5 out of 5 stars i'm sitting on top of the world.......2007-05-23

this box set is simply incredible.

not only are the main albums you would want by the duo included, but you're getting 6lps on 3cds!

it came in a lovely wooden box and i thought that makes it more sturdy than most box sets i own. as far as the music, well if you dont' know anything about the sound of les paul and mary ford, then i don't know what to tell you.

les paul is the creator of multi-track recording, reverb, uh and the electric guitar (hence his name is on killer guitars). that being said the music is a wonderful quirky country skidoodle with mary ford's sweet voice on top, not doing any vocal acrobatics, since les paul's guitar playing is so intricate, her vocals suit the arrangements perfectly.

if you have just a passing interest in les paul's early(and superior) work, this would be worth the money. amg(allmusic.com)has listed other albums that sound very much worth getting, but this would be the best place to start (and possibly stop) with his early material.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better than this!.......2005-04-18

I described this album to a friend by saying it was kinda like Burl Ives singing Rock and Roll! Maybe that was a bit overstated because it's more folk/country than rock. Darrell is not only a talented songwriter but a gifted musician/storyteller as well. This is one outstanding CD...mellow, melodic...

5 out of 5 stars getting 5 stars from England.......2004-11-14

Putting this album into any genre is a dangerous thing...he may be in Nashville these days but it's not just country....its all the wonderful things from all over that make this album. What I love about this is the fact that it's quality songwriting backed up by some great playing and delivery...and it's a great album to listen to from track 1 through to the end. I've had the cd for 4/5 days now and it's a joyful listen. Don't take my word for it...buy it yourself...you wont regret it!

4 out of 5 stars Well-crafted songwriting.......2004-01-30

Songwriter Darrell Scott has had a fair run recently as a Nashville composer, providing hits for the Dixie Chicks, Sara Evans and Brad Paisley, to name a few. This is his first album on his own independent label, and while there's some striking material, there's also a slight air of self-indulgence as well (the average song length is about five minutes...) I liked the first couple of tracks a lot -- "East Of Gary" and "Uncle Lloyd" both explore the unglamourous side of the American working class ethos, and both are notable for their lack of Merle Haggard-ish "working man" posturing (a now-tedious trend in modern country). Scott handles the material with subtlety and skill, and both songs hit me the right way. Not sure why I wasn't really as taken with rest of the album... I guess it went down an overly crafted Greg Brown-ish folkie path or something -- the songs were too lofty, the picking got too glitzy, I'm not sure exactly what it was. Scott's voice is really nice, but his songs are best when he reins them in a bit. Still, this is definitely an album worth checking out -- Darrell Scott has a lot to offer fans of intelligently written Americana, so take my criticism with a grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars Can't live without!!!.......2004-01-11

I am a huge Darrell fan. I have all of his cd's and bought some, that he played on, just to here him play. This cd has a song for everyone. These songs have been shelved for 10 years and now they are getting there chance. I listen to it over and over. He is the best songwriter around. This cd is different than his others. He plays more electric guitar. These songs are so good. Here is one of my favorite lines out of the song "Six O'clock in the Morning" "Adam stood over Eden fair , While Eve slept he touched her soft hair, Waiting to catch the first train out of there at Six o'clock in the morning. The man can paint a picture and just put you where he wants you. He is Amazing . Please buy this cd. It will become one of your favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Songwriter....You have to listen..........2003-10-17

Darrell Scott caught my attention immediately at the New Song Festival in West Virginia last summer. Since then, I've bought all of his albums and have had 2 more opportunities to see him play live. He is definitely one of our generations best songwriters. One of my friends claims that his imagery is at times just as good or better than Bob Dylan. Decide for yourself. His new album is just as good, but in a different way than all of his others. I love the baritone guitar and electric feel just as much as his more acoustic albums and I'm an acoustic player myself. Darrell has an extremely impressive list of successes already, but I feel this album may be his most successful. Look at his bio for a humbling experience. Chances are, you've already heard his songs played by other people without even knowing it. I'm going to stop rambling and let you decide for yourself what I'm talking about. Enjoy.

If you think that musicals are only outsize, outlandish spectacles hatched on Broadway, The It Girl deftly shows that there are other options. This small show was created in 2001 at the York Theater--located in a church's basement, it's as close as you get to a barn in New York City. Loosely based on the 1927 Clara Bow vehicle It, the show gleefully runs through all the 1920s classic situations and characters: chases, flappers, mistaken identities, a boat cruise, a department-store heir, and fake French accents—it's all there. You can almost hear the ghost of P.G. Wodehouse, librettist for the Gershwins' Jazz Age classics, cheering. The It Girl breezes through thanks to its cast's game can-do energy and the strength of Paul McKibbins and B.T. McNicholl's perky tunes, which deploy nice melodic resources and make the most of a six-piece band. There's enough knowing pastiche here to keep the saccharine at bay, but the creative team also shows genuine resource and love for musicals as a genre. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough of "It".......2006-02-11

I took my daughter to see a production of this at a theatre in Hopewell where I sometime perform. We really enjoyed the show, and my daughter asked me to buy her a copy if the CD. I can't stop listening to this show. Great score...great orchestrations and great performances. I'm going to buy myself a copy too.

5 out of 5 stars This musical has IT!.......2005-04-14

Maybe I'm biased, because I'm friends with the composer... but I was not when I first saw this musical, and I fell in love with it. A truly toe-tapping score, and adorably witty lyrics. It's a charming gem of a show, and I recommend it to any music lover.

The characters are fun, the story is marvelously scandalous (in a family oriented way), and the performances are top-drawer!

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2003-05-18

Like another reviewer, was lucky enough to see this show at the York Theatre in Manhattan. A wonderful musical score and clever lyrics made this show an absolute delight. A must-have CD.

5 out of 5 stars This show is "How Do You Say...?" (Ah, yes) AMAZINGLY GREAT!.......2003-03-17

This show has a STELLAR cast! The cast is relatively small, only consisting of three men and four women. The music is original and REALLY clever (and based in the 1920s...GREAT TIME)! I listen to this cast album MORE than any other (and I have A LOT of cast albums)! Some of the MOST appealing tracks are "A Perfect Plan," "Coney Island" and "Step Into Their Shoes"! This would be A GREAT show for small theatres or small companies of actors! You'll be glad you bought this cast album after you take the time to listen to it all the way through at least once. You'll find a few songs you like and listen to those OVER and OVER. Two weeks later you'll find a few more songs you like and do the same! ... This is an A+ show!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful show with great music and lyrics.......2002-10-05

My family loved this show. Our eight year old son kept singing the songs and humming the tunes. He even wanted to listen to it at bedtime. Very catchy lyrics with tunes that keep your feet tapping. The show is full of songs that continually creep into your mind during the day. I often found myself humming a tune or two over and over. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

    3 out of 5 stars English Choirs.......2002-12-18

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars hayden, in a forest of sound.......2006-11-15

I will admit, before I write this reveiw that I am a Hayden fan. Something about his music stirs my soul. It could be the simple, yet complex songs. It could be the beautiful, but sad songs he often writes. Hayden is an artist full of contridictions, his voice is scratchy and raw, and really not even that good, yet it fits his music perfectly.

As usual this album is warm. It reminds me of a flanel shirt you put on on a cold, crisp day as you warm up next to the hearth. The recording is good, and this is a live album, so it is not studio tight, but I think that is the point. It is a raw sound, that is often apparent in his studio releases, but here it shines through in all its striped-down glory. It is intimate and you can almost feel his breath in the microphone.

If you are a Hayden fan, I recomend this album. It has a collection of songs from all his previous albums and some tracks that are not easy to get in the states. It is a two disc album, and it would add alot to any music fans library. I hope this helped, and you find great pleasure in this artist's latest release.

4 out of 5 stars A truly memorable live album!.......2003-10-22

Hayden's 2-cd live album is, for the most part, simply breathtaking. As well as showcasing some of his best songs (Middle of July, Between Us to Hold, Stem, etc) it captures some cute and funny moments of singer-audience banter. I was at this concert and loved it, and now I have this album to keep forever. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars live, breathe music.......2002-12-28

this is a great, great album. I'm so happy he put out a live album. I seen him live last year in Detroit and met him, cool guy. I was a fan before that concert so I was excited to see him. If you don't feel like getting his older stuff, which i HIGHLY recommend, get this. bob dylan, leanord cohen, hayden. another musician that has talent,no, a gift. just him, his guitar, piano and harmonica.

5 out of 5 stars intimate and stirring performance.......2002-11-26

When I first listened to this album I realized just how many great songs Hayden has written. It plays out like a greatest hits CD of his 7 years+ musical career. He is such a strong performer and the recording is intimate. And his in-between song bantor is hilarious. It's beautifully packaged in a foldout digipack and includes a booklet of lyrics with photos. Recommended for all fans of this remarkable songwriter/performer.

    4 out of 5 stars A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24

Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.

As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.

Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.

I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.

5 out of 5 stars Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23

Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.

The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.

The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)

5 out of 5 stars A Good, Poppy Punk Record.......2007-02-14

Normally I would give this four stars, but I am giving it five because this band deserves better than the limited exposure they get, and secondly because not all the reviewers below have given this CD justice. I bought Useless ID's last CD "No Vacation From the World" and found this newer release "Redemption" to be an improvement. It's a bit poppier, but on the other hand, the song "Pink Stars and Magazines" was one of the best punk songs to be released in 2005. Also noteworthy is the opening track (which starts out almost identical to the Goo Goo Dolls "Slide" then builds up to a pop-punk chorus. Another winner is the track "Suffer For the Fame," which shows the group branching out into new territory without selling out via a big dark gothic opera (Like Good Charlotte and Blink 182 have done.) Also catchy is "Turn Up the Stereo," very similar to the Ataris "Radio #2." There are a few duds, particularly towards the end of the album (ironically the same thing dragged down their previous album a bit as well) and the track "Before I Go" sounds like it was taken right out of the Weezer playbook, but all in all, quite a good time. The album gets a positive vibe going, unlike the dark gothic all-too-serious "new mature sound" that many of these bands have adopted lately. Kudos to Useless I.D. for making another winner and giving the fans the kind of music THEY want to hear. If you're lookin for some catchy pop-punk similar to Allister's "Last Stop Suburbia" or Sugarcult's "Start Static" then look no further.

    1 out of 5 stars Tisk tisk..........2007-02-07

I don't know what happened to Useless ID between the release of Bad Story Happy Ending and this abomination, but whatever it was it wasn't good.

The pride of Hafia Israel, Useless ID, used to be a good punk band with poppy components. With this cd, it's obvious that they've become a pop band with (presumably) punk hair cuts. If you liked Let it Burn or Bad Story Happy Ending, do not buy this cd.

    5 out of 5 stars i love this cd.......2006-04-23

i heard of this cd from a co worker who plays it all the time and now its one of my favorite cds, my favorite song is turn up the stereo.

    5 out of 5 stars Useless ID-Israeli Punk.......2005-12-11

I only found out about Useless ID in August 05. I listened to a sample of it and loved it. Then, i bought the cd, Redemption. I still cannot believe that they are Israeli! At least that's what i've heard. I think the drummer is crazy in a good way on this whole cd. The guitars are cool, too. The lyrics are great, too. So i will do a review(by the way, i wrote the review for Slipknot + 2 if you're who i am):

1.Its allright - very cool song. Its amazing. this was the song i heard a sample of when i heard it. Even then, it was like green day. Great.
2.Kiss me/Kill me - This is a great song. i like how in the chorus the chord progression changes completely. Yes.
3.Pink stars and magazines - this is the latest "issue" of great punk songs. I love the lyrics the most. It great.
4.Deny it - This is the only song that BORES me a little. the lyrics could be a bit better and so the druming as well. 1/2 and 1/2.
5.Suffer for the fame - my absolute favorite on the whole cd. first it starts out with jazzy type music and goes into a jimi hendrix vresion one of beethovens symphonys. then it just goes into the song. but i'd still say that its great. Excitment and all. i like how at the end its kind of like a Slipknot chorus and it goes, "I!!!! don't want it in my world........" An amazing one.
6.Turn up the stereo - good song. it even does feel like i want to turn up the stereo. its great song.
    7. Before i go - i think its an amazing song. 1. because my friends and me are making a movie and its about exploring and this song might be the opening credits. 2. the lyrics and vocal styling are one of the best on the cd.
    8. Dying Love- its a great song. just BORES me a little. Pretty good, tho.
9.Drinkage-good song. the lyrics are pretty good. the drumming is too.
10.Everything turned red - my second favorite on the cd. really good and cool. i like when the song ends where it goes "Everything turned red the first time i saw you" over and cver again and it seems like it never stops.
11.State of fear - my third favorite on the cd. it is a great song. all i have to say.
    12. Redemption - my fourth favorite. i love it, tho. its really cool, the lyrics, the percussion, and the guitars and the bass are really good in this one. great closing track.

All in all, i really love this cd and it is a must by for those who like Jimi Hendrix, green day, and Ozzy, and Slipknot. This is still an Israeli punk band. i stil can't believe they are isreali! they sing in english, tho.

    4 out of 5 stars another good pop-punk band.......2005-08-27

This band is pretty good. They are kinda like new found glory and a little bit of simple plan mixed in. Their beats and lyrics are completely awesome and whenever you listen to it you get pumped up. I'd reccomend this cd along with their other cd no vacation from the world.

      Album Description

The emotional and pivotal album that followed the tragic death of founding member and bassist Jason Mathew Thirsk. Dedicated to his memory, "Full Circle" is hard as nails, reflective, and ultimately redemptive. Despite the somber task at hand, the record is exhilarating and uplifting. It also features a moving re-recording of "Bro Hymn" and a special hidden piano instrumental of "Unknown Road".

      MUZE notes:

Pennywise plays the kind of four-on-the-floor, no-holds-barred Cal-punk that was pioneered by the likes of Black Flag and the Descendents and has come back into fashion in the wake of Green Day, Offspring, et al. As the four members of Pennywise demonstrate on FULL CIRCLE, however, these guys are no Johnny-Rotten-come-latelys. On their fifth album for punk standard-bearer Epitaph, the band displays the kind of raw energy and tireless inspiration that is the mark of every great punk band. FULL CIRCLE is the band's first album without bassist Jason Thirsk, who died in 1996, and Thirsk's loss can be felt in the troubled, searching themes that run throughout the album. The album is dedicated to him. On "Did You Really," vocalist Jim (Pennywise doesn't go for that whole surname thing) asks "Did you really wanna die?," immediately adding, "Tell me I'm forgiven." Pennywise may take the weight of the world on its shoulders, but if FULL CIRCLE is any indication, this band is strong enough to keep its balance.
