The swing revival of the late 1990s has been a boon for many acts that have been jumpin' and jivin' for years, San Francisco's Indigo Swing among them. But where many of those acts are hybrids of traditional swing mixed with punk, ska, or rockabilly, Indigo Swing stick much closer to a traditional, jazz-boogie version of the form. With a couple of hoppin' exceptions ("Blue Suit Boogie," "Drinkin' It Up"), this record is filled mostly with a hardy selection of down-tempo, horn- and piano-based ballads that are finely suited to Johnny Boyd's smooth, soulful croon. Even when they cut loose, Indigo Swing invoke a sophisticated, bluesy style far removed from much of the kitschy, rock-&-roll-based swing of their contemporaries. --Donovan Finn
Customer Reviews:
Great for people new to swing.......2006-04-13
As the title of this review suggests, this is a fantastic first buy for somebody who is new to swing music. Of course, if you're a veteran of the genre, and you don't have this cd, you should probably go ahead and get it. The songs are well written and exceptionally catchy. Overall the songs are fairly mellow, by which I mean they lack the overly-brash horns which are so common in the neo-swing genre. I highly recommend this cd to anybody who is interested in jazz, swing, or simply wants something really fun to dance to.
Top swing CD.......2005-07-19
For listening or dancing, you'd be hard pressed to find a better swing CD. Boyd's smooth vocals are incredible and there are some great original numbers here. I could listen to this CD all day and dance to it all night without getting tired of it!
Primaro Magnifico Neo-Swing.............2005-03-06
What a delicious collection of music this treat is! Dynamic & danceable throughout. This is Neo-Swing @ its finest. Looking for that special something that is `all meat & potatoes'? Tired of the ` kibbles & bits' so prevalent in the releases of recorded music? (Usually one purchases a CD, & gets 2 or 3 nice pieces, & the rest is filler). This collection is easy to dance to, vibrant & happy, or steamy & sensual. Exciting music, so alive w/ lots of fun breaks, runs, & accents- emphasizing horns & a stride/jazz woogie/boogie woogie piano. Harmonies delicately blending in and out to unquestionably quantify their musicality understanding. Then, there is Johnny Boyd.... Johnny Boyd IS the vocals that are very smooth, about as smooth as you can get them. He repeatedly exercises that special & velvety sound- melting in that extra smoothness, almost as if they were built for swing music. Watch out for those saxophone accents, you can almost see them building!!! I have memorized all the breaks & accents & a better collection of music is far & few between. In regards to dancing- This IS Lindy Hop & East Coast Swing, with a tempo (I'd say is 100-160ish BPM). In closing, there are very few pieces of music I would classify as a `gotta have', but this is a true gotta have. Okay, don't/can't dance? Fine. It's all GOOD!! The lyrics of this album SWING of Beauty, Hope, Life & its flavor and passion that sums up what both life and love are about...good times, regrets, fun, and more fun! "Regular Joe" & "How Lucky...," just the titles alone, sums up what this whole disc is about and the good things that happen to regular people (Oh, what a dance number!!!!). `How Lucky Can One Guy Be', often brings me sunny days when the clouds of life overcast my views of things. Graciously Yours, Steven R. Mashin- Oregon City, Oregon.
Indigo Swing are the bomb!.......2004-06-11
What can I say? I am a die hard Indigo Swing fan!!!
Blue Suit Boogie.......2004-06-03
Jump blues and boogie woogie. Very nice! The first album of Indigo Swing. Only one song ("Regular Joe")with big band sound. It was arranged by Bill Elliott of Bill Elliott Sing Orchestra. William Beatty and Johnny Boyd wrote most of the songs except "Violent Love" (very nice cover of Willie Dixon's song) and instrumental "Hot in Harlem".

We all love this album!.......2007-06-03
My dh originally found this on cassette tape in Strasburg, PA. Being train fanatics, he couldn't resist getting it for our children (ages 7,5 and 3). They love this album so much, it is the first thing they ask for in the car. Even our 3 year old daughter will sing some of the words. Our tape has finally worn out, and I'm so happy to find it on CD.
I have always appreciated John Denver's music. So I'm really happy to hear an album that the kids and I can listen to and enjoy. The music itself is great with a variety of styles. I think my favorite is his version of City of New Orleans. He gave me a new appreciation for that song. My kids can't seem to pick a favorite--they love them all.
Rail theme CD........2005-08-12
John Denver's heart felt paen to trains. A nice mix of tempos rounds out John Denver's unique take on both the evergreens and off the beaten path selections. A must buy for the musical oriented railfan and their children.
GREAT MEMORIES!.......2005-01-28
I thoroughly enjoyed this great presentation of railroad songs by John Denver. It really hit home with me as I grew up in the era of the great trains and several of the songs spoke directly to that period of time, as well as, the sadness of their passing. He chose a wonderful selection of songs of different varities that appeal to people of all ages. In my humble opinion, this cd is a treasure to own.
Great for Train lovers.......2003-08-27
My son loves trains and anything associated with them. My husband and I like John Denver. This was a great CD that all of us could enjoy and listen to at home and in the car.
Good Grammy Choice.......2003-04-22
This CD deserves accolaides. I love trains and my only reservation is that he didn't write any of the songs. As a teenager, I commuted to school from Connecticut to New York by train. Later I collected all the Hallmark train Christmas ornaments. The kids of today don't know trains the way few of us can appreciate riding horses for transportation. Who says this has to be for kids.

Customer Reviews:
Another fine post-Sun collection of Sun sides.......2003-10-13
Sun Records made a cottage industry of releasing Johnny Cash albums for several years after the artist had moved over to Columbia Records. Ironically, this 1962 collection of previously issued tracks (some from singles, some from the vault) is more focussed on actual train songs than Cash's purpose-built 1960 Columbia release, "Ride This Train." In addition to the title track, "Blue Train" also finds Cash singing his own "Train of Love," "Hey, Porter!" and "Folsom Prison Blues," and covering "The Wreck of Old '97," Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line," and Hank Williams' "(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle."
Sam Phillips produced most of these tracks, and the few helmed by Jack Clement are mercifully short on his chorus and background overdubs. These are sparse tic-tac (or, in this case, click-clack) Tennessee Three arrangements, giving Cash's baritone plenty of space to shine. Varese's reissue adds a generous six bonus tracks, including originally unissued alternate takes of "Hey, Porter!" and "Train of Love," and an incomplete, originally unissued take of Jimmie Rodgers' "Brakeman's Blues." Two solo takes from Cash, a rockin'-gospel "Leave That Junk Alone" and 1954 rockabilly "You're My Baby (Little Woolly Booger)" are also both worthy additions.
Considering that these songs were recorded individually, over a five year period, there's a remarkable consistency and continuity. That's due in part to Cash and his band, but it also speaks to Sun's intention for this to be more than a slap-dash collection of previously issued tracks. This may not have been recorded as an album, but it sure plays like a good one!
"musical journey on the Rock Island Line ~ Blue Train".......2003-09-26
Varese has released early Sun recordings by the legendary icon known as "The Man in Black" aka Johnny Cash ~ his 1962 "All Aboard the Blue Train", featuring 12 originals from that album, plus 6 bonus tracks of alternate takes and previously unreleased material. His style and voice is instantly recognizable whether it is gospel, blues, rock or country. When Cash sang it touched most of us and conveyed the plight of the common man.
It's been some 40 years or more of listening to Johnny and the selections on this album is some of his best works from the early days. The sound quality of "ROCK ISLAND LINE", "HEY PORTER!", "THE WRECK OF OLD '97" and "FOLSOM PRISON BLUES" is quite amazing as his lyrics touches the heartstrings. But my favorite and highlight is "GOODBYE LITTLE DARLIN'", a Gene Autry compostion that I thought only Gene could sing, just listen to Cash pour his heart out and singing like I've never heard him before.
Stand up and take a bow Varese Records as we sample track to track a collectible reissue of a most enjoyable listen. John's guitar work is crisp and shows his incredible talent. You feel as if big John's right there with you ~ he will be sorely missed, but with the help of labels like Varese we can enjoy his God given talent. He is riding that train and we'll all be with him some day!
Total Time: 40:00 on 18 Tracks ~ Varese 64872 ~ (9/09/2003)
Original Sun Recordings.......2003-09-20
The late great Johnny Cash will never be forgotten. This disc is is a reissue of an album on Sun from 1963. Johnny recorded many train songs over the years and many of his earliest are here. Verese Sarabande is a great reissue label which has released other Sun albums by Cash on CD as well. The Man in Blacks music will live on forever.

ALL ABOARD! IT'S RIGHT ON TRACK!.......2001-06-19
I have been captivated by the sound of The Village Singers from the very first time I heard them. I believe I could listen to them all day.
This CD just adds to my appreciation of their music and style. Their rendition of the title song "All Aboard" contains such close harmony and beauty that in my excitement I could hardly wait to see what the next one sounded like and I was moved by every one of them. The blending and strength of their voices is superb; and the singing talent extends and shines through beyond the musical instruments.
It is great to have the samples of the songs available on your site so that we can listen to a short preview. However, in this case, I believe anyone who listens to the samples and orders this music will be astounded by the quality of the sound in this production.
I'll definitely be watching for future recordings.

New Orleans Jazz at its best.......2007-02-07
A stunning example of New Orleans Jazz in the style of George Lewis and Bunk Johnson. Superbly recorded. I've got more than 30 George Lewis CD's and they are now gathering dust at the bottom of the drawer. Buy both Volumes as they were recorded at the same session, possibly at Preservation Hall.
The front line consists of Kid Thomas, Jim Robinson, Sammy Rimmington and Captain John Handy. Sammy Penn is in fine form on the drums. There are no vocals.

A mixed bag of songs and sentiments that hits the mark.......1998-12-05
Thea has been playing in the Western Wisconsin, Eastern Minnesota area for many years. Her years of songwriting prowess and endless gigs in small venues finally bears fruit with this album. The album is a mixed bag of Thea standards and some new material. She takes us on a journey of lost loves, bitter suite romance, and social commentary. All of the emotion and sentiment in this album is delivered with her own unique vocal and piano stylings blended and sometimes forced together with guitar, electric viol, percussion and various and asundry sounds. If there is one drawback to this disc it is the recording quality which falls short of captruing Thea's full voice and gental harmony, while at times being down right noisy with tape hiss and other minor flaws. If you are interested in some truly eclectic music that defies a label give this one a listen.
