5 out of 5 stars Best Newsboys album.......2007-06-10

He Reigns is a "best of" worship song collection, culling songs primarily from the Adoration and Devotion albums, and a couple from Thrive, and LoveLibertyDisco. I am not a big fan of worship music (outside of church), as I find most rather boring to listen to in the car, but He Reigns is a cut waaaay above the rest! Every song is fantastic, and will move you to worship our Lord. I am a casual fan of the Newsboys. I don't like every song they do, but the ones I like, I really like. I also own Shine, but this album even outshines it.

5 out of 5 stars Totally pleased.......2007-05-17

This CD is everything I hoped it would be. I purchased it for the single "In Christ Alone," which is awesome. But the entire CD is worth playing over and over again.

The Newsboys rock as they sing to God in He Reigns!

Every song just makes your hands clap and feet tap.

Beautiful music, great group of singers, some of the best on the market, I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Indie rock is doing well and in good hands.......2007-03-26

I had the opportunity of seeing Annuals playing live when they opened for The Dears in Orlando earlier in 2006. The musical brainchild of Adam Baker, "Be He Me" is also an album loaded with emotions: with songs titled "Bother", "Mother" and "Father" (some of the best in the album, arguably), it is amazing such musical and lyrical depth will come not an old sage, but from someone who recently turned 20.

Their music is as compelling as their live stage presence, bringing to mind the likes of Arcade Fire, Flaming Lips and Broken Social Scene, with whom they are often compared. With this as their debut album and a lineup of bandmembers (currently six) none of whom exceed 22, we know one thing for sure: indie rock is doing well and in good hands.

3 out of 5 stars More emotional creative indie rock for the mid-oughts.......2007-03-23

I haven't heard The Annuals live, I haven't read press about them, I don't know anything about them, but somehow I ended up with this "Be He Me" record. I love approaching music that way.

Anyway. Look, some folks see great harm in comparing a band to other bands, but really it's still probably the best way for a newcomer to get their bearings and decide whether they might be interested. So, here I go... I hear the oft-mentioned Arcade Fire similarities, the emotional sometimes shouty vocals and changes in dynamics, I hear a little of the Animal Collective weirdness (the album challenges your patience with almost 2 minutes of burbly noise to start the 1st song off before the big rock songlet "Brother" kicks in), I hear a bit of Van Dyke Parks/Beach Boys inventiveness (I don't give a cr*p what anyone says, I see the fact that indie bands are willing to waltz as a good thing). "Carry Around" has a kind of Modest Mouse sprinkled w/ '70s funk/lounge thing. I might guess that this is a young band that cut their teeth on both U2 and Neutral Milk Hotel. (Heck, the last 20 seconds of "Bleary-Eyed" sound like an outtake from "Unforgettable Fire").

I feel like the album drags towards the end with two longish (and longing) tracks that seem less interesting and focused than the rest of the album.

Having said all that, I applaud these Annuals for their creativity. While this album is a little bit lacking in great melodic ideas, it's got great energy and here's hoping they'll keep recording and growing.

5 out of 5 stars excellent indie album.......2007-01-21

This album could be one of 2006's best releases. It's intricate, broad, evocative musical strokes are fantastic. These guys are one of the better groups in the modern legion of indie rock. this album is definitely worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite of 2006.......2007-01-10

I came upon Annuals when they opened for Tapes n Tapes in October. Not having heard anything from this band, I was struck by how good they were live, and how easy it was to groove to their then unknown tunes. I purchased Be He Me the following day and played it throughout the remainder of the year, each listening revealing greater depths of sound and meaning. You can hear influences as diverse as The Beach Boys, the Cure, Pink Floyd, Broken Social Scene - yet Annuals never sound derivative, as each track is uniquely crafted and performed. The inclusion of strings, keyboards, and various electronics (to your standard guitar, bass and drums), along with engaging lyrics and super catchy melodies, makes for a truly remarkable debut.

5 out of 5 stars My love for Annuals .......2007-01-10

Joyous, evocative, inspiring is the sound of this album and the way it can make someone feel. Incredibly talented young adults (20-ish years of age)this band is going places. I always knew they would.

5 out of 5 stars In These Metal Days.......2007-06-11

With this album, Brian Eno left behind pop songwriting to embark upon his "ambient music" period. B&AS makes a wonderful farewell to pop music and stands as his most complete pop album. Although the structure of the original album has been lost with the move to CD format, it is worth remembering that the first 5 songs appeared on side 1 of the album and the remainder on side 2. Viewed from this perspective, it is tempting to relate the title to the album structure: side 1 is wild and manic, while side 2 is calm and melodic. There are parallels in the number of songs and the number of instrumentals. Although Eno never considered hiself a musician, his underrated singing is put to great use on this album, and his songwriting skill is clearly in evidence. Others have given detailed descriptions of the songs, so I will restrict myself to the highlights: the typical lyrical silliness of "Backwater," hearing Kurt Schwitters's infamous "Ur Sonata" -- and more silly lyrics -- on "Kurt's Rejoinder" (presaging Eno's found music experiments of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts") and the placid beauty of "Spider and I."

Fans of Eno's ambient music will find much to like here and fans who come by way of Roxy Music and/or "Here Come the Warm Jets" will find a quieter, more thoughful and complex album in "Before and After Science." This is music that rewards repeated listening and which, nearly 30 years after its debut, still seems timely and interesting.

4 out of 5 stars four and one half stars........2007-02-25

quirky funk (no one receiving), fingerpoppin' pop (backwater), early leanings toward ambient sounds (energy fools the magician and through hollow lands), and a generous helping of gorgeous slow-tempo numbers have this album from 1977 jumping all over the place, which is fine with me. this is creative music that is easily accessible, completely listenable. "another green world" seems to be the eno album from his song-based (pre-ambient) period that most people latch onto as his masterpiece, but i would argue that "before and after science" gives that outstanding lp a run for its money. great art-rock. highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A diamond in the rough of transition.......2006-06-03

Most reviewers have pointed out the presence of upbeat songs, ethereal lyrical explorations, and all out ambience on this album, and it's definitely full of gorgeous examples of all three. Although this is often classified as a transitional album because it houses so many varieties of songs, I think they work stunningly well together; While his first two solo albums are truly wonderful, the constant up-tempo pace was a bit relentless. "Another Green World" introduced the ambience to stunning effect, but I think the amalgamation of each style is fully realized on this album. The styles of song are interspersed just enough to balance the album out, and really "take you places". Plus, the songs in each style on this album can certainly rival the best of Eno's previous three albums: "Backwater" and "kurt's Rejoinder" match any highlight off "Warm Jets" or "Tiger Mountain", while "Here he Comes" and "Spider and I" easily match "Another Green World" in pure ethereal aesthetic. Moreover, everything on this album is quite catchy, and almost certainly mood-inducing. Just get it already!

4 out of 5 stars Man in transition........2005-06-14

Brian Eno's "Before and After Science", his last song-based album until the about-to-be-released (June, 2005) "Another Day on Earth" is in many ways the album you would hope it would be, reflective of his past, pointing in some ways to the future, very much texture-oriented music. On the other hand, while it has its moments, it fails to capture the immediacy of "Here Come the Warm Jets" or the beauty of "Discreet Music", but its still a great listen.

The album is really two sides, the first being more energetic, the second being a bit more ambient in feel. On the first side, there are three things that immediately draw you in-- the first is an overt use of vocal harmonies-- Eno's vocals are almost always in a harmony form with two or three voices singing the line ("No One Receiving", melodic pop song "Here He Comes"). The second is bassist Percy Jones, whose playing on a few of the tracks, in particular "Kurt's Rejoinder", is nothing short of astonishing. The third is the use of space-- look no further than standout "Energy Fools the Magician", where the four piece (Eno, Jones, drummer Phil Collins back when he was a drummer and guitarist Fred Frith) manipulate space as a fifth instrument to amazing effect.

The second side is much more in line with the ambient work of Eno's most recent albums-- a overwhelming feel of haunted ambient with vocals dominates. The entire side is full of fantastic material, from the haunted "Julie With..." to the lyrically brilliant and dark "Spider and I".

Overall, its a rewarding album that finds an artist caught in between forms, but even in transition, his brilliance shines through. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Another Eno World.......2005-03-24

The last in Eno's series of quirky, unique albums from the 70's before he moved totally into ambient music and expored his "rock" side only through production of other artists.

Like the titles that came before, Before and After Science finds Eno stringing together a series of offbeat numbers ranging from rock to pop to ambient and everything in between. This record was sequenced with most of the more ambient numbers at the end, unlike Another Green World's free admixture of styles. I personally liked the AGW way better, but fortunately we have the option these days of programming the songs in any order we want, so problem solved.

Eno's star-studded array of collaborators had become as legendary as his skewed sense of pop by this point, with everyone from Phil Manzanera to Phil Collins to Robert Fripp sitting in on this one. They were Eno veterans, but Eno's concurrent interest in German art-rock brings Can's Jaki Liebzeit and Moebius and Roedelius from Cluster to the table on Before and After Science.

My favourite moments: The atmospheric but too-short "Energy Fools the Magician" with the Brand X rhythm section of Percy Jones and Collins, with Fred Frith. The frantic new wave single "King's Lead Hat" (an anagram of Talking Heads) with Fripp. And all of the old "side 2" especially the beautiful "By This River" with Cluster. The piano has haunted me since I first heard it way-back-when, and I enjoy playing it myself. The closing "Spider and I" summons up a massive wall of synths-n-bass, and Eno's resigned vocal is quite fitting as he was about to leave the rock world (as a performer) for a very, very long time.

I have the earlier CD edition and to tell you the truth I don't notice anything radically different about the remaster, so the cheaper original CD might be a good bargain unless you're a real audiophile.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous 21st Century Remake of Classic Disco Song.......2007-05-24

Dannii Minogue's remake of the Sister Sledge classic keeps to the formula of the original for the radio mix. The multitude of mixes on this single present lots of alternate vibes. The mood of the song totally changes with each mix from the neo-classic disco beat to peak hour passion and down to lounge chill. Luv it!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not worthy of a single release.......2007-05-06

This should have been part of a double A side release for "I can't sleep at night". It would've given Dannii a chance to finally release "Sleep" and throw her loyal fans a new single.
The mixes of this single are pretty good, but like another reviewer said, the first 2 tracks are what this disc is all about. Stays true to the original.

4 out of 5 stars Killer remake of a touchtone song.......2007-04-30

Sister Sledge's "He's the Greatest Dancer" is one of those songs that symbolizes disco at it's very best. It was written by Chic's N. Rogers and B. Edwards when these guys were at the top of their game.

When I heard that it was being remade by Dannii Minogue, I was somewhat skeptical as so many disco songs have been butchered when they have been remade as they don't manage to capture the greatness of the original nor manage to add anything new to make it work.

This maxi-single has a generous 8 mixes, which starts with the LMC mix, a very faithful to the original song: A juicy, pulsating celebration of a female who is attracted to a man due to his dancing and a quite a lot more ;-) From the 3rd to the 8th selection, the release shoots to make the song more contemporary for the most part it works quite well. There is some inclusion of house on the Chris Lake Remix that is quite fun.The Shapeshifters Remix starts off quite well with a nice tease. Riffs & Rays Mix has house elements then switches into electronica and is probably the version that varies most from the original as the voice is secondary to the beat. It's my current favorite after the LMC Edit. The Fugitive Club Mix is just OK.

All in all I am very impressed that Dannii has done such a great job with this song. Her vocals are not the greatest on earth compared to the original, but it it does not take away from the enjoyment of having this song updated for a a new generation of dancefloor maniacs, if only a living room dancefloor. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

4 out of 5 stars Found an Easter Egg.......2007-04-18

On first listening to "Long March Rocket or Doomed Airliner", the 5 second track, I heard nothing and was like, "what's this all about?" So I turned up the volume on my speakers to full blast and replayed the track. The first 2 seconds sound like one of the 'moaning angels' from the previous track, then quickly fades into the sound of an airplane... weird. But pretty cool stuff.

As for the CD itself, I find parts of it enjoyable to listen to and the instruments well arranged, but didn't find it nearly as compelling as other reviewers. Maybe I'm not in the right mood, but I got bored a few times after listening to the same musical notes five minutes at a stretch. Perhaps it'll grow on me over time and catch me off guard one day. :P

5 out of 5 stars The world's a mess, and so are we........2006-09-22

This is 'ASMZ''s debut album -- a despairing, fatalistic perspective of the world and all that's contained within it.

Rarely -- so rarely -- is music this day in age put out with the ambition of creating an all-encompassing 'experience'; music for the sake of communication, rather than some sort of self-gratifying manner of egocentric show. Here, rather, 'ASMZ''s selves are transporting the message, but our selves are participating equally. It's not an 'act'. And so, the information transferred within the first twenty minutes is as such -- in the bowels of this strange, detached world we somehow came to exist in (He didn't plan on telling us how or why!), a distinct concept appears and continues to be a vague theme of the album: the contrast of the scared, confused, alone Human (conscious of it or not) unable to have a choice in the matter of being swallowed hole by this infinite, ever-changing beast called reality. The album is so assaulting in portraying this predatory force (evolving technology, mental illness, social alienation, starving countries... simply mass suffering on a global scale -- very flexible with interpretation), it ends up establishing a heavy, repeatedly deterministic way of looking at things. Though we are at heart Loving creatures, placed here by the very hands of God, the end is ultimately coming about before our very eyes -- whether we're consciously aware of it or not -- and we have little else to do but endure it 'till the end. At least, that's what I get from an album like this. Whether they're getting at the nature of suffering at large, or perhaps specific Human cause/effects and their relations to the 'chaos' of the post-modern world, I think it matters a great deal not, for ultimately the concluding emotional response turns out to be the same. Though, I do beckon, without the subtext focusing on the various ways we have been mutilated for the worse as a collective, thus really giving way to a more personal and immediate feeling towards those existing with us currently, it would not have quite the same impact. And, you know, I believe this sort of black and white approach, and its tendency to convey such an impenetrable, undefeatable force conquering helpless, alone, confused individuals within Humanity, without regard to any real sentient concerns, is probably the most romantic way in portraying the album's ultimate redemptive quality. For, at the very heart of nature, we have such a theme anyway; we come, we go, with no say of our own. But, personally, I prefer to interpret the entire work as an ode to all of us facing the hardships of a changing, bewildering life where things once known are now disappearing into oblivion. Ethics, morals, technology, identity, nature of family. Things that weigh on the mind to a hugely diminishing effect, displaying their prowess quicker and quicker with time... And how the hell are we supposed to manage all of it? It's depressingly heavy material, with things both novel and deep in implication, but instead of being allowed to think about it, we're told to drink Coors, go to McD's, watch football and F*@# each other like rabbits.

Now, for anyone who proposes the idea that 'ASMZ' is a band of nothing but false pretense -- I proudly present '13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round the Side of Your Bed', the boldest, most moving piece the band has ever written, bringing to light the fact that all three of the albums following this one have been phenomenal -- it's got only the starkest competition. So, I'm entirely, 100% honest when I say this, guys:

....never, ever in my life, have I heard a piece of written music that so divinely captures the entity of Love with such heartbreaking magnificence. While I do believe the foreshadowing cloud of darkness the album maintains 'till the track's entrance provides for an even more affecting crescendo effect than what '13 Angels' provides on its own, it is completely possible, and more than likely 'probable', that one who finds the rest of the disc unappealing may still find themselves breaking down emotionally as it dives into the soul. It is the greatest musical embodiment of pure compassion I've ever had the most grateful pleasure of listening to. Why it works the way it does, I won't even attempt to try and rationalize, because it is not a piece of analytical concern, but of the heart's yearning. When I listen to it, I for the time being view every Human being I share this strange reality with in the most empathetic light achievable, guided by none but the heart. If I don't cry while I listen to it, I feel like I want to. Keep in mind, too -- I'm no crier. In fact, I'm often a crass, obnoxious piece of flesh to the adorning public -- but there's that part of me, that child buried within, who's heart is broken in however many ways, and '13 Angels' brings him out for momentary catharsis. The track is a meditation piece of the most sincere form imaginable, and in my case, it produces an overall effect that, no matter how many times I let it nurture me for but seven minutes, becomes a 'part' of my entire being -- a representation of me and my heart; the emotionally fragile, struggling being that I am, and that you are, too. It is, love.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite ASMZ.......2006-03-07

This is ASMZ's first album, and in my opinion their best. It is the most like GY!BE, epecially with the strings and background voices and samples; most like "lift your skinny fists..." to be more specific. What I like alot about this album is what made it hard to get into when i first heard it, and that is the reoccurence of similar melodies. The whole album is like one long song that revisits certain parts. Even though most of their albums seem to be concept type albums, this ones music really reflects it. The vocals are alittle rough in the beginning, but they grow on the listener. But all in all i like the emphasis on the strings the most, which is also one of my favorite aspects of Godspeed. Never a dull moment with Efrim.

5 out of 5 stars Ecstatic.......2006-02-02

This album is phenomenal. Musically trimmed down compared to Godspeed You Black Emperor. Some of the most beautiful music I've heard, haunting and bereft of hubris. I don't mind the vocals but the only part I don't care for is near the beginning with some of the sound effects or recording noises at the beginning of the album.
All in all, I'd consider it one of the best albums I currently have and recommend it to those who can sit down and allow themselves to truly listen to the piece. A piece which should be enjoyed in its entirety.

5 out of 5 stars !!!.......2006-01-29

Eight tracks of pure genius.

While it's a little spooky at times, and mystic in some ways, I love sleeping to this album. It's reallllly good to listen to when I'm in a contemplative mood or just thinking. It's both chaotic and melodic, which normally wouldn't sound nice but this sounds amazing.

This isn't my favorite ASMZ album (Born Into Trouble As The Spark is), but it's definitely high in the ranks.

If you're thinking about not getting this album, I'd definitely think again. It's... uplifting, almost, as long as you're not depressed. Don't listen to this if you're depressed.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2005-08-29

This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

4 out of 5 stars Music like this could make me a convert.......2005-08-17

I've always been a rock and roll fan since back in the 60's. Listening to this cd could easily convert me into a classical music fan as well. Wow what a voice.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2003-01-22

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

4 out of 5 stars Tenor terrific.......2003-01-18

I am not a fan of this kind of music, but I bought this after hearing a few sound snippets at amazon and WoW! what a find. Excellent song selection, powerful singing, fine music quality for a live recording. Expand your horizons and enjoy. (get this wayno)

5 out of 5 stars oh molly oh.......2002-12-15

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-06-21

Well, I suppose I could join the debate over I Am Hollywood and this cd, but let me just say that they are both great cds in their own right. I Am Hollywood was amazing! It had great vocals, awesome music, and amazing lyrics. Suck Out the Poison stays with this trend but in a different way. The southern rock elements have transformed this band into something completely new. The vocals are different in many ways, but still retain the He Is Legend feeling. I saw these guys live in Nashville promoting Suck Out the Poison and believe me, they are just a heavy as ever. They even played I Am Hollywood for all you who are obsessed. Overall, this cd is put together very well. The music, the vocals, the lyrics, everything flows and fits. I would recommend it to anyone. Christ bless you all!

2 out of 5 stars Highly Disappointed.......2007-05-13

First and second album rocked by socks off man. I really had high hopes for this cd. I agree with one of the previous comments where they mentioned they thought the band recruited a new singer. I don't know, maybe his voice was hoarse during the recording of this album. The only reason I gave this album a second star is because it's He Is Legend, come on. At least I still have I Am Hollywood!

4 out of 5 stars good cd..........2007-05-10

Not quite as great as I Am Hollywood but still a good release from He Is Legend...

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN.......2007-04-18

First off for all of you who have been talking about how I Am Hollywood was harder, that album is more than just the first and last songs okay?? i know you probably played those over and over and over and got the feeling that the seduction and I Am Hollywood was all that the album was, well it wasn't if you go back and look you'll see that it is chocked full of poppy slowed down stuff, THIS ALBUM IS HARDER THAN I AM HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His vocals are bigger and gruffer more often he sings less, there are more breakdowns, the jam is bigger, He Is Legend Resembles Zeppelin on this freaking album. BTW the references to the other album are lyrical threads you see them in most freaking incredible bands and they go all the way back to H.I.L.'s first EP

2 out of 5 stars Not as good...........2007-04-09

I purchased this CD expecting something great-- I had heard good things about this group, and had seen them live a couple times. I really liked them, until I got this CD. Definitely not as good as i thought it would be. The vocals were crappy, and there wasnt as much depth to the voice. The music wasnt as heavy or as tight as it was before.
