazzling and inspiring. This CD could be considered the acme of his performances - a judgment tempered only by knowledge of later and even more glorious releases.
Alia Vox has taken the lead in producing the most superior of recording techniques for Savall's musical skills. Savall is more than just the leading viola da gambist in the world. He could be elevated to the finest musician without overreaching his abilities. The sounds are crisp and elevating. It's easy to see why "La Folia" is considered a "desert island" CD choice by many. Listen to it for yourself, with one you love, and endear yourself to someone by offering it as a gift. In all cases, the rewards are valuable. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
a favorite.......2004-06-13
This compilation of Spanish-insprired dance music is often in the player. It's tuneful and accessible. A similar collection by the Purcell Quartet feels more stilted and less joyful.
I would also recommend Savall's Elizabethan Consort Music, and Espanoleta by Chatham Baroque.

kumbia all starz.......2007-04-01
AB continued to do what he did with the kumbia kings, which is not a bad thing. He did very well considering that most artists that change names or go a seperate way dont do well at their first attempt. This album was going to be the next kumbia king album, but then the feud came on and it came out as the all starz. There are great songs featured on this album, including "mami", good for dancing, "anoche no dormi", "chiquilla", very much like the kings' "mi dulce nina". Overall it is great. I took away one star because of he remixes of "chiquilla", whihc i feel shouldn't have been made. They have no excitment. Should've kept it original.
Modern Latin Music.......2007-03-26
I enjoy this particular CD especially the songs; each one had a personality of their own. The Kumbia Kings group did a okay job presenting their titles. Overall, They could of been more selective about some songs which I didn't personally really didn't care for.

Customer Reviews:
Beware! two old CDs reissued with a new name.......2006-08-02
I bought this CD with great anticipation because I love Spanish music of this era. To my disappointment, this was not a new recording, but a reissue of two CDs I already own: "1492: Music from the Age of Discovery" and "Traveler." If you don't have these CDs already, this double set is a great bargain. But check your CD rack before buying!
A reworking of a prior disc - but now with 2 CDs.......2006-01-27
I was pleased to see that one of my favorite CDs had not really gone out of print, but was reworked into this title and now with a bonus CD. Even though I own the original "Music from the Age of Discovery 1492", I'll probably buy this disc just for the extras. Very nice mood music, lots of variety, exotic instruments and lovely voices.
perfect by candlelight or in the office.......2000-10-20
i've owned this CD for several years, and never tire of it. weather i'm curled up with a book, or just in the office with headphones on, it's appropriate for any occasion (outside a raucus party). i highly suggest it if you're interested in exotic, mystical, and festive tunes.

they're at it again!.......2001-08-07
The players here (also known as Unicorn and Oni Wytars) are among the very few truly brilliant early music performers. Not for them the dry, desiccated path of passionless scholarship! Unlike almost every other instrumental early music ensemble (and I've surveyed a LOT), they display fully engaged, scintillating musicianship at every turn. Their unconventional performance decisions tend to cut them out of critics' golden lists -- most of this music shouldn't really be considered authentically presented -- but such objections go lame and impotent before the vivacity and improvisational panache saturating this CD...along with their MANY others!
Musica en el Palacio de los reyes catolicos.......1999-12-07
One of my favorite cancioneros ,and one that I recommend to all.It is performed on period instruments, and it contains romances, songs from about the times of the "reconquista",instrumental pieces, pieces for viols, and solos for vihuela. One of my favorite pieces of this is track 14 Danza Alta by Francisco de la Torre,it's an intrumental piece for viols and recorder. This music that was performed at the court of King Don Fernando de Aragon. It is hard of finding recordings of Cancioneros at budget price so take advantage of this one...It's really good
Very good.......1999-07-11
Another 4 stars, though I don't share the reviewer from Australia's reservations about the lack of rasp in the singing. Who really knows how these notes were sung? It's a matter of personal preference. Alround a very good recording but not "the definitive" version of these songs (we may never have that). There is a companion disc by Wimmer : Early Music - Sephardic Romances which, like this one, has Spanish texts and English translations. (Naxos) 553617.
There is also another recording of similar material on Naxos : Royal Songbook, by Thorby and Musica Antiqua London - but that is marred by lack of texts or translations. (Naxos 553325)
And a final recommendation : Music of the Spanish Renaissance / Shirley Rumsey / Recorded 1991 / Spanish texts and English translations. 550614
Some very lively and lovely music.......1999-02-28
After centuries of Arabic and Jewish influence, the new music of Spain born at the court of Ferdinand and Isabella had all the strength of European melody with all the richness of rhythm and chromatic freedom of Northern Africa and the East. The performances by Ensemble Accentus do full justice to this music - largely because it and its director, Thomas Wimmer, have delved into and brilliantly performed the Jewish Sephardic music of old Spain. My only complaints are that there is not enough music here by Juan del Encina; and the singers do not understand the texture of old music. Most singers strive for purity and smoothness of voice and register, but the Renaissance loved loud, deep, rich, overtoned and raspy voices: voices with the sting of crumhorns and hurdy-gurdies. Here we hear some of the instruments played well, but not the larynxes which should accompany them. Nonetheless, a valuable and enjoyable CD for any fan of this era. [SW]

A cantar.......2006-02-15

Customer Reviews:
Heavenly music - amazing authentic Renaissance recipes!.......2005-06-08
This is an absolutely superb CD in every respect. The excellent selection of songs encompasses some of the finest composers of the Late Middle Ages-Renaissance including earlier masters such as Machaut, Binchois, Dufay as well as some exceptional composers of the Prima Prattica such as Isaac and his pupil Senfl. Compositions from France, England, Spain/Portugal, Germany, Italy and Burgandy are all represented too. The Isaac chanson 'Donna di dentro' may well be my favorite of this whole CD.
Equally exciting is the fantastic recipe book that comes with the lavish booklet. I have many a cook book and I can tell you this is as good as any of them and an absolute must if you are a Renaissance music enthusiast. Just as many a great score has laid in museums gathering dust for centuries, so too have many cook books been forgotten and their recipes lost to time. The efforts of many reknown contemporary chefs have been employed to resurrect some of these gems. The food tastes like nothing I have ever tried before - like listening to Renaissance music for the first time. If feels like you have stuck your spoon and knife (forks were a later invention and no self-respecting HIP music lover would eat this food with one!) into a Renaissance still life picture of a lavish meal and started eating.
One suggestion: definitely try the 'orange omelette for pimps and harlots'. Only thing routinely use one whole orange (peeled and put through a blender) AND a couple of tablespoons of a light non-bitter orange marmalade. Skip the extra added sugar and instead add some Cointreau to the mixture. Then serve hot with ice cream as a desert (desert omelettes are a sadly lost art), unless you feel that you HAVE to keep these strictly HIP because they didn't have ice cream in those days - make sure your favourite song from this CD is playing. You will think you have died and gone to heaven.
Hearing the spirit of the Renaissance is one thing but to also see it, taste it, smell it - now that's something else!!! I strongly suggest buying now as these sort of releases then to dissappear and if it does reappear the wonderful CD booklet with its recipes will likely be missing.
An irresistible combination of great food and music........2001-12-04
Food, Wine and Song is an irresistible combination of great food and music. I've even tried one of the recipes - the bread, almond and saffron pudding with a fig crust. It was delicious and preparing it while the CD played was inspiring. It was a perfect way to start this winter cooking season. The packaging is elegant!
