The Gold Standard.............2007-06-18
What does one say about his favorite singer's most famous album? Here is the absolute prime best of a GREAT singer. This is where her best known song comes from. If you don't know what song, quit now; I pity you.
OK, you're still here. The whole album is fabulous. If you want just one of Carly's albums, THIS is the one. ["Reflections" is a collection; different matter] Maybe you're like me and already have ALL of Carly's albums; you're a wise, and lucky, person. Otherwise, this is one of the two essential albums for anybody over a certain age [Carole King's "Tapestry" being the other]. Five stars aren't nearly enough.
The Best of the best .......2007-03-08
Probably Carly Simon's best album. Some hidden gems on here are "The Carter Family," "Embrace Me," "More than fond of Robin," and "We had no secrets," besides the obviously great "You're So Vain," and "The Right Thing to Do."
It's No Secret These Are Hits.......2007-01-12
When Carly sings, it captivates my attention. Her voice, musical arrangement and lyrics hold me, not to mention the cover. Every song on this CD is a hit as far I am concerned. She is singing direct from her heart and I can tell she is revealing some personal information about her private life. Leave up to Carly to write a song and leave people in mystery as she did for "You're So Vain".
Carly's crowning achievement........2006-12-22
Outdoing her previous pop-perfect albums "Carly Simon" and "Anticipation", Carly Simon's "No Secrets" blends the best of her pop/jazz/bluesy style. Like Carole King's "Tapestry" and Joni Mitchell's "Court and Spark", "No Secrets" marked the pinnacle of her illustrious singer/songwriting career. A classic album in every sense.
"NO SECRETS": CARLY SIMON'S ROCK CLASSIC.......2006-12-09
This album, Carly Simon's third, with its iconic cover image, is the one that really put her at the top of the heap of lady singer-songwriters. For "No Secrets" is an excellent album showcasing her strong songwriting, musicianship and vocal abilities.
Perhaps at the time, people were wondering what could she do to top "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" and "Anticipation", both great not only in their singles appeal, but also in their crafting. Then along comes "You're So Vain", her powerhouse diatribe to a smug, conceited ex.
However, "You're So Vain", being as great as it is, is not the only example of greatness on this album, which is another one of Carly's classic, timeless releases. There are several other masterpieces here: "Embrace Me, You Child", her song-memory of her father's illness and death is infused with religious imagery which evokes the god-like power she must have imagined, as a child, her father (Richard Simon, the founder of Simon & Schuster Publishing) to possess; "Waited So Long", a bluesy-rock number (featuring an excellent turn on slide guitar by Lowell George of Little Feat) follows and is another fascinating glimpse into her relationship with her father and its sassiness is interestingly juxtaposed with "Embrace Me, You Child"; "It Was So Easy" is a wonderful sing-along ode to the lost innocence of childhood; "His Friends Are More Than Fond Of Robin" is such a gorgeous ballad in which is expressed a pure, simple, unrequited love; "The Carter Family" is a moral tale of a person who never realizes, until it's too late, how much certain people really mean. Then toss into the mix the bouncy hit "The Right Thing To Do", her rocking take on James Taylor's "Night Owl" and the intoxicating title track and you have an album that flows seamlessly.
Carly Simon's lyrics have always been top-notch musical poetry and on "No Secrets" we have some very special sly nods I particularly enjoy. In "Waited So Long", she references her first big hit, letting us know she's changed her mind about marriage ("I met a boy with eyes of green/The warmest eyes I'd ever seen/He gave his lovin' love to me/The way I've always heard it would be") and the closing track, "When You Close Your Eyes", obviously harkens to James' "You Can Close Your Eyes".
Carly's vocals run the gamut of sweet ("The Right Thing" and "Robin") to ferocious ("You're So Vain" and "Night Owl"). It seems she knows, intuitively, how to properly emote the feelings of each song to the listener.
"No Secrets" is truly a rock classic worthy of space on anyone's shelf.

Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Gosford Park Sound Track.......2007-03-30
The original music is creative and very listenable. It is typical of popular music of the 1930s. This CD is highly recommended to those people who enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s.
Better than the movie.......2004-12-08
Many people, I believe, buy a soundtrack because they are mesmerized by the movie and want to extend the experience by listening to something that reminds them of it. But "Gosford Park" is hardly that kind of movie. It is brilliant and atmospheric as it analyzes the British class system, but that's hardly the kind of thing that wins the heart. The soundtrack of this movie was my favorite CD from last year, and the reasons I liked it had nothing to do with the movie.
Why is this music so compelling and winning?
First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.
Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.
My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.
I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.
I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08
Unlike many reviewers here, I didn't buy the CD to hear the Ivor Novello songs or Jeremy Northam's voice. I actually liked the instrumental tracks, and never actually thought I'd like to listen to something played on an accordion.
However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.
My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??
Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.
Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23
I fell in love with this soundtrack when I watched Gosford Park in the cinemas.
Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.
I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.
Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.
One the best soundtracks out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-06
When I saw the movie at the theater I kept thinking I've got to have the soundtrack to this movie because it is so beautiful. I also really enjoyed the sung songs 6.And Her Mother Came Too, 10.I Can Give You The Starlight, 11.What A Duke Should Be, 16. Only For A While, 20. The Way It's Meant To Be, 24. The Land That Might-Have-Been!! I think that Patrick Doyle did a wonderful job of scoring this movie the just fits right in with it all, I only wish there was more to listen to!! I highly recommend this album to everyone who liked the movie and people who love great soundtracks, you will not be sorry if you buy this!!!!

If this saucy quintet sounds familiar, you might remember them as the impish female background singers behind Aaron Carter's teen pop classic "Oh Aaron" and his oddly titled "Stride (Jump on the Fizzy)." If that doesn't jog your memory, recall how they transformed Kim Wilde's "Kids in America" into a futuristic pop anthem for the Jimmy Neutron soundtrack. Named in homage to No Doubt, No Secrets does have a huge one: not only do they have an abundance of talent, but they also have the preternatural sense of ironic self-knowledge that Prince showed in his formative years. Their Prince-like sensibility inflames their songs with a playful outrageousness. In "That's What Girls Do" they demand: "You ask me why I change the color of my hair / You ask me why I need 32 pairs of shoes / You seem to ask me why I got a lot of things / It's just a chick thing / You ought to let it go." These five supremely confident young women have none of the coyness or the unrelenting earnestness usually found in teen pop. Instead, they have a genius for dynamics and off-beat rhythms, and a wicked sense of humor that elevates their songs of love and female empowerment into playful, provocative gems. --Jaan Uhelszki

great .......2006-11-28
I LOVE THIS CD! HERE'S WHAT THE SONGS MEAN TO ME;
That's What Girls Do; I think it means that this is what girls do and deal with it type of song. " That's what girls do, they keep you guessing the whole day through..."
On The Floor: I don't really know what this song is about. I think it's just like a party hip hop song. " On the floor. That's where it goes down, everybody's dancing to our brand new sound..."
Skin Deep: This means to me that a boy shouldn't just like you because of your looks. He should take time to see that there's more to you than just "skin deep." " Yeah, yea. yea yea, I need more than you've givin' me skin deep, get down to the bone.."
Kids in America; i think this is just a fun song. " We're the kids in america, we're the kids in america we're the kids in america..."
It's Alright: This to me means that it's gonna be alright between your BF and you. " It's alright.. We'll make it happen baby all night.."
I'll Remember You: To me this songs means that they'll never forget their boys and always remember them even if they move away or something... " I"ll remember you, and baby that's forever true.."
Here I Am: To me this means that you should always keep on shooting for you dreams. " here I am, here i am, here i am, isn't it crazy?...
Hot: I think this is about just having fun with your friends on a summer day. " I like it, it's alright, the beat is pumpin' don't stop.."
I KNow What I Want; I think it's about knowimg a boy likes you and telling him to just come and talk to you. " Do i gotta gotta get in your face? Dont' have a lotta lotta time to waste.."
What Are You Waiting For?; I think it's about liking a boy and waiting for him to notice and talk to you. " What are you waiting for? R U crazy? Open up your eyes and see what's going on.."
NO Secrets. I think this is about not keeping very bad secrets and lettying them out. " Coss my heart and hope to die, i swear these lips will never tell anoother lie.."
It's great.

Great Single.......2005-10-06
These girls are talented and lovely at the same time. In entertainment, that's a lethal combination. The songs are catchy and fun to dance to. These songs can even make a lousy dancer like me look good on the dance floor...well, maybe not. But I still love these songs. Plus I'm replacing what I lost in a car fire. That's the last time I buy a Nissan Sentra.
Best SONGS EVER!!.......2005-07-11
No Secrets' Single is AMAZING!! I love all the songs on it and wish that Comes Back had been on their album. Angel went solo (her album is even better than No Secrets' (hard to believe)), Erin went solo (now Nicki Foxx) (her single comes out soon). Hopefully, oh God please, Jessica Fried will go solo. Alright here are my ratings, and ignore the review below mine, they're just jealous that they don't have talent.
1. That's What Girls Do -- 10/10
Great rythm, it's the first song on the album.
2. Comes Back -- 20/10
Great lyrics, great tune, Angel pulls this one off with an A+++.
3. Album Snippets
-Skin Deep -- 9/10
Great slow song, gets rid of people with a relationship all about beauty.
-What Are You Waiting For? -- 10/10
Very upbeat & happy
-I'll Remember You -- 10/10
Give this song to a friend that's moving.

I know that most of the people listening to this music are just kids, but come on, people! How can you think that this generic sugar-coated pop [stuff] is actually music!? This music, like anything by Avril Lavigne, Aaron Carter, Play, Dream, or any of those other [guys], is carefully designed and marketed ...for the Cartoon Network viewing robots that make up pre-teen America. You see the commercials for their [bad] CD's right alongside the Cheerios and Playstation 2 commercials. Not that there is anything wrong with Cheerios or Playstation 2, they are great products. But music should not be just a product.
Take my advice, kids. There are wonderful bands out there that you won't be seeing commercials for on the Cartoon Network (or anywhere else, usually). Bands and artists like Tool, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, The Police, Pearl Jam, Barenaked Ladies, David Bowie, Tori Amos, Coldplay, Radiohead, etc., etc. These are all mainstream artists, and yet they are truly talented, with intelligent lyrics, amazing singing voices, beautifully complex, layered, and heart-wrenching music, and refreshing and original ideas. Some of their music is poppy, lighthearted and catchy, and some of it is raw and blistering with emotion. Some of it is soothing, and some of it is haunting and disturbing. There is so much variety in the music catalogs of just the handful of bands that I mentioned here, that anyone could find something they liked. Why resign yourselves to the ...mainstream, corporate popular music? Which is exactly what you're doing when you plunk down your cash for these "here today, gone tomorrow" pop groups. And if you like music with more of an R&B flavor, why not get Erykah Badu or Fiona Apple or Lauryn Hill or something? Heck, even Janet Jackson is better than these girls. But I would say stick to her earlier work.
One day you guys will be embarrassed that you ever spent money on this cheap imitation of music. I hope when that happens, you'll remember the names of the bands I mentioned, and decide to check them out. You'll discover an entire world you never knew existed. Sounds dramatic, I know, but trust me. I just hope that maybe one of you will take my advice to heart before you waste years of your life listening to this [stuff].
Mixed feelings on this single..........2002-10-17
I have listened to a few "girl groups:" PYT (which broke up), Dream, Play, and now No Secrets. No Secrets does not impress me much. They have 5 members, unlike the other groups that I mentioned that all have 4 members.
What I did not like:
1. All the girls look about 13-14 and they have way too much makeup on. The bleach blonde looks like a total bimbo.
2. "That's What Girls Do" is totally annoying.
3. These girls need singing lessons. They cannot harmonize at all.
4. There is no lead singer. In all the other groups I listed, there is one/two member/s that consistently sing lead and bring the music together (Ashley of PYT, Holly of Dream, Faye/Anais of Play). In my opinion, there should be at least one, or maybe two, lead singers in every group of more than 3.
Things I liked:
1. "Comes Back" - good rhythm, somewhat good vocals
2. "Skin Deep" - lyrics sound promising, vocalist on this song sounds good.
I have not yet decided whether I will purchase the entire album, but I would definitely rank this group lower than Dream and Play. Once they get a little bit older (15-16), develop better singing abilities, and get a lead singer, this group might do well.
i love no secrets!.......2002-08-03
this is a great single, i can't wait for the full cd to come out
the first track, that's what girls do is about how guys don't understand girls sometimes
track 2, "comes back" is about when friends turn they're back on you and how it will all "come back" to them in the end
there are three snippets: skin deep; about when someone only likes you for what you look like and not what's inside;
"what are you waiting for": about when a girl likes a guy and she wants him to make the first move;
i'll remember you; is about when a close friend moves away (it's a ballad)
all of the songs on this cd are very "poppy" and upbeat
i've also heard three other songs of no secrets and really great too

The Unknown Speed Rapper.......2007-02-18
Sandman is a decent alternative if you have not listened to Bone Thugs or are wondering what his style is like.
As most of the reviews here are positive, I can only add by saying I hope he collaborates with Bone at some point in the future; his style fits so easily with theirs and the fact that on most of his songs (this album and the previous one) he raps with his full stutter/speed style.
Best track for me on this album is 'Let's Ride'.
His other album is called 'King of Hallucination'. It's difficult to find, due to availability only through his record company (Lifestyle Records).

Yes he is one of the REALEST AND DOPEST rappers you'll ever know. Once you've heard, you'll why the what's on the radio can't compare.
Everything about this cd is raw. There is no lack in production to me, like Krayzie would say-"its all G double O-D good!!" his beats are flawless, lyrics are flawless. a must for bone fans, and even though he is cloneist to bone, but the bone members themselves would be proud of him for holding it down! "redrum Part II" (amazon doesn't have the II) and mental bruises are ridiculously tight, and "dark light" is one most rawest tougue twist songs you'll ever hear!! For real. More people need to know about him, and those of you who do come upon this page, no worries on high prices or it not being in stock, just go lifestylerecords.com to purchase this gem. They used sell on here but stopped, don't know why, it was getting out to a larger mass of people through Amazon. thats what i have been calling this guy the past 5 years lol.it amazes me that he's not more popular now.and pretty much all the previous reveiwers was right he's like a combination of twista's flow with bone thugs n harmony's melodic harmony style.however he primarily credits bone as his influence and it shows in his music.a good example of this would have to be the song mental bruises, and sunday.these trax really showcases his verry diverse style of rapping.
the album does suffer from uninspired production, but some of the beats actually do him justics.but even that is not a henderance to this VERRY hard to find cd.
Murderapolis612Folk@msn.com----BEST BASS LINES AND LYRICS .......2004-09-21
Ill start off with the truth, Sandmans beats are PERFECT. His lyrics are PERFECT. The interludes are bumpin. No boring beats on this album. They're just not wack an annoying like some of twistas and bone thugs etc. No one listen to "were just hyped up by the album". Ive owned a copy of this album for about 2 years. STILL PLAYING IT CONSTANTLY. Sandman is that artist who people always ask whos rapping? this sounds tight as hell who is this? whered you get this? where can i get it? If they jacked up the price to about 35 dollars, and let you preview it, No doubt you would buy it if you like fast, clear, great not boring beats!,deep lyrics, real lyrics, no im gunna kill ur momma and eat her head crap, This is like combining all the bone thugs into one and making a SUPER BONE. unstopable, incompetable, invincable, lyrical genious. You cant go wrong with buying this album. I PUT IT ON MY DEAD GRANDPAS GRAVE AND MY MOMS GRAVE THAT THIS ALBUM IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. id pay tripple the price. www.sandman-online.com

Reaching for the Summits.......2001-11-27
It was with eager anticipation that I awaited the arrival of this CD. I love the music of Alan Hovhaness and I had a radio version of VISION FROM HIGH ROCK and the old LP by Louisville Orchestra of Symphony #15 'Silver Pilgrimage'. The delightful 'Mountain of Prophecy' was an added bonus plus the introduction to the music of the other two composers featured on this CD dedicated to mountains: - Michael Young & Gregory Short. I had always enjoyed the sound of the murmuring pizzicato strings in the 3rd movement ('River of Meditation') in Hovhaness' 15th Symphony as these very much seemed to conjure up this bubbling river timelessly moving ever onwards back to the Source - in the performance by The Louisville Orchestra under conductor Robert Whitney. Sadly these were inaudible (and questionably present at all) on the current version whilst the section lasted 7:32 on the LP and 11:02 on the CD whereas original tempo markings suggest a time around 5:00! Whilst VISION FROM HIGH ROCK closely resembled that of the radio performance, Symphony #15 for myself was sadly lacking in what Hovhaness called his 'spirit murmur'- aleatoric passages. If it was a case of a misunderstanding with regards to the levels of the different orchestral sections in the mixing sessions, then, perhaps this can be remedied and reissued - if so, please let me know. But one is left in considerable doubt as to whether they were present at the recording at all! - without the advantage of this previous LP recording I would never have known. Nevertheless, it must be stated that I felt that the flute playing was a big improvement on the LP version - sounding far more like a Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) than its predecesor - and it could well be that to supply more of that mood the tempo was greatly reduced and equally possible that performing the rhythmless murmurings supplied by the strings didn't work so well at this slower tempo. The third offering from Hovhaness "Mountain of Prophecy" I'd not heard before and, therefore, cannot compare. However, it is a beautiful piece with many changes - brief spirit murmur's etc, and again comes from this early-middle period of the late composer. I would have dearly loved to recommend this new release wholeheartedly but, in view of the shortcomings mentioned, I am reduced to giving it only 3 stars.

Three years after the mean-spirited Laughter & Lust proved he'd lost all taste for the pop life, Jackson grows up gracefully by adding lyrics to the wide-screen compositions that have been his strength since a dazzling "After Midnight" turned up on Hal Willner's tribute to Thelonious Monk. Here guest vocalist Taylor Carpenter turns in a strong performance, while "Lullaby" and "The Man Who Wrote Danny Boy" are art songs of invention and beauty. In this context, his four instrumental Nocturnes are breathtaking. Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
I love this one..........2006-02-15
I've enjoyed Joe Jackson's music for years and have followed along through the myriad of style changes and maturing of his music. It's a shame he gets lumped in with "those new wave guys" when really he bears little resemblance to the groups of the late 70's early 80's who stayed in those niches. I wish this album - along with Heaven & Hell, his diverse song cycle on the seven deadly sins - were linked into his full "pop" catalog instead of in the classical section where, frankly, the music won't find many new ears amongst the wider audience and precious few adventurous ears amongst the classical audience willing to check it out. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen!
Haunting and Lyrical, but not for all tastes.......2000-06-01
Music for the dark night of the soul. The kind of thing that makes you want to call the artist and ask, "My God-- are you all right? " Some of this is beautiful, some of it is darkly touching, and every time I hear the first bars of "Flying" ("the older I get, the more stupid I feel") I can't help but laugh. Mortality, age, hope, creation-- this is a cd for grownups, and for people who don't mind music that is impossible to pigeonhole by genre. It's not something that I listen to often, but I still consider it one of the essentials in my collection.
Different for Joe.......1999-09-12
I like to think of myself as pretty open-minded, and willing to follow Joe most anywhere he would go musically, but I was rather disappointed in this. Emphasis is on his slower, more introspective side. No more snotty tirades--he's growing, OK, but a lot of this music I think is pretty, but not terribly memorable. I like "Ever After" and "Danny Boy"; the rest is very slick stuff with not much substance. The production is very clean to the point of antiseptic, electric keyboards and synthesized strings all about. Background music for sure. I was much more impressed with "Heaven and Hell", his next project, I believe--good ideas, good songs, novel arrangements.
Mesmerizing music for the night.......1999-04-16
Night Music haunts me every time I listen to it. Jackson has crafted a masterpiece that needs to be experienced with the lights out. An elegaic mood is created by his songs. Enjoy!!!!
Nothing Better After Midnight.......1998-09-16
One of the principal reasons I am a Joe Jackson fan is that he seems constantly to recreate himself and to explore new musical vistas, teaching me something along the way about jazz, classical, etc. He does it again on this album, a mood piece if there ever was one: best listened to between midnight and sunrise. The songs are perfectly crafted and rendered and most of them linger in my mind for days.

awakening of strange potentials within the collective "self".......2000-03-18
those possessing of receptivity may find this album to be as captivating as i have... cold, somewhat grating sounds echoing off the walls of strange rooms within the shell of the psyche yet to be explored, the energies of these rooms reflecting from the walls and penetrating the listener in ripples and waves, culminating at the end of the album with these energies forming into rhythms that awaken a chaotic, primal, bizarre, and expansive serpentine electrical current at the base of the spine and rising upwards giving rise to strange and bizarre apparitions.

Customer Reviews:
Moving and beautiful CD.......2002-11-09
I was lucky enough to sing in the St. James Cathedral Choir the year we recorded this CD. While they were often demanding recording sessions, the music is still some that I've never heard done better. The Biebl "Ave Maria" (track 11), with Howard's tenor solo can still move me to tears with it's soul-wrenching beauty, and the Bruckner "Agnus Dei" (track 8) is divine (just to name my favorites). While the choir has an amazing blend, it did not end up a homogeniged sound like many other large choirs. The listener really gets to hear the minute details of the music and dynamics that make this music a spiritual epihany.
Glorious Music.......2002-07-02
This is a stunning musical treat. The music is beautiful and varied. The Biebl 'Ave Maria', alone, is worth the CD. Highly recommended for choral and pipe organ lovers.
