Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Mixed bag.......2006-10-11
Although I've had this album since it came out in 1984 - first on vinyl and more recently on CD - I only got to see the movie it's from a few weeks ago. I'd like to say it was worth the wait but I don't want to lie.
But this is about the soundtrack. It's a mixed bag. Some of the songs are simply stunning, especially ones like "It's You" and "Weakness" where Stevie duets with Dionne Warwick. The chemistry between them works so well, to this day I still wonder why they didn't do more stuff together. Talking about where Stevie flies solo, the title track I simply don't get while on the other hand, "Don't Drive Drunk" sends a very useful message with a manic kind of humour that makes it enjoyable every single time I hear it. "Love Flight In Flight" is classic Stevie and the instrumental track "It's More Than You" is a joy - especially to a jazz head like me. I also wonder why Stevie never did more instrumental or even jazz work. Despite what I remember reading him say in an interview many years ago, it's not like he hasn't got the talent.
Then there's the one track where Dionne flies solo and "Moment's Aren't Moments" is simply musical passion.
Finally there's the dire "I Just Called To Say I Love You" which was (and still is) anathema to many Stevie fans worldwide. The song makes me cringe every time I hear it. Ironic then, that it was one of his biggest selling singles of all time and the only one of his singles to get to number one here in the UK. Go figure.
Like I said, a mixed bag. But no Stevie Wonder fan's collection could be called complete without it. Highly recommended.
Stevie does it again!!!!!.......2006-03-09
Dionne Warwick sings with Stevie on a couple of thes tunes, she trully compliments his voice. A masterpiece.

Just as Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On was about much more than the sex that it celebrated, so does Meshell Ndegeocello's putative love album Comfort Woman have more than seduction on its mind. Lust and romance frame the record's concerns, but as with Gaye's work, they're seen as a liberating force: "I wanna get free with you," sings Ndegeocello near the disc's beginning; she later quotes an anti-pie-in-the-sky verse from Bob Marley's "Get Up Stand Up" to hammer home the theme of salvation on Earth. Similarly, Comfort Woman is more musically ambitious than the bulk of recent neo-soul sets with which it shares an audience. A number of dubwise excursions and rock guitar solos ensure that a debt to the '70s is paid, but this is hardly a slavish Gaye/Curtis Mayfield tribute. Comfort Woman finds Ndegeocello in an inspired frame of mind and at a peak of invention. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
quiet sensual music.......2007-07-11
I am loving this cd. It is very low key, quiet and very sensual. I love to listen to it when I am relaxing in the bath or getting a massage. It is very different than anything else I have ever heard, a complex mix of music and vocals. Overall it is a cd I turn to when I want to be comforted and get back in my body and my mind.
QUINTESSENTIALLY PHENOMENAL.......2007-05-20
Meshell N'Degeocello IS without question one of the sexiest, most progressive, creative minds in the music arena. When so much of the New Millennium's music dives to the leechy depths of misogyny, extreme materialism, cultural and political ignorance and an overall lack of the qualities that render music an artform, everything that this woman composes is GENIUS...creative expression at its very, very best - - - unbelievable production that fuses everything from jazz to reggae to the native rhythms of the Motherland and lyrics that demand that you take your mind to a deeper level.
Grows On You.......2007-05-01
Unique in a lot of ways.
Takes getting used to. Most of the tracks just kept getting skipped for a while, but surprisingly, they grow on you. If you are open to a wide variety and artiste's experimenting various style, go for it.
Good things come to those who Wait!!!!.......2007-03-08
It took me forever to get this CD but when I heard samples of it from her website I knew I had to have it and I wasn't disappointed. A must have!!!
..........2006-12-31
This is the first Meshell Ndegeocello album I have bought. (When I discover new artists, I usually start from the most present to the older stuff...) At first, I absolutely hated it and I put it away for quite awhile. I listened to it again... still nothing. Today, I gave it a final listen and absolutely loved it. You really have to be in a certain mood to appreciate this album. You have to be feeling very relaxed, yet still attentive. The project is short and sweet. The insturmentation and vocals are beautiful. If you don't like it at first, try again. I am so enthused that I am now going to buy all of her other albums. I highly recommend Comfort Woman.

Odd Couple That Works.......2006-06-25
A few years back I found a vinyl copy of NORMA DELORES EGSTROM FROM JAMESTOWN NORTH DAKOTA at a flea market in Albuquerque, N.M. Having loved Peggy Lee all of my life, but never having heard this particular album, I bought it for a buck or so. (I first paid really close attention to Peggy Lee when I was around twelve years old, at an alcoholic neighbor lady's house on my block, where I did chores for pocket change. This overly generous lady, who resembled Phyllis Diller, would drink gin out of a tall paper cup all day long with the drapes closed, and she would let me paw through her LP collection, where I discovered LATIN ALA LEE. In the following weeks, I would play that scratchy record over and over on my besotted host's console stereo). By the time I first heard NORMA DELORES EGSTROM..., I was in my mid-forties (this was around 1997), and was now thoroughly acquainted with most of Ms. Lee's catalog. I put the album on my turntable for the first time with some trepidation, as this great singer's first few post-Capitol albums in the seventies were, to say the least, not among her best efforts. Boy was I surprised! How had this excellent album eluded me for all of those years? Here was a mix of contemporary material mixed with old chestnuts that was handled with the flare of Peggy Lee in her prime, and I could not have been more pleased. The ragged edges and shortness of breath that were beginning to show up in Lee's voice around this time only added to the charm of these performances, and one tune, Leslie Duncan's "Love Song" moved me to tears. "When I Found You" was another standout on this set, gently rocking and confirming once more that Peggy Lee could sing just about anything with class and style. For those who still doubt, pick this "twofer" up and marvel at how Lee handles songs of the younger generation at that time, "Superstar" and "A Song For You." If they weren't already, Peg helped them become new standards. The version of the established standard, "I'll Be Seeing You," on this CD, is now among my very favorite Peggy Lee performances.
Now there's not much I can add to what other reviewers have written here about I'M A WOMAN, an album I've been waiting for years to come out on CD. Peggy's sly, swingin' rendition of "There Ain't No Sweet Man (That's Worth The Salt Of My Tears)" is alone worth the price of admission, but every song here is perfectly sung. One can just see the twinkle in Peggy's eye (and the tongue in her cheek) as she tosses off "Mack The Knife" in a half-whisper at breakneck speed. The sound effects make it fresh and funny, while somehow only enhancing the song's sinister undertones. "A Taste Of Honey" is gorgeous, and "Alley Cat Song" is one of Lee's great signature tunes, along with the title track. Although Rick Nelson's version of "I'm Walkin'" is not threatened by Ms. Lee's take, she makes it shine in her own, effortless way.
Taken together, these two records are a solid set, but are quite different; each could easily stand on its own. One note of caution: as mentioned by others, some of the tracks on NORMA DELORES EGSTROM... are not the same takes that were used on the LP version, and are not quite as polished (although certainly not bad). My guess is that the original masters were lost or were damaged. I was vaguely disappointed, and would have deducted half a star, but Amazon doesn't provide that option to customers, so the five-star rating stands, as these albums should be bought and heard by fans and newbies alike. They're great!
SUBLIME 70'S PEGGY LEE MASTERPIECE~BRAVO!!!.......2006-04-05
As a sixties teen who loved rhythm and blues and the great American classic singers, Peggy Lee always stood out as one of the ultimate greats and this awesome two-fer Import is THE masterpiece all of us baby-boomer fans have been waiting for with "Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota" being the "finally" released on CD treasure...and why it took so long remains a mystery but it is clear that nobody at the Capitol Tower in the US has a clue what went on with Peggy Lee or Nancy Wilson in the musically bankrupt seventies but thank heavens for the Capitol Records EMI Import division or else this release probably would have not happened in our lifetime!!!!
Peggy Lee is at her jazzy and sultry best throughout "I'm A Woman" purring out classic greats such as "Mack The Knife", "A Taste Of Honey" and her standard "I'm A Woman" which is still being sung by young jazz singing hopefuls in clubs across the country but none quite as effective as the definitive and very sensual version found here in this magnificent set. This compelling and engaging collection is truly a lost classic that is now thankfully available for all to savor and enjoy.
Next is the magnificent lost masterpiece "Norma Deloras" and from the great opener "Love Song" composed by Leslie Duncan, it is clear that Peggy Lee is going to take all of these great contemporary standards and make them completely her own...this sultry and engrossing version is amazingly great! "Razor (Love Me As I Am) is a hypnotic Lee masterful vocal that should have been a huge hit such as "Fever" but by the pathetically tired musical seventies this sublime version was far too great for the airwaves but remains one of Peggy's all-time seductive best performances..."When I Found You" was a big success with fans and a stirring highlight in her great seventies concerts...this wonderfully romantic song Peggy belts to great effect becomming a real stunning DIVA turn. Hauntingly brilliant is a gorgeous version of "A Song For You" show Peggy Lee made the transition from classic composers to contemporary with great success while a dramatic unreleased "It Changes" is another sublime story telling song that echo's Peggy's Grammy winning "Is That All There Is?".
A melancholy "It Takes Too Long To Learn To Live Alone" is a tender and deeply soulful song that is a slightly different version from the original release..."Superstar" shows that Peggy went deep inside of contemporary standards and made them her own and this definitive version is a fine example.
"Just For A Thrill" sets the mood for chilled Dom Perigom being another Peggy Lee classic and one of her all time finest...another wonderous performance is contained in the exhuberant and romantic "Someone Who Cares" which has fascinating tempo changes and a strong yet sensitive vocal from Peggy that also shows off her fine technique.
Two golden classics close this priceless set and never has either sounded quite so gorgeous..."The More I See You" is tender and sublime as is the sentimental and incredibly moving "I'll Be Seeing You" which perfectly end one of the very finest collections from one of the greatest singers of the 20th Century who is at her very best throughout this wonderous and sublime collection...BRAVO to Miss Peggy Lee and we love and miss you...for anyone who loves a great singer in peak form do not miss this tremendous Peggy Lee classic that is truly a timeless masterpiece...one of the greatest ever!!!
An odd couple.......2005-10-30
The first half of this twofer, from 1963, is yet another terrific collection of Lee's signature mix of jazz and R&B vocals. Just about every one of them is a keeper, although "I'm Walkin'" sounds a little forced. (After the lightning-in-a-bottle brilliance of "Fever," she probably should have quit while she was ahead on the rock and roll covers.) Also, "I'm A Woman" tries to fit a few too many words into too little space, but then who could resist a line like "I can make a dress out of a feedbag/And I can make a man out of you"? I have no complaints at all about the other ten songs; they're all wonderful.
Now, about the second album (whose title, of course, is Lee's real name), I must confess my first reaction was one of morbid curiosity. The release date (1972) and that picture of her looking like Barbra Streisand had me thinking it might be a disastrous effort at contemporary pop. Well, it is contemporary pop, but it turns out that she was pretty good at that too. It definitely shows its vintage, with most of the songs featuring mellow acoustic guitars, electric pianos, and sensitive-guy lyrics. But if you like that style and Lee's voice, they do go together surprisingly well. (The only real dud is the previously unreleased "It Changes," which really should have stayed unreleased!) The slightly countryish "Love Song" and dramatic "Razor" are miles from her usual style, but they sound great. Some of my other favorites are "It Takes Too Long To Learn To Live Alone," one of those painfully-'70s tales of suburban loneliness, and the better than you'd expect cover of the Carpenters' "Superstar." (Think about it, that bombastic chorus is perfect for an ex-big band singer.) And just to remind us that it's still the same Peggy Lee, the closing "I'll Be Seeing You" is just as stunning as you'd expect.
Two contrasting albums from 1963 and 1972.......2005-08-31
The first album here shows Peggy at the peak of her popularity in the early sixties, performing a mix of soft, romantic songs and sultry blues songs, though the dividing line between the two is not always clear-cut. The title track was a major American hit for Peggy but the strength of the album is such that it doesn't really stand out. There are many other fine songs here including The alley cat song, I'm walking, Come rain or come shine and a very impressive interpretation of Mack the knife. You're sick of that song? Listen to Peggy's version - it makes it fresh and exciting. Further classics include I'll get by, I left my heart in San Francisco (another brilliant interpretation) and A taste of honey.
The second album may be an end-of-contract release as it first appeared in 1972, the year in which Peggy left Capitol for the second and last time. Don't let that put you off - while it is not one of Peggy's strongest albums, it is well worth hearing nevertheless. This mellow, romantic album begins with Love song, which was also recorded by Olivia Newton-John. Other contemporary songs include A song for you and Superstar, both written by Leon Russell and recorded by the Carpenters. Older songs are represented by The more I see you and I'll be seeing you. A previously unreleased track, It changes, is added to the album for this release.
This twofer is worth buying for the first album alone, but I suspect that many Peggy Lee fans will (like me) enjoy both albums here.
You Can Love Me Like I am, or Good-bye.......2005-01-14
Both of the albums included here are superb. I prefer Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown North Dakota - it's the later of the two.
While Peggy Lee's singing can never be faulted, sometimes her recordings from the 60's - 70's can sound dated, kitsch and brash. That is not the case here. Practically every cut is a dream, and the orchestrations do not overwhelm with "local color" and novelty. I also want to point out that the B&W cover photgraph of Norma Deloris Egstrom is a stunner. This one's a keeper. The song Razor is sublime. Enjoy.

Album Description
Shanice, formerly Shanice Wilson, is a Grammy nominated artist with #1 singles and gold albums to her credit. Boasting a five octave voice, it's good to know she's back on the music scene after a five year hiatus. She brings a more adult flavor to this new set of sexy songs. "Every Woman Dreams", is a solid blend that ranges from funky, uptempo grooves that feed the sexual palate, to beautiful full bodied ballads.

I LIKE IT.......2007-01-09
THE FIRST 2 TO 3 SONGS ON THE CD I REALLY DIDN'T CARE ABOUT, OR SHALL I SAY I WASN'T FEELING IT. BUT THE REST I REALLY LIKE SHE GET TO THE POINT OF LETTING EVERYONE KNOW SHE LOVES HER MAN AND NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAY. I GIVE THIS ON 4 STARS

really like this one cannot wait for her to put her next album out
Shanice's Happiness.......2006-08-27
I'm not sure I can find words to describe how much I love Shanice's voice. Her voice is amazing, beautiful, rich and striking. If I was a record company owner, I would sign her under mostly any condition she wanted. That's how much I enjoy her voice. I have been a fan of hers her a very long time, and I've been anticipating her return for quite some time. "Every Woman Dreams" is her comeback album, after a 8-9 year absence from the music industry.
The first time I listened to "Every Woman Dreams", I was not impressed: I must not have given it a good enough listen because it is definitely a solid album. Anyone who listened to this LP would know that Shanice is a devoted wife and mother, and she REALLY loves her family. This album was basically written with them in mind. Shanice did write the material on this album, afterall. Although she wrote some nice words, her lyrics were at their pinnacle when Babyface wrote them. Coincidently, the song I liked least on this record was the one that was released first: the title track. I cannot get into that song. The production is almost unlistenable, Shanice sounds selfish and superficial, and the lyrics are corny. She's talking about how a woman needs to find a man who will buy her Gucci bags and diamond rings. "So Sexy" is a nice dance track. I like the production. The lyrics were alright, but this track overall is an album highlight. The most outstanding song on this album is by far "Forever Like A Rose". Most people who own this album are drawn to it, and I am no exception. Shanice sings this song with such passion and such strong emotion that whoever listens to it can just feel her and what she's attempting to convey. "Chocolate" and "Joy" are clearly about her husband, comedian Flex. "Chocolate" was an overall weak song, with weak instrumentation and corny lyrics, but "Joy" is quite the opposite. This is such a nice song, written just for the love of her life. Her voice is exercised greatly on this track. Speaking of which, Shanice covers Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You" for a second time. She first did this song on her album, "Inner Child". On her more current rendition of "Loving You", her voice sounds more mature and her adlibs are a little different. She did a nice job, again.
I enjoyed this album overall. Shanice is one of the most underrated artists in the music industry. I hope that one day she becomes just as exposed at her contemporaries, because vocally, she can give them ALL a run for their money!

Could Have Been Alot Better........2006-08-03
Im A Big Fan Of Shanice, But This Album Could Have Stayed On The Shelf. With This New Album Her Voice Has Matured Drastically More Powerful And Amazing Than Ever. But This Album Was Too Mushy For Me, Most Of The Songs We Less Than Mediocre,The Lyrics Were Tire Some, And The Production Was Wack. The Only Songs I Like Are Everywoman Dreams,So Sexy, And Take Care Of You. Shanice Didn't Use Her Voice To Her Full Capabalities On This Album, I Miss The Long Drawn Out Notes, And Belting Like She Did On Tracks Like Turndownthelights,The Way You Love Me, Etc. Also The Album Was Not Even Promoted.
A True Disappointment.......2006-04-25
I was rather disappointment in this CD. I mean, its okay! Nothing special at all. I was expecting something.... more. Since Shanice was gone for so long, I thought she was going to "bring it." Instead the entire CD was "I'm so happy I got a man." The entire CD. Song after song, was the same thing. I forced myself to listen to the entire CD, hoping that she would be able to talk about something else. So, my advise is, borrow the CD from a friend.

Soul music is alive and well on this artist's debut album. Loaded with emotive vocal demonstrations, the set kicks off with the explosively memorable ballad "Friend of Mine." From there the album levels off into mostly satisfying tracks, including "Soul of a Woman"--a lengthy ballad interlude that's not quite a complete song but nevertheless allows the Queens, New York, artist to glow through passionate verse. A contemporary R&B artist, to be sure, Price also demonstrates her ability to flow in more traditional veins with songs like "Take Me to a Dream." But her creative skills don't stop just with her fervent ability to soar, slip, and slide through her songs. She gets extra-credit points for her talents as a songwriter and producer--once for Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey, now for herself. --J.R. Reynolds

SOMETIMES LESS IS MORE !!!.......2006-10-07
Kelly has a very big voice but no idea how to use it to maximum advantage. If she'd sung half the notes she sings on this cd it would have been too many - after one listening I'm completely melismatized. People think Mariah Carey defines over-singing. Not any more. Welcome to the new undisputed world champion.
Soulful Woman.......2006-07-31
Kelly Price's debut album Soul Of A Woman surprised many as the industry's idea of a female R&B singer was breached because of her size. Not only that she was very active in the complete project with writing and or co-writing twelve of the thirteen tracks and either produced or co-produced seven of the thirteen. From the start with, "Don't Go Away (Interlude)" she incorporates a gospel feel and showcases her range with a deep and soulful edge to it. Soul Of A Woman contains both "Friend Of Mine" and the remix that was remixed by R. Kelly. "Friend Of Mine" the original version is about the deception and infidelity of her friend with her lover as "Friend Of Mine (Remix)" featuring guest vocalists R. Kelly and Ronald Isley taking shots at the male lover with a completely different feel. "Secret Love" and "You Complete Me" were both produced by 112's Daron Jones. With "Secret Love" being the upbeat of the two, this song is about finally exposing her feelings about her secret relationship. Featuring both Daron Jones and Quinnes Parker (of 112) is a great collaboration on "You Complete Me" for a loving duet with the trio as the masculine vocals gives this LP more emotions. "Don't Say Goodbye" is a mid-tempo song with varied kicks and fast paced highs as her vocals are layered perfectly for fuller sound. Continuing on the same tempo with a slight dance swing is "Kiss Test". On this pop quiz, Kelly definitely deserves an A+. The title track was merely a filler with the Tony! Toni! Tone! sample. With lyrics such as the following "...I need a healing for my soul..." on "Soul of A Woman (Interlude)" delivers the pain, hurt and feelings that is strong as the other songs found on this album. Kelly compares her love to another woman on "Her" as Kelly's vocals win the battle. "Your Love" featuring Lil' Cease isn't strong enough to be a single, but keeps you in tuned with the graceful mid-tempo soul tune. Missing only a bottom beat, the climatic epic "Take Me To A Dream" captures memories that lives within. Incorporating her gospel roots there's "Lord Of All" that places you on the pew bright and early Sunday morning. Kelly Price's Soul Of A Woman is a complete package that has been missing in any solo female R&B artist with her soulful debut.
Evolution........2006-01-28
In 1993, Kelly Price was discovered by Mariah Carey and sang background for her and other major artists such as R. Kelly, Brian McKnight, 112, Montell Jordan and was sought after by Ronald Isley (a.k.a. "Mr. Biggs") in 1997. She later signed to his label, T-Neck Records that same year and released one powerhouse of a debut album the following year. Not only did she sing; (my badd!!) SAAAAAAANG the mess out of this album, but she added depth to it by writing and producing most of the songs presented. She is a true talent and her spirit evokes passion, presence and emotion throughout every song. The introduction of this work of art is an interlude song called, "Don't Go Away," which features a moving gospel jazz piano & organ performance by producer Alvin West and Kelly's stirring standout vocalise just indicates that this album has the cohesiveness to take you on a series of emotional high's. The album's lead single, "Friend of Mine," which was produced by Stevie J, tells the story of betrayal by a best friend with her lover. Releasing this single was a very positive move for the label, as this single alone propelled "Soul of A Woman" quickly into gold status during its first month after hitting the stores. This seasoned debut for Kelly Price included other smashes like "Secret Love," the 2nd single, (produced by 112's Daron Jones) the smoothly seductive "Don't Say Goodbye," "Kiss Test," the duet with Daron in "You Complete Me," "Her," the silky ballad, "Take Me To A Dream," the inspirational "Lord of All," and the most popular recording in the set, "Friend of Mine [Remix]," featuring R. Kelly & Ronald Isley. The album thrives on originality, precision and creativity. Kelly would follow up with other promising albums such as, "Mirror, Mirror," "Priceless," and she hit big in the Tyler Perry stage play, "Why Did I Get Married?" (a.k.a. "He Proposed") in 2004. Also, after losing her mother-in-law to breast cancer, she has become a die-hard supporter for retrieving breast cancer research. A dazzling career for a dazzling artist and an even more dazzling person. Jus' give us one more album, Kelly!! We're waitin' patiently!!!!
Middel school music.......2005-04-05
I loved this album in middel school! Secret Love and its remix made me buy the album and after that I was hooked, the only song i didn't care for we will just blame on lil' Cease or whatever his name was. Take me to a dream is my champion cut from this album, and the studio work she put into the album makes it truely personel, and her voice is so ruch and full. The titel track is another stand out cut that alot of people can probably relate alot to..about that special person in your life that you sometimes let down. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys soul aand r&b..I miss the times of these albums..before Ciara and Lil Jon(no disrespect).
Soul of a woman is an excellent debut that still is great.......2005-02-04
Kelly Price came out with Friend of Mine and everyone was wondering who this girl is. Her debut is great from start to finish. Kelly Price is probably the closest to the next Aretha we are gonna get. R&B at its best filled with joy, pain, and passion. Price is sassy enough to carry the he done me wrong tunes but passionate to sing the desperate love songs. Kelly Price is a musical treasure and everyone should listen to the CD.
Favorites: Friend of Mine, Secret Love, Don't say Goodbye(best song on album), Her, You complete me, Friend of Mine remix.

A less famous Aretha!.......2007-01-10
Shirley Brown can sing! I had never heard of her, but thought I would give her a try, since I really like 70's soul music, and I was definitely NOT disappointed. Ms. Brown sounds like a souped-up Aretha Franklin. If anything, her vocal sound is a bit cleaner and more "bel canto" than the great Aretha. Granted, the songs on this album can't compare to the Motown classics in the Franklin songbook, but this album is really nice.
shirley, I need you tonight.......2006-09-02
this is one of the most beautiful soul albums I've ever listened to... shirley's voice is incredible... every single song is a true pearl...
A Timeless Classic.......2000-08-05
This is one of those great albums which sound ever-green. All the songs on the album are great. "Woman to Woman" is perhaps the best-known number on the album, but other memorable offerings include "It Ain't No Fun", "As Long As You Love Me," and "Passion". I truly believe that one has only to listen once to this album to become a Shirley Brown fan.

In the 1970s, Natalie Cole made a spectacular debut. And, after a number of personal and professional setbacks in the '80s, she bounced back with her splendid 1991 rendition of her daddy's hit, "Unforgettable," where she electronically performed a "duet" with her father. This CD reunites Cole with producer by Tommy LiPuma, who produced "Unforgettable" and was the hit maker behind George Benson and Diana Krall. This collection is a classic blend of jazz-inflected pop, with the best and the brightest in the business. Backed by a plethora of stars, including trumpeter Roy Hargrove, bassist Christian McBride, pianist Joe Sample, and drummer Lewis Nash, Cole's lithe, Ella Fitzgerald-tinged vocals are showcased in a number pleasing settings. Whether it's the Brazilian sound of Sergio Mendes's "So Many Stars," the scat-happy "My Baby Just Cares for Me," or the big band swing of "It's Crazy" and "Soon," courtesy of the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, Cole projects her aura on these songs once sung by Sarah Vaughan, Barbra Streisand, Nina Simone, and Dinah Washington. Natalie Cole is a jazzy soul survivor in the literal sense of the term, and this recording represents her finest hour. --Eugene Holley Jr.

"It Is That Part That Is Learning To Turn The Lemons Into Champagne And Caviar".......2006-10-14
"My journey through life has rarely been a boring one and I must say I have always had a rather interesting appetite when it comes to both life and the music it inspires. A few things I have learned along the way: When life gives you candy, savor every moment . . . When life gives you lemons, you'd better learn how to make lemonade! I have put together a selection of songs that reflect a particular part of me - the part that has loved and lost and kept on loving in spite of it. It is that part that is learning to turn the lemons into champagne and caviar." ~ Natalie Cole ~
I've been a Natalie Cole fan as far back as I can remember and have collected most of her remarkable works of art that really impressed me, "Stardust," "Unforgettable With Love," "Take A Look," "Holly & Ivy," "Anthology," "Everlasting," "I've Got Love On My Mind" and this lovely CD "Ask A Woman Who Knows," which is filled with the most beautiful songs ever recorded. I've had this since it first came out and never fails to listen to the beauty of this recording every now and then and enjoy every minute of it. The next best thing to enjoy her artistry is watching her perform live in concert, which I did in August of 2005 at the Hollywood Bowl. She's not only a great vocalist but also a total performer and she has an absolutely terrific stage presence.
My number one choice is a charming song composed by Bossa Nova icon Sergio Mendes and the creative husband-and-wife-songwriting-pair Alan and Marilyn Bergman, "So Many Stars." It starts off with a dreamy dramatic effect that Rob Mounsey sublimely arranged. Ms. Cole sings it radiantly with her flawless phrasing and talking about the arrangement - it is so beautiful! I listen to it repeatedly before listening to the rest of the tracks (a friend of mine calls it "The Rebecca Style of Listening").
"The wind is filled with songs
So many songs
Which one is mine?
One must be right for me
Which song of all the songs?
When there's a song for every star
And there are oh so many stars
So many stars."
Another stunner is a gem of a song by Jimmy Dorsey and Paul Madeira "I'm Glad There Is You." Its arrangement by Alan Broadbent is a testament that he's not only a fine pianist but also a great arranger and orchestrator.
Michael Franks' "Tell Me All About It" is one of my highlights and another Rob Mounsey arrangement with a samba flavor.
I also love her cover on "Soon," one of Gershwin Brothers musical treasures but seldom recorded. The legendary jazz diva Ella Fitzgerald had recorded it and so with Michael Feinstein, who himself a lover of Gershwin music. You'll enjoy its jazzy and upbeat arrangement by John Clayton with the fabulous Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, along with Jeff Hamilton, and the regular musicians Joe Sample, Rob Mounsey, Russell Malone and Larry Bunker.
The duet with Diana Krall "Better Than Anything" by Bill Loughborough and David Wheat is a delight to listen to. These two divas' awesome voices blend so well and validate their dedication and enthusiasm in singing.
One thing I love about Natalie Cole's liner notes is that they are all personally written with heartfelt thoughts and praises to our Lord, Jesus Christ and she ended it with...
"Lastly and most important: Thank you to my creator, my heavenly Father, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is my all in all, and it is through Him that I can do all things. I am so grateful for His many blessings. Enjoy . . . with love, Natalie Cole."
My overall rating is not five but ten stars. A classy CD to add to your collection. Very, very highly recommended.
She's still got the touch. . . ........2006-09-17
Unlike the flaccid 1996 "Stardust" (another album of standards which seemed to run out of steam), "Ask A Woman Who Knows" is a seamless, heartfelt continuation of the kind of pop-jazz so fondly associated with her father. "Ask A Woman" finds a singer still in good voice! She's as comfortable with torch songs (e.g., the title track, "I Told You So," "I Haven't Got Anything Better to Do" and an airy version of Sarah Vaughn's "So Many Stars") as she is tossing off playful uptempo tracks like the brilliant bossa nova version of Michael Frank's "Tell Me All About It" and the Ella Fitzgerald-inspired "It's Crazy." That said, her voice has also taken on a more nasal quality than was previously evident in her glory days during the 1970's. With repeated listenings, this quality can sometimes grate on the ears.
Nevertheless, at this stage in her career, Natalie Cole has virtually nothing left to prove, having repeatedly demonstrated considerable versatility, skill and talent (Cole is, by the way, one of those rare vocalists who sounds even better live than on record). What better way to celebrate the approaching twilight of her career with mature, age-appropriate music that continues to stand the test of time? . . .
The emergence of maturity, class & style.......2005-10-23
A disclaimer: I WAS NEVER A NATALIE COLE FAN. Accept for very few songs, I usually found her music to be trite and poorly produced. Natalie Cole is a NATURALLY AWESOME talent that was burdened by 2nd-rate songs, and hacked by inept producers and music capitalists. However, in spite of all that...
THE "ASK A WOMAN" CD IS AN ABSOLUTE GEM!! Rob Mounsey's orchestral and rhythm arrangements seamlessly weave big band, swing, and light jazz into up-tempo songs and ballads. Ms. Cole's voice is complemented by these arrangements as another pure orchestral instrument itself. And the combination is magic: "I Haven't Got Anything Better", "Calling You"(!), "Tell Me About It", "Music That Makes me Dance", "I Told You So". And there's not a music clunker on the entire cd.
"Ask A Woman" is a much-needed depature from the mindless pop songs Natalie sang in the 80's. After being mishandled, mis-categorized and mass produced for far too long, "Ask A Woman" is the true emergence of artistic maturity, class and style that is so deserving for the vocal talent and caliber of Natalie Cole. In her own right, Ms. Cole has the classic voice of an old-school, first rate crooner. And regardless of commercial appeal, crooning is what she should have been doing all along. Like father, like daughter: that's the niche! And all of us are very fortunate to see (and hear) her finally claim it!
I cannot believe that I would ever get this psyched about a Natalie Cole cd. Early on, I bought two copies; one each for my home and office. Since then I've purchased several more as gifts for friends. (And by the way, Cole's "Stardust" cd is a worthy runner-up!!)
I wonder if devout Natalie Cole fans will cross-over with her singing a different genre. Regardless, she definitely deserves a new fan base.
HAVING FUN NATALIE COLE'S WAY.......2005-08-27
Natalie Cole has been accused many times of "covering" songs her dad Nat King Cole made famous - but she does have a great voice of her own and she proves it here. These are songs from her own heart. From the start of "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" until "My Baby Just Cares For Me", Natalie has her "way" with us Natalie sings with "gusto". When a song needs the caressing of a phrase her voice lowers to the needed whispered pitch. Yet she can just as well put a note "to the back of the room" as she belts out a great phrase. Natalie teams with Diana Krall in the duet "Better Than Anything", and it is better than anything I have heard lately. When listening to this CD, I could not help but believe Natalie was having the time of her life. I highly recommend this CD.
Like fine wine -- getting better with age!.......2005-01-11
An old friend emailed me today to say that, at that very moment, her husband was listening to this version of "The Music That Makes Me Dance" --- my favorite performance of an almost forgotten Bob Merrill song.
And who was Bob, you ask? Well Merrill wrote musicals that deserved to succeed (such as "Take Me Along" Jackie Gleason, Walter Pigeon) plus some fifties 'gimmick' songs like "How Much is that Doggie in the Window? . . . and, eventually, such magnificences as "People" (with Jule Styne). Where was I? Oh yes, Natalie Cole.
To my ears, this beautiful woman is best songstress since Ella Fitzgerald, who as everyone-should-know-by-now was the female equivalent to Frank Sinatra -- the greatest-ever interpreters of the Great American Song Book.
What would Nat Cole say of this album? I close my eyes and see Nat nodding in agreement, that his daughter's voice is even more beautiful, athletic and expressive than his own.
Nat was of course a jazz giant who played better piano than practically anyone (other than Oscar and Bill). But I believe in my heart he would agree his little girl turned out to be an even better singer.
Some specifics about this wonderful album, Natalie's "best yet" (and there've been three great ones before this). For those who may still care "Who wrote that song?" this album could have used some liner notes! (So here are mine.)
1. "I Haven't Got Anything Better to Do" - from Lee Pockriss & Paul Vance, who wrote some popular hits in the 50s including "Catch a Falling Star" (first Number 1 for Perry Como) plus bits of fluff like "Johnny Angel" (for Shelly Fabares) and the much better "My Little Corner of the World." (Oh yes, and who could forget their "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini"?) Well the Pockriss/Vance `estate' has waited four decades for someone of Natalie's magnitude to finally do justice to this previously uncovered gem. Strong melody, great lyrics!
2. "Tell Me All About It" - Pretty Bossa Nova tune; what follows, however, is more substantial:
3. "Ask a Woman Who Knows" - Title track written by Vic Abrams. (Who is/was Vic? No list of songwriters up to 1995 lists him!) Talk about a 'Standard-Just-Waiting-to-Happen.'
4. "It's Crazy" - Co-written by comedian Timmie Rogers---a childhood friend of Nat Cole's in the 1930s who talked Earl "Fatha" Hines' band arranger (Cecil Irvwin) into parting with a copy of an arrangement (of Hine's theme song "Rosetta") which Rogers handed over to his ever-grateful, teenaged friend "Nathaniel Coles" (correct, Coles with an `s'). It's so fitting that Nat's daughter chooses to introduce this undiscovered gem from 1926 to a 21st Century audience. The brass arrangement here by John Clayton is utterly new and fresh---unlike anything you've heard before.
5. "You're Mine You" - Another 'Should-Have-Been-a-Standard' written by Johnny (Body & Soul) Green and a great 1930s lyricist, Edward Heyman.
6. "So Many Stars" - A Brazilian 60s hit for Sergio Mendes and the Bergmans (Alan and Marilyn); this treasure never received better treatment. If you're young, and you've never heard this one before, well---how I envy you!
7. "I Told You So" - Amazing! Natalie introduces yet another 'standard-waiting-in-the-wings.' (Who is composer Duncan Lamont? He's gifted, that's for sure!) Six years after Sinatra's passing, who but Natalie could have done this song so well?
8. "Soon" - I Love a Gershwin tune, how about you? And who but Natalie, to pluck from relative obscurity this seldom-played gem.
9. "I'm Glad There Is You" - A haunting Jimmy Dorsey/Paul Madeira Latin-influenced ballad from 1941--- ignored by everyone since the fifties. (Old-timers will immediately recognize this beautiful tune.) This time the orchestra is arranged by the (almost) incomparable Alan Broadbent. (If Sinatra were still with us, he'd be doing albums with Alan.)
10. "Better Than Anything" - A refreshingly new jazz waltz devoted to, of all things-`Women Shopping.' Guest Diana Krall seems in perfect agreement that spending money is the best thing in life ("better than honey on bread, better than breakfast in bed"----lyrics Cole Porter could have written and would have loved).
11. "The Music That Makes Me Dance" - Written by the "People" people---Jule Styne and Bob Merrill (for 1964's "Funny Girl").
12. "Calling You" - The saddest, most melancholy song here: Alas, a forgettable melody by someone named Robert Telson: I defy you to hum this tune---no matter how many times you play it! (The only weak link on the entire album.)
13. "My Baby Just Cares For Me" - The only standard here whose title is immediately recognizable----from Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn (introduced in long-ago 1930 by Eddie Cantor). A playful arrangement with deep, swinging syncopation --- from great (young) musicians who would have been loved by Nat and Frank, and Ella - the only singers who could have delivered these songs so well as 'Nat's little girl.' To borrow from my favorite lyric here:
"I know she's around, when the sky and the ground started ringing
I know that she's here by the thunder I hear in advance!
Her words, and her words alone, are the words that can start my heart singing
And hers is the only music that makes me dance!"

Anchored by a greasy wah-wah guitar and pushed along by a no-nonsense, finger-wagging attitude, "Heard It All Before" is the sort of scorned-woman anthem that even dawgs can dig. Credit Macy Gray protégé Sunshine Anderson, who on her debut injects R&B with gritty sass and breathes some old soul life into the game. With a slurred, slightly off-key voice that recalls Mary J Blige, Anderson unleashes little soap operas in which good women are in search of good men, and how those men ultimately fail them. In true soul-mama style, Anderson is at her fiercest when she is at her most rejected, and that determination elevates even some of the iffier material here into triumph. --Amy Linden

Slept On Lovely.......2006-08-26
Sunshine Anderson was definitely slept on her album. She had great songs with meaningful lyrics, good production, but she lacked promotion. I think if she was marketed better she would've pushed more units. Standout tracks are " Where Have You Been", "Crazy Love", "Lunch or Dinner", and "Your Woman". Sunshine has lots of soul, which is lacking in the industry right now all she needs is good people behind her and her career will certainly take off. Please don't count Sunshine out.

Hip-Hop-Soul.......2004-06-13
I read all the reviews, and nobody mentioned that is has a Hip-Hop Soul vibe to it. What people fail realize on this review messageboard is that the music industry is seriously lacking Hip-Hop-Soul and Hip-Hop as a whole. See Mike City (the producer of this Sunshine album) is getting slept on lovely =(
Here's the list of Hip Hop Soul albums of lately that I'm feeling:
1/2. Carl Thomas - "Emotional" (2000)
1. Amerie - "All I Have" (2002)
2. Sunshine Anderson - "Your Woman" (2000/2001)
3. Donell Jones - "My Heart" (1996)
4. Usher - self-titled debut (1994) and 8701 (2001); the Confessions CD should go take a nap.
5. Yvette Michele - "My Dream" (1997)
6. Soul For Real - "For Life" (1996) and "Candy Rain" (1994/1995)
7. Mary J. Blige - "Whats The 411" (1992), "My Life" (1994),
"Mary" (1999) [good comeback CD for her]
8. Faith Evans - "Faithfully" (2001) [good comeback CD for her career], "Faith" (1995) and NOT kEEP THE FAITH..THAT WAS HER WORSE CD (even though she had a couple of joints on it)
9. Davina - "Best of Both Worlds" (1998)
10. Leschea - "Rhythm & Beats" (1997)
11. the first Jill Scott CD (1999)
12. Angie Stone's 2001 "Mahogany Soul" CD
13. Frankie - "My Heart Belongs To You" (1997) [before Musiq Soulchild, there was Frankie...he told the Al B Sure vibe to the neosoul/hip-hop soul level - reminds you of a younger version of Musiq]
14. J. Lo - "That Was Me..Then" (2002) [everybody hates J Lo but this is her best CD and it was a Hip Hop Soul CD cuz she worked with mad NY producers] - I don't judge people's music and their personal life the same way so go figure.
15. Veronica Vasquez - "V..As In Veronica" (1995) and "Rise" (1997) [she got slept on crazily!!! Sounds like J Lo with vocal training -- she should be eating on that Boricua diva soul plate, not J Lo even though J Lo's last CD was bangin]
16. J. Quest - "The Quest Is On" (1995) [I'm trying to figure out if Frankie J. and J. Quest are the same artists with different names...because they are both Latino and sound the same when singing].
Peace \/
