Breathtaking.......2005-11-11
There is a reason why this woman was named songwriter of the year! 80'S Ladies.. even if im not her age, i can totally relate to that song.. Ive grown up listening to K.T. she is my favorite all time country singer. Best way to listen to her, is relax in your favorite chair or bed, close your eyes and let k.t sing to you. You will feel like you are in the studio with her. You feel every emotion she puts into this album. 80s Ladies will always be my favorite album.I've lost count of the number of copies ive gone through these years. You feel her pain as she sings Wall of Tears.. you want her to come back in "I'll always come back" You and K.T rock with "YOUNGER MEN" and "Truly Blue". Memories of your friends flash thru as K.T sings 80s ladies..
KT likes younger men.......2005-01-17
K T bucked all trends in popular music by emerging from obscurity in her mid-forties to become (briefly) a major star of country music. This was the album that catapulted her to stardom, deservedly so. Her musical background embraced a variety of musical styles so her music is contemporary country, eighties style.
K T wrote or co-wrote all the songs except the opening track, Wall of tears, which is a great song (co-written by the writer of Don't it make my brown eyes blue) but the album gets even better.
The first of K T's own songs, I'll always come back, is a wonderful ballad but the following track, Younger men, is perhaps the best song of the lot, being about the attraction to a middle-aged woman of younger men. While not uncommon in real life, this is an unusual topic for a song. Many American radio stations, run by middle-aged men who felt threatened by the song, refused to play this track.
However the title track, another song with strong appeal to women, got plenty of airplay and became a huge country hit. A couple of very romantic love songs (Do ya, Lonely but only for you) should please the men.
Old pictures (recorded by the Judds before K T became famous), Dr Dr and Two hearts are the other excellent songs that make up the album.
The big hits from this album have since been re-issued on a greatest hits collection (Songs from an ageing sex bomb) but this album is worth hearing in its entirety. If you enjoy eighties country music, buy this - if you can find it.
love the lady.......2004-10-24
If you can't get romantic to this album you can't get romantic!
Many a tiff was forgotten just by putting this album on,lowering the lights, pouring a glass of wine and s-l-o-w dancing. K.T. you know just when to emphasise a word or note, and your voice can only make one think of a kinder gentler time. THANKS for the memories K.T. and please....COME BACK!
Amazing CD!.......2001-10-15
K.T. Oslin is an awesome vocalist! I am 18, and I literally grew up on this CD. My mother used to play the tape for me, and to this day, it is my all-time favorite country CD. I highly reccommend it for anybody young or... not-so-young. It is an essential for any music lover.
terrific........1999-05-26
I just love that song come back K.t. Oslin is a beautiful lady

When talking about old-time music, Tommy Jarrell is the real McCoy. Whereas many "old-time" musicians, especially those who had or sought recording careers, updated, polished, and modernized the traditional styles of the mid-Atlantic mountain regions, Jarrell steadfastly refused to alter the fiddle techniques taught to him by his father Ben and other local legends of the Virginia-Carolina border. Thus Jarrell's fiddling has a raw and abrasive sound, although his technique is anything but--it is refined and complex, often mixing in plucked accents with his advanced bowing technique. Like the style of playing, the repertoire mostly dates back to the mid-19th century. Although the 15 songs here are fiddle solos, Jarrell accompanies himself with delightfully offhanded singing and introduces many of the songs with facts about their histories and the tunings he uses. This fascinating record serves as an enjoyable listen as well as a history lesson and an instrumental instruction course. --Marc Greilsamer

Old Time Fiddle Master.......2006-08-01
Tommy Jarrell has been a source of inspiration for old time fiddlers for generations. These CD collections demonstrate why his heartfelt dedication to his music is so infectuous. These tunes are classics.
It don't git no better'n this!!!.......2001-12-28
OldTime music at its best! A mini-biography of Tommy Jarrell and how he aquired the tunes on this CD. A short story is told before each tune explaining the key of his fiddle and from where he learned the tune. The booklet tells about the tune as well. Highly recommended for the OldTime music player and/or historian!
Ole time fiddle playing doesn't get any better than this!.......1999-12-17
Listening to Tommy Jarrell will take you back to the way real mountain musicians sounded while playing on their front porch. I've had the CD for 4 days and have almost wore it out. If you love ole time mountain music, BUY IT!

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended
harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Melba Montgomery CD.......2007-02-08
The Melba Montgomery CD arrived on schedule. The price was excellent for a new CD that is almost impossible to find anywhere else. Great service!
Cheap price, cheap recordings.......2006-07-05
From the graphics on this cd, you might get the impression that these are the original recordings of the songs. However, these are post-1970's re-recordings.
Two of Country's Greatest Female Vocalists.......2005-01-20
Norma Jean and Melba Montgomery were two of the most highly regarded female vocalists to emerge in country music during the 1960's, both of them "pure country" singers. Neither quite had the superstar record success their talents deserved although they were on the charts well over a decade; Melba had a number one record with NO CHARGE and Norma earned two Grammy nominations. They were also quite popular with fans, especially Norma Jean who from 1964-67 was probably one of country's top five women stars thanks to both her weekly appearances on TV's PORTER WAGONER show and a string of fine RCA records.
These recordings were made during the 1980's and include remakes of their old hits, covers of country hits of the 1980's, and new songs. I like Melba Montgomery a lot but I absolutely love Norma Jean. Her honey vocals make every song her own and she can sing hits of Hank Williams or Anne Murray with equal ease. The diamond of the collection is a stunning Harlan Howard song called GOD MAY FORGIVE YOU BUT I WON'T that might have put Norma Jean back on the top had this been recorded for a major label.
12 of the tracks are by Norma Jean (songs 1-6, 12-17), the remaining 10 are by Melba Montgomery. Both ladies now past 60 are still singing their hearts out and remain in fine form; Melba has had success in recent years as a songwriter for the likes of George Strait and others and Norma Jean has been one of the leading draws on the Branson, Missouri country music scene for some time now. I'd love to hear both of them record new music but in the meantime this excellent package will more than satisfy fans of these great country singers.

Album Description
As a youngster in Vancouver, British Columbia, Redd Volkaert learned how to play guitar from his dad. By the time he was 16 he was playing in local bars and clubs in Vancouver. After an 8-year stint in Alberta he left the Great North woods for Los Angeles, playing clubs, teaching guitar, and working on demo sessions. Moving to Nashville in 1990, he began doing studio session work and road dates with artists like Ray Price, Lacy J. Dalton, Clinton Gregory, and Dale Watson, eventually winding up in Merle Haggard's band, The Strangers. In fact, out of a long line of prestigious players, Volkaert is the most critically acclaimed of Merle's guitarists. In 1998 HighTone Records released Redd's first solo adventure, Telewacker. Soon to follow was the critically acclaimed No Stranger To A Tele. Guitar Player Magazine stated: "With No Stranger To A Tele, Volkaert showcases his jaw-dropping musicality as he wantonly jumps between hardcore honky tonk, western swing, and rock." In 2000 Redd moved to Austin, Texas, and has quickly become a participant in its thriving live-music scene.

Extraordinary guitar pickin'.......2004-09-26
Volkaert's day-job as one of Merle Haggard's Strangers has shown him to be a virtuoso of the Telecaster. For his "third" album, Hightone has assembled tracks from his first two albums, augmented them with a few pieces recorded with The Twangbangers (Bill Kirchen, Joe Goldmark and Jack O'Dell), and added two live videos. The result, naturally, follows the template of his earlier releases, focusing on Volkaert's extremely fluid and fluent Telecaster picking. He crosses through various shades of blues, country, swing and pop, with playing that brings to mind everyone from former Stranger Roy Nichols and blues legend Johnny Winter, to rock instrumentalists like Hank Marvin, Nokie Edwards and Link Wray.
Highlights include the lyrical, twanging swing of "No Stranger to a Tele," the honky-tonk "You're Still on My Mind," the Buck & Don inspired "The Buck Stops Here," and a multi-guitar attack on the classic "Truck Drivin' Man." The latter, along with "She Loves Anything That Swings" and a live take of Voelkert's signature "Telewacker," includes Bill Kirchen, Joe Goldmark and Jack O'Dell as The Twangbangers (whose own album is also available on Hightone). The low-end reverb of "Chee-Z" brings to mind the classic '60s instrumentals of The Shadows and Ventures, and the picking on "Breakneck" shows off Volkaert's incredible technical abilities alongside those of steel player Jim Murphy.
This is a nice overview for those who've yet to learn of Vokaert's charms, but other than the bonus videos (live versions of "Truck Drivin' Man" and "Tube'n"), there's nothing new for those who have his first two CDs and the Twangbangers release.

All American Country.......2005-08-11
I bought this particular Waylon Jennings for the song made famous in the movie The Executioner's Song (Good Ol' Boys), and also because it's the first track on the cd. It turns out the actual title of the cd is All American Country, not Ladies Love Outlaws. And it's indeed a really nice compilation of "country". I like it a lot.
LADIES LOVE OUTLAWS.......2002-04-05
THIS CD IS ONE OF THE BEST BY WAYLON. THE SONGS ARE GREAT, AND THE LAST ONE (HE WENT TO PARIS) IS THE BEST. IT IS A JIMMY BUFFET SONG WITH A STEEL GUITAR. THIS IS OUTLAW COUNTRY.
Disappointed!.......2001-08-11
As a previous reviewer noted, this is NOT the original "Ladies Love Outlaws" album and does NOT include the true gem of that release: Waylon and Jesse as a duet on Buck Owens' delightful "Under Your Spell Again." Somebody made money on this poor excuse for a Waylon CD, and it probably wasn't Waylon. At least I only wasted seven bucks.
Good songs, but not as advertised.......2000-04-27
This is NOT Waylon's classic 1972 album "Ladies Love Outlaws". Although this isn't even billed as a 'greatest hits' collection the songs in this disc are from various albums from 1972 to 1982. There doesn't appear to be a good reason for this album to exist, except maybe to make the record label (BMG) a few bucks. Still, there are some great songs here, such as "Waltz Across Texas"; some of these can't be found elsewhere. Hopefully, Buddha records (which has recently rereleased some of Waylon's best albums) will get around to putting the original "Ladies Love Outlaws" out on CD as well as others like "Lonesome, Onry, and Mean".
