Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19

This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.

4 out of 5 stars Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20

I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-03

I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30

I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2005-04-29

The John Rutter Collection in my opinion is one of the finest and most perfect works I've ever heard. The Cambridge Singers demonstrates the best vocal discipline and style of any vocal group in the world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Like many prominent singers of the 20th century, Patsy Cline was encouraged by label figures to stray from her roots and record pop standards intended to broaden her appeal. However, only the greatest singers--talents like Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, and Etta James--can put a distinctive stamp on war horses and invest them with enough fresh emotional power to actually emerge from the experiment with an enhanced reputation. Cline certainly belongs in this group, as evidenced by this collection of 14 standards. Like James, for instance, Cline wasn't necessarily supportive of crossover dreams, but as long as she was in a studio she might as well deliver the goods, whether the musical backdrop was a steel guitar or a string section. Few singers--country or otherwise--have matched her ability to combine vulnerability and assertiveness, pain and power. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars A perfect accompaniment.......2001-08-30

This album is a perfect accompaniment to those who only have a greatest hits collection. Her rendition of Always is a definitive recording and should be listened to....period. Again this collection does NOT have her well-known hits like Crazy and Sweet Dreams, but is well worth owning. All this said, i must state that I am NOT a country music fan. Patsy's voice deserves a listen and you will NOT be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Collection!!.......2000-09-03

The casual fan of Patsy Cline may think their collection is complete with the GREATEST HITS CD. But they are missing so much by not buying this CD. The first two songs TRUE LOVE and YOU BELONG TO ME have been sung by the greats but never been given such exquisite treatment as by the lips of Patsy Cline. The same can be said of Heartaches and BILL BAILEY. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN LONELY reveals the lush expressiveness of her voice, and on I LOVE SO MUCH IT HURTS ME you can here the pain from her very soul. Don't miss this!

5 out of 5 stars My Mom was Patsy Cline..........2000-07-12

or so it seemed! Imagine the early 60s.Kennedy is on the black and white(sound off),Patsy`s torch songs on the hi-fi, my Mom in her capri pants ironing and singing along. If that bit of nostalgia doesn`t prompt your Patsy memories, allow me to tell of the pure magic of this cd. As if Patsy were in the room this cd has been re-mastered very artfully. Andy McKaie,Doug Schwartz and their team have taken the original Decca masters and created a fantastic cd. I hope they re-master the entire Cline catalog. Unless you had the pleasure of hearing Patsy Cline in person you havn`t heard her like this!

4 out of 5 stars MEMORIES.......2000-06-24

THIS CD TOOK ME BACK TO WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND DREAMED OF BEING IN LOVE. THIS CD IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION. NO ONE SINGS OF LOVE LIKE PATSY CLINE AND THE MUSIC IS PURE COUNTRY CLASSIC.

5 out of 5 stars Another nice collection from Dreams come true.......2006-06-03

I have been listening to Dreams come true for almost 10 years. The rich vocal of miwa Yoshida always soothes my mind. This album is consistent with her previous style. I like it very much.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album.......2004-03-26

[...] I began to wonder whether getting this double CD was worth it. I had only listened to a few Dreams Come True tracks and of course the music in Sonic 1&2.

I placed CD BLEU in my CD player. The smooth piano sound echoed around my bedroom. It was then I realised it was worth it.
CD BLEU has very quiet small songs, all of which are, understandably, sung in japanese. Overall the songs are very listenable and enjoyable, only track 3&8 sounding dated because of their 80's sound. This is understandable considering this is a "best of" style compilation and Dreams Come True started in the late 80's/early 90's.

After the CD finished I placed CD ROUGE into the player. Again the rich sounds drew me in, crystal vine is a fantastic track, and the second is also quite enjoyable, however track 3 "a little waltz" is a bit cringing, but still listenable none the less. Again Track 4 has a slightly 80's sound to it, and is a little dull. Track 5 has a much gentler pace, and Track 6 continuous this with a nice orchestrated ballad. Track 6 is the first song on the album thats in english! The rest of the CD is filled with more ballads including Sweet Sweet Sweet, which as many will know is the song that Dreams Come True based the Sonic 2 Ending theme off of. Track 9 is also a bit intresting as the chord pattern sounds remenisant of Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1.

Overall this Album is fantastic just for chilling out and also for uplifting your mood. I'm certainly satisfied with it, and the japanese vocals didn't get in the way of me enjoying this album.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

5 out of 5 stars Focus on Ophelia and Desdemona.......2007-05-09

Shakespeare in Music covers music inspired by three Shakespearean tragedies, Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear, and focuses on Ophelia's mad scene and Desdemona's Willow Song. Only a few minutes are devoted to King Lear, with Claude Debussy's introductory Fanfare and his tone picture Le Sommeil de Lear.

This album concentrates on the central scenes where Ophelia and Desdemona sing and shows how eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century composers responded to these extreme emotional states of the two heroines.

In Othello, Desdemona 's Willow Song develops out of her despair, fear, and presentiment of death. The old song of scorned love expresses the anguish of Desdemona, hurt and threatened by her husband Othello's jealousy and unjust accusations. Treatments here of the Willow Song include works by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Carl Loewe, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Erich Korngold, and others.

In Hamlet, Ophelia's mad scene is punctuated by her alternation of confused speech and abrupt sing-song, expressing her depression and departure from reality. Included here are works by William Linley, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Peter Tchaikovsky, Ernest Chausson, and others. The Schumann selection, however, does not involve Ophelia's mad scene, but instead the scene where Queen Gertrude tells Hamlet that Ophelia has drowned herself ("There is a willow grows aslant a brook...").

This album contains thirty musical selections, and a booklet containing the major texts in English, German, and French upon which the songs are based. They are not translated, per se, but the texts in different languages more or less correspond with each other, and the meanings can easily be determined. Overall, the album is a pleasant and instructive sampling of music inspired by these Shakespearean passages over the last three centuries. Mezzosoprano Rosemarie Buhler has a lovely voice, and she and the accompanists do a fine job. Students of Shakespeare, as well as anyone who enjoys the plays Hamlet and Othello, would appreciate this music.

      5 out of 5 stars Graceful music.......2005-09-27

The lute is a string instrument with a fretted neck and a deep, round back. In many ways, it is related to later similar instructments such as the guitar and banjo. It descends from a Middle Eastern instrument similar to the oud. The lute was one of the major musical instruments of the Middle Ages, and much music was composed for the lute, both as a stand-alone instrument as well as an accompaniment for singers.

This disc has some samples of both. Some songs are anonymous compositions, often derivative of much older folk tunes. Others are original compositions whose composers are known by name. Among these names are John Dowland, Thomas Morley, Alfonso Ferrabosco, Michael Cavendish, Thomas Campion, Nicholas Lanier, and Anthony Holborne, all of the 1500s/1600s. The music here involves both the 8-course lute and the 10-course lute (during the later Baroque time, lutes could have as many as 28 strings!).

The lute was eventually displaced by keyboard and other instruments, so in many ways its life is that of the music of the past. However, with recordings such as these, the lute lives again in vibrant form. Ronn McFarlane learned to play on a cheap steel-string guitar, but continued to study in a rather eclectic fashion, eventually studying at the Shenandoah Conservatory and the Peabody Conservatory prior to settling upon the lute as his primary instrument. In this recording, he is paired with Julianne Baird, a soprano with significant recording experience.

McFarlane and Baird emphasise the simplicity and lightness of the songs here; while some lute music and some folk tunes can be very elaborately arranged, here the performers strive for a more direct elegance. The particular period emphasised is Elizabethean; McFarlane and Baird sound as if they have come directly from the Queen's court directly.

      This is a beautiful recording.

      2 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted.......2002-02-13

i should have read the description more clearly...this is partially vocal, not all instrumental. Nothimg wrong with the CD, but I only like instrumental.

      5 out of 5 stars Greensleeves (Baird/McFarlane).......2000-09-30

Incredible! Stunning musicianship from beginning to end. For fans of Dowland, this recording is a gem. The blend of lute and voice on 'In darkness let me dwell' is downright haunting. This recording is an absolute pleasure. 5 stars just might be an understatement here...
