Not Too Bad,.......2006-08-26
The Fisrt cd is alot better than this one, but this one is still okay. I only Liked one song on this disc and it is. Track 4. Will The Circle Be Unbroken/I'll Fly Away/ Jesus Loves Me. Don't get me wrong the music is beautiful, but i think the first one is alot better.
Definately A Keeper CD.......2005-01-29
Awesome.... Again! Power In The Blood, such a blessing! I've had this cd since the release date... Still one I play often!
My personal favorite.......2003-07-05
A beautiful CD, and my personal favorite. This CD was a tremendous comfort to me and my family after the loss of my brother. We had selections played at his services that held special meaning for us, and made his passing easier to accept. Beautiful, Soothing, Comforting, Worshipful.
Superb!.......2002-09-16
Now this is what a country gospel album should sound like! Excellent. You'll hear no complaints from me.
absolutely wonderful!.......2001-09-28

What's not to love about a Mahalia Jackson CD?.........2005-04-23
I bought this CD and Volume I back in 2002. My mother loved Mahalia Jackson, so I grew up listening to her in vinyl round the clock it seemed. I actually thought I couldn't stand to hear another Mahalia Jackson song as long as I lived. But as an adult, I found myself humming some of the songs my mother had played over and over, and one day I realized I missed Mahalia's voice. When I bought these collections of hers, I actually went searching specifically for Mahalia Jackson music. Imagine my mother's surprise when I told her I had Mahalia Jackson blasting in my house the way she'd done when I was growing up! :-) There are still more Mahalia Jackson songs that I'm looking for that, in all the songs on these collections, weren't included. That's my only disappointment with these. But the quality of the recordings -- classic Mahalia Jackson!
Ebenezer Baptist Church's Mother Mildred's Kid's Affirmation.......2005-01-15
There is an unusual opportunity with amazon.com to preview the audio adaptation of the beautiful contralto voices that're accompanied unbelievably: Professionally-named "Mahalia Jackson", whose followings include the missing-in-action true sources of the marching music that helped the 20th Century still-slaves overcome. If your families sang aloud as fearlessly as mine did, then you want to experience these. You can order "Mahalia Jackson's" inspirational sharings to hear whenever you awaken feeling low. Or, you can listen to the samples before checking if there's another of "Mahalia Jackson's Gospels, Spirituals, &Hymns" available online to hear at least a tiny trace: one of my favorites is "Martin, Luther and John." The music is so fabulous: You can substitute the names of your missing-in-action loved ones to cheer you until they're alive with you like when we'd been here only a couple of winks. Thanks, www.amazon.com.
From, "(&Svenie)" P.S. "I'll Be Down To Get You With A Taxi, Honey" is also a neat tune for these times. But, be cautious not to promise what you can't deliver, 'cause we know somebody who did sing that only later to endure giving a ride to her teacher's dog which had fleas on those automatically dropped magnets...

WONDERFUL CD-POWERFUL VOICES.......2001-08-29
THIS CD IS MARVELOUS!!! TO HAVE 2 POWERFUL VOICES(JONATHAN PIERCE, GUY PENROD) IN THE SAME GROUP SAYS WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT BILL GAITHER. THIS MAN IS AMAZING, TO BE ABLE TO FIND SUCH TALENTS. I LOVE ALL THE SONGS. JONATHAN PIERCE ON HIS SOLO'S KNOWS WHEN TO BE VERY POWERFUL AND WHEN TO SILENT HIS BEAUTIFUL VOICE TO BLEND WITH THE OTHER VOICES. WHEW, WHAT AN AMAZING TALENT!!! I RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE TO BUY THIS ALBUM...
Southern Classics Vol. II.......2000-07-24
This continues the recording of classics with the "Gaither Touch" that the first volume started. The best cuts are: Count On Me ( A powerful song). Bill's solo starts the song off more mellow and personal and then Guy Penrod's solo cranks it up with a soulful side that he hadn't shown on previous performances. He puts as much power, emotion, and kick in it as Michael Bolton could do, (but not to the point of excess.) The Old Rugged Cross Made The Difference is also a powerful cut with Penrod once again giving it all he has, and is a great arrangement. Farther Along is a good, new arrangement of the classic hymn, giving Jonathan Pierce a shot at the high and powerful type of solo. Sweeter As The Days Go By is a nice arrangement of the song that kicks, and gives Penrod a chance to adlib on a descant toward the end. They also update Search Me Lord with a modern arrangement. This, as I recall, was the first CD of their's that started the move toward integrating a country style into their material on several songs, but there is still the Inspirational, and Black Gospel material on here that they've previously been known for, as well.
SOUTHERN CLASICS PRETTY GOOD.......2000-03-07
I THINK SOUTHERN CLASICS WAS A VERY GOOD CD. I WOULD RECOMEND TRACKS 1,4,AND 11. I BELIEVE THEY ARE THE MOST POWERFULL.A MUST FOR ANY GVB FAN.
More of the excellent quality from the Vocal Band.......1999-09-15
I am a "Vocal Band" fan and I listen to their music all the time. This album is just more of their excellent talents and sound. You can really feel the presence of the Lord when you listen to their music
Powerful songs with meaningful messages.......1998-08-24
Perhaps one of the best of the Gaither Vocal Band recordings. If you appreciate the Gaither Vocal Band you will love this CD. I paid more for the recording in a retail store and had to wait two (2) weeks. The Amazon price represents a substantial savings.

Customer Reviews:
It's easy, see, I can sing a song all day........2007-01-15
This CD features recordings that Elvis made in January, 1957. Tapes featuring the unedited recording sessions from January 13 & 19 were found in the late 1980s. These tapes happened to be in binaural (two track) stereo, with Elvis in the left speaker and everyone else in the right speaker. It's a very primitive form of stereo, but it's still fun to hear Elvis isolated from the rest of the band. The bulk of this CD features alternate takes from these recording sessions. These are very interesting, as you can hear what went on at the recording session. Some comments made before and after the songs are included. You can also hear mistakes made by Elvis, as he sings the wrong lyric or busts out laughing (or laughs BECAUSE he sang the wrong lyric). Elvis even hits a bad note on "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" (it even happens to the best singers). I should point out that "Mean Woman Blues" take 14 is not an alternate take, but is in fact the master take that was used on the Loving You album way back in 1957 (but this is, of course, the first time is was released in stereo). There were five songs recorded during these sessions for which no binaural tapes could be located. So, these five songs close out the CD in their original mono master take versions. This is a great CD which should appeal to any Elvis fan.
B E U T I F U L STEREO SOUND.......1999-03-15
Mayby I can't add to what the first review said, but, thiscd is great. even on cassette tape , but, I borrpowed my frinds cd and words fail me how I STARTED CRYING playing the cd. Now if only ELVIS'S YES MEN HAD TOLD HIM TO STOP EATING ALL THAT FATTENING FOOD WE WOULD STILL HAVE H I M AROUND !!!!!
This Is Stereo At It's Earliest, A Definite Headphone Moment.......1998-08-24
This CD will appeal to those who have an interest in very early stereo recordings of rock and roll. The following quote from the CD pamphlet explains it better than I could:
"A couple of years before the advent of the stereo disc in mid-1958, major record companies had been experimenting with stereophonic recording of classical music (often referred to then as 'binaural'). In the popular-music sphere, however, state-of-the-art studios were using the new Ampex 2-track tape recorders for making binaural tapes for other purposes. The engineers would place, say, the vocalist or soloist on one track and the backing band on the other; this enabled further engineering and mixing to produce the final mono master after the performers had left. In the earliest days--as in the case of these Elvis sessions--the binaural machine was run only as a safety copy. Although these 2-track tapes were never intended for stereophonic release thirty-odd years ago, I have very carefully prepared them for stereo enjoyment utilizing techniques that I hope are compatible with the aims of the original recording team and artist. The quality and clarity of these originals certainly belie their age and permit and exciting stereo image by any standard--a tribute indeed to the Radio Recorders engineers. The discovery of these 2-track masters is nothing short of a miracle. The tape boxes have "erase" clearly written on the master log sheets. They are the only ones know to exist from the pre-stereo era".
Note: the last 5 tracks (16-20) are in mono and the CD states this.
We are very fortunate that Elvis signed up with RCA. Had he not, it could have been another five years before we heard him in stereo and who knows what would have happened to the master tapes from many lesser known record companies that went out of business in the sixties.

For Nostalgia Purposes Only.......2007-04-03
I have Vol. 1 of the Live At Azusa, and it certainly takes me back to childhood in those "store front churches" that I started out at. However, many of these songs that we sang "back then" are not scriptually based. Most of these type of songs are called "feel good" songs, because, the writers wrote them based on how they felt, and not necessarily on their knowledge of the Word of God, and what God say's about what you are going through. Many people forget that, and when you tell them this, they get highly upset and an attitude. But you have to remember, our "ancestors" didn't read the bible; the slaves didn't know how to read, so, they had "church" based on how loud the drums were played and how it made them "move and feel" and the lyrics for many of these songs were based purely on how you felt, when the word of God tells us to Walk by Faith (the word), and not by sight (your feelings.) Again, based on how good Vol. 1 made me "feel" - if you are into nostalgic gospel, then, you will enjoy this Vol. 2 as well. But, remember, "Jesus himself said, "be careful how you hear." Meaning, be careful what you allow into your eargate, because, what you listen to, will affect your faith in a positive or negative way - Take heed therefore how ye hear (Luke 8:18)

Customer Reviews:
Great Album - but it is Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers.......2006-03-09
The reviewer below is correct that this appears to be an excellent album of tremendous performances of Black Gospel from the classic period of Black Gospel, well worth having. All you have to do is listen to the recorded samples for proof of that.
However, the recorded samples also reveal that it is the unmistakeable voice of Sam Cooke singing lead for the Soul Stirrers on "Jesus, I'll Never Forget", and not his role model, R.H. Harris. According to the liner notes on my 30+ year old vinyl copy of "The Gospel Soul of Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers, Vol. I", Specialty SPS 2116, Cooke joined the Soul Stirrers in 1951, and "Forget" was not recorded till March 2, 1954, WITH Cooke singing lead.
R.H. Harris DOES seem to appear on this album - singing lead for the Christland Singers on "Sell Out to the Master". You can see how Cooke patterned himself after Harris, who uses the same little half-yodeled ornamentation on "Sell Out" that Cooke would later use with the Soul Stirrers and on his pop hits like "You send Me". But these are two different voices. Listen for yourself to the samples of "Forget" and "Sell Out" above, and compare them with samples from any Sam Cooke collection. Both the similarities and the differences should be clear.
If reissues like "Jubilation, Vol. 2" had proper liner notes (Compare the awesome Tony Heilbut collections "When Gospel was Gospel" on Shanachie, or the seminal "The Gospel Sound" on Columbia) then confusion like this would be avoided.
Solid Gospel Intro.......2001-01-24
This CD is a very solid intro to gospel recorded in the "Golden Age" - 1940's and 1950's. The recording quality is uneven, but the performances are outstanding. Many of gospel's most famous groups are represented - The Soul Stirrers, Majalia Jackson, The Staple Singers and many more. Jackson is represented by "How I Got Over," her biggest hit on Apollo Records before she was signed by Columbia (and her style subdued to suit the mass-market) "Jesus, I'll Never Forget" highlights the incredible harmonizing of the Soul Stirrers, with R.H. Harris as lead vocalist. (Harris, of course, was later replaced by Sam Cooke who would go on to fame as a solo pop and soul artist) If nothing else, buy the disc for the live version of "Walk Around Heaven All Day" by the Caravans - Albertina Walker's voice is absolutely unworldly. Overall, this is a great introduction to a wide variety of groups and styles.
