Admit it: If you had to pick an artist to give voice to the wackadoo thinkings of a monkey beloved by most of the American populace over age 3, you could do a lot worse than Jack Johnson. Black Eyed Peas? Too hyper. Death Cab for Cutie? Too ironic. They Might Be Giants? Too eggheaded. Johnson, though the object of much rightful jealousy--here, after all, is a guy who only stumbled into music and vaulted himself up the charts after a successful career as a pro surfer--turns out to have the goods to do H.A. Rey, Curious George's creator, proud. Fans familiar with Johnson's earlier discs will recognize a certain laconic sprawl and easy fascination in his songs that suits the theme of perpetual puzzlement perfectly (here, let's not forget, is a guy who racked up fans with songs called "Bubble Toes" and "Banana Pancakes"). That the music takes a childish turn barely registers--songs like opener "Upside Down" are classic Johnson, all wonderment and groove, and the collaborations with friends Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa warm up, wink, and scamper off before packing on the weight of excess meaning. "We're Going to Be Friends," track seven, seals the deal--when you can make the White Stripes sound compatible with the Man with the Yellow Hat, you know you've got a multi-generational winner. --Tammy La Gorce

Description

Faced with the task of giving a voice to a central character that does not speak, Universal Pictures turned to Jack Johnson to craft songs that could provide a voice for Curious George. As a new father, it gave him the opportunity to make an album for both parents and children. Presented with early animations and the story line, Jack crafted new songs that capture the emotions of Curious George as he leaves the jungle to follow the Man with the Yellow Hat. He also turned to friends Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa to contribute songs that might bridge the gap between parent and child. Joined on the record by his band (Adam Topol, Merlo Podlewski, and Zack Gill), Jack duets with three of the other songwriters (Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa), and does a cover of the White Stripes' "We're Going to Be Friends." Parents who watched Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday mornings when they were children will recognize Jack's take on the classic "Three Is a Magic Number," reinterpreted with the 3 R's as a call to protect the environment and Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies feels like so much more than your standard soundtrack due to its unified creative vision. While the songs have a universal appeal, their themes speak to a child's experience (or in this case, a curious monkey's experience) of the world.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2007-07-13

I love this CD! The songs are soothing and kid-friendly yet I enjoy them too. We bought it because it was "Curious George" (and my son is obsessed) but I am so glad that we did. Well worth the price! It's a very mellow, feel-good, happy, easy-on-the-ears, calming CD.

2 out of 5 stars Curious George CD.......2007-06-09

CD arrived in good shape but it is not at all what I thought it would be. This is not a sing-along CD. It seems to be misrepresenting itself with such a title. Not impressed or satisfied with this CD. It was reviewed to be something different. It's simply music by Jack Johnson which tends to be very slow.

5 out of 5 stars Great kid music.......2007-06-01

My daughter loves this soundtrack and sings along. Very kid friendly and teaches kids how to protect the environment. Jack Johnson is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Feel good music.......2007-05-27

After seeing Curious George and then watching the music video in the Special Features, we had to get this soundtrack. My children will often go to sleep to it and then I turn it on softly when it is time to wake up. My children love learning the lyrics and singing along.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!!.......2007-05-07

The title says it all. It's fun for the kids and really enjoyable for hte adults as well.

Take a fine organist, a crack brass ensemble, bathe in wide-ranging, vivid sound, and you've got a recipe for an exciting disc. That's what Telarc has done in this recording of a live concert by the Empire Brass Quintet in effective arrangements of Baroque favorites and rarities. It may seem odd to hear a Handel Violin Sonata or a Telemann Trio Sonata played by a brass-organ combo, but it works thanks to clever arrangements and superb playing. A highlight here is the Largo of the Handel work, where marvelous horn and trombone solos enhance its beauties. And of course, such favorites as Jeremiah Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary and the Prince of Denmark's March join Campra's stately Rigaudon and other stirring processional pieces. The SACD version adds another level of air and bite, but the CD layer of this hybrid disc is demonstration quality too. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars The Genesis Soul ..........2007-01-05

This is the first, during "best" Genesis period. It's strange and poetic. Melodic songs, but they have Banks' signature.

5 out of 5 stars 5 for the music when it was in lp.......2006-11-08

ok, i do not own the cd, yet in my teens I wore off the LP.

I was the time that genesis was not enough for all the music all these guys had, this cd is being sold with mike Ritherford's Smallcreeps day, talk about a perfect combination.

Ok Im remebering my past years, but if you were into prog, this is a unique cd.

Afer all thse years, i still remeber that the painting that makes the cover is called Wulluwait, the boatman of the dead

PS its "Wuluwait, The Boatman of the Dead"

1 out of 5 stars It has 2 B.......2006-09-04

the worst recording , composing , etc ... by a member of Genesis ... I give it one star because there is no Zero ...
And I do Love his Magestic work with Genesis on Piano and Keyboards , having seen him live many times with and without Gabriel , all until then there where 3 ... Some players and composers are at their best as a group ... So B It ...

Like one of the reviewers below, I too am old enough to have listened to a lot of prog music over the years. I'm also a big Genesis fan (up to Wind & Wuthering)- Selling England By The Pound is still my number one favorite album of all time ever - and I'm old enough to have bought this album when it was first released in 1979/1980. All I can say is that if you like old Genesis, you will love this CD (notice I didn't say "album' this time). Do your self a favor, put this on the player, turn the lights down, recline, and remember why you love music and its power to communicate with your soul.

Now as for the vocals of Kim Beacon, I must say I've always truly enjoyed the singing on this album/CD. There's something unique about Kim's delivery that really works for this project. For God's sake, this man can really sing; he doesn't soar, but he does have soul - he reminds me a little of the vocalist from Bad Company - it's not like you're being asked to listen to a favorite Genesis or Yes guitarist sing or something (which out of love I will dutifully do). All kidding aside, these vocals have a depth and soul all their own, which I have always enjoyed. I don't want it to be something it's not. Appreciate it for what it is.

4 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars for vox + 5 stars for music = 4 (w/ round up).......2004-12-08

I know... I'll get zero "was this review helpful" votes, because this review will be too negative. When I rate 5 stars, everybody LOVES my review... I give 2 or 3 stars and NOBODY finds it helpful. So it goes... you'd think they'd be appreciative I was trying to save them money. :)

AWESOME music on this CD. Definite 5 stars for the music and keyboard work. I picked this up used in a pawn shop back in '92 for $4. Being an early Genesis fan, I liked Banks' keyboard work, but really didn't know beans about the CD. Worse yet, they were selling it in an "Invisible Touch" CD case, so I had nothing to read (track listing, liner notes, etc) about it either.

Was pleasantly surprised by the CD, being a blind purchase, and I thought (and still think) the textured keyboards and melodies were sweet. Of course, the ONLY thing I didn't like about it was the vocalist (and still don't... guess I need a new brain as well). He seems to be a "red state/blue state" issue... you either love him or hate him. The only thing I can say is A LOT of prog bands seem to pick technically proficient vocalists (Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, most Rick Wakeman solo projects, GTR--yeah I know, not really prog, but boy did that singer "Max Whathisface" stink) who have very little soul or "feeling" when they perform (unless you consider the performances in "Sleepless in Seattle" deeply moving... then you might find these vocals stirring as well...just kidding...they're not quite that bad...). There's just no emotional connection with the vocal delivery as if the guy is just reading someone else's lyrics (which he is). He just didn't "make the lyrics his own" so to say.

And I would have to agree with the reviewer who called this "Duke's Little Brother". Before I ever saw the release date, I guessed this had to be someplace between "Then There Were Three" and "Duke" (you know, those two post-Wind&Wuthering albums that were lambasted by a reviewer who thought this CD is a masterpiece..."ironic" I thought, "since they sound a lot alike to me"). Arrangements and melodies are way similar. Like those other two CDs, there's a nice blending of synth pads, leads, etc with the more dynamic piano textures. Like a lot of Genesis CDs, Banks also has a few "droning bass pedal" tunes on here (nice chords shaped around a steady bass note) similar to "Afterglow", "Snowbound", or "Squonk". As most the reviewers seem to indicate, this really is the most Genesis-like solo Banks (at least that I've heard).

So, to summarize, this is a very nice album musically, and if you liked "Sleepless in Seattle" or "City of Angels" (w/Cage) then you'll probably like the vocal performance on this as well.

This collection is a companion to Irwin Chusid's book of the same name. It celebrates outsider music, music "so wrong it's right," and if you're drawn to sounds that make you wonder just what the musician was thinking, this collection is for you. The compilation is enthusiastically, if not always respectfully, annotated by Chusid. His selections range from the output of blissfully un-self-aware but basically functional individuals to the certifiably insane. Among the former are Lucia Pamela, an Ethel Merman sound-alike who contributes an infectiously enthusiastic celebration of "Walking on the Moon," and Congress-Woman Malinda Jackson Parker, a late Liberian lawmaker whose "Cousin Mosquito #1" cautioned against contracting insect-borne disease. The latter include Daniel Johnson, whose "Walking the Cow" weds a sublime melody to puzzling lyrics and a toy keyboard arrangement, and Wesley Willis, who pays tribute to Chicago's "Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's." Some of the artists are quite famous (Tiny Tim), some anonymous (the unknown writer and performers of song-poem "Virgin Child of the Universe")--they're united by their blithe certitude that the world needed to hear their unlikely but singular creations. --Bill Meyer

    Album Description

"OUTSIDER MUSIC" refers to a genre of sonic exotica that in some ways is so wrong -- it's right! Outsiders could be the product of supernatural possession, damaged DNA, drug fry, psychosis -- or none of the above. These often self-taught artists may lack conventional tunefulness and self-awareness, but they display an abundance of earnestness and passion. And they're worth listening to, often surpassing all contenders for inventiveness and originality.

This CD is a counterpart to the book SONGS IN THE KEY OF Z: THE CURIOUS UNIVERSE OF OUTSIDER MUSIC (A Cappella Books/Chicago Review Press), and it was produced by the author, Irwin Chusid. The text explores such avatars of outré sonics as The Shaggs, Daniel Johnston, Harry Partch, Syd Barrett, the Song-Poem industry, Jandek, the Cherry Sisters, Captain Beefheart, Florence Foster Jenkins, Wesley Willis, Wild Man Fischer, and countless other musical eccentrics with cult followings.

This CD features songs by artists profiled in the book. From the uninhibited howling of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy to the arrested-adolescent passion of Daniel Johnston; the LSD-cabaret crooning of Arcesia to Joe Meek's rare, wobbly "Telstar" vocal demo; the Shaggs aboriginal backwoods rock to Lucia Pamela's vertigo-bent outer space lunacy -- SONGS IN THE KEY OF Z promises an unforgettable romp through music too strange for radio but too fascinating to ignore.

For more information on the artists featured on this CD, buy the book (available on Amazon.com). Then behold the magic, the visionary nature of outsider sonics. You may never want to come back inside again.

4 out of 5 stars Except for the grace of God..........2006-07-06

Here is music from blessed retards and mentally ill people from around the "World" (most from the U.S.) There is also music from individuals that fall somewhere between retardation and mental illness, as well as a few that fall between the cracks in the cracks. _ I love this album. _ It's slightly more tasteful than a freak show, and a lot more tasteful than Maury Povich. Some songs blow in my opinion, but that's true of almost any album.... Final statement: Unless you are outstandingly boring and dull-witted, you will really like some of these tracks. Take the trip; it's worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars an amazin album.......2005-03-12

thank god that somebody sat down and put these gems together. They shine like rare diamonds in a musical climate that is becoming all the more narrow and predictable. Buy this album. You will not be dissapointed

5 out of 5 stars Songs in the Key of Z: It's the Real Thing, Baby.......2004-03-18

About a million years ago, when our far-from-human ancestors were still huddling together in a damp hole in the ground, picking lice from each other's armpits, music was born. Those peabrained hominids found they enjoyed barking and howling at the moon together, harmonizing as it were, and gradually incorporated a whole range of yelps, shrieks, farts and belches---which they could and did perform for the sheer exhilaration of the act. Yeah, this was the essential music, the primal music, with a weight and currency all its own, long before the spoken word polluted our ears. So, here we are a million years later, and we've forgotten the primal origin of music, it's been bred out of us---now we PAY a relative handful of polished schmucks to serenade us, because we fear that our own music, our own barking & yelping frenzy, is somehow unworthy. And this is what we now call the REAL world. Thank Christ for schizophrenia... Indeed, only a complete retreat from "reality" can deliver us to the roots of REAL music---and this is where I finally get around to endorsing "Songs in the Key of Z"... This is the real thing, baby, unencumbered by social dictates, false morality, political agendas... My most excellent advice: Don't try to rationalize the contents of this album WHATSOEVER. Don't just TRY to sing along, but really get INTO it, and howl your ass off if it feels good. Rock over London, Rock on Chicago, Northwest Airlines: Some People Just Know How To Fly.

5 out of 5 stars You can never please anybody in this world.......2004-01-16

This is a great introduction to the world of "Outsider" music (term coined by Irwin Chusid). This CD is the audio counterpart to the book of the same title. Outsider musicians play their own unique music, and they all sound different from each other, so there are many different styles here. Personally, I like all of the performances here, but I may be in the minority there. If you like music that is "different", you should definitely give this CD a listen.

    5 out of 5 stars worlds but A World.......2004-01-01

Sometimes we are so accustomed to MUSIC big companies made for us. I think it's not too bad for us to listen to something different. If you wanna know what music but MUSIC is. Go out and buy it! You will know there are many worlds in our only one WORLD.

5 out of 5 stars A Purcell Sampler, or a Greatest Hits disk, if you prefer........2006-02-05

This is a compilation disk of Greatest Hits, as it were, of Henry Purcell recorded by various artists from 1953 (the Alfred Deller track) through the 1970s through 1994. The point of the disk was part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the much to early death of this great composer and one of the great geniuses of music that England or Britain has ever produced. I have always been a devotee of his music and absolutely adore the way he set English. It is absolutely unique to him and so full of wonderful effects that create a greater whole than the music or words alone.

1995 was a year when we got to revel in everything Purcell. I was able to see a very delightful staging of "The Indian Queene" in London at the Barbican. It had narration, dancing, the singing, and wonderful playing. At the other portion of the concert, I enjoyed a performance of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" and other works by Hogwood et al. I was hoping to hear Kirkby, and she was billed. However, she was ill. Catherine Bott did a fine job as did John Bowman (both on this disk). Another counter-tenor I was so impressed with was Robin Blaze. I haven't heard much of him since, but he was terrific that night.

There are selections from his works for stage such as "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen", Did and Aneas, and more. The disk also provides a selection of instrumental works, some sacred selections, and all the works are a delight. The track of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" is from 1953 and recorded by Alfred Deller. If you love the movement of historically informed performance, you do owe some debt to Deller. He was an early reviver of the counter-tenor voice and trying to create a style of performance that might be more appropriate and true to the music of earlier times. He helped bring about new interest in madricals, and other early music forms.

That Emma Kirkby sings on the disk is, of course, a delight for me. I have been captivated by her singing since I first heard her live in December 1980. We also get to delight in the singing of soprano Catherine Bott and counter-tenor John Bowman. All are led by the great Christopher Hogwood (except for the Deller track, obviously).

5 out of 5 stars Familiar Music As Played By A True Artist.......2000-08-30

This album contains all those supposedly trite and "easy" recital warhorse pieces played to perfection. You would think that the result would be pedantic and boring, but Laredo's playing demonstrates the vitality a first-rate artist can bring to even the most familiar pieces. If you are a piano student, or if you know one, get this CD just for the inspiration it provides.

5 out of 5 stars Ozric Tentacles Does It Again!.......2007-06-11

This band may not be well known, but they are a real treat. Lovers of psychedelic music and creative Rock should own at least some Ozric Tentacles. I own what I believe to be their best music. I have Erpland, Jurassic Shift, Strangeitude, Pungent Effulgent, Curious Corn, and the Floating Seeds Remixed album. Curious Corn is one of my favorites. But the others are great too. They utilize so many things to make their music. It is really interesting, and never offensive. Pick up some or all of the titles I just mentioned if you like their vibe. It's all good!

5 out of 5 stars I dunno how they does it, they jus' does it........2007-04-21

Curious Corn was released under the Ozric Tentacles moniker way back in 1997. The lineup consisted of Ed Wynne on guitar and synth, Seaweed on synth, John Egan on flute, Zia on bass, and Rad on drums. This album contains everything the Ozrics are known for, such as glissando guitar galore (Oolite Groove), a meandering synth-driven track (Spyroid, NOT Meander), a percussion-laden, world music-flavored xylophone-driven tune that segues into a timbale sample (Afroclonk), and a groove-driven jam (Oddentity) along with three other tracks. Given the variety of musical styles on this CD, it's hard to get bored with it even after repeated listens. Good stuff, if you can get your hands on it.

5 out of 5 stars The Ozrics are a national treasure, and long may they remain so!.......2006-01-22

Well, I picked up on the Ozrics 20 years too late......
They gigged locally in June '05 so I went to see them and, well, I still haven't really come back. Bought 'The Eternal Wheel'(Best of...) and as a result have now acquired over half their back-catalogue. Snapper do several albums as 'two-fer-the-price-of-one' God bless 'em, and Curious Corn is no exception, being combined with Swirly Termination, whose Steep and Space Out are beyond stunning.
Curious Corn is very much in their current synth-led psychedelic/trance rock style of things, with Afroclonk perhaps being a nod toward their earlier albums, though here the emphasis is on African polyrhythms rather than the Middle Eastern/Indian feel that permeates the earlier albums. Ed's blistering guitar solos are still there though for we six-string freaks! For the more analogue among you, Jumping John still blows through his 'sticks with holes in them' as good as ever. The title track is outstanding, the bpm being possibly hazardous to those with a heart condition! (perhaps the CD should come with a health warning?!!!) Oddentity, which follows is a stunner, also featuring on Live At The Pong-Master's Ball CD & DVD as the opening number. Oh, s-d it, just go out and buy it and keep the best band on the planet (and several other planets) touring and making stunning music for us for another 20 years!
        Ozrics Rule, OK!
